WonderSwan Covers - Vita Cases
I put it in this forum subsection since its hardly ever used.
I figured we can just used this case type for all the 'other case' types.

I have been trying to figure out a better way to house my WonderSwan games.  The original boxes were in a tall vertical format and I really wanted to get them looking similar to the retail boxes.  Since i have a few extra vita cases i thought i'd see if they fit and I was very pleased to find out the WonderSwan games fit very well. The cases need no modification and can hold the instruction manual.

I was very surprised to see how small the retail boxes actually are. The Vita case is actually larger in the x and y (obviously slimmer though).  I really hope that the vita sells well enough to have a greatest hits program and red cases. That would be awesome!  Currently the blue vita cases fit very well with the SwanCrystal Games.

I am working on converting a template to fit all the various versions of the WonderSwan and am 65% complete with the template.  Its unlikely I'll finish the template in the next few days but I will try and hack it out very soon.  It will be a fully functional templet just like my other ones with just about everything being editable.

Final Fantasy II WonderSwanColor

This one is a custom cover based on the retail arrangement. I used a red case in the preview image in hopes sony releases a greatest hits a few years down the road.

Star Hearts WonderSwanColor

Retail-esque from scans.  Blue case preview showing what it would look like for now.

The lack of retail scan make the project a bit hard to get the ball rolling quickly.  There was a great deal of scans from one of our newer members and I would thank him/her by name but i can't think of them at the moment.

If anyone has any scans that would be of great help!

As always let me know what you think!  ;D

Its sad to say that when I lived in Japan in 2004 I actually had a handfully of wonderswan boxes but when I returned to the states I had left them behind. It's all because I couldn't take anymore stuff back. I still have about 8+ wonderswan games and a white final fantasy ws color but all I saved were the manuals and games w/ their cases. When I get a scanner someday I will try to add these manuals to the side along with my genesis covers. I know it's no help to you know but I just thought I would share because ws stuff dosen't come around these parts too often.

I have a shitload of WS games as those are pretty cheap to collect here in the EU.

As for feedback for the template. I dunno if I like the back actually. It looks kinda strange with those stripe on the left and right. Wouldn't it be possible to find another solution like for the front?

Whenever you do (even if its months or years from now) please do scan them in, i'll still be here :D

1. I have a shitload of WS games as those are pretty cheap to collect here in the EU.
2. As for feedback for the template. I dunno if I like the back actually. It looks kinda strange with those stripe on the left and right. Wouldn't it be possible to find another solution like for the front?
1. Even though I know you like making your own cover with your collection, if you wouldn't mind scanning them in that would be amazing!
2. I chose the vita case type since it was closest in physical size to the Swan boxes.  I originally had the other flap included on the back of the cover but it looked VERY weird when the front artwork extended from the front to the left spine flap.  There was a portion where the artwork abruptly stopped for the spine and started again on the back.  The red and white are on the back is so minimal I think it looked far better than the alternate way.

i don't yet have a wonderswann  (just looking on ebay now) - but woouldn't PSP cases be closer to the original shape of the boxes?
Its a pretty cool system, I wish it would have come stateside or to the EU.  I would love to have some games in english  :P
As i said to Tik earlier I chose the vita case type since it was closest in physical size to the Swan boxes.  Whichever case i would have chosen it would not be the correct dimensions to line up with the original boxes. I always found the PSP cases to be too tall for my liking and its pretty evident w/ the Wonderswan boxes.

The green area shows where the box scans do not cover.

i uploaded a bunch here ; http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=10531.0

in the hope that someone would turn them into DS sized covers!

could we have a shot of the carts and covers in situ? if there really is no modding required i may be persuaded to move to vita cases...(do they sell them seperatly??)

Ah Hah! Yeah it was you that i was referring to in my first post. Thank you very much for the scans you have provided!
I was thinking about putting some little sticky foam peices to the left and the right of the cart so it hold tightly (like wiggy does with his handheld console covers)

EDIT:
As far as i know, no place sells the cases by themselves currently. Over time the cases will become much more easily accessible.  Some GameStops throw the vita cases away after they are traded in and just put the loose cart with their loose DS carts. That is how I got mine

Ah.  Seeing it in place makes more sense now why these would be preferable to ds or psp cases.

Didn't buy one today, but I'm watching a few auctions. Lol. ;D

Now to find some vita cases..........

Edit:  for once uk has something before the US,  have to get my sister to order me some......

I will see if I can get to scanning them. As quite some of them are pristine I'm kind of hesitant to fold them for a perfect scan though.

I still dunno about the back. The front looks so perfect like it has always been like that and the back especially on a none all white back game like Star Hearts looks kind of strange. Not flowing enough if you know what I mean. :)

Maybe an all white back would be better? Could be a bit bland looking then.... Hmmm.... Maybe with a bit of rearrangment of the barcode and legal stuff (difficult without writing possbibilities in JP).....

Makaimura for WonderSwan WonderSwan

There is no need for the side flaps to fit the original WonderSwan box scans. They already fit perfectly  :)

All white or all black would be too bland for me. I figured just incorporating the color of the template would be best.

To be honest i really have no interest in rearranging the barcode and legal stuff.  The entire reason why i want to use this type of case over the DS cases that are currently being used is i don't want to rearrange a bunch of stuff to make it fit the case type.

Couldn't they also look like the normal Wonderswan games?

The Makaimura cover looks perfect! :)

It's pretty awesome that the original boxes and the Vita cases are so similarly sized. Man, that makes life easy!

I like the 2nd version, the one with Ghouls and Ghosts. Buuuuut, the red puts me off.  Too much intense color like that in a template feels akward to me. It commands too much of my attention when there's a dozen or so on a shelf.

I think if you just inverted the red and white areas on the spine, made the WS logo white instead of red, and kept a nice 1/3 red, 2/3 white split, it would be about perfect ;)

Do you mean the way that i formatted the box scans to the cover type? The WonderSwanColor and the original WonderSwan boxes are very different in size. The Wonderswan boxes are wider than the WonderSwanColor boxes. The spines were required on the Color version but not required on the original.
There aren't two versions of what i've shown, just two different box sizes for two different consoles.  There is just either Wonderswan or Wonderswan color.  The box scans just fit so much nicer for the original Wonderswan there is no re-sizing needed. This is not possible for the Wonderswan Color boxes because they are much thinner.

I had tried that before but its ended up looking really weird. A white Wonderswan logo looks REALLY odd, i thought it would look OK but it was really funky!  I know you really like white spines for your covers but the primary color for the Wonderswan was red so i'd really like to keep it in that same vein.

Ah, somehow I missed that. I only have boxes for some of my B&W games, none for any of the color titles.

It's not that I don't like the red, just that there's a LOT of it.

The reason that I favor neutrals (and the reason that almost ALL game packaging does as well) is because it goes with everything. Some images are just gonna look strange with a huge backdrop of a really saturated color (the Sega CD and 32X come to mind).

Obviously it comes down to personal preference, but from a technical standpoint, being forced to use a template with a large, predetermined swatch of color can cause color clashing.
