Mr. Ben, I know I said I found the minimalist approach to be strangely appealing, but I feel you're starting to approach overdoing it... It's gonna lose it's effect ya know.

You should put more time into each of your covers I think, I've noticed a lot of errors and sloppy approaches (such as leaving the "information about publisher" filler text on the back of a few cases and simply using a scanned version of the ps1 back with filler artwork to fill out the back of a case).

You definitely have somewhat of a design sense, but you should really take your time more. The minimalist look is nice for some games (such as Dragon Valor) but doesn't seem to fit well for others (Such as Abe's Oddysee). I'm just saying don't rely on that approach too much, do what fits best for each game, and definitely try to spend more time making the backs of your cases look good.

Hope I don't sound like a jerk or anything, I just had to say it.

Mr.Ben, I think your cover style would fit perfectly with custom Wii covers, or WiiWare/Virtual Console covers if people are interested in them. Not to say that it doesn't suit other games too, some of these Playstation covers look really good.

  • ...and that's the bottom line
I really like the minimalist approach. I don't think it loses its effect either. It's just a little hit and miss. When you have an all-white frontcover it brings much attention to the front artwork, which can make it very hard to choose the right image. But it's also a matter of personal taste I guess and other users might disagree with me.

Personally I really like your Abe's Oddysee, Dragon Valor, Worms, Bushido Blade and Jade Cocoon covers. They just click with me. I don't know exactly what it is but I think they're great. Although I think there are far better dragon images to use than the one on Dragon Valor but that is just lamenting on a high level :) All in all these covers are very good work!

On the other hand I think the frontcovers for Tales of Destiny 2, Vandal Hearts, Worms Armageddon and the Alundra games are very bland and very generic. Apart from Worms Armageddon there's so much artwork to be found on the net for these games for some really awesome covers. Right now they look very unspectacular and exchangable.

I'm not slamming your work Mr. Ben. You've put time and effort into this and I do appreciate it. I just wanted to give you some feedback which you can ignore or take into consideration on your future covers.

That's probably just a better way of saying what I was trying to say about the fronts. You sorta articulated my thoughts better.

I still stand by what I say about the backs though.

Oh it's not spam, trust me. I never meant to discourage you or anything like that, just trying to be a bit helpful.

Wow - I need to get Star Ocean now. That looks epic.

Also, I coincidentally just picked up Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown at a pawn shop for dirt cheap - so, thanks for the cover, Duke!

Since now I have changed over to the Dark Side and am going vertical, here are my new Star Ocean 2 covers. Enjoy!
You'll still be making horizontal covers though, right? :(

You betcha. It's FAR easier to make horizontal than vertical IMHO, but since Konami/Sony put out one in the vertical and none in the horizontal, I gotta go vertical for my personal collection. Pretty much what this means is that I'll be putting out a few vertical covers of games that I didn't make vertical covers for beforehand and some vertical ones for games that I do have but only have horizontal available for download.

Oh, and the7k, Star Ocean is the BOMB. You might have to shell out a few tho, especially since the PSP remake came out. Glad you like it  ;D.

EDIT

Here are a few Parasite Eve covers, mainly by request. I know they look a whole lot like Vt102's (especially the horizontal ones), but it was the best way to get an official-looking cover. I mainly did this for the vertical and thought "what the hell" and made the two horizontal versions. I only used a scan of the back side of the jewel case, one of the front, and the strategy guide (highest res image available, and already in a long-box style).  So here they are!

'NOTHER EDIT

And here is a Gran Turismo cover, in the Vertical format (none other available, kind of odd IMHO). By Request.

And here's Bushido Blade 2, vertical AND horizontal, by request. Neither on the site beforehand. Wierd. I left the moire effect intentionally. Gives it a little flair.
