Anyone  ever get injured while preparing or modifying a case? I am curious to see if anyone else is as clumsy as I am.

I was cutting a DS case to fit a Gameboy Color game (Using Doom's method), and the Exacto-Knife I was using slipped and cut open my thumb today. I just got 4 stitches in it. Anyone else have anything like that happen?

Nothing that extreme, no, but I've nicked and sliced myself a few times with the blade while NES-ifying some UGCs.

This is a big part of why I'm such a huge Dremel fan and HUGE cutting ruler with GIANT finger guard.

I should not really admit this, its not really case cutting but a few years ago I was cutting dvd inlays out naked on my bed and paper cut the end of my penis. Yep right on the purple bit.

Was not that painful and did not bleed very much.

You may not believe me but It happened. :o

I slipped with a Stanley knife and a 1 inch slice appeared in my thumb while modding some ds cases, needless to say Ive never used that method again I use a dremel like power tool now. Didnt need any stitches though.

  • Think off-center.
Modding a ds case with a razor. Took a nice little top layer of skin off. Part of my thumb was missing about 1/4 of my fingerprint lol. (No blood). Thats as close as i got.

I think at least half of the folks in the industrial design department in college seriously cut themselves. I took at least 2 people to the ER. Too much Xacto use.

I sliced the shit out of my thumb in printmaking class. Pulled the skin back, saw bone, almost passed out. Super clean cut though, so I didn't bother to go to the ER or anything. Lots of pressure and then a good wrap around with some masking tape LOL!   The cut was so clean that there's literally no scar at all.

Wasn't much fun. Ever since, I've been super duper careful.

3-4 years ago on July 5th I was modifying some DS cases; was on my 2nd to last one when I hit what I figure must have been an air pocket, or some other type of irregularity in the case which caused the xacto knife to jerk up a little bit. Well combine that with the normal pressure/movement I was putting on it and I ended up cutting the pointer finger on my left hand.

Needed 4 stitches in urgent care (was the only one in there that morning no needing attention for minor burns) -- was one of the more nasty cuts I've seen (I saw parts of my finger I had no desire to see and hope I never see again).

Took several years before I modified another DS case, and even then I went out and bought a dremel tool specifically for it.

I only semi-stabbed myself one, during my learning curve of modding UGCS for NES games. Now I have it down to a science and and rock them out quickly. I have however been the victim of flying plastic as I cut them, few nicks but nothing major.

See, this is exactly why circumcision should be left to the medical professionals.

As for modifying things, I once tried splicing an old VCR's power cord back together, after I'd accidentally sliced it in half with a knife. I was trying to cut some duct tape apart between wires, and missed. Not knowing the specifics of proper repair, I simply twisted both ends together, plugged it in...and every light in the house went out. After resetting the breakers, I called up my cousin, who said I'd combined the positive and negative wires. Redoing the splice with his instructions, I got the VCR working again.

Here's what I do when it comes to cutting the plastic off; wear something thick (denim jeans are fine), put the case face down on your lap and cut underneath.  When they snap off they go into the pants and you probably won't even feel it, and that usually prevents the plastic pieces from flying across the room for you to find with your bare feet later (or worse, have them fly into your eye).

I use a Dremel and cut away from whatever hand is holding the case steady.  It's definitely worth the $100 I paid for the cordless model with all the accessories.

I wear my regular prescription glasses so I don't get flying plastic in the eyes or anything.

My biggest issue is the mess the flying plastic pieces make.  I mod them in my office which is carpeted so I've started using a paint drop sheet that covers the desk and surrounding floor area and that contains the mess and makes it easier to clean up.
