Resident Evil order?

Ok guys, I have played RE1, RE2 and am working on RE3 now.  But what do I play next?  I want to play the games in the order the story unfolds... so why did RE Survivor and RE Code Veronica come out before RE4?  Then the Outbreak games, the chronicles games before RE5?  I'm very confused on where to go next.. and next, and next after that.  Can you guys (RE FANS) please chart my way?  many thanks!

Welp, if you're trying to play them chronologically you've already screwed up by not playing Resident Evil Zero.

...so just keep going by release date.

Veronica is my fav, plus it comes next (in release order). I'd go for that one

I borrowed RE5 awhile back from a friend and played through it co-op.  I'm planning on picking up the series for my own collection.  Going to play 1-4 in a row...can't decide on whether or not to get Code Veronica X yet.  It seems to be a love/hate thing for people.  RE: Zero seems to be generally regarded as the low-end of the series from what I've read.

If you care about the story line, then I don't recommend skipping Code:VERONICA.  Fleshes out a little bit of stuff from 1 and 2, and sets up a little more for 5.
