Hey everyone. Glad to sign up for the forums.

I won't tell you my life story, but a Super Nintendo sitting in Goodwill for 20 bucks this summer reignited my interest in my old games. I've sold off, given away, or lost a bunch, but I still have a few. This time around I'd like everything to be in nice proper condition, and also look nice and a bit adult rather than merely being a pile of toys and junk.

So while looking for used games on eBay, I found people selling plastic covers with game art on them, and thought that was awesome if a little expensive. Then I kept looking and found this place!

I have a lot of questions, a few about specific cases I couldn't find, a few about collecting in general, but I thought I'd say hello before I started demanding rescans and grilling random folks about why covers posted in threads in 2007 weren't put into the Uploads section. It's a little confusing sorting through the years-old forum content and the assumedly new site setup, so I hope you can be a bit patient with me.

Welcome!

I honestly feel a tad confused about how some things work on this site too, so maybe I'll end up jointing you in some of the question asking :P

I do know that quality standards have changed quite a bit over the years, so that will at least explain some of the quality issues with a number of the older covers.

I don't want a cover for every game in existence! Just, inconveniently, a handful of covers that haven't been made, or aren't to standard yet...of course.

Actually, I do want a cover for every game in the sense that archival stuff is awesome and I love the sheer scope of this site. I hope the sets are truly completed someday.

At any rare, Arseen, my first question is what the proper way to request new covers or existing tweaks is. Is there a general thread, or do I start a new one? I'm primarily concerned with NES and SNES covers at this point.

My other question is that I found this entire thread full of NES true retail covers, ones without the added spine logo. While I'm not using this, people created a bunch in that thread and yet it seems most of them weren't uploaded to their respective pages. In addition, most of the NES games list the logo-added cover as "Retail" when it arguably should be a "Custom".

...I guess that's not really a question, just wanted to bring it to someone's attention.

Nice save with the greened text. ;D

1st question: I'd start new thread (Called something like ProfessorDog's requests) were you now and in the future post all your requests to the first post (which makes tracking you requests easier and which you keep editing when you want new covers or when your requests are full filled). or you can use Console spesific request thread if one is available.

2nd question: The NES covers which don't have the spine logo are new additions to our site. Before that all covers had the logo. Retail/Custom separation comes from there. Retail = with original (-ish) artwork. Custom = totally custom artwork. Definitions might be changed if more covers are made without the logo, but I doubt it will be bothered.

Our site quality stantards are strick so only little percentage gets permanently posted to our site.
But on that note: If you decide tpo use Vertical US SNES covers, this might help: http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=10382.0
I lists all known covers. Even those that for reason or another won't make the site. Quality on them is high, but not necessary site stantards.
Also repro and cross region covers won't be posted to our site, but do make my list.

I've been using Horizontal SNES covers, actually, though I've only printed about 3 so far. I prefer the more authentic look on them. The verticals are awesome, but don't have that same rush of total nostalgia when I see them. They're just different enough to register as "not the same".

However, after realizing the extremely convenient NES spine logo was added and never on the original boxes, I had an idea...

I've basically been putting Vertical Spines on Horizontal covers. The SNES retail spines are just inconsistent enough to be maddening...they almost match up, with the logo-on-black general scheme, but the position of the logos, the orientation of company logos, even the brightness of that Super Nintendo icon varies. I literally just copy the Vertical spine region (7"x1" area), paste it onto a horizontal, extend the 9-pixel white line for the top "Super Nintendo" logo up to the top of the spine, and fill the gradient around the company logo at the bottom to true black to match the rest of the cover.

It looks really good! You get the wonderfully professional and organized look of the vertical spine, with the original wide box art. I love it. I assume that it's too minor a difference to bother uploading though, so I was planning on just using it for my private collection.

Well you can create Mediafire or Box.net account, upload the redone covers there and give us a link to the folder or make crazy ass topic like the one I made.
If enough covers are provided I just might start maintaining the topic, but no promises. ;)

I think few people here wouldn't mind having the covers for the same reason you do.

This is exactly what I do. The mismatched spines on the horizontal covers kicked my OCD into overdrive, and I ended up taking this route a long time ago. Looks so much better up on the shelf.
