Anyone here know anything about homebrew Dreamcast games? I've been reading about it and it seems cool but I'm not sure how it works. Anybody who knows about this kind of thing, how does it work and what are the best games?

Oh please, we aren't going to be shut down for talking about homebrew for a console that's over a decade old. There's seriously no reason to ban discussion on this sort of thing, all that's needed at most is a simple rule against posting links to sites that provide roms/isos of commercially released games. I could understand discussing something like ps3 or wii homebrew being a bit more taboo, since they're current systems, but this is the friggin' dreamcast we're talking about.

I don't really know a lot about the dreamcast homebrew scene. There's emulators and stuff, but I don't really find those particularly interesting. There's also a handful of unlicensed games that have come out over the years, many of which are kinda pricey but really, really cool.

Beats of Rage (and its various mods) seems to be the most popular thing you can get for DC homebrew wise. There's also a few ports of Doom floating around, since Doom gets ported to everything under the sun. You'll just have to google around more.

Don't have a cow mon. ;D

I didn't ban, or take any other action.

I merely meant be cautious.

Talking on general level is not forbitten.

I know, I know. It's just that the discussion has been brought up before, so I figured I'd go ahead and have my piece.

The beats of rage stuff seemed interesting. Didn't really care about commercially released games (I'd rather own those), I was just curious about some of the original stuff. Some of those Beats of Rage beat-em-ups look really cool, particularly X-Men and Simpsons.

Well there's also all those homebrewed games based on the Doom engine. Technically, the Doom port is just an engine port, you have to own an actual copy of the game to legally use the Doom/Doom 2/Final Doom .WADs

There's also apparently a port of Sonic Robo Blast 2 being worked on, don't know how far along that is.

Personally, I'd like to see stuff like Cave Story or Eversion ported to Dreamcast. It's the easiest system to play homebrew on after all, and I'd love to have something close to a physical copy of those games.

Will all dreamcasts play homebrewed games that have been burned on a disc, or do I need to mod my system?

No modding required. They basically cracked the copy protection a long time ago, so now they can make self-booting isos that run without any problems. It's unfortunately one of the many factors that contributed to the console's demise.

    (2) [NTSC|U] (orange swirl logo) Mil CD see Dreamcast model (2) [NTSC|U] dates for more information
[NTSC|J] (orange swirl logo) Mil CD compatable

fortunately (or unfortunately? depending on how you look at it I guess) the later, non Mil-CD compatible models are pretty rare I find. I've never ran into one at least.

I've had dozens and dozens of Dreamcasts pass through my hands. Haven't had a single unit that wouldn't read CDR self-boots yet. I've got 5 here right now, including a US sports console, so I'll go ahead and double check in the next day or so.

One game I got from a friend that's similar to Lifeforce is called "Dux." It's by Hucast, and although frustrating to play, the graphics are simply phenomenal.

And look at that, an amazing way to get mah 100th post, not that it means anything special, just sayin.... ::)
