I too only collect games that I intend to play. However, since about the year 2000 or so, it's been much easier to find older games that I never knew about.
I kept virtually every game from my childhood, and was once content with that modest collection, but since I've began collecting many of the games that I never acquired when I was younger, my collection has easily quadrupled. I wouldn't say that it's been cheap, but if I consider how much I've spent on each game against how much it cost when it was originally released, it's really not so bad.

The one genre I really enjoy is the platformer, and there is no shortage of great ones on both the NES and SNES. So, I have a large backlog of excellent titles just sitting on my shelf until I can get around to playing them. The sad news is, I'm dying to own games like Little Samson and The Flintstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak because I really want to play them, yet their rarity makes that extremely unlikely. Unfortunately, I won't be satisfied until I own all the great games that I want to play.

Honestly I collect games I grew up with in my childhood. I play most all of them when I have the time. My N64 collection is still growing since it's the console I grew up with the most as a kid. That doesn't mean I don't like consoles I didn't grow up with like the Atari or NES but I found a few good games on them that I enjoy. Modern games don't appeal to me at all so what's the point in buying them, I mean granted I do want a launch PS3 to extend the life of my few PS2 games, same with getting a 360 for my small Xbox collection, and the Wii for my Gamecube collection, although the cube is built tough as it is. Sure there are a few game for the modern systems I like but not enough to start a huge collection over. Will I ever get rid of my collection, absolutely not, I will pass it on to my kids so they can hopefully had the fun I had when playing them.

I wish you the very best :)

Besides it doesn't have any of the great 3rd party exclusives. No Herzog Zwei, No Rocket Knight Adventures, No Shadowrun (SNES Shadowrun is a completely different game) , No Castlevania Bloodlines, etc. Plus there's the Genesis controller, specifically the official 6-button pad. I friggin' love that controller.
Don't about the Castle of Illusion games. They're often touted as "the best Disney licensed games outside of Kingdom Hearts".

I only collect games I intend to play. SNES is my main collecting console I have about 120 carts for it but I dont collect crap only games that were well reviewed.
It's funny. SNES is my first console ever, and probaly the most nostalgic for me, but I really don't think I can even get to 50 without scraping the bottom of the barrel.

It depends what you like I guess. The snes was my teenage years (had a nes, gb and c64 before that) and these were the games I enjoyed the most but i dont have many sports titles either. Just starting to buy some rpg's now :)

That and all the ports/remakes/compilations that have come out over the years.

I just dropped another $120 on about 13 games. Two were boxed -- Resident Evil 2 on the N64 and an absolutely flawless copy of Pilotwings for the SNES -- and the rest were pretty good titles, such as Adventure Island I and II, and Adventures of Lolo 1 and 2. The crown jewel of this purchase, however, was Panic Restaurant for a mere $10. As soon as I saw it my heart skipped a beat and the thrill of the hunt was perfectly encompassed in that one brief moment.

I originally hadn't planned on buying any games today. I had previously bought several games off of this fellow before. He had several craigslist postings, and I decided to send him an e-mail, even though the listing touted "Hundreds of games including sports games starting at $2". I was skeptical at first, but he wasn't a dealer, just a guy who had amassed a large, large collection of old video games throughout his life. I could not believe how many boxes FULL of Nintendo games he had. In the recent past, I picked up several other games from him, including a boxed copy of Rainbow Islands for $10. Sadly, when I took my buddy, he totally scooped up a copy of Contra Force for $10 that I had apparently missed.

Today, he e-mailed me telling me that a dealer was coming by at 8 P.M. to buy a large portion of his collection. I managed to get one last crack at his goods, and low and behold, I am sure glad that I did. The best news is that he has more games in storage that he's going to let me have the first crack at when he pulls them out.

$120 for 13 games is actually not bad, that's roughly $9-$10 per.

I'd say my best finds had to be:

Super Mario 3 for 50 cents
Nintendo Power mags (numbered 7-80, roughly 40 of them) 15 bucks
Boxed Castlevania, Mike Tyson's, and Original Mario with system and boxed wireless acclaim controller $10
Sega Saturn with a dozen games for free
Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for DC complete for 10 bucks

I find deals all the time like this.... it's all about the thrill of the hunt.

This is Chubby; He hates Game Case Sellers who steal our artwork to profit their lazy kingdoms.

But he sure loves his Shaq Fu!

That's what I figure. I'd be thrilled to get awesome games for 2 bucks a piece, but I am still very pleased to get awesome games for $10 each that originally retailed for $50-$60 bucks.

You should develop some games for it, to make use of that $150 investment.

Shit, I know nothing about that sort of thing, plus I hear it's about the toughest thing from that generation to program for after the N64 itself :/

I have always had a soft spot for RPGs, so I am always scouring ebay in search of ones I don't have. So as a result I have to really watch my ebay spending to avoid running the credit card up to high.

And now that repro carts have entered the scene. Its like the 90s all over again. Tons of 16 bit rpgs that I have never heard are now playable on my very own snes. I feel like a kid in a candy store.  still cant believe that I have a playable star ocean cart. It was worth every penny of the 70 bucks i dished out for it.
