Genesis Suggestions

Quazimoto:

There's a beavy of good to great platformer type games available for the Genesis (sorry, I'm not into fighting games, so I couldn't suggest any of those).

Some platformers that I have in my own collection and would highly recommend to anyone looking for good Genesis games...

Ristar
Sonic 1, 2, & 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Dynamite Headdy
Rocket Knight Adventures
Aladdin
The Lion King
Toy Story
Pocahontas
Quackshot
Garfield: Caught In The Act
Chuck Rock & Chuck Rock II
Toki: Going Ape Spit

I hear that both Castle Of Illusion and World Of Illusion are great games as well, but I'm not a big Mickey Mouse fan myself, so I don't have those personally.

Other non-platforming games (though some come close to blurring the line between platform and action genre) that you might want to look into acquiring...

Comix Zone
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Haunting Starring Polterguy
Altered Beast
Flashback : The Quest For Identity
Vectorman
X-Men 2: Clone Wars
Shadow Dancer: The Secret Of Shinobi
Revenge Of Shinobi
Shinobi III
Splatterhouse 2 & 3

A handful or so of the games above can be sort of difficult and expensive to trackdown, but for the most part, you should be able to find everything listed above in the $10-$15 range for a complete copy in very good condition.

FFXIK:

As far as the 32X and Sega CD are concerned when it comes to platforming and fighting games.  Is small numbers at best.

Some of the better ones
32X
Knuckles Chaotix
Kolibri
Virtua Fighter
Mortal Kombat II

First two of those are fairly expensive though $25-50 cart only, the other two can be had on other systems.

Sega CD
Eternal Champions
Mortal Kombat
Samurai Shodown
Don't know what you consider platformer
Wild Woody
Earthworm Jim SE

EWJ and SS are pricey hitting $50-70 complete.

There really isn't much on either system in the way of platformers and fighters that would make it worth your while.  The Genesis itself has an impressive library of games all round.  If youstill want to get a 32X and SCD by all means go for it.

Quazimoto made some great suggestions.  I would like to add Sparkster, the sequel to Rocket Knight Adventures.  That game was fun.

AppleQueso:

Sega CD has some cool unique titles. Popful Mail is a great action/platformer/RPG hybrid for example.

Anyhow, as far as platformers go,

...nobody mentions Castlevania: Bloodlines?
