While looking at the Game.com covers thread and seeing mention of the R-Zone, I had a thought - wouldn't those old Tiger LCD games from the early 90's fit in a UGC? And for that matter, I think other brands of LCD games could fit in a UGC.

http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Tiger/index.html

You can see here there are several different kinds shapes and sizes for these Sonic games after the original run: http://www.sonicgear.org/USAPages/LCDGamesUSA.html

I don't have any handy, but I know I had Star Trek The Next Generation, Batman Returns and TAS, Home Alone 2, Power Rangers and a Sonic the Hedgehog game at least. I also remember a DuckTales game and some kind of Street Fighter. They're probably in storage somewhere. I suppose these are on the border between toys and video games, but I think it'd be cool to case them. Anyone have any handy that can see if they fit in a UGC? If not in that, maybe they could fit in VHS cases or multi-disc DVD cases.

If so, perhaps someone could come up with a template or two for these - maybe a Tiger one and a generic one.

there was a thread somewhere for casing the nintendo game&watch handhelds - and its on my list to continue the theme to do my own grandstand lcd games.  i will probably go for VHS cases, as thats what i've put all my handeld consoles in.

Not sure when i'll get to it though.

Awesome! I was hoping they'd fit, just based on what I remember and seeing videos of people holding them.

On a related note, I also found that I had all 3 of these:

They all fit in a single UGC, though it may be more practical to house them in something smaller.

I'm working on throwing together a simple template for Tiger Handheld game covers. Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking it should be kept pretty simple, like NES vertical covers, with something common on all the spines.

I have one of these. Id imagine it would be pretty rare to find suitable scans of the original packaging. You'd most like have to go completely custom on covers for these.

I have an unopened Sonic the Hedgehop 3 one of these but i don't think there is really anyway to scan the packaging in without opening it.  :-\

Why not?  Is it in a blister pack?

@BadChad: Yeah they'd have to be custom, since there's no common look across the original packaging for each game. I'm actually studying what images I can find of the original packaging so I can set up some common elements for a template. I'm mostly finding images on eBay auctions of all places. Here's an example (scroll down): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tiger-Electronic-LCD-Video-Game-Sonic-The-Hedgehog-2-/330503416775?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf389ebc7

It's not nearly complete yet, but here's a look at what I have so far (the spine and some of the art is most likely temporary):

In the case of Sonic 2, and probably most of the Sonic games, hi-res versions of the art used can be found, but I think others may have to be completely custom.

If someone can pinpoint the font that they used for their text like "Electronic LCD Game", that would be very helpful. Also maybe this is posted somewhere, but what's the best place to exactly recreate UPC bar codes like on the back of the packaging I linked above? I've found bar code makers but I'm not sure which one to use.

That's a pretty good start. Just gotta get Robotnik in there with the text next to his face, maybe a Sega spine logo, the UPC and your nearly finished!

Here's an update:

Link is same as above - I updated to the new version.

I found the correct Sonic art, and moved some things around. Yep now I just gotta find the Robotnik art, make the UPC (whats the best place for that?) and add in the bullet points from the front. I also need a better image of the device for the front.

Here's what would be consistent across all of them:

For the covers I make, I'll almost always have the device in the center of the front (like the original packaging) and I'll try to get a screenshot or two for the back.

Yeah it is

Lameness.

You know, retailers like Amazon and Target were trying to ban blister packs for a myriad reasons.  Of course, old Wal-Fart put the kibosh on that plan.  Blister packs are about the cheapest packaging that there is, and with Wal-Mart essentially dictating the prices for a massive number of products, it just wasn't gonna happen.  They weren't gonna pay more for the same products in different packaging, and with the slim margin that companies make selling through Wal-Mart, nobody could afford to switch to non-blister packaging for their products.  It's über, super lame.

...make the UPC (whats the best place for that?)...

There are a few ways.  1, go here: http://www.barcode-generator.org/ or, 2, search sites like www.1001freefonts.com for a barcode font.  That's what I use, and it makes the process so freakin' simple.  Here's one that's free: http://www.barcodesinc.com/free-barcode-font/

Well, I haven't quite finished up the Sonic 2 cover, but I think the template is pretty much ready. There isn't much to it: a spine logo, some text on the front and back, and the copyright/contact/UPC area.

DOWNLOAD TEMPLATE HERE: http://www.box.com/s/haulepieto5tg2ml95nc

If anyone wants to tackle any kind of Tiger Electronic device that will fit, I'd just recommend trying to locate images of the original packaging so you can change the Model No. on the front and back, the UPC barcode, and Tiger copyright date at the bottom. I also left the "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 1992 SEGA" part on the back so people can change it or leave it off completely. You can also change the color of all the text to whatever is appropriate for that cover.

I'm also uploading a folder of images I've collected. It contains reference photos I could find for some of the LCD games' packaging. If anyone wants to take a try at some of those, you're welcome to.

http://www.box.com/s/o1t27l150pmzxctk0ehx

Sonic 2 just needs the Robotnik image, but I'm not having much luck finding it without Sonic covering up part of the "2". If anyone can help me out that'd be great, otherwise I'll just put in a different image of Robotnik.

After Sonic 2, I'm going to try my hand another Tiger Electronic LCD device. Though not technically a game, I believe it should fit in a UGC and I personally think it warrants a corresponding cover:
