Bullshit. There are several Ps3 games that go up to 1080p, and the ps3 outputs 1080p just fine when in the menus or watching blu rays.
My Genesis via that scart to component transcoder looks quite nice on my HDTV. Probably a bit better than my SNES even, very crisp. No issues whatsoever on my TV with a 240p signal. Besides, those scart cables and the transcoder could be used in conjunction later with a DVDO Edge to get an even nicer image. Hardly a waste in the long run.
If you want a CRT, hit up garage sales or pawn shops. $20-50 should get you something pretty nice and they'll probably even be willing to knock the price down for you. I wouldn't even bother trying to find a new CRT, especially if your plan is to replace it down the road.

I don't know a whole lot about the technical reasons why, but I do know that my PS3 looks amazing on the new TV.
I do wish I had the funds in the near future to spend on getting a really nice upscaler or scart cable and transcoder, but I just don't make enough for that. Most of what I do make goes to help out either my Brother or my parents (which frankly, is a worthier cause than my playing video games, lol). Plus, with my Brother's wedding coming up in two months, the budget is already pretty thin. I figured I could spend about $50 in the next few months in order to get the Genny up and running nice again, so I was hoping it would be a nice easy one or two cable fix in that price range. Doesn't seem like that's the case when it comes to my particular TV (from what I hear, some LCD TVs have no issues playing vintage systems with standard cables). I managed to stumble on a really nice cabinet for free and from the looks of it, I can get a smaller sized TV pretty reasonably priced right in my general area (ie not needing to drive far to pick it up). Got some errands to run later this week, so I'll hit up some pawn shops and garage sales, see if I can't find me a nice set. That'll suffice nicely until my DVDO Edge/Vintage system fund grows large enough for at least a scart cable and transcoder. Might get that then or might just keep saving for the edge. We'll see when the time comes.
