Would it be cheaper to go buy legal sized paper + printer ink and print covers at home, or to go to Staples and have it all printed there?

I would say it would be cheaper to have a place like Staples do it for you. Jut be aware that some have issues printing things like this as they're worried about copyright infringement. However, I've seen the results of some of these places and I was not impressed with some of them. Others looked perfectly good. I'm of the camp that if want something done right you need to do it yourself.

If you crunch the numbers, I guarantee that it's cheaper to do so at home.  I use really pricey paper, and I bet it still doesn't cost me nearly what it does to have them printed for you, plus I have control over quality, saturation, etc.  I also don't have to drive to staples, which is a bonus.

Be careful, sometimes the clerks at Staples/office max don't know how to print properly and the covers wont ever turn out right

I do mine at the local library for $0.15 a pop using undercover XP
