As a suggestion, why not have the cart port fit exactly where an original gb would sit, and then just cut down the case to where advance games could go in also?

Does that make sense?  ???
What are you looking at? You think baby's don't like video games? THEN YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BABIES!!

Because it would be ugly, plain and simple. I don't want exposed PC board sitting out back :(

Put the cartridge port on an adjustable slider, so that you can slide it up for GBA games, but slide it down for GB/GBC Games. :D

That would probably be too hard to do though...

That would be really tough, especially considering room limitations.

The only other thing that I've been considering is keeping the original port for GB/GBC games AND putting the SP port in the battery compartment. It's still a possibility, I'm just not looking forward to all that soldering. Sooooo many pins to connect...

Where are you putting the L & R buttons? When I was considering this mod, I wanted to either make portions of the battery cover into the buttons, or place the buttons directly above the compartment.

Sort of in between the battery cover and the cart port. I tried to put them about where my fingers fall naturally when holding the GB :)

Do those Micro faceplates have the clear plastic in front of where the screen would go or is it just a hole? Also, how much? I am looking for a replacement faceplate for my Micro. Mine has a scratch down the middle which makes gaming distracting.

I'm aiming for full compatibility. I had to stop last night. Got to a point where I needed to use the dremel, and I'm pretty sure waking my wife up at 3 am with a power tool would land me in hot water :P

lol'd!, yes many a time ive been modding and had to stop cos i didnt think the dude in the appartment upstairs would appreiciate power tools after midnight!

still, looking smooth so far!

It's as close to the original design as possible, so yes, it has plastic covering the screen. The guy that makes em wanted to just leave a hole, and I was like "no way", that glass screen shouldn't be exposed plus it would look like poop.

I do have to change the design slightly. The holes for the speaker are a tad tiny. It makes it hard to keep them open with the process that we use. These are basically adhesive-backed resin badges. I used to work with this guy when I worked as a vendor on a few auto enthusiast forums, and he always did beautiful work. I did custom badges for various vehicles and applications.

The process involves making a printed and cut polymer decal then adding a layer of resin on top (to seal and protect the decal). They look a little different from the OEM faceplates (see the slightly rounded edges around the buttons and whatnot), but the thickness and surface feel are great!  I've been playing my orange one a lot and if anything, it actually feels better than the original. The softer edges plus the softer nature of the resin make for a more comfortable feel, especially after long use.

The only real downside is that they aren't easily removed, and once they are, they may not go back on as nicely since the adhesive will have been disturbed. But who wants to take off their totally custom faceplate anyway, right?  You gonna put the ladybug plate back on to evoke your feminine side and impress that new gamer girl that you met las week?  Don't worry about it, she thinks ladybugs are lame and would way rather see your custom Final Fantasy micro anyway ;)

Haha!  Makes me wanna soundproof a small area in my studio just so I can do this sort of thing at 3am when I'm way to amped to sleep ;D

It's working out nicely. The whole cart port thing is the biggest hurdle by far. Literally everything else is worked out. I think I can make it work with the dual port system. Just gonna take a whole lot of very careful trimming of both the SP or original GB boards to make everything fit. Luckily I have about a half dozen extra SP 101 boards around, so I can screw up pretty badly and not be stuck having to spend more $$$. I even think I'm gonna use some GameCube X and Y buttons for the L and R triggers.  Total Nintendo Frankenmonster :D

Out of curiosity, what did you do for the cart port?  Based on what you've said so far, I presume you didn't bother with GB/GBC compatibility.

And on a totally unrelated note, the postman handed me this as I was walkin out the door this morning. Ran back in just to check it out, but no time to play just yet. I won't give away what it is just yet (don't get too excited, it's a pretty common repro), but you'll know soon enough when I get the cover/label/box art done. I think I'm gonna be working with the maker of this repro in the very near future so that Rose Colored will be able to offer repros and custom artwork :D I are teh excite!

The Micro faceplate does look fantastic. For myself, the only time I would take it off would be to replace a damaged one. No problems there! Let us know how the progress goes. You do amazing work as always.

Then I'm excited when you find someone that can and will translate manuals from Japanese to English, And make really good quality manuals.
Haven't recieved my order from one certain place so I can't judge the quality of their manuals.

I have several manuals that I'd like translated, ones like:

- Aquiltallion
- Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu
- Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden
- Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden 2 (Dragon Ball Z: La Leyenda de Saien)
- Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden 3
- Dragon Ball Z: Super Goku Den — Totsugeki-Hen
- Final Fantasy 5
- Front Mission: Gun Hazard
- Panel de Pon
- Slap Stick
- Super Bomberman 4
- Super Bomberman 5
- Super Bombliss
- Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss
- Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss Limited Edition
- Super Tetris 3
- Tetris Battle Gaiden
- Tetris Flash

For the green ones I have US or PAL version's English manual but, I want Japanese manual translated and made in to US style manual.
For the red ones I have (or soon will) PAL version's non-English manual (French and/or Spanish), so I want both it and Japanese manual translated and made in to US style manual.

good idea for the buttons, those kidney shaped ones would look cool!

i only use mine for GB and GBC games, for illuminated GBA ive got an afterburnered one!

so, ive got the port mounted at the right height so that the top of the carts sit flush with the top of the case.

ive had an idea, probably TOTALLY impracticle for this but, couldnt you just mount the port low down, so that GB/GBC games sit flush, them buy a load of GB carts and swap out the boards for gba ones?, extra stealth!

Thanks!  I just have to nail down the price. The prototype came with an order of 200 other badges that I had made up for a local tuner friend of mine, and a few others for another guy.  I know what all those items cost me, but the remainder of the cost was shipping and the faceplate, so I'll have to talk to him to get an exact figure. He's on vaca in Jamaica right now, but I'll be in touch with him as soon as he gets back and THEN I'll actually having pricing.

Honestly, I do sometimes just go go go for days on end. I actually didn't sleep at all tonight. Just worked on the GB all night ;D

Thanks for the compliment!  BTW, your avatar makes me smile every time I see it :)

As soon as I get pricing on my end, then I'll start a group but thread ASAP.

I'd check eBay for the battery cover. Not something that I can just make or anything like that.

I'm actually in the middle of writing up a whole mess of FAQs about all sorts of stuff, painting included. If you're itching to do it ASAP, then shoot me a  PM and we can chat.

Arseen, of course you lay out a TON of work, and I can't even do that sort of thing (translate) LOL!

Doc, figured out a simpler solution for GBA compatibility. I'm so happy that I don't have to try and figure that whole mess out. This was a snap. A ton of work, but almost zero thinking involved :D

Should be pretty smooth sailing from here. I think I'm actually going to use the original SP R & L buttons. The fit the contour of the back of the GB really well, it's just a matter of modding them and the case.
