Well I've done some investigation and it appears that there is definitely no known way to back-light a GBC. However I did find an example of a front-lit GBC mod that looks very good:

It's all jibberish to me, maybe you understand it Wiggy? Hope it's helpful.

Basically NONE of the non-illuminated color systems can be backlit because of how their LCDs are designed. Just can't happen.

But, pretty much every B&W portable CAN be backlit and so can systems like the Game Gear that are already rear lit from the get go. I'd just be adding an LED-based light instead of the fluorescent tube that they often use.

I don't like that the guy uses the front light turned like that. The light is going to be slightly uneven no matter what, but I think it makes more sense being uneven top to bottom versus side to side. I would just whip out the dremel and cut it down. It's just a plastic screen with a filter and a paper thin metal "mirror".  The dremel would cut it down in a snap and then it would fit with far less fuss.

Hmm makes sense. I suppose the only way to have a "backlit GBC" would be to cram the guts of a GBA SP AGS-101 into a GBC shell.  :P

Still it's pretty awesome that it could be front-lit, and that the GB and GBP can be back-lit.

I know you may not be interested in this project at the moment amongst your many other projects, and you obviously know a lot more than me, but I found an explanation of basically what I believe the guy on YouTube was doing to replace Nomad screens:

Definitely a huge improvement.

I've been trying to get the stuff to do a backlight mod myself but have failed many times.

I'd love to try and tackle an LED mod for the Nomad/GameGear/Lynx, but I don't have one on hand, and I refuse to experiement on someone else's console. I'll have to pick up examples of my own at some point. I also don't really have time at the moment :/

It's nearly impossible to do without the custom ribbon cable. The solder points would be insanely small, and anything thicker than said ribbon cable would be really difficult to squeeze into the GBA phat. The cable that I have requires only one solder point, and it's relatively easy to access :)
