It's actually a '93. I modded it :P

why do you insist on using SMD LED's? surely mounting a regular LED would be much easier!, do you just have a large stock you want to get rid of or something??

I'll have to snap a pic of where and how it's mounted. This was really my only choice if I wanted to use that particular location.

Also, I like to torture myself ;D

Haha!  Now I WANT to mod a penny!

So, my buddy and I were gonna play some sort of head-to-head VMU mini game or some shit like that.  Of course the batteries in all of my VMUs are toast (SURPRISE!).  Instead of buying 6 bucks worth of CR2032 batteries that will last me about 30 minutes, I said fudge it, and built a hack-n-slash AC adapter from and old Gameboy adapter :P

Ugh, deader than a doornail.

Take that, you stupid VMU!  No more will you be able to infuriate me with your crappybattery choice and 3 minute battery lifespan.

Here's what I was talking about.

It's side-facing, so the light floods that little recessed area.  Trust me, if a 3MM LED would've fit, then that's what I would've used.

Yup yup!

I'll also be selling kits for folks that wanna DIY. It's not too tricky. I'd include a good set of instructions to go along with the kit :)

WS Crystal No can do

Neo Geo Pocket Color Ditto

Game Boy / Color Totally possible

Lynx Also doable as I understand it

2 first two would require an entirely redesigned screen, like the GBA SP-101 (which is what I'm using for the old GBAs).  They can't be lit from behind as is :(

The GB and GBP I know for a fact are doable, but I'll have to take a look at the color.

I have an old busted Lynx.  I'll take a look at it and what makes it tick.

edit: Oh yes, the Lynx is entirely possible.  It's lit with a fluorescent tube like the Gamegear.  Wouldn't be hard at all ;D

I'm pretty sure the Game Boy Color is doable, since I've seen mods on YouTube, and I believe they used the GBA SP light (not sure if it was front or back-lit version).

Not to get too ahead of myself, but do you think one day you might be able to offer LCD screen replacements and installation for Game Gear and/or Sega Nomad? I've seen several people on YouTube who offer to do that and also replace the Nomad's rechargeable battery with a modern rechargeable battery, but I would much rather go with someone here I can trust to do it to a real quality standard.  ;) Here's an example of one of those people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bix64MUBx-8

EDIT: Also, caught up on what I missed in this thread while I was gone - GBA Micro faceplates?! Count me in!

With a little paint on the A and B buttons, I'm sure people would love to see these concepts realized:

That's actually why I texted you today.  I figured you'd be the 1st to want one ;)

You can front light just about anything, but back lighting can be tricky.  Some screens (like the GBA and NGP) cannot be backlit and must be front lit.  The SP (101) came with a backlit screen, but cannot simply be plugged into a normal GBA or even a non-backlit SP (001).  It requires some crafty wiring to make it work.

It may be possible with the GBC, but I haven't looked at it yet.

So what do you do exactly with that GB?  Is that an SP in a GB shell?!

I'm pretty sure the Game Boy Color is doable, since I've seen mods on YouTube, and I believe they used the GBA SP light (not sure if it was front or back-lit version).

Front light is 100% possible on any non-illuminated screen.  Back light is another story (see above).

Maybe.  It's not on my current list of things that I plan to offer :/  That is a sweet looking mod though!  :o

Paint?  Pffffff, I'll cast fresh new buttons in any color you want ;)
