Looks like you got a good TV then, so you won't need an upscaler.  What kind of TV do you have?

Samsung LN46C630. The odd thing is that if you google around you end up finding a bunch of people claiming that it has really bad input lag... I know that there are different panels and that the SQ and SS panels are supposed to be much better than the AA ones. Perhaps the ones with horrible lag use the AA panels?

Either way I guess what matters is that i'm personally satisfied with  my gaming experience, which I definitely am. Besides, this TV was a bargain. Scored a display model, got 50% off the sticker price so it was only $350ish

My guess is that you are just used to the shitty picture.  I was the same way, I totally thought my TV was the shit until I started reading and really noticing that it was not as good as it used to be on my tube tv.  I hope I don't sound like an asshole lol, I just don't believe you're getting a great picture on a $350 HDTV.  Good scalers alone cost more than that, therefore I cannot imagine your TV has scaling that good.  I never had a lag problem though, so I'm with you there, that anyone would notice right away.

$350 for a display model, as in it was marked down, no remote, no stand. Fifty percent off the sticker price, so if you haven't noticed it wasn't a $350 TV, it was a $700 one.

And please, 'used to a shitty picture'? Yeah, that's totally why I was completely dissatisfied with the way my older consoles looked in composite with the horrible dot crawl and overall fuzziness and actually went out and bought a scart > component converter and started getting RGB scart cables for every system I owned. It wasn't until I was feeding my TV delicious 240p goodness that I was happy with the way my games looked. Does it look like a CRT? Well obviously no, it looks more like an emulator in fullscreen, but it's a clean and clear image.

Would the scaler look a bit better? Probably. Better enough for me to throw down an extra $350 on it? Probably not. I'm glad you got things looking the way you wanted though. Modern displays are really finnicky things aren't they?

Are you considering getting an SLG3000? It's a scanline generator, it'll really hammer home the CRT look. Frankly if I was going to buy a scaler it'd be to use it in conjunction with one of those. What kind of signal are you feeding the DVDO? Just composite and/or s-video? How does the NES look? That's a real killer for me, the only way I can seem to get the NES looking good on my TV is to just play the games via Wii's virtual console.

Does using RGB and running through component really bring a noticeable gain in PQ over composite?

Oh god yes. Especially if compsoite is all you're used to. It's not as much of an improvement over s-video though, but my tv doesn't have s-video input so EH.

I use the DVDO EDGE for all my composite consoles, and my NES looks awesome!  I use the NES-101 (top-loader) modded for composite output.

Hmm... a DVDO EDGE would certainly cost less than getting an NES RGB modded. I might be looking into that in the future after all...

Ya, but do you use the top-loader? You will need a composite mod...  My mod guy does it for $40.00

Nah, mine's a frontloader. Got a new connector in it and everything. It works quite well, just looks crummy on my TV.

If I had a toploader, I could probably handle the composite modding myself actually. I've done my fair share of modding before.
