Okay, so I created a separate topic to discuss this, per Snowcone's post regarding the idea of the community coming to a consensus regarding the idea of cover artists taking credit for their individual work on the covers themselves.  I pulled as many directly related posts as I could out of the other topic without bringing in any of the other discussion.  Since I didn't want to edit any other posts (aside from my own), there were a few posts where people had already stated an opinion on this subject that weren't copied over, as they were mostly focused on the other topic.  Please do feel free to join in this new discussion and please don't feel that I'm trying to hide/or negate your opinion on the matter.

So, here's the discussion - should cover artists be allowed to include - at their individual discretion - a small line of text or some sort crediting them as the creator of their individual covers?

Don't be confused by the term "Watermark" - as we're not talking about a huge logo or text that spans the length of the cover - no one wants that.  In fact, I'd prefer to stop using the term "watermark" in this discussion at all, as I feel it might be a bit misleading.

What I'd like to do is run this topic for a little while to discuss the issue and let all view points be openly discussed.  Obviously, we want to keep this civil, but I don't think that will be an issue, as we pretty much have a great group of people on this site.  So please, chime in on the discussion.  However, this isn't a vote - this is merely a discussion for us to openly communicate and talk about the pros and cons of allowing individuals to receive credit for their own work.  IF, at some point later in the discussion, it is decided that we should bring this to a "vote" (either an open vote for anyone or a closed vote for cover artists/gurus), then that can be done - but for now, I think we should just have an open discussion about it.

Second - to correct/add to what Arseen said - the site hosts two kinds of covers: Retail and Custom.  The idea of a "Retail" cover is that it should match the retail release as close as possible (this gets tricky when it comes to things like, say, NES Spines) - on these kinds of covers, it's generally not recommended to add any kind of credits to the cover although - and I could be wrong and someone can correct me on this - I don't believe there's any specific policy against it.

As for custom covers - they're exactly as they sound - custom work by the artist.  While most artists don't clearly label these covers, I don't see any reason why they couldn't.

Someone can correct me if any of this is wrong.

I think the policy is no artist names on covers.

But we need confirmation from Cover Admins on that.

I'm not talking about the giant watermarks that span the length of the image or anything - I'm talking about something put into, say, the legalize-text or such saying "This custom cover created by..."

If I'm correct, some of our earliest cover artists would put stuff into the UPCs...

YES. I already said that least twice on this topic. Cover Admins can confirm this.
I have read this on many topics and vote has always been against the watermarks.

Technically we have no policy against adding your name in some unidentifiable place and i'm sure we host covers today with artist names snuck in. I'll leave it to the community to determine a stance on this as it's usually invisible to the eye when printed.

Here's how I feel about an artist signing his/her cover - if I have to choose between a cover with a simple "Created by" text somewhere on the cover vs. not having a cover AT ALL, I'd rather have the cover.  Every time.  Can anyone explain to me what's wrong with that?

<devil's advocate>

What if the artist's name was 'fuckface'?  Would you still print out a cover with the words, 'Created by fuckface' on it?  ;D

I know you're being cheeky, but - yes.  If my option is no cover vs. a cover with small text in the corner that says "fuckface", I'll take that.  Virtually no one is going to see that in my collection of 300+ cased games.

The way I see it, is, as I said before - if the tits boil down to either I get a cover with a small credit on it or I get no cover, I'll take the cover with the small credit.

Personally, I see NO DOWN SIDE to allowing cover artists to take credit on their covers, so long as they meet all over quality criteria.  If someone wants to come along later and create a full retail cover without the credit, that option is ALWAYS open.

If we allow cover artists to include a small credit on their cover, then those who want to include it can and will be happy and those who don't want to include it can leave it off and be happy.  If we deny cover artists the right to take credit for their hard work, then we'll tick off those who want credit, meaning less covers for all.

Also - note, I don't create covers... I don't have the software or the talent to do so, so I'm not crying for credit on my own work or anything.

I am completely 100% against including the artists name on any cover that we create.  Why should i be entitled to put my logo and/or name on the cover that i cleaned up or manipulated when the original artist who made the cover for Nintendo, Activision, Atari etc was not allowed to put theirs?

The way I see it is a cover should only include the same type of text, picture or art that the original had.  Lets not confuse that with custom art, custom text and different pictures, that is no problem in my eye (obviously  :P as i do that a lot). I'm more concerned with how the original cover was presented.

Video game designers did not let the artist put any sort of personal logo or anything on the retail covers they made for them. I don't think that we should either. I know that can be kind of hard to grip what i am trying to describe but i am having a bit of difficulty explaining  :-\   If the person who made the cover actually CREATED the artwork used themselves (ie painted, drew, etc) then i have no problem if they have their signature incorporated in the artwork used.

So far we haven't let anyone put their logos on covers and I think it has worked out great. I would love to maintain that consistency.

I'd photoshop it out before hosting it on the site ... I've already done this before. If anyone puts their personal logo or "created by" text i remove it before its hosted on the site.

As far as listing the artists name I'd probably list it as F***Face.  As regulars know i'm very against unneeded vulgarity.
