Yep, but then distributing it to others is the problematic part.

And technically you don't own the art. You own a reproduction/print of the artwork.

How are you even considering criticizing how people are reacting to this? What you've done is VERY unethical, and it still is even if you're saying "but you can get them free here!"

Yet again we have 4 pages of crying about covers for sale. It really boils my tits. Yes my tits - are boiling ;D
Gamecaseworld is providing a service. Simple Supply and demand. I don't care what they charge, but other people obviously think its a fair price to have a cover printed, trimmed, cased, posted and arrive at their door. If they didn't gamecaseworld would never have sold any. Just because YOU think it's a rip off, and YOU are happy printing your own covers doesn't mean that others won't think it's a fair price for the service.
As for them charging for your covers (I don't think they have any of mine) - you don't own the original art, and you released your cover to the Internet without limitation, so it is going to be used. Who cares if some entrepreneur makes a few dollars from it? sounds like You're just pissed you didn't make the money yourself.
Nothing unethical - you live in the land of the free don't you? (although someone needs to remind SOPA of that)
The only person I would see having a valid gripe here is shenske, as he designed the template. But again he released it to the Internet, and knows people will do as they please with it.
Gamecaseworld are now linking back to us, they are sharing some of their covers with us (go sell those if you want some revenge) and they are closing down the service - stop whining about it, and give them a break. Perhaps their great artists will hang around and contribute.
And to everyone that's whining - can you honestly, hand on heart tell me that you do not have anywhere on your computer/ipod/phone etc a single movie, music file, piece of software past it's trial period that you don't have the original of? Because that is what is illegal and unethical. (if you dont have any unsolicited files, then well done - have a gold star) People in glass houses and all that.
Just my opinion - as things were a bit one sided in here!

Yay! I gets a gold star :P
On another note. What you're saying is that, if they had used your covers and not givin credit. You would have been fine with it. Most people I know, tits tend to boil, so to speak, when someone else tries taking credit for work that they put alot of time and effort into. I don't think you're an exception to that.
On the other hand, TCP is now fully credited for their covers, and they were more that generous to upload covers we didn't have here. As far as I see it the issue is nullified. They were very quick to try to bring a peaceful resolution to this. It's over.
The honest truth of the matter is, both GameCaseWorld and thecoverproject are mass violation of existing copyright law. GCW is closing shop because of SOPA and PIPA. Don't forget about ACTA, you should read up on that one it's a doozy. The U.S. has already signed that one. I'm afraid of what those bills and treaties are gong to do to the people of this site.
AppleQueso:
Truthfully, I'd sooner imagine seeing Deviantart shut down because of all the depictions of copyrighted characters before we are. Or perhaps Mobygames with all their box art scans. What about Etsy? I see lots of functional fan-made trinkets based on numerous copyrighted works.
How are we different from those groups? What we make amounts to, at worst, functional fan art. Despite the massive paranoia, our site is not in danger. Shit this site doesn't even get money from ad revenue.
