redsox2012:
I always seem to get burned when I list something as an auction rather than a Buy-it-Now.  I was just looking at recent sales of John Madden Football Championship Edition for the Genesis, and they've been consistently selling for $100-$150.

Two months ago, I decided to sell one of mine.  I usually look at the most recent sales and come up with a reasonable Buy-it-Now price based on that data.  They were selling for around $80 complete back then.  So, I started my auction at $40 and figured I'd generate some interest (and hopefully a bidding war) because mine was absolutely mint - one of the best examples you'll ever see.  I let it run for a week, and it ended up at only $44.

So, apparently in the weeks before my auction people were gladly paying $80+, and in the weeks following my auction they were gladly paying $80+, but in the week that mine was listed nobody though it was worth more than $45.  Now, it's suddenly skyrocketed.  Luckily, I have another one that's in just as good condition, but it still irks me.

Similar thing happened a few months ago when I sold a Paper Mario game for N64.  Loose cartridges were averaging around $30, and I had one in the original box.  I decided to auction it, hoping for some action, and ended up getting $30.01 for it.

Oh well, I guess I could look at the bright side.  Now that the Madden has taken off, my collection is a little more valuable.

As a buyer, I feel similarly. I keep a decent tab of what things are going for, so I always aim for around that value when I'm bidding. Y'know, I want to get a good deal, but I also know the seller needs to feel good about the sale as well (I'll go above value if I REALLY want the item, though). But I feel like it's becoming more and more impossible to actually win a fucking auction anymore without using some kind of sniping tool. The last eight auctions I've bid on were good, solid items I wanted, and I offered decent cash for them, too. Each and every single time I got beat out by some asshole who somehow bid the minimum increment above my maximum bid with 2 seconds left on the fucking clock.

The luckiest I've got recently is a copy of Christmas NiGHTS for $7.00 (I turned out to be double-lucky too, because the guy who sold it sent the damn thing "protected" by a paper CD sleeve in an unpadded manila envelope with the words "DON'T BEND" scribbled on it, yet it somehow arrived in one piece anyway). Everything else I've gotten recently has been from Buy It Now listings. I feel very much like eBay is becoming the new Amazon (for me, at least), in that if I can't just click a button to buy an item immediately I can kiss that shit goodbye. feelsbadman.jpg

EDIT: Oh, why don't I use any sniping tools? 'Cause I feel like that's shady and bullshit and I'd rather not contribute to the problem. I dunno, I guess at heart I still believe in the goodness of my fellow man. What a dumbass I am.

I don't even use eBay that much (have about 30 total purchases) but I swear this has happened to me so often. I didn't even know they can use some kind of programs to snipe.  :o But I always prefer to buy it now, since auctions tend to leave a bad taste in my mouth when I get sniped, like you said, with 2 seconds on the clock and no way to respond.

By the way, the finnish equivalent of eBay, www.huuto.net, works a bit differently: if you make a bid with less than 5 minutes to go on the item, it always extends the time until the end by 5 minutes. It's a really good system for the seller, if there's a lot of last-minute-snipers, but not so much for the buyer. But at least you can still respond if there happens to be some other guy who is watching the item.
