IIRC, later in the episode the guy gets told the NES is basically worthless.

But I'm sure some people only caught part of the episode.

Yup yup. He takes it to an "appraiser/expert" and is told that it's worth like $XX.

People are morons, especially the folks on that show.

And the folks on Swamp People.

And pretty much everyone on most any of the quasi-reality shows on the History Channel.

I imagine that you can lay some of the blame on Storage Wars. It featured an episode in which one of the auction-buying guys (I don't actually watch the show) bought an "NES-001", thinking it was worth $13,000 because that was the price one had fetched at another auction. What he didn't know was that other NES was sold with a sealed copy of Stadium Events. It's likely everyone and their mother who saw that episode thought they were sitting on a gold mine if they had an "NES-001" collecting dust in their crawlspace.

Here's an article that details it a little bit, which includes a link to said episode.

http://kotaku.com/5830709/but-if-you-call-it-an-nes+001-is-it-worth-13000

from what i remember, when i first saw this on youtube, the guy thought "-001" was the serial number, making it the first NES off the production line, which would account for the high price he expected, rather than the 'other' sale...

The "NES-001" episode I have saved on my DVR.  I actually had a very very good laugh at the whole thing.  He was so psyched that he got the NES that he bragged and bragged.  He then went to some local used game shop that delt with retro games and whatnot and the employee had no idea what had happenned with that other particular auction.  He then tried to turn on the NES which according to the employee, It didn't even turn on...then when they asked what the NES was worth, the employee told him $10 bucks.  A bit more then what I expected for a broken NES but the look on the guy's face was priceless.

I did kinda feel bad though that his hopes and dreams were crushed so badly right then and there...

I don' see the point of having a game that you won't play, or that plays the same as a much cheaper game with a different name (see: Stadium Events), and sometimes annoy collectors by voicing this opinion. ;D

The price is just a decorative figurine... These items -if sold- go through the "best offer" option. I do hate VGA btw, graded games removed from potential players is sad, but we gotta appreciate the preservation part. A lot of our golden gems from the 8-16-64 bits era are going to be destroyed by the oxidation taking part on the copper contacts in a century or less.
These, of course, are my Two Cents.

Eh, the emulation and piracy scene is preserving games better than the VGA could ever hope to. :P
