So I sold a iPhone 6 Plus I got in a lot of tech on eBay and I am not much of a apple user and don't know too much about them and plus I could never get it to power on so I listed the phone "AS IS" Over the time I it was on bid people were asking me for the IEMI that was on the back on the device. So anyone who asked I gave it to them. So i ended up selling it for $47 bucks plus shipping I got it for free so I did not care. I mailed it out the next day and the person got it 1 day later. So I got a message from him saying it's not the same item that was in the ad. I went on to remind him I sold it AS IS. After 2 or 3 messages later he asked for a refund so I told him as long as you return the phone I look at it to make sure it's all there I would refund the money. He replayed with "I need you provide a shipping label and $25 to check out and find out thanks". And after i read that I am like no I am not paying for a label and giving you $25 bucks. So today the buyer opened up a case with pictures with the phone on and kinda working. And the IEMI on the board did not match the one I gave him. So i contacted ebay over the phone about the case and they looked into it and because the guy went out to a repair shop and got it working they said "We determined that the item may no longer be in the same condition that it was in when it was sent to the buyer." I don't know if he pulled parts added new parts or what but I ended up with my moneys and the case in my favor.

And of course you can't leave him negative feedback, because eBay feels that sellers shouldn't be allowed to do so because it may deter buyers from leaving negative feedback out of fear that a seller may retaliate with the same.  Yet buyers can still leave negative feedback even when they've filed and lost a dispute. At this point, I wouldn't sell anything on eBay that I would be concerned about completely loosing.  In other words, I don't think I would sell anything that is valued over $25.

These policies are great for buyers who are worried about getting scammed, but terrible for small sellers.  The big sellers don't care, because they sell enough stuff on a monthly basis to cover the loss on the occasional scammer.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

That's about where I'm at with it too.  eBay is my selling dumpster. If it's crap that I can't easily sell on Amazon, IG, or somewhere else and it ain't worth much, then to the dumpster of online sales it goes.

Interestingly enough, I sell fairly frequently on eBay. I've had very few issues, but I think the most important thing is -- you just have to cover your ass in every way possible. And if push comes to shove, you may have to basically yell at an eBay rep. But I'm sure it would be a lot harder to win a case if your account is newer or you lack a lot of feedback. Like others have said, you generally don't want to sell anything you care too much about on eBay.

I don't have the time or energy to call eBay at this point in my life. I've done so before, but I just get all worked up and all for some bullshit that shouldn't be my problem anyway, like how they allow customers to commit fraud.  I should be able to manage my own customer service without eBay policing me and grading me based on my "performance".

With Amazon getting into "handmade" products and everything else that isn't already listed in their database (which used to make selling your own products on Amazon a massive chore), plus etsy has become a LOT more forgiving when it comes to what's "hand-made" and what isn't, it's hard to imagine that eBay will stay on top for all that much longer. Thei treat their sellers like shit, and people are just tired of it.

This is pretty spot on.

Just a little PS -- if anyone ever purchases an item which is advertised as authentic and turns out counterfeit, send me a PM. I've had to deal with this, and I learned how to deal with it. You will have to fight hard for it, but eBay will be legally obligated to refund you. They also CANNOT force you to ship the counterfeit back. In fact, by asking you to ship the item back, they are directly requesting that you break federal law (in the US at least).

Happened to me once. Seller offered 50% refund (item was won 1$, shipping was 20$)... if I ship it back!
I blasted him in my reply, using a bit what you mentionned (item is not legal for sell in this country). I guess he understood he could have problems, got a full refund minutes later.
