Byuu's SNES preservation project.
BadChad:
Anyone tried contacting him and explain what we do here?
Azarkhel:
Nah, I read this:
"Video game boxes, manuals, cartridge labels and ROM images are all copyrighted things. And our country is run by corporations who have already retroactively extended copyright from 14 years to life of the author plus seventy years. And since I'm probably not going to live to see 170, I'll never see anything even in my grandfather's life enter the public domain.
As such, I can not legally distribute them, and since I cannot do so legally, I will not do so at all.
What I can do is release an XML database with game information: a hash of the game itself, the PCB identifier, and the memory map will be things I provide.
So while you guys have politely offered me ways of hosting files, including FTP, file hosting services and torrents, that is not going to happen.
I'm sorry if anyone had the impression this stuff would be distributed. I'm simply archiving it now, before it's lost forever, in the hopes that one day we'll have a way to legally distribute it.
If, and only if, I can get an actual lawyer to vouch for the safety of releasing certain scans, will I do so. It's not that I have any assets that could be lost in court, but I'm not going to risk a lawsuit over video game material."
And that seemed like the end of it.

Scared little guy.
We've been doing it for years and by now the big bad corporations must be aware of us!
The only thing I was always a bit worried about is teh hosting of new gen covers but SNES copyrights? Who cares?
simonbelmont2:
From my point of view, Byuu made the right decision. He did A GREAT JOB with his emulator.
Test this site with Nintendo copyrights and watch what is happening.
I think nobody filled an serious complaint about the covers hosted on TCP and I hope nobody will do this in the near future.
It's a sad "story" but I wish in the future to be a happy ending.
xxdeszarasxx:
Well people have been doing this for ages with Movie, Playstation, Dreamcast covers ect. I personally dont think they care about what you do with your product once you have them. what they do care about is selling their stuff for profit.
Greets,
