From what I understand he's finished archiving the boxes and manuals of the entire US SNES collection, think he's also mae some headway with other regions.

So unbelievably jealous of this resource haha!

Nah, I read this:

"Video game boxes, manuals, cartridge labels and ROM images are all copyrighted things. And our country is run by corporations who have already retroactively extended copyright from 14 years to life of the author plus seventy years. And since I'm probably not going to live to see 170, I'll never see anything even in my grandfather's life enter the public domain.

As such, I can not legally distribute them, and since I cannot do so legally, I will not do so at all.
What I can do is release an XML database with game information: a hash of the game itself, the PCB identifier, and the memory map will be things I provide.

So while you guys have politely offered me ways of hosting files, including FTP, file hosting services and torrents, that is not going to happen.
I'm sorry if anyone had the impression this stuff would be distributed. I'm simply archiving it now, before it's lost forever, in the hopes that one day we'll have a way to legally distribute it.

If, and only if, I can get an actual lawyer to vouch for the safety of releasing certain scans, will I do so. It's not that I have any assets that could be lost in court, but I'm not going to risk a lawsuit over video game material."

And that seemed like the end of it.

Scared little guy.

We've been doing it for years and by now the big bad corporations must be aware of us!

The only thing I was always a bit worried about is teh hosting of new gen covers but SNES copyrights? Who cares?

From my point of view, Byuu made the right decision. He did A GREAT JOB with his emulator.
Test this site with Nintendo copyrights and watch what is happening.
I think nobody filled an serious complaint about the covers hosted on TCP and I hope nobody will do this in the near future.
It's a sad "story" but I wish in the future to be a happy ending.

Well people have been doing this for ages with Movie, Playstation, Dreamcast covers ect. I personally dont think they care about what you do with your product once you have them. what they do care about is selling their stuff for profit.

Ok xxdeszarasxx, I understand what you've said but why they don't let retro roms to be downloadable?
Many examples are romulation, romnation that have restrictions on some roms for copyright infringement...
I think they have all the power to restrict/cut/remove/ban etc the covers for being used freely.
Anyway copyright remain copyright even if you post something that you think is "free" (not for sale/resale).

Man you really have to differentiate a bit.

Playing, owning and downlaoding of roms without having the original is copyright infrigement at it's finest!

Using altered cover art for a completely different case type than orignally intended is a whole other pair of shoes even if not 10000% legal!

Tiktektak my point was this: anythime Nintendo can shut down the site for copyright infrigment (if they are crazy/paranormal) even if we don't sell the covers and put them freely. The covers in the first place are licensed by Nintendo (copyright).
I think replacementdocs was having some problems with the copyright for some manuals. And from my point of view "THIS IS MADNESS". But they have the copyright, they have the rights.
Byuu made that decision because he thinks that can have legal problems with Nintendo in the future.
I was thinking to talk with him and to show him (but I think he knows about TCP and other sites with covers) that TCP and the rest of the sites are alive and no legal actions have occured from Nintendo.

You can say this about covers as well. Anyway don't understand me wrongly. I too buy the originals and play them and support the developer but you see others don't.

well it's legal to download a backup rom as long as you have the original. just like steam does nowadays, if you allready have an original game and you find it on their servers, all you need to do is use your gamekey and you can download the game for free. now the problem with sites like romnation is they cant prove they released those rom's to the public exclusively for gamers who allready own the original games.

On the contrary xxdeszarasxx, downloading roms is illegal, no matter if own the original.
If you read the legal agreement that have Nintendo you will see that roms are ILLEGAL.
