Title: NeoGeoCD Cover Thread
Post by: shenske on August 04, 2007, 12:59:53 AM
The official NeoGeoCD cover thread
by Shenske & Grumbleduke

I've been wanting to work on these for quite some time now.

i've created my own template and i wanted it to be completely original form the other covers out there.
(yes i did use other templates as inspiration ie: wii & dreamcast mostly)

Keep in mind i don't even own the system so i don't have any sort of priority list.
If you want a cover request it through this thread
(thanks to southtown, i probably don't need raws  ;D ).

My template can be found in the template thread or in the link below
http://www.thecoverproject.net/images/templates/template_neogeocd.psd

Well, I don't have a Neo CD, but looking at the way that SNK did their covers, it seems like they were really trying to keep the template light to have a lot of room for the artwork. The big-ass curve you have might be a bit much (and you can probably get away with leaving off the stupid ratings, too).

But I don't exactly have the money to go Neo-collecting, so, y'know, whatever.

Post by: Dante_Ali on August 04, 2007, 01:29:41 AM
Looks very good. As The Warlock suggested, I would make the curve somewhat smaller along with the Neo-Geo logo.

I don't see a problem with the ESRB ratings. I personally would get rid of the black bar with the white stroke - the Wii/PS2/PS3/X360 templates don't have anything of the sort - the ESRB logo is just laid out on top of the artwork.

Finally! I've been waiting for someone to tackle NGCD covers for a long time. I really like your template a lot! Great work!!
Like the others suggested I'd say keep the curve but make it smaller, giving the beautiful SNK artwork more room :) Like Dante suggested get rid of the black bar with the white stroke or make it smaller.

As a personal request, please drop the rating. At least on the front cover. I hate those things, they ruin the beautiful artwork :D Place it on the back if you feel like you have to have it.
But none of the NGCD games I have, regardless of region, have a rating.

i'll take all the suggestions into consideration and get back to you guys with a revised template tomorrow.

i really like the stroke for some reason, i will make it much lighter though.
i will also get rid of the space for the esrb rating on the front and the # of players on the back.

uh, is that Kyo in his 99+ outfit?  Really folks, try to stick to the original artwork...or at least artwork that makes sense.

its sometimes very difficult to find original artwork for older games at high resolution.  especially for systems that weren't that popular

alright here is round number two for the template.

The King of Fighters 96

tell me what you think

well, '96 would be the hardest game in the series to find decent artwork for (used to be '94 until the Rebout).  But I do have something I can scan you tomorrow.

shenske, I digg'em.  I love my NeoCD.  I've only got King of Fighters 94-98, Fire Suplex, and Savage Reign, but I'd be more than happy to upload the scans if you'd like...

that would be awesome, please do!  ;D

i was planning on making covers for the kof games first.
(plus the back scan i have now isn't very high resolution)

if possible could you scan them in at 600dpi, if not 300dpi will be fine.  :)

I would take off one of the corner curves on each side, if I were you. But that's just me.
Title: Re: Neo Geo CD covers
Post by: KaiserWAVE on August 04, 2007, 10:41:25 PM
I second that. I would suggest keeping both curves an the back cover but dropping the lower right curve from the front cover.

If you're doing the KOF covers first you could either have the main characters of each KOF on the front or the newcomers that entered the tournament with every new year (like Iori for KOF '95). If you don't know who that is just ask me or SMMM, he loves the SNK games just as much as I do :) Or maybe take the covers from the DC ports of these games for reference.

If you need artwork you might look here http://www.fightersgeneration.com/main.htm
If you click on the "characters" link on the left you can browse all sorts of fighting game characters (wheter it be SNK, Capcom, Sammy or a bunch of others) by name and some of them have quite some artwork along with info on their first appearance in the fighting world. Maybe that will help you.

In your elegant black template a KOF '95 with Iori wielding his purple flames on the cover would just look so badass :D
Title: Re: Neo Geo CD covers
Post by: shenske on August 04, 2007, 10:51:16 PM
i know who Iori is and a few others.

thanks a ton for the link  :)

could you just make a list of who the main character was for each game

ex:
kof 94 = billy
kof 95 = bob
kof 96 = thorton  ;)

etc.

KOF 94 - 97 is known as the Orochi Saga.

The main character from '94 to '97 is Kyo though there are other characters introduced in the later games who are vital to the storyline.

'95 introduced Iori, a member of the Yagami clan who is the nemesis of Kyo's Kusanagi clan.

'96 introduced Leona and revealed that she is a member ot he Orochi bloodline. For the final battle of '96 Kyo and Iori teamed up. After defeating Goenitzl Iori entered the Riot Of Blood (this is what happens when the power of the Orochi blood awakens) and disappeared.

'97 introduced Shingo Yabuki, a former student of Kyo and Iori. Also new to the tournament was the "New Faces" team (Yashiro Nanakase, Shermie and Chris). At the end of the tournament the New Faces team revealed they were of Orochi Blood as well and that they were 3 of the 4 Heavenly Kings Of Orochi (Goenitz the boss of '96 was the 4th). At the end Yashiro and Shermie killed themselves, Chris gathered their enegery and transformed into Orochi. Orochi battled Kyo and threw him to the ground when Iori appeared and once again teamed up with Kyo. They fought Orochi but he used his power to once again awaken the Riot Of Blood in Iori in order to turn him against Kyo. But Iori turned against Orochi and Kyo made one final blow to defeat the distracted Orochi.

'98 is a dreammatch. It's not part of the KOF storyline. So you could choose one of the fighters you find the best artwork for to be on the cover. I'd like to see Shermie, Yamazaki or Heidern but I don't know how easy it is to find decent artwork. You could also go for a group shot or maybe no fighter at all on the cover. It's your call.

'99 starts the NESTS storyline. The most notable new entry is K', he is the main character of '99. The game's Hero Team was K', Maxima (another new entry in '99), Shingo and Benimaru.

I know that this was a rather long answer to your simple question, but for a fighting game KOF has a pretty estensive and elaborated storyline :)

At least they came up with SOMETHING, unlike some of SNK's competitors :)

And this is just the story up to '99 (because '99 was the last KOF to be released on Neo Geo CD). It just starts to get confusing after that :)

I do like the 95 one.  The 96, not so much.  For a couple reasons

1.  That Leona is distinctly Falcoon, an artist of the more recent games.  His style really clashes with the old art styles.  Doesn't fit.

2.  Leona isn't really the "star" of '96.  She was an important part, but not enough to get a solo cover.  You had a whole lot of stuff also going on.  The boss team, Irori with Mature/Vice, Chizuru, and I think Kyo/Iori teamed up against Geonitz.  Here's a scan for '96 that was used a lot at the time.

http://spoooooooon.googlepages.com/kof96.jpg

I also scanned this that you should definitely use for '97.  There isn't a picture anywhere that sums it up better than this.

http://spoooooooon.googlepages.com/kof97cover.jpg

---

edit: oh for the love of god don't use Shingo for '97.  That'd be like putting Dan from Street Fighter on the cover.  The main focus should be Kyo (he's always the main focus up until 99), Riot of the blood Iori/Leona, the New Faces Team, and Orochi.  They're all in the pic I gave you, as well as Shingo, so usssse it.

---

if you want stick to the character portrait deal, here are some good ones to use for '96.

thanks for the scans i appreciate it.
if you have any other kof scans that would be great!

i'll go ahead and make some alt covers with the older artwork.

... and about the whole shingo thing, i've stated this before i don't know much about the kof series.  I've just been taking the new characters from each game and putting them on the front cover.  I've just been using the very detailed list that KaiserWAVE wrote.

P.S. Dan from street fighter does suck! a lot! So i understand why you don't want shingo on the cover.

I love the '95 covers. Both are great. If I were to decide I'd go with the 2nd cover. I agree with SMMM on '96, despite being a big Leona fan :)

I also agree with his view on '97. Shingo alone would be a bit exaggerated although I think he's underrated.

Your covers are really great! From an artistic point of view (not taking the cover-character-choice into consideration) they're absolutely amazing. Have you uploaded any of these yet or are you still tweaking the template? Do you think you could have the template ready by the end of the week?

Oh, and one last thing, Dan doesn't suck. You can't imagine how rewarding it is to beat your friends using Dan :D

I really like the new-style look of the Neo-Geo CD covers, and I anxiously await the relese of the template. I'm working on some older-style covers myself, based on the cover styles of other Neo ports. I get my artwork from http://www.kawaiidream.net/ (http://www.kawaiidream.net/), it's got a really great selection of hi-res art from many different games. Hopefully this helps with finding artwork.

I stumbled across something else you can use for the '96 cover.  It's fanart, but it's really good fanart.  If you can't come up with anything better, go ahead and use it.

i'm just going to give a little update.  :D

i have had little time to work on anything cover related for the past few weeks.
packing, finalizing paperwork for college and moving to a new city has kept me pretty busy.
(i've lived in the same house since 94' and forgot what a hastle it is to move)

school starts for me on the 27th and i expect to resume making covers a week or two after.
i'm sorry if anyone was anticipating the final Neo Geo CD covers i was making.  there are still some tweeks that need to be done and i will post them in a few weeks.

Well good luck with college (assuming that's what is starting) and wow those ngcd covers are amazing.  The other good thing with ngcd is there isn't that many games for it.  I'm extremely impressed, keep up the great work and I'll be sure to snag them all and print em up =)

Not quite the last, there's King of Fighters '96 Neo-Geo Collection :) This one is one of the rare Neo-GeoCD exclusives.

These are nice and all but if they were created from artwork, scans or pictures with less then 300dpi then they can't be used for our Neo Geo Cd section....

Please be aware of the quality standards..... Thanks....

P.S. If someone is really desperate you could make a cover available by uploading it to megaupload, rapidshare or the likes....

i'll try and get some sort of megaupload file with the rough covers i have right now in the next few days.

i have a request and please don't take this wrong.
is english your first language? if it isn't then disregard what i'm about to write.
when posting can you type in proper english?  its one of my biggest pet peaves when people don't talk correctly.

i didn't really like it either, i made it very quickly. (thats why i put wip under the metal slug covers)
i couldn't find the best metal slug 1 art but i'll search a little more untill its right.

also, trust me i'll only upload work that i'm satisfied with.   :)
(i'd be ashamed otherwise)

I have good selection of high res neo geo stuff available to me. Is there any large differences between the artwork from the cd versions and the carts? Most of my stuff is from the carts, I would imagine this is still useful unless you are trying to stay exactly true to the original covers. If anybody's interested i will post a link on megaupload.

AES and CD covers are the same for the most part. There are some games here and there that have different artwork for either the AES or CD version but generally they're identical.

Are there any scans in particular that you need? I have been looking through my collection(about 6 gb worth) and many of them are custom covers as such they aren't all of the highest quality. Let me know which titles you are looking for and I can tell you whether or not I have anything you can use.

Alright its been a while now and i have been busy landscaping, so with out further ado the link for the King of Fighters covers are located at http://uploads.twoafter.com/ (http://uploads.twoafter.com/). Once I sort through the rest of my collection I will post the Metal Slug covers as well.

These covers are all at 300 dpi and an approximate resolution of 4500 x 2700. Some of the images may be a bit blurry but overall the quality is pretty good. The whole thing weighs in at 665 MB with 48 files total. I will leave this link up for a while so anyone who wants it feel free.

For one you "forgot" King of Fighters '96 Neo-Geo Collection  This one is even one of the rare Neo-GeoCD exclusives. More like a special edition of '96 than a stand-alone game.

http://www.egameaddiction.com/store/productlinks/neogeocd/neo_geo_cd_kingoffighers96collection.htm

And the other one you're missing is KOF '94 :) The first in the series and the one with some of the greatest stages ever created.

I love your covers and after seeing your KOF covers I'm eager to see what you come up with when doing covers for Samurai Shodown. The retail covers for these games look less than stellar.

whatever covers i do next is kind of up to you.  i don't even own a neo geo cd and only have one game (i have a boot disc to play it on the dreamcast  ;D ).

I will look through  my covers in the next few days and let you know if there are any other games I am really looking for. If anyone else has any suggestion just say so, I probably have good scans for them.

I think it's one of your best covers. I like the simple approach. Just having a slug on the cover instead of the obvious cover full of characters and flashy colors. Very stylish.

Looks sweet.  This thread makes me wish I had a Neo Geo CD  :)

No you don't :) I currently have my Neo Geo CD up for auction, the loading times are pretty tedious. While Metal Slug loads pretty quick you have to wait up to 50 seconds between fights on Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. It's well worth it because that's one of the best fighters out there, but with new collections of these games popping up even I as a hardcore SNK fan won't play them on this system.

i have considered making NeoGeoAES covers.

The only problem is the catridges don't fit in UGC.
(catridges are too big  :( )

i'm not entirely sure what the differnence is in size (the UGC vs. the catridge).

I think someone posted a link to a site that sold cases for MVS carts, not sure if they fit AES (only seen MVS carts from a distance).  And they were pretty specific they were for MVS carts.  Also they were $8.50 a case so you would have to really want it if you had a sizable collection.  If you are interested in AES carts I can upload raws of the covers I do have (3 of them lol), but they will need some photoshopping to make them look really nice.

I think that artwork would be better suited for SS IV. Keep the cover you had, it looks good and stays true to the original. I just remembered that it had this messed up artwork. But that's just my oppinion.

But if you feel like it you could do an alternative cover for SS II featuring Genjuro on the cover if you find proper artwork. He's been introduced in SS II and is Haohmaru's nemesis and one of the best known SS character.

Here's some more info
http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters/genjuro.html

NOOOOOOOOO, please, dont forget the haohmaru ss 1 cover, i love it, man, i knew i´d hate to enter your post, EVERYTIME i do it you make me feel bad, cause you dont post it, I NEED YOUR COVERS, GOOD JOB!

don't worry i won't even use the alt cover i made (it doesn't fit the appearance order of the games).
even if i did use that cover it wouldn't replace what i already have made.  I really like the haohmaru cover too  :)

I wouldn't ever want to make you feel bad, sorry man.

i will up them when they are ready.  I don't know much about the NeoGeoCD or hardly any of the game for it.
The thread is more of a trial and error for covers.
(checking to see which characters and artwork go best with each game)
KaiserWAVE has been very helpful to me when sorting all of this out.

I think the first two samurai shodown covers are almost ready but i would like to make another alternate before i upload them.
(fyi that won't be tonight, i just got off of an 10hr shift and now i have a shit load of homework. i will be lucky to finish my homework by 3 a.m.)

edit: i just got done, 6:30 a.m.  Now i get an hour of sleep  :o

Yup that was it.  Wish I knew for sure if the shockbox would fit AES as the cases I do have are kinda cumbly...

The Shockbox does indeed fit the AES carts,I have a few AES carts that I used the Shockbox with...although they fit just a little loosely in the box..not much.

Thanks.. :) Well as for the front logo, the orig version from Souithtown had none.I put it on...did'nt like it,took it off.Trouble is it's a nice pic but with the logo,it all looks kind of cluttered. As i said,it was done for a friend and he liked it without so it was his choice. ;).(but i might try the logo again and post the result).

Neo Geo is pretty low on my list too (was non-existant till a couple of days ago) but he has just asked for a couple of others i might have a go at.Your's allready covered most off his needs nicely .:)

UPDATE:

Ok...a logo-ised version i'm ok with, had trouble making it stand out from the crowd...prefer it without but see what you (and anyone else who cares for that matter!) think Shenske. If opinion goes with the logo...i will overwrite the orig one. How's that for democracy ;).

there is no problem in having both a logo version and a non logo version.

more covers the better  ;D

have you tried to put the logo above the crowd overtop of the dress?
if it doesn't work, no biggie.

Ok...had a busy day of cover related antics today so..

Upped Puzzle Bobble

Taken from the Japanese CD version and added logo's bubbles, critters, more bubbles and a little text.

Upped Robo-Army

Taken from Southtown Homebrew and changed some bits and bobs like backround, words and painted out info about cart meg size.
And so ends this little foray into Neo Geo CD... for now anyway. ;)

Yeah right. I just sold my Neo Geo CD and the next day you pump out these awesome covers ;) That RB2 cover and your latest SamSho III cover are awesome! Great work!

But I got some criticism as well :(

The cover for Fatal Fury looks way too stylish for my taste. It should be more old-school like your Fatal Fury 2 cover, like the Genesis or SNES cover for Fatal Fury we have on the site. The Genesis version has the best cover in my oppinion.

The artwork for Fatal Fury 3 doesn't fit the game. It has two characters on it who are not in this game: Big Bear (the bearded guy with the blue shirt) and Jubei (the old guy on top). I guess it's artwork from the anime.
Maybe, with some tweaking, you can use the CD case scans from fightersgeneration.com.

i have the complete release list of the NeoGeoCD and i did dee the SamSho RPG on there.
That one is going to be a little tough and i'll have to do some research on who was in the game, what the logo loooks like, etc.

there weren't even that many games on the Neo Geo CD (i'm sure you already know) and its totally possible over time to complete the list.  :)

Samurai Shodown RPG...

... or Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits Bushidō Retsuden. For the sake of completing all SS game covers for NGCD,here's the last one. For those who dont know, this was never released outside of Japan on any platform, hence the all Japanese cover. I'm not a big RPG fan but this..i could go for (if i had more than a rudimentry knowledge of Japanese...even the menu's are kanji). There is a project to translate it into english well underway though.I will post a jewel case for this when i finish it and have started to make an english version of the dvd case for when the translation project is complete.

That is the case for both of you. I don't own a NGCD anymore but there's so many great artwork to SNK games on the net it would be a waste to settle for just one cover per game.

I noticed that a bunch of your newer NGCD covers aren't uploaded to the archive yet.
Can you post these great new covers?

Thanks

Chotetsu Brikin'ger "Ironclad" (NTSCJ/NTSC/Custom)

Ok. This is based on the original cd cover but the back is custom and i tried to keep it in the style of the normal NGCD covers. There's very little info or pics of the back that are any good, hence the custom stuff. Kept the JP text for the spine as this is a JP only game in theory.

Though there is almost nothing around for the back, i did find an alternative front scan so i put that in for good measure. Now anyone whos into NGCD will know that Ironclad (or Chotetsu Brikinger for the west) does'nt actually exist unless you have a console with english text turned on. Then it appears. :) So i made up a cover for it with a new title(as there is'nt really one) and a back with a little more than the 2 lines normally written on a NGCD case. The story is translated from a french gaming magazine and im no writer, so it may be a little flaky (similar to the way some other SNK stuff got translated may be? ;D)
Its a bit of an experiment though. Not for the purist probably.

Other (hopefully easier) stuff soon. Very busy at the mo..

I seem to recall that when reading through the Admin board, Snowcone said that if a game had a totallly different name in a different region, then label it under that. I seem to  recall it but i could be wrong... :)

I suppose we didn't agree on any final "regulation".... Only that US region is our regular section we put them in...

I always thought "Ironclad" was only released in Japan though....

Yup, it was Japanese only but released as Chotetsu Brikinger. They were going to release it Stateside as Ironclad but for whatever reason it never happened. However if you boot up the game in a machine with text set to english, you get the Ironclad title page as opposed to the Brikinger one. So really, the Ironclad cover was for a version that never was...

BTW Jediurchin, did you mean Sonic Wings 1+2 or Aero Fighters Assault 1+2 (another case of totaly diffferent names in the east and west. ;))

I posted an alt version of Baseball Stars 2 that has a back worded (and more similar in look) as the CD version is. Its basically the same front as yours (it was yours in fact) so i posted it as a collaboration of both of us. Hope thats ok with you. No imandix as its so similar as to be a little pointless.

Thats fine, no big deal. With the NeoGeoCD covers i did little work when making them so its cool with me if you use any of those covers.  About the name of the artist ... you can just put it under your name. I know a while back the admins (prior to me becoming one) decided not to use dual artist because it would create a bunch of new names in the database.

good job on the cover btw  :)

Well its not the rest of the covers, but its one more. ;) Fantastical shoot em' up in the R-Type vein. I have the AES cart rather than the CD version but i like the cover art and had a good scan so i made up this one. The rear text is as the original cart and cd text and it makes 'interesting' reading.Damn us Humans and the civilization of our development  ;)

I suppose it is as SNK wrote it on the original back.... Many of the manuals and backs read pretty strange from the days of the Neo Geo....

There is one of my own in there...i must have got caught up in the SNK vibe  ;). Its fixed now anyway. Neo CD's are odd in that some of them are nicely translated and others like Last Resort have a touch of the 'online translator' about them. I did think about putting it all right but decided that it adds to the character this way
