Title: Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast Instruction Manual Scans (+32X & SMS)
Post by: TSOLfan on July 26, 2011, 09:04:05 PM
As discussed in this thread (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=6146.0), my goal is to get through all of my Sega Saturn titles and produce full instruction scans.  To try to avoid a large chunk of sports games, I'll be pulling one from each end of the alphabet and upload two at a time.  I'm scanning directly to USB, and then using IrfanView to batch rename, rotate and crop from lower left at 2800x2360.  Unfortunately, I'm not a scanning machine, so these will pop up as life permits.

I noticed others are using MediaFire, and the sharing interface looks nice, and it "says" unlimited storage, so we'll see how long these last.  I'm also zipping up all of the individual scans into a single zip file per game.  To see the zip, just click the "File Manager" button in the upper right (as the zip files don't show up in the Images view).

Concerning Shining Force III, my manual has water damage, so that's going to be a massive scan failure.  If anyone would like to donate a replacement Shining Force III manual, I'll gladly accept it and subsequently scan it :)

I also kicked off my Sega Dreamcast scan project, and to keep with the theme of the starting day's events, I began with all "horror" themed games (survival horror, zombies, vampires, and all that good stuff :)

If you scroll down even further, you'll notice a few Sega CD scans as well that I prioritized :D

Without further ado, here's the list.  I'll be linking each game's title as I complete the scans.

http://www.ratigators.com/ (http://www.ratigators.com/)

That page will be updated concerning what I'm still missing in regards to complete sets.

wow! excellent work my friend. I hope that you scan everything in your list.

I will be downloading everything that you upload so I can help you with storage if you want. I collect digital art of video games. This will be a great acquisition for my collection. I wish there to be someone like you for every system. You're awesome! alot of people have raw scans but do not share. it sux. many raw scans  are no longer available for other artists to clean. But your contributions are much appreciated! as previously stated, I will help you keep them online as I will download everything that you offer. let me know. I hate to offer opionions because some people get upset, but perhaps one large zip file will be better? mediafire is popup hell when downloading one-at-a-time. either way, I will help.

a Googol Thanks!

I'll add a new post each time I update this thread with the list of games that have been newly added.  Today's adds are the following:

A.M.O.K.
WWF Wrestlemenia: The Arcade Game

I hate to offer opionions because some people get upset, but perhaps one large zip file will be better? mediafire is popup hell when downloading one-at-a-time.

I don't get upset, though, I will defend my opinion until it no longer makes sense to do so :)

I noticed a link in MediaFire to download an entire gallery.  I haven't tried it, but I would think that would do exactly what you are wanting.

Speaking of MediaFire, am I the only one that sees "servers offline" or "file not available" on some of the JPG previews?  The files seem to be downloading just fine (as there are download counts), so perhaps it's not worth worrying about.  I'm not loyal to MediaFire or anything, I'm just using it because I noticed others here have used it, and it "says" unlimited storage, and thus far, these scans seem to be coming in around 20-40MB per game, so taking an average of 30MB across 247 games, it will be adding up to about 7.5GB at this rate.

No, you're not aloner.
It has been doing that for quite awhile now.

But it seems it mainly affects previews (occasionally whole file gets corrupted, but that has happened only twice to me) So not a biggie. And usually re-uploading helps.

The next two are up:

Albert Odyssey: The Legend of Eldean
WWF In Your House

For some reason, Albert Odyssey is suffering from the dreaded MediaFire "server offline/file not found" on the first scan, which is the cover.  It downloads fine, though.  I took Arseen's advice and deleted it, and re-uploaded it, and still broken preview.  So, I deleted it, renamed my local file, uploaded it, and still no preview.  Though, I noticed some images that had broken previews previously have magically fixed themselves.  Oh well.

Also, I went back and corrected the scans of the last pages to "unfold" the warranty registration card for the games that had one as to not block the last page of text, so if you already downloaded any of those last pages that had one, you might want to re-download.

I noticed a link in MediaFire to download an entire gallery.  I haven't tried it, but I would think that would do exactly what you are wanting.

Yea, as I said, I didn't actually try it :)  If that becomes a huge pain for people, I'll look into adding a zip file of all of the images for an individual game if someone else hasn't already done so.

Mind if I request Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2 next? :)

What?  And ruin my pattern? :D  Not that I really care, but I'd rather not get into the whole request thing, else I'm pulling games from all over the place trying to fill that "one" request that is the only one someone else needs, and I find it easier just to go alphabetical and reverse alphabetical order.  I figure the overall goal of a complete collection scan is more important and if people have gone this long without a manual scan, they can wait a couple of weeks/months for theirs to be up :)  But, I'm a reasonable person, and yeah, I understand that the Panzer Dragoon games are probably the only ones that most people even care about, so I'll see if I can make an exception this "one" time :P

In other news, I did find my original large box that the Netlink Sega Rally and Virtual On were sold in, so I'll be able to scan their dedicated Netlink Supplement manuals (as opposed to the single piece of paper with artwork on one side that was in the jewel cases the games were actually in).

Though, Shining Force III is still water damaged (most pages are stuck together), so that will still be missing, unless someone on eBay decides to offer up just the manual for sale because I'm not a huge fan of paying eBay prices for another copy of a game I've long since completed just for a new manual.  Same goes for the legendary back insert for Saturn Bomberman I'm also missing.  If anyone wants to donate either of those, I can offer up a mailing address and be forever thankful :D

I've gone ahead and put all of the images for each game into their own separate zip file and put each one each shared folder.

To see the zip, just click the "File Manager" button in the upper right (as the zip files don't show up in the Images view).  I've also updated the original post to mention this.

I do not mind zipping the files then uploading. I'm saving the manuals anyway so why not. I didn't want to double your work so I thought that I would add a zip for people like me that want bulk options. Individual images has its benfits but I need all of the scans so I then prefer to dl a zip file of the scans. Thank you for offering zip files and Thank You for sharing your manuals. If ever you need help then let me know. Otherwise, Have a pleasant day/night.

Two more manuals posted, consider this the "BadChad" edition :)

Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei

And now I'll return to my previous schedule of alphabetical and reverse alphabetical order.

As mentioned earlier, if you click the "File Manager" button in the upper right, you can download a single zip file.

Yet another update (with additional notes):

All-Star Baseball
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Worldwide Soccer '98

I went ahead and finished off the Panzer Dragoon's.  Though, a note on the scans for Saga.  It was one of the last Sega Saturn releases, where they switched from heavy card stock for the manuals to a really thin and flimsy paper.  My manual had an odd placement of the top staple, and combining those two factors (thin paper, bad staple job), once you get past the middle of the manual, you'll notice an odd fold to the pages.  This is the best I could do, short of removing staples and/or ripping pages/creating creases in pages.  Since this is the "Raw Scans" forum, perhaps someone pulling these down for personal use can straighten them out.  I never really noticed it when reading the manual, but, this is the first time I ever tried to fold it flat on each page.

Already to the third separate series of baseball games:

Arcade's Greatest Hits: Atari
World Series Baseball '98

There were actually 9 baseball games for Sega Saturn in the US (assuming I'm counting them correctly), more than any other sport.

Today's update:

Arcade's Greatest Hits: Williams
World Series Baseball II

As for Williams, it was nice to have a short manual for a change, as opposed to 30-40+ page sports games' manuals.

Hi!  We should be working together.  I started a Saturn manual project over at UG a couple of years ago.  I did a whole lot of scanning while finishing up the Darkwater Saturn torrent.  I now have 600 dpi raw png or 300dpi cleaned scans for all *EXCEPT* the following U.S. titles:
Astal
Baku Baku
Batman Forever: The Arcade Game
BattleSport
Blast Chamber
Blazing Heroes
Clockwork Knight 2
Contra: Legacy of War
Corpse Killer
Crypt Killer
Daytona USA CCE   Netlink
Deep Fear
Die Hard Arcade
Doom
Dragon Force
Earthworm Jim 2
Galaxy Fight
Golden Axe: The Duel
Herc's Adventures
High Velocity:  Mountain Racing Challenge
House of the Dead, The
Iron Storm
Lunacy Adventure
Marvel Super Heroes
MegaMan 8: Anniversary Collector's Edition
Megaman X4
Mortal Kombat II
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Olympic Soccer
P.T.O. II: Pacific Theater of Operations II
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Primal Rage
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire
Sega Ages Vol.1
Shining Wisdom
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha – Warriors' Dreams
Street Fighter Collection
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Virtua Racing (Time Warner Interactive's VR)
Warcraft II: The Dark Saga
Winning Post
Worldwide Soccer '98
WWF In Your House

I've been working on cleaning up manual covers and backs, with the thought of putting together a Saturn extras torrent in the not too distant future.  The Saturn directories you would be interested in are about 40GB now.  Cleaning the manuals is not my priority at the moment, but I would be glad to share the work with you if you want to make it a project.  Do you know of a suitable server where we could exchange data?

I've also got a similar thing going for Sega CD USA that is about 60% complete.  Sega Game Gear is about 25% complete.

Hi!  We should be working together.  I started a Saturn manual project over at UG a couple of years ago.  I did a whole lot of scanning while finishing up the Darkwater Saturn torrent.  I now have 600 dpi raw png or 300dpi cleaned scans for all *EXCEPT* the following U.S. titles:

That's fantastic news on two fronts.  I've been scanning because I couldn't find anyone else that had.  Secondly, I have all of your requested titles except for Daytona Netlink, which I don't see myself ever owning (I'm not paying $500+ for a mode I'll never use).

As for a server to transfer the data, initially I would think MediaFire, since it's unlimited, though, you'd have to upload everything (which I know would be a pain).  I'd be more than happy to mail you a spindle of DVD+R DL (which it would take about 5 of) with return postage paid, but the biggest problem for me (which sounds like yours as well) would be time.  I just don't see myself having the time to clean anything up, but I do manage to find some time each day to make a few scans.

So, I say we see where this thread goes as far as any other volunteers for "scan cleanup".  I can continue working through my list as time permits, as it actually might not be a bad idea to have some extra copies if there's any damage on either side (your manuals or mine).

Also, you mention Sega CD as well.  If you need manual fills, I can also provide for that.  Same goes for Dreamcast, as I have a complete collection for that too.

Also, I'm heading out on vacation here for a week, so it will be all quiet from me for a while.  Though, to have fun with things, I did manage to get a bunch of extras scanned in (instead of just 2 today), enough for each day I'll be gone.

I posted a script at my personal site to release 1 from each end of the alphabet each day automatically (which will also be nice so I don't have the SPAM the forum with each update).

http://www.ratigators.com/ (http://www.ratigators.com/)

I tested it by modifying some dates to see if things showed up, so it "should" work just fine until I get back :)

As I mentioned, see you guys in a week, and enjoy the auto-released scans :D

Best Regards,

TSOLfan

I'm back on the grid.  I did notice that in my Baku Baku scans, I had the corner of one page folded, so I re-scanned and re-uploaded that page and zip.

Again, rather than post here every day when I link the next two uploaded scans, my script at ratigators.com (http://ratigators.com) is running on cruise control, so you can just check there each day to download that day's release.

Though, I will post here any notes about the manuals or scans that I come across, and also, feel free to let me now if I missed a page or something like that (as I'm burning through these pretty quick, and sometimes MediaFire fails on a file upload and I may not have noticed).

Speaking of notes, my True Pinball manual has some damage on the back cover at the very bottom where the copyright text is (very minor), and my Steep Slope Sliders manual looks to have gotten wet in the upper right hand corner causing some slight damage to the inner artwork.  I put both of those in my eBay Saved Search queue, so when I come across a good price for a replacement, I'll pick them up, and assuming that happens post-scheduled release, I'll come back around and re-scan and re-upload.

I also have a few games still sealed (when purchasing lots, I opted to keep the sealed copies if I came across any because more than likely, I had already played the game).  Nothing incredibly rare, so I'll also be picking up spares of those to scan in (and flipping my sealed copies to cover the cost).

Today's scan from the lower half of the alphabet is the original Virtua Fighter, which never had a long box release in the US, which means, no full size manual like all of the rest.  It was actually in a jewel case with a fold out poster instead of a manual.  I did my best to scan this, and ended up with about 10 scans (5 per side) that I merged into just 2 files (front and back).  There are still fold lines, but granted, this thing has stayed folded for most of the past 16 years.

If someone "really" wanted to print up a US long box for it, I'd suggest going with my Virtua Fighter Remix scans from a few days ago (which is from the long box release) and swapping out the cover art and perhaps the art (and screenshots) on the inside, perhaps with art pulled from the European (which was full size) or Japanese (which was jewel case) release.  I have the Japanese release I could scan, though, not the European release.

I assume they would fit on a MediaFire account?

Also, with Sega announcing the release date for Guardian Heroes on Xbox Live yesterday (October 12th, and up to 12 players, twice as many as the Saturn release allowed), I uploaded and linked the Guardian Heroes manual ahead of schedule so people can prepare.

i heard radiant silvergun is released the day after that too.

Might have to unpack my 360, but it's on an old dash and I was hoping to JTag it.    Hmmm - still might be cheaper to buy a new 360, and get Radiant Silvergun, that it is to buy the game for Saturn.

Yesterday's scan of Street Fighter Alpha 2 was one of only three Sega Saturn manuals released in full color (excluding the Working Designs games, which always had full color manuals).  Tomorrow will see another one of the three.

Any guesses on the third (again, excluding the Working Designs games)? :)

Also, I've finished going through and auditing all of my manuals, and here are the ones with "issues":

Heir of Zendor
Iron Man/X-O Man-O-War: Heavy Metal
NFL Quarterback Club '96
Olympic Soccer
Pandemonium
Shining Force III
Steep Slope Sliders

Heir of Zendor, NFL Quarterback Club '96 and Olympic Soccer are still sealed, so those will be skipped until I source a reasonably priced replacement as I've already done with the other games that I had that were still sealed (for those that are curious, they were Last Gladiators: Digital Pinball, NHL All-Star Hockey and VR Soccer, nothing crazy rare or anything).

Iron Man/X-O Man-O-War: Heavy Metal and Pandemonium both have level codes written in the back in ink, and the individual that owned Pandemonium prior to me at least made the codes into a lovely border on the back of the manual (one of the few manuals without a "Notes" page, and apparently it needed it :))  These are being scanned "as is", and I'll replace the scans when I again source reasonably priced replacements.

Shining Force III and Steep Slope Sliders both have water damage.  Steep Slope Sliders, you can only tell in the upper corner of a few pages where artwork has been damaged separating the pages.  It's been scanned "as is" and will eventually also be replaced.  Shining Force III is as good as garbage, almost as if the entire thing is glued together.  I bought a replacement off of eBay a few years ago, though, of course, the seller didn't ship it with the manual, said they would try to find it, and of course never sent it.  Since I had long since beat the game, it was off my radar.  Though, for now, it as well will be skipped until I source a reasonably priced replacement (hopeful I can come across an auction with just the manual, as I don't need another game/case/back insert).

One last note, Lunacy (an Atlus RPG) and Madden '97 both included large foldouts (Lunacy had a map, Madden '97 had an entire poster playbook).  I hadn't originally planned on scanning these, but I'll add them to the pile if there's interest.

Up to day 50, which means 100 game manuals scanned and linked, plus the 4 I did out of order, Guardian Heroes and the Panzer Dragoons.  Speaking of the Panzer Dragoons, I went through and re-scanned Panzer Dragoon Saga to stretch the manual as much as I could without ripping the pages, and I'm much happier with the scans.  These have been re-linked.

I also noticed that Crime Wave was incorrectly pulling up the scans for Creature Shock (I guess no one bothered to even click on that one to notice), and that's been fixed.

If there are any other questions/comments, let me know in this thread.  Other than that, continued radio silence on my end and the daily linking, unless there's something else I feel like noting, and if so, I'll again leave comments over here.

I just want to go ahead and prepare people for any possible disappointment.  Sunday is when I "should" be linking Shining Force III, though, I still haven't sourced a replacement copy.  Once I do, I'll get it scanned in and linked.

You can still enjoy the full color manual for Shining Wisdom today, and the one for Dragon Force tomorrow.

My replacement Shining Force III and Iron Man manuals came in over the weekend, as did my replacement for my sealed copy of Heir of Zendor.  I've updated ratigators.com (http://ratigators.com) with the link to the Shining Force III scans, and I'll get the others in the queue.

That just leaves two more sealed games awaiting replacement, one with ink marks, and one with minor art damage, that all will also eventually get replaced.  I've also started picking up replacements for my sealed Sega Dreamcast games in preparation for that scan project.

Also, not that anyone has asked (though, I was curious myself), counting what's been done and what's left, the grand total is going to be right at or around 3250 scans for Sega Saturn.  I'm hoping my scanner survives the rest of the systems I'll be working my way through.

According to Satakore, there was never a EUR release:

http://www.satakore.com/sega-saturn-game,,T-7601H,,Romance-of-the-Three-Kingdoms-IV-Wall-of-Fire-USA.html

Under "Alt" versions, it lists 3 JAP releases (standard and a few best of), 2 CHI releases and one KOR release.

Perhaps the reason for the lack of the EUR release was due to issues printing the manual :)

Wow, I thought the Dragon Force Manual was thick but I can't imagine this game then.  Does it even fit under those clips in the longbox without bulging like crazy?

They probably had to use a lower-weight paper.  Dragonforce manual was printed on heavier paper IIRC.

Well, Sega Saturn game cases are huge, and there's probably at least 1/4" space between the clips for a manual to fit in, so there's no real problem, unlike trying to cram a 46 page manual in a standard CD jewel case (I'm looking at you, Worms Armageddon for Sega Dreamcast).  That's why the original foam inserts are so important, not only to keep a disc from coming loose, but to also keep the manuals from sagging in the case.

They probably had to use a lower-weight paper.  Dragonforce manual was printed on heavier paper IIRC.

Exactly right.  Even though the Dragon Force manual is fewer pages, the Working Designs manuals were always printed on much heavier stock paper, so at the end of the day, the Dragon Force and Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV manual are just about the same thickness.

Just picked up a replacement Steep Slope Sliders, so once it comes in, I'll replace that manual scan.  Still haven't picked up an unsealed copy of Olympic Soccer, so I'll miss my schedule on that one, but once I do, I'll come back around just like I did with Shining Force III.

I also haven't replaced Pandemonium yet either, so on Monday, you'll get to see how someone got creative in writing down level codes :)

One last thing, I've got everything setup for Halloween, so come Monday, I'll have to see if I can rename the thread ;)

Happy Halloween guys/girls!

Today, I'm kicking off my Dreamcast scan project.  To keep with the theme of the day, I started with all "horror" themed games (survival horror, zombies, vampires, and all that good stuff :)).  Tomorrow will resume the regularly scheduled program with one from each end of the alphabet.

Also, if you scroll down even further, you'll notice a few choice Sega CD scans as well that I prioritized :D

No Olympic Soccer scans today, my only copy is still sealed.  I'll get the manual scanned in once a replacement arrives.  Though, enjoy In the Hunt, and the two Dreamcast games of the day.

This is, by far, one of the most helpful threads on the entire site.  I am very, very thankful to you for doing all of this work for us!  My Saturn collection is pretty small (currently at 8 games) but thanks to you, I have manuals for all of them, to go with the custom cases I've printed.  When I get some of them printed out and stapled together, I'll post some pics for the rest of the community.  Looks like it's time to stock up on ink again ^_^

No Olympic Soccer scans today, my only copy is still sealed.  I'll get the manual scanned in once a replacement arrives.  Though, enjoy In the Hunt, and the two Dreamcast games of the day.

My spare copy of Olympic Soccer arrived earlier this week, and I was able to get it scanned in and uploaded here this morning (which is one of the many Saturn games to advertise an unreleased game on the back of the manual), so that fills the only gap in my Sega Saturn project (other than the Daytona USA Netlink Supplement manual, though, both the Sega Rally and Virtual On Netlink Supplement manuals are both already scanned and uploaded).

I also scanned in my replacement for Steep Slope Sliders, so if you had downloaded the previous scans (which included some artwork damage on a few pages), you can trash those and download these new ones.

The only other scan in my list pending replacement is Pandemonium (due to the level codes written in the manual), so if you've noticed an error or a missing page from another game, please let me know, because I'm not aware of it.

I'm glad I could share.  As I mentioned in my "Game Room(s)" thread, the purpose of my collections are to share.  Family and friends all borrow games, though, they leave the house with discs in spare jewel cases (easier to find spare discs than complete cases with all of the inserts), so I thought this would be a great way to share all of the manuals, locally and globally.  As I mentioned in my first post, these are all RAW scans, cropped identical to one another, so if a manual was slightly smaller (I went with the largest size when cropping), and you planned on printing, you may have to do some minor amount of "clean up" work.  I'd love to see some "after" pics if you get a chance to post them.

Oops, i spoke too soon - I still need to wait a few more days for the Marvel Super Heroes scan to come up, *then* I'll have a complete set of manual scans.  How exciting!

I'm a reasonable person, and given the fact that you are one of the few to actually mention that you'll be using the scans for an actual replacement (like BadChad and his Panzer Dragoon titles), I've gone ahead and uploaded and linked Marvel Super Heroes a few days early.

Oh, that is great news - thank you for uploading it early!  I'm on my way there to download it now!

Hopefully, I'll be able to get a photo or two of the printed copies posted here in a week or so.  My printer cartridge is about out at the moment, so I'll probably order a few more today and get to work once they come in.  I gotta say, since joining this community, I've lost a lot of hours in Photoshop (okay, okay, Paint.NET...) working on covers and cropping images to fit.  That being said, I've gotten pretty handy at it, and I'm more than up to the challenge of editing down the Saturn manuals to a more DVD-case-friendly size.  Like I said before, my collection is pretty small, so it shouldn't take me too long to get it all done.

Again, TSOLfan, thank you for doing all of this work!  This entire site is such a help, in regards to bringing together an old game collection and making it look like new.  The completed Saturn DVD-sized cases, with matching manuals, will likely be the most impressive spread in my entire collection!  I'll be checking this thread every couple of days, and will keep you posted as the printed manuals come along.

Cheers!

Have fun today opening up the Mystaria: The Realms of Lore manual and the Blazing Heroes manual in two separate tabs and flipping back and forth :)

In other news, I finally got around to picking up a spare copy of Virtua Athlete 2000, so once it arrives, I'll get it scanned in and post the link.  That was the only Sega Dreamcast game I had left that was still sealed with no opened copy, so I won't have to skip any others.  Sega CD, I have quite a few still sealed games, so I may delay my start date on those to give me some more time to pick up some spares, but I haven't decided yet.

I also added one more Sega Dreamcast game to the list, the non-Limited Edition of Shenmue.  I always thought the manuals were identical, but flipping through them, they mostly are, though, the Limited Edition manual has a few extra pages at the end.

Lastly, 4 more days and I'll be done with Sega Saturn games in their entirety.

I know I've said it before, but I really can't stress enough just how valuable of an archive all of these manual scans are.  I keep checking back on this thread for updates, and I'm glad it's still moving along!

Speaking of moving along, I'm finally ready to get started re-printing some manuals of my own!  I'm thinking I'll start with the manual for D, because it's pretty short compared to some of the others.  If I get it done today (which I plan to) I'll post some pictures of it, along with the DVD case that it will be stored in.  If all goes well, I think Street Fighter Alpha 2 will be next - full color, baby!

Again, thanks TSOLfan.  While my girlfriend may not be too happy about it, you've given me a new project to pass my free time.  I, for one, am stoked :-D

3248 scans and 4GB+ later (8GB+ if you count the zip files), my Sega Saturn Instruction Manual Scan project is complete.

It seems Sega Saturn developers loved printing manuals with solid black pages with white text, so hopefully you have a lot of black ink :)

Thanks to ThugsRook over at the Sega 16 forums for this link:

These aren't my scans, but, for anyone that needs Sega CD manuals, this looks like a great resource.  It's missing Starblade, so I'll be sure to get that one scanned in first.  I'll still end up scanning my Sega CD manuals so I have them in the same format as all of my others (for easy browsing on my tablet), as well as for anyone that wants raw JPG scans (as those are all already compressed PDFs).

I went ahead and scanned in and uploaded Starblade for Sega CD along with my other Sega Dreamcast scans for today since it was the only game missing from the Sega CD PDF archive that I linked to earlier, that way anyone just collecting the PDF manuals can quickly complete their collection.

Well, I got the manual for D all printed off and stapled together, but I can't get my images to load up!  Anyone have any pointers?

What I've always done is upload my image somewhere (such as Flickr, Dropbox, etc) and then copied a link to the image and then clicked the image icon (middle row, second from the left) and then pasted the link between the img tags that the button creates.

All right, let's see if I got this figured out!

http://s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g374/games-go-round/ (http://s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g374/games-go-round/)

There should be 4 shots total.  I had compressed the heck out of them originally, so I may go back and take newer, full-res shots if these don't come out well.  The manual stapled together very well, and the paper I used (taken from an old sketch pad that I trimmed to fit in the printer  ;) ) is easy to handle and grip.  The first time I printed a manual, I used higher-quality matte photo paper, and while the colors were great, the paper didn;t have much texture, and I found it hard to hold onto the manual!

I didn't print the inner pages at the highest setting, so you may notice some vertical lines from the printing.  I didn't want to over-saturate the paper and cause the front of the page to bleed into the back.  The end result is a manual that is accurate, easy to read, and easy to hold.  I *could* have done a better, higher-quality job, but I'm still happy with the result!

More to come soon!  I hope others are working one these, too - I'd love to see 'em!

My spare copy of Virtua Athlete 2000 finally arrived, so I've got that linked up where I had previously skipped it.

MediaFire seems to be acting up at the moment, so you won't see the image previews, but the zip should still download just fine.

More to come soon!  I hope others are working one these, too - I'd love to see 'em!

I think this looks fantastic!  I'm glad someone is finding a use for these!

Is there any chance you could add front and back inlays to the scan folders for the Dreamcast games? A lot of the games you've scanned the manuals for don't have decent quality back inserts or inlays available of the original covers and it would be a great help.  ;D

It's pretty easy to slide out a manual, though, I always loathe cracking open cases to pull out the tray inserts, especially 247 times.

With that said, I'd like to think between these two threads, I've scanned the front and back of the inlays that people have needed:

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=5845.0
http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=4680.0

So, I'd rather handle these on a case-by-case basis (pun not intended).

Then again, I may change my tune in a few months, as I've been scanning manuals non-stop since July in my mornings before work, fortunately, with just a few months left to wrap everything up.  Once I get some distance from that (MediaFire tells me I've uploaded 7100+ individual scans thus far), I may feel up to the task, because, I mean, what's another 440 :) (247 inserts times 2 for front and back scans minus the 27 games in my main scan thread I've already done times 2 for front and back :))

Seems MediaFire is having some issues at the moment, in that, clicking my links show no files.  I noticed this same issue yesterday morning, though, by the time I checked again in the evening, everything was working again.  I checked a few other MediaFire links (other than my own), and they all seem to have the same issue, so thankfully, it's not just me.

They scans are all there for today's uploads, though, up to MediaFire as to when they'll work.

Tomorrow I'll be kicking off my Sega CD scans, so everyone can start the new year with 3 Ninjas Kick Back :)

Even though there are about 100 less games for the Sega CD than the Sega Saturn or Sega Dreamcast, the number of games having 40+ page manuals is much higher (as well as quite a few 60+ and a 70+), which means, unfortunately, it will probably take me about the same time to scan them all in.

I'm glad I can share my collection and be a source.  I'm not one for advertising much, but hopefully someone looking for a manual for their loose copy of a Sega CD, Sega Saturn or Sega Dreamcast game will stumble upon the site and be able to check out the manual.  If anyone feels like sharing this thread with any gaming sites they frequent, feel free.  Perhaps it will lead to more scans from others noticing the site for the first time :)  I'd like to see someone try and tackle manual scans for Sega Master System, or NES, or even SNES or Genesis.  I know those last two have quite a few releases, from my quick research, less than 800 each when looking at US releases alone.  Those numbers can sound intimidating, but, once I finish all of my Sega manuals, that will put me around 650 manuals scanned, so it's definitely do-able, be it one person or a team.  Though, with one person, you do get a level of consistency in how all manuals would look, which I think goes a long way.

A quick note on my SegaCD scans.  Looking over the scans at SegaFans (that I linked to earlier), some are a bit rough (like their version of Wonderdog, which I uploaded to ratigators.com here this morning).  So, I'll keep sharing my SegaCD scans as an alternate source.  Plus, I went ahead and scanned in the "red" version of Wonderdog, as they had the "green" version.

I may come back around after the fact and fill in a few alt manuals, such as the "green" Wonderdog, the matte (not foil) Lunar, and the small Ecco, Sonic, and Sewer Shark manuals (from when they became pack in games), and the blue box version of Night Trap (this is the version that SegaFans has).  Also, my scan for Rise of the Dragon will be the blue longbox re-release version (same as SegaFans).  I have the original cardboard box release, though, it's still sealed.  If I pick up an alt copy, I'll scan that in as well.

A minor annoyance with the SegaCD scans is that there are quite a few manual sizes, so I can't as easily run a batch.  There's the original size manuals for the cardboard box released games (such as Wonderdog).  Then there is the larger size from the jewel case releases, some which are even slightly wider than others (such as Eternal Champions and Wing Commander, 2 of the larger manuals).  Then, the later box releases of the Digital Picture games (such as Corpse Killer) have even larger manuals.  Then you have the manuals for the pack in games, such as Sol Feace and the original Sherlock Holmes that are their own custom size (not even a standard CD case size like the Dreamcast manuals).  Finally, you have a one off like Colors of Modern Rock that is much smaller than anything else, much smaller than Dreamcast sized manuals.

One of today's Dreamcast manuals is Grandia II, which is not only the longest US Dreamcast game manual, but it's also full color (color manuals are more frequent in Dreamcast releases than Saturn, but still by no means common).

The Shenmue: Limited Edition for Dreamcast is one of the scans today.  The only difference between the manual for the Limited Edition and the Standard Edition (which will get uploaded tomorrow) is that the Limited Edition has 4 extra pages in the back dedicated to the Jukebox disc (that was included in the Limited Edition).

One of today's Dreamcast scans, Iron Aces, has quite a bit of a wrinkle throughout the entire manual.  It's in my queue to eventually pick up a replacement (just hasn't been a priority), and once I do, I'll replace the scans.
Title: Re: Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast Instruction Manual Scans
Post by: TSOLfan on February 07, 2012, 08:15:53 AM
I received my replacement copy of Iron Aces, so I replaced my previous scans with a set of new ones (that don't have the odd wave effect).  My copy of 4 Wheel Thunder also seemed to have some noticeable wavy pages, so I've added it to the list to eventually replace.

Also, as per this post:

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=1525.msg70044#msg70044 (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=1525.msg70044#msg70044)

I added a few requested back insert scans to their respective folders.  If there's enough interest, and I feel up to snapping apart about 700 cases, I may come back around and do these (in addition to the previously requested Sega Dreamcast tray scans).

There are no scans today for ESPN NBA Hangtime '95 until I pick up a replacement copy.  Though, my extra copy of 4 Wheel Thunder did come in, so I replaced the existing scans that had a slight wrinkle to some of the pages.  These weren't anywhere near as noticeable as Iron Aces, but I thought it was worth updating.

If you are referring to Sega/Mega CD version I own CIB copy.
I'll scan it when I have time.
I assume 600DPI is OK, but do you want native scans or derasterized scans?

Thanks for the offer, though, I say hold off.  The SegaFans site I linked to earlier in the thread already had PDFs of all of the Sega CD games except for Star Blade (which I started with just for that reason), so there are already scans out there for ESPN NBA Hangtime 95, though, just not from me.  I'll eventually track one down for a price that I'm willing to pay.  I posted to SegaAge (a Sega collectors forum) to see if there were any copies floating out there someone wanted to part with for a price or trade for (as I have some sealed Sega CD, Saturn and Dreamcast titles I'd be willing to part with and some collectors like to try and build a totally sealed collection).

The only reason I'm scanning in my Sega CD titles is so I have my own copies (I throw them all on a cheap tablet for easy access), some of their scans were in bad shape, and to offer a level of consistency since all of my manual scans are done in the same fashion (and theirs seem to be user contributed, so there was no consistency in how they were produced).  It's the same reason why I scanned in Saturn and Dreamcast games that might have already been posted elsewhere (such as ReplacementDocs), for no other reason to offer anyone interested in a "full set" of scans (including myself) consistency that they were all scanned in an identical fashion (for better or worse).

You're welcome.  Hopefully, people looking for manual scans can actually find the site.  So, you know, tell everyone you know :)

Also, a quick update.  I skipped the Sega CD game Kris Kross: Make My Video, as my only copy of that is still sealed.  For this project, I've been picking up extra copies of games that I have that are still sealed, and this is one I've had yet to pick up in time for the schedule I had set.  Other than that, my only other Sega CD game that was sealed with no alternate copy was Masked Rider: Kamen Rider ZO.  My alt copy for that came in the mail yesterday, so, at least that one, I won't have to skip over.

Also, is anyone interested in Sega Master System or Sega 32X manual scans?  I started with Sega CD, Saturn and Dreamcast because that was the request in this thread:

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=6146.0 (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=6146.0)

I don't have a complete US collection for either of those systems (89/114 for SMS and 20/36 for 32X, and no, I don't have Spiderman for 32X, though, I do for SMS :)  Though, doing manual scans might just be what I need to finally get around to picking up the last few games I don't have for each of them.

Today mostly wraps up my Sega CD scan project with an additional 1952 scans (8946 total when you add in Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast).  I say "mostly" because I skipped 2 titles.  I have a backup copy of Kris Kross: Make My Video on its way (the last game I had where my only copy was still sealed), so that will get scanned in as soon as it arrives, and I'll scan in ESPN NBA Hangtime '95 as soon as I pick one up.

Also, tomorrow I'm starting my Sega CD 32X scan project, though, this one will go quick, since there were only 5 games.

When those wrap up in a couple of days, that should take care of anyone looking for any manual for any US Sega console game on an optical disc format.

After that, I'll be taking a break from scanning for a few months, but then I'll be back (hint, scroll to the bottom :)

As I mentioned, Sega CD 32X was going to go quick, and today wraps up the entire collection, adding 57 new scans.  Also, Kris Kross Make My Video came in the mail, so that has been scanned in and linked up in the Sega CD section (8 new scans).

Also, here's a preview of one of the things I'm working on next (after I return from a break in scanning for a while):

A minor update.  I finally got around to replacing my copy of Pandemonium for Sega Saturn that had level codes written on the back of the manual (had a saved search waiting for a super low price since all I needed was a manual).  I've scanned in the cover to replace what I had previously scanned.  So, if you were someone that downloaded it before, you might want to download it again.

Though, I'm still impressed with the creativity of the original owner (this was one of the games that actually didn't have a page dedicated to level codes in the manual):

That was the last Saturn manual I had in my list that was still awaiting a replacement.  Unless I happen across a Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition Netlink Edition, or someone points out an issue with any of my other Sega Saturn scans (missing page, etc), the Sega Saturn chapter is closed in my book.

Title: Re: Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast Instruction Manual Scans (+32X & SMS)
Post by: TSOLfan on May 25, 2012, 07:13:55 AM
In about a week, I'm scheduled to start on 32X cartridge manual scans (32X CD's are already done).  Though, just a heads up, I'm about 10 manuals short of a full set still at this point.  I still plan on starting on the date I randomly threw on a calendar, and I'll just skip the one I don't have and then back fill once I eventually pick them up.

Also, in regards to Sega Master System, I noticed the site was missing a vast majority of Sega Master System games (at least, the US versions).  So, when I'm going through pulling manuals, I'll also pull inserts and scan those.  Granted, these have been in cases for 25+ years, so there will be some spines that will never scan completely flat.  I went ahead and did one as an example:

http://www.ratigators.com (http://www.ratigators.com) (scroll down to the M's)

Also, same rule applies, my scanner is crazy sharp (picks up with original halftone print artifacts, in other words, looks identical to the original to my eyes).  As mentioned before, blur to your liking:

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=4680.msg43843#msg43843 (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=4680.msg43843#msg43843)

Lastly, on the Sega Master System insert scans, I'm doing those 300dpi scanned straight to USB, just like my manual scans.  That's as probably as far as I'll go.  I did a test print, and the printed insert looked nice to me.  The primary reason why I don't plan on going higher is because of things like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160793895253?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/160793895253?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)

There's still a huge Sega Master System collectors market, and there's a ton of games out there that are "loose" (no box), and I'm not a huge fan of people picking up a cheap game with a case, printing off an insert for a uncommon or rare game, and flipping it as a game "just missing a manual", or even just selling the inserts, such as this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/260902483701?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_798wt_801 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/260902483701?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_798wt_801)

That will still probably happen anyways, except I made a minor change to easily identify a duplicate.  Actually, not really, but the thought did cross my mind, but I decided against it (or did I :)

First 32X Cartridge manual scan is up for After Burner.  Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 will get uploaded once I pick up a copy.  Here's the full list of what I'm missing so there are no surprises:

Blackthorne
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
Primal Rage (I only have a loose cartridge)
Spiderman: Web of Fire
T-Mek
World Series Baseball '95
Zaxxon Motherbase 2000

Also, my WWF Raw manual had a rental sticker on the front that was removed and caused some damage, but I'll scan it in as is and eventually replace.

I've finished up all of the 32X games that I own.  I received a replacement copy of Primal Rage and posted that manual, and I have a copy of Blackthorne in the mail, and once that arrives, I'll get it scanned in.  Same deal with the last remaining few, once I pick up a copy, I'll get the manual scanned in and linked.

Also, not that anyone is asking for these, but I did one as a test.  Though, if I was to ever do them for real, I need a larger scanner as you can see :)

TSOLfan, glad this thread popped up I was actually looking for the person who's responsible for all these wonderful scans. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to scan all these manuals, it's really helped my Sega CD collection, and also the almost impossible to find Knuckles Chaotix manual, is a huge help! Keep up the great work, can't wait till you get to the Sega Master System and possibly scan Sonic 2 & Chaos, which aren't on your list but Sonic The Hedgehog is, in the future!

Sure, I've always wondered why no one has done this sooner, since I know I'm not the only one with a few complete sets sitting around.  Granted, there was a nearly complete set of Sega CD scans floating around for a while in PDF format, though, some were in pretty rough shape.  Also, no Sonic 2 or Chaos from me, as trying to complete a European set of Sega Master System isn't in my future.  I was going to say to try SMS Power or SMS Tributes sites, which are fantastic SMS resources, though, neither have the 2 you are looking for.

Scan in 2 parts?

And I have the ESPN NBA Sega CD manual if you want scans.

Well, that would just take twice as long :)  Then again, there's only 21 US Pico games (as opposed to the hundreds of Japanese Pico releases, even some by Nintendo).

And, yea, I know you've offered up your Hangtime in the past, but that totally ruins the fun of it all :)  Also, it's one of the titles for which there is a PDF scan floating around for, so if someone really wants it, it's out there already.

Now, if you were offering up a scan of the Daytona USA Netlink Supplement, that would be a different story :D

Unfortunately, no.  As for Japanese titles, I only have a sampling, mostly fighting games. I can't read/speak Japanese, though, one of my cousins does and would help if I was running up against a wall on something, so that, along with the fact that I do have space limitations, have kept me from collecting more.

Here's the list of NTSC-J titles I own:

Sega Saturn
Akumajou Dracula X: Gekka no Yasoukyoku
Christmas Nights
Daytona USA
Dead or Alive
Deep Fear
Dragon Ball Z Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu
Dragon Ball Z Shinbutouden
Dungeons & Dragons Collection
Fighters Megamix
Fighting Vipers
Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story 3 ~The Judgement
Panzer Dragoon
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
Pocket Fighter
Vampire Savior
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Fighter 2
Virtua Fighter Remix
X-Men Vs Street Fighter

Sega Dreamcast
Capcom Vs SNK 2 Millionaire Fighting 2001
Guilty Gear X
King of Fighters 1999 Dream Match, The
King of Fighters 1999 Evolution, The
King of Fighters 2000, The
King of Fighters 2001, The
King of Fighters 2002, The
Marvel Vs. Capcom
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Pack
Street Fighter Zero 3: Saikyō-ryū Dōjō

I had always intended to pick up Shadowrun for Sega CD, being a huge fan of the pencil and paper game years ago, even though it would be nigh impossible for me to even play it (due to the sheer amount of text).

I've got copies of ESPN NBA Hangtime '95 for Sega CD and T-Mek for Sega 32X in the mail, so once they arrive I'll get those scanned in and linked.

I'm still about 25 manuals short of a full US set for Sega Master System, though, still plan on starting here next month scanning and just as with the others, I'll go back and update what I skipped when I pick up copies.  Even though some are readily available in places such as eBay, I typically try to hold out for deals (such as with ESPN NBA Hangtime '95, which cost me $25).

Manual for ESPN NBA Hangtime '95 posted, so that officially wraps up Sega CD (1972 total scans), unless I decide to scan in the green Wonderdog, Night Trap re-release, matte version of Lunar and the micro versions of games like Ecco, Sonic CD and Sewer Shark from when they became pack-in games.

I should have a copy of Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 for 32X on the way here next week, which will leave just 3 pending 32X manuals.

Sega Master System will kick up in August, and along with the manuals, I'll be scanning the case inserts as well.

Tomorrow I'll be starting what I'm thinking will be my last manual scan project.  As mentioned previously, I don't yet have a complete NTSC-U set of Sega Master System titles, but probably more than enough to get started scanning manuals and inserts (95 out of 114).

** Removed and moved to 1st Post **

For the games listed above, I have eBay Saved Searches to watch for deals.  Damaged manuals and inserts I'm scanning in anyways and will eventually replace.  Some games aren't too hard to find, but I usually hold out for an auction with a decent starting price (like 99 cents) instead of Buy It Now style auctions, or I'd rather wait for a "manual only" auction on my "missing manual" games rather than buy another entire copy of a game.  I do/did have a few of the "missing games" already, though, loose carts or they have since gone missing (I had a package of a deal I got on Kung Fu Kid, Quartet and Rampage that the seller shipped to the wrong address originally that I'm starting to doubt will ever make its way to me).

If anyone has extras of anything I'm missing that you would be willing to part with, send me a private message and we'll see if we can make a deal.  Also, since I know more than just TCP members have my site bookmarked, when a game comes up in the schedule that I'm missing, I'll put a link to a quick contact form for any interested party that wants to part with a copy.

Lastly, I would possibly be interested in doing a scan project of Sega Genesis and Sega Game Gear manuals, though, my Genesis set was damaged in storage (only had about 50 games, primarily Sega published titles) and my Game Gear games are from my younger years, and I've no clue where they ended up (only had about 20 games, and haven't seen them or my Game Gear (or my Sega Nomad for that matter) since probably 1997).  Anyways, long story short, if people think there might be interest in donating manuals to a Genesis and/or Game Gear project, let me know.  Similar to this, but the link is currently down:

http://byuu.org/snes/preservation/

Though, Byuu never released any scans that I'm aware of.  He also wanted games, though, I'm not necessarily interested in having a full set of Genesis games (I do have to share this house with the wife and kids :)), plus I would think people might be more willing to donate spare manuals than entire games, and I'd cover shipping costs (letter rate would be pretty cheap, or even media mail if someone has a stash).  Or even, forego donations and have people just mail me their stack of manuals, and I'd cover shipping costs for return shipping once they've been scanned, and I'd have the list on the site of what's already on its way, and I'd post scans of games as soon as I finished them.

I think my site, ratigators.com speaks for itself in that I'm serious about scanning and not just hording stuff.

Would anyone be interested in anything like that or have any better ideas?

First set of scans are up (Action Fighter and Zillion II: The Tri Formation).  Also, to note, the Sega Master System had a ton of variants, primarily due to the fact in America it was released and marketed by Tonka (not Sega), and eventually, Sega took things over (so, some things were reprinted, and some things got stickers to cover up Tonka text).

A fantastic resource for all of the variants is here:

http://shinobiman.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=8587&page=1

And an also fantastic write up on what caused all of these variants (as well as why the last 4 USA releases were actually just EUR versions with new UPC stickers) is here:

I switched up all of my links to use the new MediaFire gallery format.  They previously defaulted to the old gallery format that they had since removed, which resulted in the links going straight to just a file list.

So, now they are back to a nice gallery view if someone wants to read a manual without ever downloading it.

Also, as noted on my site, if you could care less about viewing a manual online and just want to download it, just remove the "/view" from the URL.  The old gallery format had a "File Manager" button to get back to the file listing, though, the new one does not.

I've had some success (and failures) in crossing a few items off of my list, which I now moved to the first post in the thread and I'll keep updated there.

I picked up replacement manuals for the following games:

My Hero
Pro Wrestling

And picked up copies of the following games:

Aerial Assault
Bomber Raid
Golden Axe
Kung Fu Kid
Quartet
Slap Shot
Spider-Man

I lost auctions on replacement copies of Ghost House, The Ninja.

Nothing purchased has arrived just yet, so Bomber Raid will be skipped over tomorrow and updated once it shows up (as will Aerial Assault).

Though, I did get this in the mail the other day

Mortal Kombat (EUR)
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?fgki3hv8dqo22#

I only scanned the insert, and don't plan on scanning the manual.  It's one of the EUR games where the manual isn't stapled, it's glued because it's as thick as a book (because it contains sections for 8 different languages) and wouldn't scan well at all.

Lastly, I honestly didn't even notice my Blade Eagle 3-D insert was sun damaged until after I uploaded it today, so I'll add that to the list to replace.

With today's scans of Strider, it's the first of the set of the last 4 US titles that were simply repackaged EUR releases (as Sega was switching gears in the US and focusing on the Genesis).  Hence why the insert and manual are multilingual as well as the alternate manual layout (landscape).

Super Monaco GP came in the mail today, so I'll get this scanned in and linked (since I skipped it earlier).  I'll eventually do the same for the others.  It's not that the other games aren't easily obtainable, it's that I tend to wait for a reasonably priced auction to bid on (which from time to time I'll lose) rather than just picking them all up via Buy It Now listings on eBay.

Also, I have noticed that some inserts don't look as good out of the case as they did in the case, Ghostbusters for example, where, in the case behind the thick textured sleeve, it looked perfect, though, outside the sleeve it has some wrinkles.  I've been making notes along the way, and I'll probably eventually add some saved searches to pick up some alt copies to replace the scans, though, I'm in no huge rush.  If and when I do any replacements, as usual, I'll post in this thread.

In addition to today's two scheduled games to be posted, I also scanned in and uploaded Captain Silver and Dead Angle, both of which arrived over the weekend.

Also, with Miracle Warriors: Seal of the Dark Lord, I scanned in the map as 9 separate scans and assembled them all together into one large JPG.  Be sure to check it out, if for nothing more than the hilarious typo in the game's subtitle at the top of the map.

I also updated the original post with what I'm still missing, so if anyone has anything they'd like to donate or sell for a fair price, let me know.

Today wraps up my scheduled Sega Master System insert/manual scans.  There are still 6 games, 3 manuals and 2 replacement inserts that I still need to eventually pick up, and I'll post here in this thread when I make any updates.

As mentioned yesterday, I have 3 more games on the way that I'll get scanned and uploaded once they arrive.

For those wanting some more stats, so far I'm at 1,182 Sega Master Scans, so if you take away the insert scans and do the math, that's another 2,148 pages of manuals scanned.

As for MediaFire stats, they tell me I'm now hosting 11,348 Sega scans.  If you take away the zip files and once again do the math, that means I've scanned about 10,564 times, resulting in approximately 21,128 pages of manuals scanned.

I did post in a few places (CAG, DigitPress, SegaAge, etc, and including here earlier in this thread) about trying to do a more collaborative effort on Genesis and Game Gear, with manuals either being donated or with me covering cost of shipping and return shipping (to ensure a level of consistency with all scans), and I received no response.

So, other than scanning in any missing items I pick up or deciding to do back inserts across the board for Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast, this closes the book on my system level scan projects.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

As for creating a torrent, downloading an entire system wasn't really my goal. My intent was to offer up high quality scans for people to replace any manuals they are missing, so you can quickly click on a game to view online, or, remove the "view" from the URL to get access to the zip for that game.

Though, I do know that someone over at The Iso Zone downloaded and repackaged all of my Dreamcast manuals and posted torrents (found the link when I was browsing Google Analytics). I wouldn't be surprised if someone else is already working on the same for the other systems I've done.

Maxim, an admin over at SMS Power, is taking all of my scans and OCR'ing them to have plain text versions.  Thus far, he noticed two games where when I was flipping pages to scan, I flipped too many.  I've scanned in the missing pages and re-uploaded the individual scans and zips.  This affected Zillion and Zillion II: The Tri Formation.  Odd that it was two games in a row.

If anyone else notices any errors, please let me know, and I'll correct them.

Power Strike has been added (11 scans).  For those wondering why the cover isn't in color, in the US, it was a mail in offer (similar to Daytona USA: Netlink Edition for Sega Saturn).  The EUR release was a retail release and has full color art.

That leaves just 3 Master System games I'm missing (NTSC-U), Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, James 'Buster' Douglas Knockout Boxing and R.C. Grand Prix, all of which I'm just waiting on deals (had someone offer R.C. Grand Prix for $30, which I may take them up on).

R.C. Grand Prix has been uploaded and linked.

I still need a copy of Alex Kidd in Shinobi World and James 'Buster' Douglas Knockout Boxing, as well as replacement manuals for Alf, Fantasy Zone, and Teddy Boy, and a replacement insert for Ghost House (without the UPC cutout).  If anyone has extras of any of those and would be interested in donating or cutting me a deal, send me a PM.

I just received a bunch of these emails:

MediaFire Account Received Strike
The file (Sega Rally Championship 2 (USA) 01.jpg) violates the MediaFire Terms of Service. Due to it being distributed from your account, it has been removed. Also, a Strike has been placed against your account and can lead to a termination of service.

Here's what they've told me they've removed thus far (each was a separate email):

The file (Sherlock Holmes (USA) 01.jpg) violates the MediaFire Terms of Service. Due to it being distributed from your account, it has been removed. Also, a Strike has been placed against your account and can lead to a termination of service.

The file (Area 51 (USA) 01.jpg) violates the MediaFire Terms of Service. Due to it being distributed from your account, it has been removed. Also, a Strike has been placed against your account and can lead to a termination of service.

The file (House of the Dead 2, The (USA) 01.jpg) violates the MediaFire Terms of Service. Due to it being distributed from your account, it has been removed. Also, a Strike has been placed against your account and can lead to a termination of service.

So, 1 Sega CD game and 2 Sega Saturn games and 1 Sega Dreamcast game.  All of my 01 scans were the manual folded flat for the front/back cover.  From the ones I checked, the rest of the manual is still there.

I guess I need to start shopping for another possible host with a nice online gallery view (which I like, so people can view manuals online without having to download).

Got 4 additional strikes this morning, so 4 more games were removed by MediaFire.

Thus far, they won't even respond to my requests asking who is contacting them so I can even reach out to ask permission, which is frustrating.

Does anyone know of any decent (preferably free) gallery/book plugins or scripts that I could use to achieve a MediaFire-esque view (as I really like their interface).  I'm looking at just hosting these on my own server.

Something perhaps like:

http://www.rockscenester.com/

That site was my original inspiration for what my site became.

I recieved 4 of those few weeks ago too.

I removed mediafire links from my signature and haven't recieved any sinse.

Unfortunately, since I want people to find my website (if they are looking for a manual), having it in my signature helps with the search engine results (doing a search for sega manual scans, or something like sega saturn manuals, you'll more than likely find a thread I posted in on any number of relevant forums to help get the word out).

I did whip up a quick script of my own to return a list of JPGs in a folder and uses a JPG component installed on my server to generate a thumbnail realtime based upon a width request and stream it to the browser, never saving it to disk (to prevent a bunch of thumbnail images from floating around).

When I hit that page, CPU peaks at 7% on the server, so while a nice idea, not realistic.  My next idea was to use this same idea, but, actually have it generate the thumbnail into a local "cache" folder if one doesn't already exist.  If one does exist, simply use it.  That way, if I do upload a new scan, I can just empty the cache folder for that folder, and the system will regenerate the files on the next request.

It hit 8% CPU (due to some additional logic to check for a cache folder, if not there, create it, then check for a thumbnail with the requested width, if not there create it, then stream it), and subsequent runs don't even hit 1%.

So, now I just need to setup some FTP queues to run over the course of this week to move everything over, and then finish building a minimalistic UI I'm happy with (now that I've got a solution for my biggest problem, various thumbnail sizes).

It seems that your sig doesn't have direct Mediafire links like mine did, so it's not that.

I have my suspissions towards who it was but not sure...

I finished up all of my UI work yesterday (as mentioned, I'm going with a next to nothing UI, focusing on the scans), and I'm satisfied enough with it to launch it once I finish getting the rest of my RAW JPG files uploaded this week (works nicely from my laptop, phone and tablet), and then I'll be off MediaFire.

Once it launches, if anyone notices anything missing, let me know, as I probably coded something goofy (had to write some exceptions as my image resizing code didn't like file names with ampersands or commas) or failed to upload something.  Also, when doing some testing, I happen to click on Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, and apparently my manual scans for it were totally cropped wrong (as in, the top half of the manual was missing throughout) that no one seemed to notice before :)

I finished transferring all of my images over to the new server, and all of my UI work is done (I'm pretty happy with my JSON work).  Though, before I flip the switch, I'm going through and auditing Sega Saturn scans.  It was the system I started with, and I went in naively thinking that of course all manuals are the same dimensions, I mean, why wouldn't they be? :)

So, when applying my crop dimensions across the board, on some manuals, you lost 1/8" of artwork (3D Baseball), and some you gained 1/8" of black space (Andretti Racing).  It was really noticeable to me when I had everything uploaded and was checking to make sure everything pulled in correctly.

Honestly, I'm surprised no one said anything, especially since 3D Baseball was one of the very first titles I did.  Oh well.

Fortunately, I still have all of my full scanner bed sized scans that I used to then crop, so I don't need to re-scan anything, just check, and re-crop if needed.

Also fortunately, when I started doing Sega CD, the size differences were so varied in the tall manuals, it was easy to see when glancing at files while they were uploading, so with the other systems, I checked each manual for the correct crop dimensions, and updated my batch settings to use those, so Sega Saturn titles are the only ones affected.

It won't be until the weekend when I'll get a chance to check/crop/upload those, so hopefully my MediaFire account sticks around a little while longer.

You may want to pass your manual measurements on to Seymor Onion, He is planing extra tall Sega CD/ Saturn DVD cases after his other game cases are made.
How tall is a Saturn/CD case? Wondering how tall they are compared to 3DS 3DO boxes.

Also, thanks for the Dragonforce scans. BTW, the cover is cut off a bit on the right.

Edit - Fix

As for the Dragon Force manual, yep, just checked it and this is one of many that got caught in my "one size to crop them all", and it's not just the cover, you'll notice the vertical text on the right is also cut off on most pages (about 40 pixels worth).  My original raw scans prior to batch cropping have everything, so, when I relaunch ratigators.com, the corrected cropped scans will be uploaded (someone keeps reporting my MediaFire account, so I probably won't even bother taking the time to update those).

I went through all of the A's and B's, and it's not as bad as I feared.

It seems primarily confined to the Working Designs games (with the big thick manuals) and any late release Sega Saturn game (that had the cheaper quality manuals, not the thick almost card stock) like Burning Rangers or the 1998 sports games by Sega (World Series Baseball and Worldwide Soccer).  The later release games are roughly 1/8" wider than by default crop.  The Working Designs games, almost, but not quite 1/4" wider.

Games like Batman and the Battle Arena Toshinden, where the game rating in the lower right is really really close to the edge, this is actually how the manual is, so those weren't bad crops.

3D Baseball, the edge of the right "L" is cutoff on my original manual, though, my auto-crop took off about another 1/16" which made it a bit more noticeable.

Not hard to find, everything is nice and sorted on external drives.  I already fixed the cropping of #-G (less than 10% were affected, and in my notes I have 3D Baseball, Albert Odyssey, Burning Rangers, Contra, Criticom, Dragon Force, Fighters Megamix as losing some info from bad crops, and primarily EA titles (Andretti Racing, Darklight Conflict, FIFA titles, etc) that gained a ton of black space outside the manual area from crops larger than the manual sizes), though, uploaded to my new site that's not yet available.  Back inserts for Sega Saturn are good across the board, as I manually cropped every single one of those (and for the other systems, I checked the first scan and set custom batch crops per title based upon the dimensions of the first scan).

Even though I'm about to shutdown MediaFire for reasons noted previously (they get ad revenue from my scans, and I don't see a dime (not that I expect it), but they can't even be bothered to let me know who is requesting takedowns of all of my scans), I went ahead and purged all of the Dragon Force scans from there and uploaded my new Dragon Force crops (just the front cover and zip with everything).

Finished going through Sega Saturn scans and all of those that required a re-crop were re-cropped accordingly, and everything has been uploaded to my site, as opposed to MediaFire:

http://www.ratigators.com/

I kept the UI basic.  Click a system, scroll through the "shelf" of games (which uses a lazy load, so only the items on screen load for bandwidth's sake, but as you scroll and items come into view, they will load), click to load the manual (which uses some basic math to determine the viewable height and do some rounding to keep the amount of cached thumbnails on the server to a minimum (100 pixel height increments)), and click any page for a full screen view (if the default manual isn't already large enough to read).

With the variable height interior manual preview images, if you are the first person ever to visit the site with your specific vertical resolution, the preview images may take slightly longer to load while the server builds them (the top thumbnails are consistent for everyone).  The next time you view the same manual it will be quicker (or if someone running your same resolution has already viewed it).  I did this so the server only has to build what's required.

As for what Sega Saturn covers require a re-download, I originally cropped system wide at 2800 width.  The late release games with the lighter weight paper were apparently 20-30 pixels wider (Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Winter Heat, etc), as were the original release titles (Daytona USA, Panzer Dragoon, etc).  Oddly enough, just about every Acclaim title was also 30-40 pixels wider (with a few exceptions that were the original 2800).  Also, another odd occurrence, just about every early EA title (Andretti Racing, Darklight Conflict, Madden 97, NHL 97, etc) was 20-30 pixels shorter (though, their late release 98 sports games were the 20-30 pixels wider, like NHL 98).  All of the Working Design titles had wider manuals 10-50 pixels) except for Magic Knight Rayearth, which was the standard 2800 pixels wide (which was also their last game for the Saturn).

Oh, and 3D Baseball is still cut off.  You now at least see the "T" in TM in the logo.  Though, the way my manual was cut from the factory, there is no M at all.

The only manual that had actual text cut off on the inside was Dragon Force.  On the outside, Albert Odyssey (the "G" in RPG was cutoff), Dragon Force (same "G"), Criticom (part of the "TM"), and Fighters Megamix (the edge of the tagline).  Anything else was just the very right-most edge art (and as seen with my 3D Baseball, some original manuals might not have even had).

Just a minor update, I had a replacement manual for WWF Raw for 32X arrive in the mail yesterday.  My original manual had some damage to the artwork on the front from the removal of a rental sticker (one of the nasty foil ones that leave a VOID residue).

The new manual cover (the only thing I scanned as the rest was good) has been uploaded.

Huge thanks to a new Cover Project member, Specialt1212, who has been going through my site and letting me know things that need to be fixed, such as Sega CD games where I flipped two pages instead of one, resulting in some missing pages.

I lay blame squarely on my (then) newborn as the distraction :P

Sega CD 32X
Supreme Warrior: Missing Pages 30 & 31

Sega CD
Dark Wizard: Page 1 (labeled start up) is messed up it looks like the image was moved during scanning
Dungeon Master 2 Skullkeep: Missing Pages 30 & 31
Lethal Enforcers: Missing Pages 8 & 9
Microcosm: Missing Page 6 & 7
Third World War: Missing Pages 34 & 35

So, a year after uploading everything originally, those games are now once again complete.

It was also noted that my Virtua Fighter for Sega 32X was missing quite a few pages, though, after checking my manual, every page I had was scanned.  My manual seems to have two entire sheets that didn't get stapled in (resulting in 8 missing pages, pages 5, 6, 7, 8, 25, 26, 27, 28).  When I get a replacement manual for that, I'll get it scanned (assuming that it has all of its pages).

Specialt1212 is also sending me a batch of Sega Genesis and Sega Game Gear manuals to start up those sections.

Huge thanks!

Also, again, if anyone notices any issues, let me know and I'll get them fixed as soon as I can.

A replacement copy of Ghost House for Sega Master System arrived so I've replaced my insert scan that had the UPC cutout (my only Master System insert that had one).

Also, Specialt1212's package arrived, and I've gone through everything Sega Genesis related and created this spreadsheet:

http://bit.ly/ratigatorsgenesis

That way, everyone can see what I've already received as donations and what's in my queue for scanning.

Again, I can't thank Specialt1212 enough, and they also have the honor of being manual donor #1.

I've gotten started scanning Genesis manuals with a block of 12 games, which contains all 3 Phantasy Star games, all 3 Shining titles, and all 6 original Sonic titles (only the Sonic Classics manual is missing at the moment).

Also, I did things a bit differently since I'm not starting with a full/nearly full set as I did with my other scan projects, in that, instead of titles showing up when scanned, I'm showing everything.  Empty boxes means I don't yet have the manual and clicking will prompt a donation form as well as a full list of what I do/do not have, and a "SCAN PENDING" graphic means that I do have the manual on hand, and I just haven't scanned and uploaded it yet.  I'll be going alphabetical from here on out with what I have, and will bump up any donations sent in where the sender wants them back (and as a reminder, I cover shipping, including return shipping if you want them back).

Uploaded 10 more Sega Genesis games, though, 6 of those are inside a single manual, the 6-Pak 70 page manual.

I also added some additional notes to the front page of ratigators.com to list how many I've scanned out of how many I have out of how many there are, and I've added a column to the linked spreadsheet to also include a scan column to note which ones have been scanned.

Finished up the Genesis games through the letter A, and also thought I'd switch over to Game Gear to knock that out real quick since I only had about 20 manuals there.  I've gotten through 15 of them, and then 11 more showed up yesterday (with more on the way).

Finally picked up an extra copy of Virtua Fighter 32X to get a manual that wasn't missing pages, so that's been scanned and uploaded.

I also got around to picking up an extra copy of Fantasy Zone for Sega Master System to gut for the manual as well.  I was holding out for a loose manual sale, though, one never came up, but a decently priced complete copy did.  I'll do the same for Teddy Boy eventually assuming I don't come across a loose manual for sale there either.

Then that will leave just one US Sega Master System manual left to scan.

Found a deal on an extra copy of Teddy Boy for Sega Master System, so I picked it up just for the manual, so that just leaves me with one US manual left to scan, James Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing.  I also picked up an extra copy of Blade Eagle 3-D to replace my cover insert scan, as mine had some sunfading.  I've got a few with some wrinkles (Fantasy Zone II and Fantasy Zone: The Maze as well as Ghostbusters and Great Volleyball) that I'll eventually swap out just for my own purposes, though, 1980coelho has already done a fantastic job putting together a full set of US Master System covers, so there's probably no huge rush on that for anyone I would imagine:

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=12619.0

I also picked up another stack of Game Gear manuals and updated my spreadsheet on what I have, so I'm up to almost 60 Game Gear manuals (out of 234, so still a ways to go).

Also forgot to mention, I replaced my F-16 Fighting Falcon manual scan, as my original manual was kind of rough, and had some writing in the codes area.  I didn't plan on replacing it, though, it showed up in the lot I purchased just for the Teddy Boy manual.

The only other Master System manual that I'll probably eventually replace is the Aztec Adventure manual, as it's also pretty rough looking, though, it's definitely not high on my list of things to do.

I've already burned through selling quite a few lots on eBay of Master System stuff, though, I do have what hasn't sold after multiple re-listings, and my recent pickups to gut for replacements (because I couldn't find inserts or manuals separate).  This is what I had in an probably not-current list:

Fantasy Zone (no manual, because I stole it :))
Teddy Boy (no manual, because I also stole it :))
Blade Eagle 3-D (sunfaded insert, because I stole the good one :))
F-16 Fighting Falcon (complete, but rough manual, because, again, I stole the good one :))
Wonder Boy (I think complete, it came with the lot of card games I picked up just for a Teddy Boy manual)
Ghost House (complete, nothing gutted, just came in the lot above)
Great Football (complete, didn't sell after re-lists)
Monopoly (complete, variant with the correct spelling, though, cutout UPC, didn't sell)

and then loose manuals:

Double Dragon
Gangster Town
Missle Defense 3-D
Rambo: First Blood Part II
Rambo III
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego (the almanac, not the manual)

My Master System stuff is all boxed up, as out of all of my collections, it gets the least amount of play (from myself, as well as when company comes over), so there may be some more random stuff.  When I dive into it to actually piece together a complete Teddy Boy and swap out Blade Eagle 3-D inserts, if I find anything else, I'll let you know.

Had a user over at SegaAge clue me in on some manuals where an extra page got flipped when scanning, which resulted in 2 missing pages, in the following games:

- Bug Too! pages 6,7
- Center Ring Boxing 10,11
- Lost World, The - Jurassic Park 12,13
- Mass Destruction 14,15
- NBA Action '98 20,21
- NHL Powerplay '96 2,3
- Road Rash 18,19
- Robo Pit 14,15
- Robotica 13,14
- Romance Of The Three Kingdoms IV - Wall Of Fire 12,13

Also, did a quick file listing, currently at 13,774 scans. So hopefully people understand that there's a chance that unfortunately I might miss a few pages along the way (but quickly fix when notified :)

It's been a while since I posted a Sega manual scan update (since I already finished my complete Sega sets and took a Neo Geo and various Nintendo systems detour prior to getting back to scanning my incomplete Game Gear and Genesis manual sets).

Though, just finished uploading about 50 new Game Gear manual scans (almost 500 scans, roughly 1000 pages), which now exhausts my Game Gear manual collection.

I've got about 20 duplicate manuals on hand, and concerning actual Game Gear games, about 200, of which, probably 40% or so are duplicates from what I recall, so I've definitely got some stuff I need to clear out, and I always recycle the funds into picking up more manuals to scan.

But, until I get more Game Gear manuals, I've still got probably 130 additional Genesis manuals that I've yet to scan to keep me busy.

Also, quick link straight to the Game Gear stuff:

Definitely need more manuals for games starting with "A" so that first group you see before scrolling isn't so empty (the S's are definitely a bit more populated) :P
