Title: New UGC Game Gear Covers

Edit by BadChad:

Edited the first post in the thread to use it as our official UGC Game Gear cover thread rather than make a new one.

Original post by service_gamer:
Hello all,

I've posted here a couple of times and actually contributed some raw Genesis scans some time ago, but I've only recently gotten back into my personal cover project, so I've become something of a lurker in recent months.  My question now, though, pertains to Game Gear covers for the UGCs.  I recall some time ago that templates were created for this, but I've searched the forums for recent discussions on this, but have come up empty.  I would tackle this issue myself, but my Photoshop skills are incredibly limited.  And I'm not really requesting anything (as I have zero high-res artwork to work with for my Game Gear games and I realize that they are hard to come by), but I would love nothing more than to be able to line all my Genesis, 32x, and Game Gear games together on the shame shelf.  So, I guess my question is this:  Is there any chance of such covers being made for the UGC?  Of course it's perfectly all right if the answer is no, but I've been hopeful that the topic may come up again in conversation and I'm merely bringing the issue up for confirmation one way or another.

Thanks!

Eesh, the chances of that are probably slim, bro. I mean, I get the look that you're trying to accomplish on a shelf, and I totally understand your desire, but it's really hard to change something that's as set as these templates. The usual formulas is:

if game = handheld; then case = DS.
if game = console; then case = UGC.

It keeps collections more consistent that way. You're just looking for a different kind of consistency. :-\

Being a fellow Game Gear fan, I sympathize with you, and would be more than happy to slap together a basic Game Gear UGC template. But, beyond that, I can't really provide you with any sort of art big enough to take up a whole UGC cover, and I only have covers that I made myself for all of the Sonic Game Gear games, because those are the only ones I own, pretty much. Even then, they're all DS case sized, and upscaling them to UGC would probably look awful. :(

You might be best off if I made a sort of template that just had the purple stripes covering it, (I'm assuming that's the game box style you're looking for.) with a centered frame in the middle that would have the cover of the game. (Picture our TurboGraphx covers (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=4007.0) to get an idea of when I'm thinking.) That way, it would be easy for you to take the covers already created on this site, and do a real simple copy-pasta job onto the UGC template without worrying about distorting the images with upscaling.

What do ya say?

If you wouldn't mind making a template, I would definitely be interested in just having a go at it, but I certainly wouldn't want to impose on you.  I just appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I found 3 complete Game Gear games last week so heres a few retail covers to get the ball rolling. I have a bunch of extra Genesis cases so Im gonna be casing my Game Gear games in those using the UGC template.

*Cover previews moved to first post*

Ill probably get around to making DS case versions of these covers at some point.

These are awesome!  2 questions:  How can I download them?  Are you going to convert the other game gear games already on the site for DS cases?
Title: Re: Game Gear Covers for UGC
Post by: BadChad on March 27, 2011, 11:28:25 PM
Question 1: My list of completed covers is starting to pile up so Im thinking of sending everyhting over to tiktektak for approval soon so they'll be up on the site after that.

Question 2: I cant really convert any of the DS covers to UGC's because the boxes get seriously adjusted to fit that template. If we get more raw scans in for Game Gear games, Id be more than happy to make retail covers for them.

Your work with Chaos and Triple Trouble brought tears to my eyes. :D Could you box.net those two for me? Or, if they're going to be uploaded to the site during the next upload batch, I can wait 'till then. They look great, man!

One for the mediafire account. Not sure if my other GG covers are gonna pass so they might end up in there too.

Alright I'm sold.  I'm totally loving the idea of GG games in UGC cases now.  Hell, those Sonic coves up top have just convinced me to play my Game Gear more.

And now to buy more shelves...

BadChad, you need to make this a reality!  Game Gear games in UGC is perfect!  Your work on here is amazing all the time, I really hope this takes off, or at the very least we can get a thread of covers.  I love the Sonic ones, is there any way to download them?

Yes download links would be most great.

Also, any chance of Shinobi and Power Rangers covers?

As I'm running out of space I'm so not understanding Game Gear games in UGCs, unless you store the original box in there too.

But nice covers.

Yup, Ill be putting together a cover for that one real soon. Its gonna be made with Moby Games scans tho. I asked Lumberjack if he still had raw scans lying around from when he put together the DS case cover we have for Shinobi, he said he might but hed have to look through his recovered harddrive when he got it back (which he does now). So my guess is he either doesnt have them or hes just been too busy to check because I know hes going through some pretty stressful stuff right now.

As for the rest of the covers, Ill try and get them into the mediafire account soon. Glad you guys like the covers, Im storing my GG games in Genesis cases! :)

Could you take a picture of how they're being held in there?
Title: Re: New UGC Game Gear Covers

Everything fits pretty loosely. The manual is too short so it wont be held in by the manual clips and the cart will bounce around aswell but shouldnt fall out of the cart slot when the case is closed. I could take a picture but theres not much to show and you should get the idea from what I described. Im sure not everyone will be up for storing their GG games this way but I like the way it looks up on my shelf and its really the only way to store the manuals with the cart since they wont fit in DS cases.

Aw dang, okay that's what I was afraid of. I was thinking "Oh man, how did he figure out how to fit them in tightly?" I was hoping to be impressed.  ;D Is there a way to tightly fit GG games into a UGC?

See, I WOULD probably do this, but I self-made covers for ALL of the Sonic-related Game Gear games for DS cases, and the art I had was too small to scale up to UGC size. :-\

Somene had  (might have been BadChad) had some clips that could hold TurboGrafx 16 cards.
Put 2 of those in to hold a rubberband relly tight, that should hold cart in plase and put the manual under the cart.

Just a wierd suggsetion.  ;)

What I'm doing for this is taking the gamer gear cart cases that already exist, adding a more protrusive button to the bottom to open it easier, and either hot gluing the case into it or using double sided tape.

The reason that I was going to do this was simply because the template existed and I won an auction of empty genesis cases, and It will keep the manuals next to the games. :)

and they will also go better with the genesis collection I have on a shelf.

I'm with Mr. Chad on this one.

I want my GameGear games lined up right next to my genesis ones. If I have the box I'll just put it inside of the genesis shell, if I don't then I'm fine with super gluing a GameGear clear plastic cart shell on the inside of the genesis case. I like how the dimensions don't need to be changed very much from the original box to the genesis & ugc cases.

Um, Sonic..?  You made DS covers for all Sonic-related GG games?  Mediafire please!!!!!!

Eeeeehhhhhh, yeah, I did. But, you might not really want to use them. The only things I concerned myself with the covers were the fronts and the spines. The backs usually don't have anything besides a picture and the logo. Most of them have no info whatsoever, and if it does, it's a simple rectangular copy-paste of the original back of the box. This is why I never posted them to the forums.

If you're still interested, though, I'd be more than happy to put them up on my Mediafire account for ya. For me, it was better than naked DS cases for all of my Sonic games. Sonic IS the only franchise I bothered to collect every game for, so I figured they at least deserved temporary covers until I had time to put more effort into it. (Which wouldn't be for years. College is a hassle, so don't wait around for me to update them. If you want something to dress naked cases in, mine will work, but I wouldn't suggest them for a final product.)

EDIT: I went ahead and uploaded every Game Gear cover I've made, some of them better than others. Also, I just realized I couldn't find a good enough picture of Tails' Adventure, so I created a fake one from high-res art. Like I said, these should be used as empty case dressers, not final products. Game Gear covers in the folder on my Mediafire account are as follows:

- Columns (which is actually for holding my Super Columns game, I think.)
- Cool Spot
- Sonic 1
- Sonic 2
- Sonic Chaos
- Sonic & Tails (The Japanese version of Sonic Chaos.)
- Sonic Blast
- Sonic Drift (Japan only)
- Sonic Drift 2
- Sonic Labyrinth
- Sonic Spinball
- Sonic Triple Trouble (Using the EU version of the logo. I couldn't find a US version of the TT logo. :-\ )
- Tails' Adventure
- Tails' Skypatrol (Japan only)
- Space Invaders (Also, I think holding my Super Space Invaders)
- Cheese Cat-Astrophe with Speedy Gonzales
- Taz in Escape from Mars

That's all in my Mediafire account waiting for ya. ;)

EDIT AGAIN: I just remembered, the spines of all the Sonic games have a different image of Sonic decorating the Sega logo at the bottom. I just did this for fun. If you want to edit him out, it would be VERY easy using the GG template on the forums. :P

I'll preface this by saying that in no way is this post meant to seem pushy or impatient.  I fear that an inability to convey tone in this post will make my message seem like "Well, where are they?," but having said that, I'm curious if the site will be able to host Bad Chad's covers.  If it won't happen, no big deal, I'll just keep trying my hand at improving my photoshop skills to the point that I can make covers look that good.  But I'll admit that I've been chomping at the bit to print off the Sonic covers since they were posted a few weeks back :)

Well If you guys can post up box scans, Id be happy to put them together. Id probably concentrate more on covers I need first (because theres alot of bad game gear games out there) but I can always thow together covers to help you guys aswell.

If you want to know what Im looking for that I would make priority to put together, heres a list of GG games I need scans for:

- Jurrasic Park
- Shining Force - Sword of Hayia (just for a higher quality cover)
- Shinobi 1 & 2
- Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2
- Sonic Drift 2
- Streets of Rage 2
- Vampire - Master of Darkness
- Virtua Fighter Animation
- X-Men - Gamemasters Legacy

I picked up boxed copies of Sonic Chaos and Ristar the other day, so I figured I'd scan and share.

Ristar:

(http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/ec9334395769218275df4200f6eef0f69fb3ba529d9027fefaeaf952c27b31d62g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=qd1d8oz8mshjw6r&thumb=5)

I scanned my copy of Sonic Chaos, but I don't think it turned out very well, plus there's already a cover for it, so I didn't upload it. I still can though, if requested.

I really like the idea of putting Game Gear games into UGC/clamshells, and if I understand correctly the sentiment here is to have them all in the purple spine template to go along with the Genesis and 32x style boxes. Well that got me thinking. The Sonic 1 and 2 covers were made before the purple spine template was introduced, and even if one were to come by a Sonic 1 or 2 box, I think trying to convert a scan of those to the new template would be rather ugly.

However, somewhere (hopefully on the internet) the original art for the covers exists, and if found could easily make the transition. I managed to run across these two images (the best I could find), which I believe came from the Sonic Gems Collection.

(http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/0135080aa4867386829bf48c5fc12636823ab3debf223d110f6f7e5ee45373732g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=2hvjlzuj42cku2s&thumb=5)

Obviously these particular files would make piss poor covers, but could possibly be a decent holdover until better quality images are found.

Finished a couple per request.

Streets of Rage (http://www.box.net/shared/5z03hl1kdpvu11e03xu4)

Sonic Blast (http://www.box.net/shared/ysds4lhh9eagfpar3oi5)

This one is far from the quality standards of the site, but it should make a good place holder if anyone wants to use it. If anyone happens to have this game/know where to get a hi-res scan, let me know and I'll be glad to fix this one up even better.

Looks good but I see a few things that would need to be fixed to make this a retail cover. The ESRB logo's should be removed off the front and back and the Sega logos on the top front corner and spine should be removed aswell. And the last thing is there should be a bit of black between each screenshot and the edge of the page. All the old Game Gear games did the same thing to match the colour on the spine. In this case its black, but Sonic 2 would be green as you can see in the links:

Ah, I forgot all about removing the ESRB logos. I noticed that mariocaseman had mentioned that in his post but it completely slipped my mind.

Thanks for the suggestions, man. Fixed everything you mentioned and re-uploaded it.

Wrong bro.  These are my donations / requests, and I asked for them to be retail.  Shenske created both templates and as you can see BadChad advised on Streets of Rage.

Haha, it would probably drive me crazy too. Like mariocaseman said though, they were made retail per request. I'd be happy to whip up some customs with the purple template if you need any of those though.  :)

While there is certainly merit to making the uniform purple cover I feel we should always make a retail cover of the games if we're making the custom.

If only for posterity.

Hello, I use the translator to help me.

I see you know stir well with imaging programs. I can not do anything. Could someone please make a standard Master System cover (like the Game Gear, Master System, but with writing) and instead of purple, two colors make green? I really wanted, if someone can just do the outline and send me would help a lot! Thank you!  :)

Friend Arseen I am very grateful to help me! The color was very good. But this cover is too small to print. From the "cover the project" are quite large. (Look Out Run and Afterburner). I wanted one that size. It could make a little bigger? And also put a black outline written "master system"? I would be grateful. Hug!   :)

Then remove the bad scan links!!!! I checked two of the images and just assumed they were all junk because of that. Get rid of the sub 300dpi images in the post and your request will have a much better chance of being fulfilled.

Brandon already agreed to do any low quality ones so I'm not removing anything.  If you guys could whip up the 600dpis in the meantime that would be great.  For example, Land of Illusion, Legend of Illusion, Deep Duck Trouble, NBA JAM.  Hey Shenske, please look at three for me:  Castle of Illusion, Lucky Dime Caper, and Streets of Rage 2.  Are those 600dpi?  I got them from a friend but I still have the boxes and can scan them myself if they are not good enough.

The Streets of Rage 2 you linked here (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=iwr1y1o4ldgxdb7&thumb=4), looks exactly like the one already in the raws here (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Game%20Gear/akrate69.retail.raw_gg_streetsofrage2_front.jpg), so that one can be made with 600dpi scans.

Great work on that Mega Man cleanup!  ;D That's much cleaner than what I'm working with, so by all means, you can do that one if you like. No sense in making two if one is vastly superior, haha.

If you work on the back, ill finish the front, I'm redrawing it to get the seal off and not have it look like a blurry mess. Now that I drew Mega man, removing the seal should be easier. Do you know the names of the robot masters on the front?

I may take a shot sometime in the near future at the Megaman back, larryinc. Doesn't look too terribly hard to just completely redo.

Great work on that Mega Man cleanup!  ;D That's much cleaner than what I'm working with, so by all means, you can do that one if you like. No sense in making two if one is vastly superior, haha.
Did you finish the back of the cover for Mega Man yet?

Nope, I haven't. I was working on the front the last time I messed around with it. Getting that seal off was a real pain, haha.
If you work on the back, ill finish the front, I'm redrawing it to get the seal off and not have it look like a blurry mess. Now that I drew Mega man, removing the seal should be easier. Do you know the names of the robot masters on the front?

Didn't know if you'd messaged Satoshi yet. From top to bottom on the front: Star Man, Bright Man, and Napalm Man, and that's Stone Man in the bottom left-hand corner.

Sorry for the delay! Finally finished up both of the Mortal Kombat boxes!

I may take a shot sometime in the near future at the Megaman back, larryinc. Doesn't look too terribly hard to just completely redo.

As always let me know if you notice anything wrong with them. I'll be glad to fix any problems.

On the MK 1 Spine, did the box have the Acclaim logo..?  Wasn't it Arena?  Was it horizontal or vertical?  I want whatever it is retail please.

ESRB rating should be the old-school grading system.  MA-13, not esrb i dont think..

MK1 = MA-13
MK2 = MA-17

Is the MK2 spine retail?  I do not have the raws.  Is the acclaim logo vertical or horizontal?

I have it downloaded but I am still without FTP access at the moment.
I lack the motivation at the moment to merge your template with mine (if thats what you were hoping for). I may end up putting it on the templates page as its own separate template. When i get FTP access back we'll see where my motivation lies :)

I'll go ahead and finish it whenever I get some time to kill, and once larryinc is done, he's more than welcome to add his cleaned up front to it.

Since UGCs are so hard to get nowadays, I tried cropping the Mega Man Game Gear cover into a Genesis case, and it worked great! Thanks a lot!

I just uploaded the template i was working on in my box.net profile. Its labeled "Universal Sega Template by Shenske b". Its not completely cleaned up by i haven't had a whole lot of time to work on covers lately. I'll update and finish when the day comes that i get ftp access back.

Not yet, I don't really have a whole lot of free time. I really wish i could go through and explain. I have Monday and Tuesday off. I will try my best to catch up on some things here one of those days.

Ok, just glad you haven't forgotten.  Question though:  Should I hold off on submitting my 2 new raws until the template is completed?  I'm wondering if it would be a lot more work for artists to do them now just to have to convert them later?

The colors and locations of items within the template will not change. I'm just cleaning up the naming and organization area  :)   You can go ahead and use this template for future Game Gear covers. I am actually more concerned w/ working on the other areas of the template.

Ringing in the New Year with a treat guys!  Thanks to Brandon, we have 3 new UGC Retail covers done from my 600dpi scans!

Sonic Fans rejoice!  Now all we need is Shenske to get the purple stripe template up (minus the Majesco logo he used on Sonic 2) and these will be perfect!  Enjoy:

Reviving an old thread.

Darn it. Now I'm liking the UGCs for these, especially now that I can throw in the manuals. Anyone use the UGC with the Game Gear clear covers? I still have my old ones, so I'd be willing to try that than keep on modifying DS boxes.

Does anyone have a spare UGC they'd be willing to sell me?

I would just like to point out to folks that Game Gear manuals are the exact same size as Sega Master System manuals, and that if you have any spare Master System cases, they fit perfectly inside them (subsequently, SMS cases are nearly the same size as UGCs).

Having said all that, is there any chance someone could make US retail (or European in the case of Pengo) inserts for these?
