I don't know where to put this, if any moderator can move it would great.
Every body knows that the N64 cartridge has no top/end label's and if you don't keep your game's on boxes/cases it take's some time to find the game you are looking for. That's why i going to show you how to make your own top/end label's.
First download a cover from the website:
Then make a new image on photoshop you can use any size you want, i use this
width 2,205 inches
tall 0,512 inches
(http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/4859/62618718.jpg)
Select your downloaded cover and copy/paste some part of the cover and put it on your label
(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8955/50320872.jpg)
Some changes to look better
(http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/5376/35271494.jpg)
And youre ready to print your label and put it on your cartridge.
I'm not a expert on photoshop and since i can do this label any body can.
So here are some top label's i did last night:
http://www.box.com/s/y8khefhelm5uh1evmhzm (http://www.box.com/s/y8khefhelm5uh1evmhzm)
-
and how does it look on the cartridge?

and how does it look on the cartridge?
Well for me they look pretty good, what you think?
Please ignore the roadrash label that one was a really low quality version, and i made a alternative label (left ) and is almoust the same thing to do. For those who want that look on the label click here: http://www.box.net/files#/files/0/f/0/1/f_582150650 (http://www.box.net/files#/files/0/f/0/1/f_582150650)

Not bad looking at all, NICE! :)

Not bad looking at all, NICE! :)
Yeah and don't take more than 5 minutes to make. I think the left label's with the N64 logo look better but i think it deppents of the game image.
-
Hello
First, thanks a lot for this guide
and now for my question : shouldn't I resize the endlabel I've pasted in my new image to make it fit my cartridge ?
If I must, what are the dimensions ? (I've been looking into the FAQ and I've used the search button but didn't find
any other thread about top/endlabels)
-
I don't think the dimentions are decided yet, so make your end labels perfect dimentions and maybe your dimensions are chosen as the standard.
-
ok, I'll try this
So far it seems a snes and n64 cartridge toplabel's dimension go like this :
SNES : 1 x 6.5 cm (which would be around 0.39 x 2.56 in)
N64 : 1 x 5.8 cm (0.39 x 2.262 in)
I tried to make a toplabel of an N64 cartridge, with the cover of Castlevania, here what it looks like :
-
Fixed the preview. ;)
I think the label could be bit taller, and with brighter colurs so it would be clearer, but nice start.
And when you want to distribute the finished image upload it to Mediafire or Box.net and link here, as the imageshack screws your images.
-
Ok, I tried to make the Castlevania logo as clear as possible, and made the image a bit taller, as you recommended
here a second version : (http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/94a7764f870c7d6f16002f08a9061b847377e057f6dabf7c5c1e7caf88785b756g.jpg)
here's a third version, only difference is that I adjusted the N64 logo on the left, of course the image is larger, but I don't
think that should be a big deal : (http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/b9ea83ade8313a43b9a5b15698fde3b9176eceec0855a54693c65049f84366636g.jpg)
-
I'd say take the Nintendo 64 logo of your first label, turn it counter-clockwise 90 degrees and ad it to the second label (reduse the black portion on the left a bit first) and I think we have a winner.
-
I'm not sure I got all of it, but did you mean something like this ?
Or with this one ? :
-
This one: (http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/3cb63222daa40a10e69a5c5c119f0b1cd5c035bd9040f4613398ddb08e5f97696g.jpg)
Now just provide bit higher quality version so I / we can judge the quality
This one is otherwise perfect but as a preview version is bit jaggedy on the letters.
What I mean is make it @ 300 DPI and give us direct link, thank you! :)
-
It's the first time I do that, so I hope I did it right :
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/135e98e52aa46e5a047f8ff3d305b64ad9719779ee22c7d1bf9953cece79afb46g.jpg
-
Close, but one thing is still off: This label prints out 1.84 by 0.51 CM, so way too small.
Streching the image by 350% to 6.43 by 1.78 CM creates proper size but blurry.
So do one final adjusment: Using originally atleast 300dpi images do 6.43 by 1.78 CM label @ 300 dpi. ;)
-
I doubt this is it but... I tried the closest possible to what you asked... there was a lot of useless
space to the right so I cut it...
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/2c61af58d88c18ec90a823a0d58fd7cde0d6126e132a8b64a56257afeab47d0c6g.jpg
-
Getting pretty much perfect!
But problem might rise later with longer name games if this is accepted as the standartized size for the label, but we you will have to make more of thiese for other games before. ;)
I stretched the width by 140% resulting a width of 5.94, by 150% to width of 6.36 and by 160% to width of 6.78.
I'd say the last one resulted the best dimensions for the label, but the choice is yours. :)
Edit: Even 170% strech to 7.21 looks good
-
Oh, I see... I thought the dimensions were done individually for each games
... Well, I can send the former image, without the cut space
here : http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/8fe033d93faf5dc7f0587bbae86d9e0b5d4be3b49a5b4f9e2cb1b52e5372a7876g.jpg
-
I did some fiddling around:
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/3d39849a8993d93b49eda1d8486dd6269cd432b3123d4607cfd0b263f4dff6196g.jpg
Streched the castlevania part 250% widthwise the shrunk the whole thing to 80%.
It looks bit off now but should be fine when printed.
Open the image in paint resize to 30% and you see what it would about look when printed.
If someone wants to print this PRINT IT UNSHRUNK.
This was quick job to show what I think the label should look, so if you want to redo it PLEASE DO!!! :D
-
did you stretched with Paint ?
-
did you stretched with Paint ?
Yep, Windows 7 paint, which is not qiuite as bad with screwing resolution as the XP and Vista versions.
-
Ok
I did resize it to 30% on Paint, the "Nintendo 64" logo is a bit messed up, don't you think ?
-
Yeah maybe at bit, but it might be OK when printed.
But PLEASE do better one, mine was made quickly just as a suggestion what it should maybe look like.
-
Well, I tried to do the same thing on Photofiltre... maybe, I say, maybe the reducing to 30%
does less damage... but aside from that, he doesn't look that different :
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/942eab98d8012f8fa1673bd448912ef31369f39a585e3dd3a958abb0dfce0f246g.jpg
-
I'd say that is good enough!
Now we just need one of the Higher Admins to descent from the sky above us and judge the result. (And maybe even post the result as permanent addition to the site).
:)
Oh, I see... I thought the dimensions were done individually for each games
DUH! Of course the labels have to be same size.
They can vary from console to console but all the labels for specific console have too be the same size.
-
k'k'
I did (yes, again) the same label but with a background this time (or at least I tried...)
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/12aa50df659d7c4e9044b9b10c2269f665a206803eb5c55cfda5d0629f6c86ca6g.jpg
I don't really what to think about the red mark around the "castlevania" title... I know it looks awkward on the moon...
on the other side... it's blood surrounding the title... it's got to be there... I don't know...

Nice works, all look pretty good. Now for the last on, i think you should find a better quality and less pixelated picture for the background.
Now for the official size i used 1.30 cm x 6 cm... or was 5.50?
-

I'd say not needed. When you print the label the pixelation dissapears. Do the 30% test and you'll see.

Which is it?
Converting this to either size is easy, only little trimming needed.
-
Well, anyway...
if that's accepted as the standard size for N64 toplabel, I'll work my way to make the same for the Snes cartridge
since the japanese and european ones don't have labels.
In fact, there ARE european cartridges using the US format, but so far I only have Zelda - A Link to the Past in this
state. And I know for a fact that it also existed in PAL with the Japanese cartridge format... I don't know why the mix...
I believe it has something to do with what came out in Paris and what came out in the other regions of the country, but
I don't know much about that...

You mean PAL games in US style cartridges, NO way, US cart's don't fit PAL (EU or AU) consoles.
-
I swear I got a snes PAL game with a US shaped cartridge, and yeah, I need to use my adaptor
to play it on my snes since it's Famicom shaped...
Like I said, I don't really know much. I just once met a girl from Paris (or around Paris) who told
me that SNES had an American shape... but maybe she did use an american one after all... but
that would be weird since she wasn't very keen on english... but maybe she just didn't know
about these different formats and everything
as for my US-EUR game, I could record it (if only I had a camera, which will come sooner or later)... and maybe
this was some crazy scientisft doing : taking the EUR chip of the game and puting it into an american cartridge
in order to take over the world :D
(note : don't mind the name changing, I used my msn name when I registered, but if I'm to work here as a label maker,
I'd better use my "real" name)

Indeed, i have a few pirate or bootleg games on PAL shape but since i don't have so many cartridges (just like 20 or 30) i don't do any kind of label for them.
btw...
the N64 top label, they gonna be offiacily accepted in TCP?
-
I don't know...
I hope it is, so I can start to make top label for N64 and snes cartridges for you all, guys
EDIT : I don't know if the decision has been taken yet, but I just thought I'd tell you
that I did try the same way with a SNES label... nothing great and certainly not the
final work, but I thought I'd show it to you :

Maybe you can remove the Super Nintendo Logo (i think it's too long for the small label) and just leave the name of the game.
Or make a SNES logo (just like that SNES nothing else) to make it shorter.
Just a few ideas i throw in the air.
-
noted ! I'll try this (I'm working on my site at the same time, but nothing's impossible for me...... at least, not until
I tried my best without result)
also, I was thinking, any idea for a background ? should I let the title go on a black font, or should I had a background
picked up from the game ? that goes also for the N64 toplabel ?
-

Yes, use European SNES logo.
And use higher quality Metroid text.
-

Black and simple is good, graphics in the background would get blurry as the label si small, same goes to N64 and other possible labels.
An if I may suggest: If you make Genesis / Mega Drive ones use the Japanese MD logo as it is the smallest
-
I think it must be the most simply and functional as posible ;D
A little bit of minimalistic art don't hurt.

Ok, I'll try to get started on this if my label for snes and N64 are accepted as the standard size :)
EDIT : I have made endlabels for my N64 and SNES cartridge but have no photo to prove it, so keep in touch and I'll show them to
you eventually...
-
I have a question: How do you put this on the cartridge? Do you use tape, glue, or sticker paper?
-

Sticker paper is best, and either print with laser printer or laminate the label so colors won't run.
-
nice. I would probably try that on the side of the box. =)
-
I am not a fan of the U.S. SNES label art work. Most of the labels are typically black of color and instead of the colorful SFC logo we get the large gray box-like version. I always thought that the SFC logo would look nice on the top to identify the system. I don't like to mess around too much with original designs but I like the idea and I'll post an example using the colorful logo with the Final Fantasy II fax label that I am still trying to finish creating. vide infra
(http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv8/selachianx/custom_snes_top.png)
;D Just adding my two cents. If anyone else likes to keep it simple and close to retail then try my idea ...
-
I swear I got a snes PAL game with a US shaped cartridge, and yeah, I need to use my adaptor
to play it on my snes since it's Famicom shaped...
You know you can "cut" the tabs inside the slot to do the same effect? I know it's a hardware modification and some people don't want their console to be "modified" but it's easy as hell and you won't have to use an adapter again :D The only thing that kept super famicom cartridge from playing on a north america super nintendo was those two little tabs (cartridge shape was a bit different on the back so...)
Just to mention, if you play PAL games on your SNES, check for compatibility though... you might already know it anyways... just though it could help just in case :)

Do you know where I can print my cartridges label? I don't know what to use (type of paper, glossy finish, glue)... there is nothing on site saying a "real" procedure, just some "suggestions"... do you think you could help, or do you use repro site like gr.com...
The reason for this question is because sometimes, when I go and make some print out of my neighbor professionnal printer shop, there is a difference in color, hue, saturation, contrast and luminosity than on my screen... also, when I use pure black, their printer tend to put too much ink and there is a little "hill" of ink on top of the sleeve... Is repro giving special attentions to that and is the result more "legit like" labels or are they more "it's obvious it's not genuine" labels... ?

I can't decide if you're a latent spammer or if you're being serious. Previous statement due to the QTip plug and the printing service interrogation.
First of all, I do not own Adobe or Mac shares and I hate both companies and their mass-produced products. When you are ready to step it up to the pro level, seek Autodesk software and step into the 3d world. Maya, ImageStudio and Max are great especially, for gamedev needs.
Further, we are not counterfeiters here so what is the difference? any cheap printer and high gloss paper products should do just fine to replace labels and boxes. Since Nintendo does not sell these products this coverproject is great for art collectors and artists and those with damaged goods in need of replacements. The suggestions offered by site members are suitable for anyone.
If you are trying to make a counterfeit label then, you would need more than mass-produced printers. Printers sold and serviced at office supply stores do not meet professional standards. You would want to look into purchasing a Printing Press. exempli causa, Brady PowerMark, DuraLabel PRO et cetera. I do not see a need to be so serious about the printing process but I am not judging anyone. As far as colors, try calibrating monitor and printer; cleaning printing nozzles; try programming postscript but if you use Photoshop then Adobe already programmed it with the appropriate PostScript. Perhaps add a few Pantone swatches to your collection or search the net for RGB Colorspace and Gamuts.
Hope this helps. I am happy with a low end printer and high gloss paper but then I do not print my labels and boxes. I collect digital copies. I enjoy the artwork.
Have a pleasant day/night...

I can't decide if you're a latent spammer or if you're being serious. Previous statement due to the QTip plug and the printing service interrogation.
I'm serious sir, sorry for the way I express myself... english is not my native language, so I might say things in a strange way.
First of all, I'm not a spammer, I don't know why you are saying that : what would be the point in doing so?!? I was asking fair questions and was telling the truth about the tabs for the super nintendo cart slot. Check some youtube video and you'll see I am not saying bullshit (You might know anyway)
Second of all I really am not a conterfeit guy, as I own over 700 original games for a load of system, half of them boxed and such (don't own crappy games nor sports games nor race games as they don't fit my taste)... Well, I am just going to explain why I ask such a thing for the labels : All of my north america super nintendo entertainment system who have their japanese equivalent got their PCB swapped in the japanese outershell. So, that mean I buy everything 2 times (for snes)... It's pretty legit if you ask me and probably crazy, but I am like that, just don't judge me as I am not doing anything irrationnal. I just love the japanese artwork WAY better than the north america ones, even for the new generation games...
That explained, I will say that I want to do the same things with genesis PCB (circuit board - ROM) on a japanese megadrive outershell. I wanted to do it but came soon to a problem. It's impossible to swap without destroying the megadrive cartridge label. So, an idea came to me : why not printing the japanese label and put it on a genesis shell? The idea is tastefull as there will be no need to open the megadrive cart. There is a lot of sports game that cost less that 50 cents on certain used shop, so I would buy those and put the "modified" label on the cartridge and put the original game on the cart, swapping the crappy sport game for a cherished game of mine.I like my stuff to fit my taste, and japanese artworks are near always better than the american ones... Just want to have something that looks real good, like the original, even if I know it isn't... Understand my idea now? I would never do counterfeit as :
1. My collection would loose it's meaning (+ ebay cost already too much, don't want to buy something non genuine for the same price as a real, so I wouldn't participate in this kind of plot...)
2. I would buy counterfeit myself but I really hate that kind of things BECAUSE I am someone who fight for copyrights (I am a cartoonist, and people not respecting the copyright stuff piss me off - buying repro is ok if you own the original, but I find it not suiting my taste, except for rare disc games to prevent destroying the original or anything)
3. I know it sounds idiotic, but I have absolutely no mean of doing repro : I know almost nothing out of programmation and such
4. I wouldn't loose my name over a 1$ profit or risk going against the law for some money (it sounds stupid, but I think the law is there for a reason, even if people complains about them, mankind need such a thing as "freedom limitation", except for some stupid law like there's an a**h*** breaking in your place, you can't kick his ass cause he can sue you for it... dumb if you ask me)
5. I don't have the time to do so, and yes, you can tell me to learn japanese to play those games without having to swap, but hey, it takes a load of time to learn foreing languege... I already can't keep up with english a good way....
Check my other posts, you might understand a little better what I am doing... Sorry for the "long" answer and sorry if it looks agressive, I just don't want to be taken as a counterfeiter cause it goes against my thinking and I don't want to be treated as such.
Anyhow, THANKS FOR THE ANSWER, even with me saying (up there), I still appreciate the answer you gave me and am ok with everyone doing what they want, as long as it doesn't kill games :) Later on and good day/night too :)
Also note : for the spammer thing, i think people who try and participate on commutauty well being can't be called "spammer"... I think... check : http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=5226.0 I worked thousands of hours to be able to do those covers (it doesn't look like it but finding nice artworks for those covers was a real pain... and some picture editing was really something)
-
I too was (and maybe still am ;)) wondering are you for realz or are you spammer.
But so far so good.
And PLEASE do scan your boxes as the raw materials for covers are really needed.
-
Hijack!
-Arseen just wants a spamming buddy =D, it's not his fault =D You failed the interview I think =D
/Hijack!
-
I try not to spam, altough I admit talk a lot. ;D
Besides don't tease me or I will call brosb4403s to keep you in check? ::) ;)
-
I try not to spam, altough I admit talk a lot. ;D
There is nothing bad in talking a lot pal, it does mean you have something to say and got a lot of ideas about anything and everything. I like those kind of people : you never get bored with them and that's good!
By the way, I will try uploading RAW scans as soon as possible, just give me some time cause I've got a lot of homeworks + family + job + music + art + sport, so time is just a little bit missing, if you know what I mean ;) But I definately wish to help cover project as it is the only site giving quality product without trying to sell them or make profit of some sort out of it. I do wish my works are good enough to make things progress, even though I can admit I lack some "taste" people usually like. I don't wanna do repro, I wanna do custom :) I hope it will help people box their games :D
Oh! if any of you ever come across eien no filena for super famicom (eternal filena), a japanese release, mention it to me. I can pay good price for this game (even though I know this site is not for selling buying... just that there is a lot of collectors out there willing to sell their stuff... this game is an underrated gem if you don't consider the AWFUL music... play the game on mute and be happy :)
-
Worked fine fore me, I prefer them to cover up all the middle piece though so that how I sized them.

I think that he just use the spine of the box on each game and just cut in the part where the name is, but where better if some of them don't have those parts of company logo that he missed erasing
