I recently came across this site looking for a replacement back insert for my US NTSC Saturn Bomberman (has now been located), but I have a near complete collection of a few systems (mostly Sega), and I can try to fill requests that have yet to be filled and uploaded. I have quite a few time commitments, but I'll do my best to fill all requests. Some titles are still sealed, but I don't recall which ones offhand, so there may be some I can't easily scan. Below are the titles I have available to scan (titles are linked for those requests that have already been filled):
All files are now linked from ratigators.com (http://www.ratigators.com):
Sega CD (missing Night Trap (blue box re-release))
Alll manuals scanned, back inserts done.

To try and keep this thread as clean as possible, I'll update the first post and hyperlink the games that were requested that I filled (that way, people don't have to go digging for links).
New requests filled:
Sega CD
Keio Flying Squadron
Shadow of the Beast II
Dreamcast:
Cannon Spike
-
yeah, that'll be really handy at least until site uploads are restored.
You should put a link to this thread in your sig, could come in handy
-
Consider it done.

Hey,
I have some requests for ya. These would be awesome! If you don't mind to scan the Discs as well, I would really appreciate it, but whatever you can do would be great. Thanks!
All Sega Saturn:
* Lunacy
* Virtual Hydlide
* Spot Goes to Hollywood
* Hi Velocity
-
I hipe you don't think I'm abusive. For the games listed below, I had to improvise covers with material I found on the net or had to do vector tracing to make the low res image look better.
I would live If I can get my hands on original good quality scans so I can mod the covers I made the site.
Please let me know if it's an inconvenience.
Mega Race
Mickey Mania
Night Trap (red box)
WWF Rage in the Cage
Jaguar XJ220
Crime Patrol
Demolition Man
Popful Mail
Puggsy

I've got these linked in the main listings above. Sorry, but I don't like to do disc scans. I hope that you understand. Though, I do know this site has disc scans that you may be able to use:

I've got all of these set aside to scan tomorrow morning. I may not get to all of them in one sitting, but I'll get them all scanned. My scanner goes fairly quick at 300dpi scanning to a USB drive directly from the scanner, though, I'd rather use software to scan at 600dpi. It takes longer, but I think it gives you more options when it comes to creating a custom cover.
Though, I can't guarantee how well Popful Mail will scan, as it's one of the Working Designs foil prints.

I'll be able to get to the other 4 you requested tomorrow morning.

Would you mind uploading a scan of corpse killer? That's the only Saturn game I own that I don't have a case for, and I'd really appreciate it.

Sure, not a problem. If I don't get to it tomorrow, I'll have a chance on Friday.
Also, I'm hoping out of all of this, this thread gets noticed by someone who owns Saturn Bomberman (USA) for Sega Saturn that can scan me a new back insert :D

I've scanned and linked up Mickey Mania, Popful Mail and Puggsy. I also correct the back scan for Demolition Man and Mega Race, as I noticed in my attempts to flatten the spines to scan, it caused the back to pop up ever so slightly which caused some slight blurring in spots. Also, these latest scans are at 300dpi. Let me know if that's a problem. I didn't want to do them at that, but I can really knock these out much much quicker (in about a quarter of the time).
The last one I have to scan for you is WWF Rage in the Cage, which I'll have tomorrow.

That gets me caught up on the current requests. Hopefully, someone can track down a scan of Saturn Bomberman :)

Hi man, and welcome on board.
I would really apreciate if you could upload Tokyo Xtreme Racer for me, only the first one since there is a scan of TXR2 on the upload section.

Id love some Legend of Oasis scans to put together a cover. Any chance you could scan the manual too? Once I get around too it I plan to reprint quick black and white manuals for all my Sega CD and Saturn games to fit in DVD cases and its impossible to find scans for saturn manuals. Theres a few manual scans I need but Ill just bug you for one to start. ;)
Thanks.

Done and linked. As for scanning the entire manual, in order to keep the staples from scratching my scanner glass, I'd have to remove them (or put some tape over them). Either way, it doesn't sound like a safe time for either my scanner or my manual. So, as much as I'd like to help out, I don't think it's something I'd like to undertake. I hope you can understand.
-
Well since these would just be quick manuals Im throwing together I wouldnt ask you to remove the staples or anyhthing since I dont really care about the quality of the scans. The only way I could see the staples scratching the glass would be if you were scanning the cover or middle pages of the inside of the manual and you pressed down too hard. You could always cut out a small strip of paper to put over the staples when you scan it rather than using tape and could scan a low DPI to reduce scan time. I dont think it would harm you scanner or your manual but its up to you.
Thanks for the scans. Ill try and get this together sometime today.
-
I have scanned many manuals, most taken apart, it really doesn't damage the manual if you do it carefully.
And some are scanned without taking them apart and the stable has never caused scratches. The scanner glasses are pretty scratch-proof or at least very resistant to scratches.
-
I would really love a Daytona USA scan. I've been looking for one for a long time.

I'm going to give it a go at a manual scan tomorrow morning with a small strip of paper covering the staples. I'll post the results.

I don't have a problem re-scanning this if there is a problem with the current scan out there. I saw there has already been covers posted, and there was already a raw scan posted here:

Just do a search for dmc1974.retail.raw_saturn_daytonausa.

Would it be possible to upload Dino Dudes, Alien Vs Predator and Kasumi Ninja for atari jaguar ;D

Noticed we dont have an NTSC cover for Clockwork Knight 2. If you could scan that for me Ill put it together!
-
Atari Jaguar:
Cannon Fodder
Power Drive Rally
Ultra Vortek
That would be awesome. Oh, and I don't know if anybody already said it but welcome to the project. That's a really great way to introduce yourself ;)

As for the Jaguar games, I'll have to break down the boxes, so those will take a bit longer. Though, I did check the 6 games requested, and none of those are sealed, so they are more than do-able. I'll have them in a day or two.

You are the man my brotha! Thanks in advance.

A note about the Jaguar scans. I cropped these in the way that made the most sense to me, with the top and bottom flaps included in the scan I labeled as (Front) and the spine included in the scan labeled as (Back). The left spine was cropped out of the (Front) scan, else there would have been a bunch of random white. Though, the left and right spines are identical (I double checked all games I scanned, and they were identical on all 6).
Also, on the scan for Kasumi Ninja, there's a sticker advertising the free headband. The sticker has been on the box now for 16 years, and I didn't dare try to peel it off to get a clean scan.
I'm still on the lookout for a back insert scan of Saturn Bomberman (USA) if anyone has one :)

tsolfan,
So i finally got around and started editing the uploads you posted (thanks for that). But now I have a question.
What scanner and setting are you using, and are you "Descreening"? The reason i ask is because the scans look kinda rough and pixelated.
To understand what I'm talking bout, look at this scan I uploaded a wile back. You will see that the image is a lot smoother.
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20SegaCD/velvet396.retail.raw_segacd_road%20avenger%20front001.jpg
Now don't get me wrong.. I really, REALLY appreciate your contribution to the project, but I think we can get a much better results when making a cover if the scans are a little better quality.

Thanks for the feedback.
My scanner is a HP Photosmart C309A.
I tried a few different methods, and settled upon how I'm currently doing it (and I'm open to constructive criticism :)
I originally did some scans through Photoshop CS3 using the HP utility, scanning in at 600dpi with descreening turned on. I also tried scanning straight from my scanner to a USB drive (it has a USB port). Through that method, it scans at 300dpi, and I have yet to find a way around it.
After comparing the results between the two different methods, I found the scan straight from the scanner to USB produced more "realistic" results. By realistic, I mean, more akin to what I'm actually putting on the scanner to scan. When scanning at 600dpi with descreening, I did indeed get a higher resolution file, though, there was more of an artificial "blur". When zooming both files to 100%, I was much happier with the latter method.
Granted, things are going to look rough as these are raw scans in the truest sense, in that, I'm not applying any cleanup (no contrast adjustments, no level adjustments, no dust/scratch filters or rubber stamping to fix defects), and most of these games have been a great deal of play over the years, and even though I've done my best to preserve everything, everything in my collection is "used" :D
Also, to be honest, the way I'm doing it saves me a "huge" amount of time, especially since I do these in the morning before I go to work. My scanner is downstairs and my home office with computer and my game collections are upstairs, and I can crank these scans out straight to a USB drive in relatively short order after bringing the games downstairs (only having to do some minor cropping after the fact). Doing it the Photoshop way, I found I had to put something on the glass, and then put some weights on it to keep it flat (as opposed to just holding it down when doing it via USB) so I could run upstairs to hit the scan button, and then waiting for the preview, and then manually having to tell it to do the 600dpi descreened scan (which takes a fair amount of time), waiting for it to be sent to Photoshop, and then cropping.
I'm not someone just to write something without some proof, so here's a sample of what I'm talking about:
http://www.ratigators.com/downloads/segacd/Shadow of the Beast II (USA) (Front) (300).jpg (http://www.ratigators.com/downloads/segacd/Shadow of the Beast II (USA) (Front) (300).jpg)
http://www.ratigators.com/downloads/segacd/Shadow of the Beast II (USA) (Front) (600).jpg (http://www.ratigators.com/downloads/segacd/Shadow of the Beast II (USA) (Front) (600).jpg)
I was much more satisfied with the crispness of the 300dpi scan, versus the larger and slightly blurry 600dpi scan (I'm looking at 100% size).
I did check out your scan, and by no means do I mean to come across crass, but where you see "smooth", I see "gaussian blur", in that, if I take my 300dpi scan and throw a .5 gaussian blur, I seem to get the same "smoothness" that I can see in a 600dpi scan. All in all, I know it comes down to personal preference.
I'm hopeful in that my raw scans can be cleaned up/touched up by whomever is making whatever use of these requests.
Now, with all of that said, there's no point in me scanning a bunch of artwork that won't do anyone any good, and if someone can find a hidden menu option in my scanner (or updated/hacked firmware) that will let me adjust dpi/descreening settings directly on the scanner when scanning straight to a USB drive, I'll be all for doing everything at anything.
-
Done and linked.
Thanks a million. I've been looking for a scan of that for ages. You should take some pictures of your collection for the photo gallery. I'd love to see what it all looks like.
Also, I noticed you have a misprinted Chu Chu Rocket. What exactly is wrong with it?
-
tsolfan,
Trust me when I say that I really appreciate the scans. I hope you understand that I was not trying complaining about your scans.. On the contrary, they are a lot better than some other raw files I've seen. I was just wondering why the scans looked quite the way they do.
Having said that, please keep up the work. we need all the scans we can get our hands on ;D ..
BTW. I already completed the Keio and Shadow SCD DVD covers. I'm gona be adding them to the site later this week.
Again, Thanks for your contributions tot he site!
-
I kinda see what Vt102 means tho. I just finished putting together a Clockwork Knight 2 cover with your scans, and I did end up with a nice end result but I also found that it took a little extra work to fix up. With 600dpi scans we have a bigger scan to work with which gives you more detail after youve touched up the scan before you resize it as where the 300dpi scans are not much bigger than the size of the templates we use. The blurring isnt much of an issue either because you can run a sharpen filter to take care of that.
But like Vt102 said, dont get me wrong because we really do appreciate your scans either way. Your a great resource for this project.
EDIT: Oh and Id like to request Darius Gaiden and Die Hard Arcade next please! :)
-
No offense taken guys, and I really do appreciate the feedback. I'm just releasing the best scans I can with the hardware and time that I have. The offer still stands, if someone can find a way to override the default 300dpi scan quality of my scanner when using the on-scanner menu to scan straight to a USB drive (there are all kinds of fax settings menus and advanced fax settings menus, but not a single scan settings menu, only scan destination menu), I'm all for cranking out 600dpi scans everytime :D
Concerning the Darius Gaiden and Die Hard Arcade scan requests, those are done and linked.

Also, I noticed you have a misprinted Chu Chu Rocket. What exactly is wrong with it?
The back insert was designed with both vector and raster based images. In the first pressing, the print that was used had horribly low resolution raster images, to where none of the screen shots were legible, and the Photoshop comp of the game characters was also very pixellated. Back when I did print design ages ago, lower resolution raster images were used in the design phase for speed, but swapped out prior to sending it out to the printer. My guess is, someone made a mistake and forgot to do the swap. Also, between the first and second pressing, they also changed the color orange for the KapuKapus (they went from a muted orange to a near neon orange). This color swap was done on both the back and front.
I did a quick comparison scan. To note, I had these both on the scanner glass at the same time for a reason, so you could see that it wasn't the scanner re-adjusting colors or resolution.
You can view the scan here (resized to 150dpi so you don't have to do a lot of scrolling to compare):

I got off work today a bit early, but getting things ready to head out of town for New Years, but I'll get to these when I get back (should be Sunday). Though, Iron Storm is one of the foil print Working Designs game, so, that may or may not turn out well, but I'll give it a try.

Could I now request Silver for Dreamcast? I think that'll then be it for me (no promises). Thanks! :D

I've scanned Lagoon and linked it in the original post. Also, I posted a list of what Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 NTSC-U games I have available to scan, as well as Nuon titles (the spiritual successor to the Atari Jaguar).
@comradesnarky
I've got Silver scanned, though, have to go run some errands this morning. I'll have it up here later today.
-
Are those SNES games NTSC-J too? If so, I'd love a scan of the japanese version of Super Ghouls N' Ghosts. I've never liked the US art and would love to make a custom with the japanese art.
nevermind, judging from your pics of your collection they're just US releases. You can freely ignore this.

As much as I despise doing 600dpi scans for the reasons made previously, I'll see what I can do ;) Fortunately, manuals don't require me to setup a bunch of weights on top of my scanner while I run upstairs to scan (back inserts that have never been taken out of the back case in 10+ years or actual boxes that have never been folded flat are another story entirely :)

Ontopic: Tsolfan could you please reupload Tokyo Extreme Racer's scan on 600dpi? to make a cover of the Highest quality ;)
I updated the zip file to include the 600dpi scan of the front cover.
Thank you so much, ill start working on a TXC cover as soon as i get my working Laptop back "wich suffered a terrible injury on new years eve ;)"

I can't believe no one has asked for it yet. But can you scan in Wipeout for the Saturn?

I don't have a problem scanning things if there's a need for a scan. Though, if someone has already done the work, unless there's a problem with it, I don't see a need to rescan something. It seems Giga Wing, Rayman 2, and Wild Metal already have scans here:

And all of the above mentioned games already have covers here:

Though, if I need to reproduce raw scans for NFL QB Club 2001, Quake 3, Sega Bass Fishing, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, just let me know.

Mostly done and linked. My boxed copies of Checkered Flag and Double Dragon V are still sealed, so I couldn't fold them flat, but the fronts and spine seemed to come across fairly clean. Though, the top and bottom have where the shrinkwrap "collected". Also, the back has the shrinkwrap seam and the clear tab for hanging the games. I can upload them if you absolutely need something, but hopefully someone else has the boxes they could scan. Here's an example:

Yes all of the covers are hosted on our site here, but I am looking to recreate the jewel case covers. I have roughly 60 dreamcast games, and I would rather reprint the 7 covers instead of 60-70 DVD sized cases
-
Thanks tsolfan! That'll do, even with the shirnk wrap they are still of good use. Theres nothing you cant fix with photoshop lol.

NFL QB Club 2001, Quake 3, Sega Bass Fishing, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 are all done and linked. As mentioned, the other games you requested already had raw scans, so I didn't rescan those.

Checkered Flag and Double Dragon V are both done and linked. Since I couldn't fold the boxes flat, I included 5 separate scans for each (Front, Back, Spine, Top and Bottom). When folded flat, I could get the spine in the back scan, and the top and bottom in the front scan, but this is the best I could do. As I mentioned previously, they are a bit of a mess with the light from the scanner reflecting all over the shrink wrap, but you said you were up to the challenge :)

Still taking requests? ;D

Still taking requests? ;D
Sure, I have the same amount of time I've always had in the mornings before work. I don't check all of the other threads in the forum all that much (which I guess I should since not everyone knows about this thread), but what people request, I'll always do my best to fill.

Check your PM's! ;D

Just wanted to mention that my Die Hard Arcade, Dark Savior and Legend of Oasis covers didnt pass approval. I tried my best to clean up the scans but they still didnt make it due to moire and blurryness. Id love to get those covers up on the site so if you ever have time to re-scan those 3 at 600dpi, Ill put them together again. Thanks! :)
-
I was out sick a few days, so I've got some catching up to do on scan/rescan requests. I've also gotten a few private messages for scans, but if everyone could just post to the thread, I think that's much easier so I don't get duplicate requests.
Here's my current punch list:
@BadChad
Sega Saturn
Dark Savior
Die Hard Arcade
Legend of Oasis
@irvgotti452
Atari Jaguar
Hover Strike: Unconquered Lands
Raiden
Supercross 3D
You also requested a rescan of Aliens Vs Predator, though, I don't think that's going to do much good. Of all of my Jaguar games, that got the most playtime, and checking the scans, I think that's as good as it's going to get from me. I suggest putting out a scan request for that one to find a copy in better condition. Also, a note, Supercross 3D is still sealed, as was a few of your previous requests. Blame this guy :)
http://shop.ebay.com/gameliquidation/m.html?_nkw=jaguar&_sacat=0&_odkw=&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313 (http://shop.ebay.com/gameliquidation/m.html?_nkw=jaguar&_sacat=0&_odkw=&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313)
He/She's been selling sealed Jaguar games for years, all of which I got for $4 a piece, or thereabouts. The trick is, he/she lists them one at a time, there's never a two copies of the same game listed at once, so if someone has already bid on it, I always just waited for the next go-round and wait it out.
@MarioMania
I checked your Sega CD requests, and they all have covers posted matching the retail (not custom art).
Concerning your Sega Saturn requests, some I've already filled for others, and quite a few are already on the site with retail art. Though, these are the titles I identified as missing (after checking the covers and raw scans) that I'll add to my queue:
Sega Saturn
Nightwarriors
Sega Ages
Street Fighter Collection

Hey, man. Just a small, tiny request, but, do you think you could scan Bug! for me? The current cover we have on the site looks like dookie. :-\

I could use just the cover of nights if you have the saturn case one.
(not the big box with 3d controller version)
Also I am looking for the pal panzer dragoon cover

Done and linked, with comments. Sega Ages is a Working Designs title, so everything is foil and embossed, which means, the scan is going to suck :) The silver ended up scanning as blue, and the gold ended up scanning as a dark brown, making the text on the back nearly unreadable. As for Street Fighter Collection, I'm getting this comment in before the calls come in for a re-scan :D Looking at the scan, it looked pretty bad, so I pulled the game back out and looked at the original art, and, the scan is an accurate representation of what I'm seeing with my own eyes. I'm not sure why the original art had such a moire pattern to begin with. For those without access to the original to see what I'm talking about, I took a quick photo:
As you can see from the photo, what you are getting in my scan is what you get with the original art. Though, I did a test print with my own scan, and it looks much better printed than on screen, so take that into consideration.
Check your PM's! ;D
Raiden and Hover Strike are both done and linked. I should be able to get to the sealed Supercross 3D tomorrow.

I'll do my best to get to these tomorrow as well. I haven't pulled these back out yet to check the original art again, but if it's the same situation as Street Fighter Collection, I can't guarantee you'll see better results.
Also, to any forum admin, it seems with adding the links to images, my initial post has exceeded the length limit. To make room, I deleted my N64 (for which there were no scans linked) and SNES (for which there were two scans linked) and Nuon (no scans linked). Is there any way to insert me 3 posts below my original? That way, I could leave my Sega CD in my original post, put Sega Saturn in the second, Dreamcast in the third, and then Jaguar, SNES, N64 and Nuon in the other.
If not possible, I'm open to ideas :) What may be easiest is to not list my complete collections and just link out to Wikipedia or something that has a list of what titles I have available.

Also, a quick thought. I know you mentioned your covers based on my scans were rejected due to moire, but, what are the thoughts/opinions from those doing the rejecting based on a moire guideline when what they are rejecting is actually represented in the original art (see my Street Fighter Collection photo sample)? After all, any scan I do is already a 3rd generation reproduction, with the first being the original source files sent to the printers, the second being the print that I'm scanning, and of course, the 3rd being my scan itself. So, my scans are always going to pick up the degradation of the original art resulting from the printing process, because, let's not kid ourselves, these things are Giclée prints :D

Thanks a lot for the Bug scan, man! It's ironic that the only Jaguar game you don't have a box for is Cybermorph... I recently bought someone's Jaguar collection, if included the boxes for about 20 games, and the only one without a box was Cybermorph. Go figure. :D

Could it be that, because Cypermorph was only sold packed with Jaguar that the cover does not excist? ::)
Least to my knowledge it never came in a box.

DAMN YOU WERE RIGHT.
As a punishment to my ignorance I went to ebay and bought boxed copy, will scan it when arrives. ;D
This was cheapest, 8 left to sell, if you want to biy too:

You can buy just the box from this eBay seller (Atari Sales & Service):
http://shop.ebay.com/myatari/m.html?_nkw=atari+jaguar&_sacat=0&_odkw=&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313
Amongst other things (replacement white box inserts, the hologram stickers used on the front, etc).
Since my copy was the pack-in game included with my Jaguar that didn't come with a box originally, I wasn't hard pressed to try and track one down.

*facepalm* im gonna go broke soon :-X

Holy crap, how cool is that!! I just bought 20 of those hologram stickers from that guy. I'm gonna put them in the proper place on all the UGC Jaguar covers I print out! ;D Thanks for the recommendation, man!
EDIT: Dang, I shouldn't have started thinking about my Jaguar collection. You guys just made me buy a NIB Tempest 2000 with the Soundtrack included. Oh, how I hate eBay.... :-X

Thanks for the scan but unfortunately its too bad of quality :'(
I gotta have a 600 dpi scan of the original manual, with descreen on probably best to have a flatbed scanner then it needs to be saved as the highest quality jpg
I'm trying to understand what you are doing, from your one post it sounds like these are scans of printed versions? It looks like a scan of a low dpi print on standard paper.
Do you have access to the originals?
Thanks anyways though :) and nice collection
-

Yeah, the Bug! scans had low dpi when I checked back and looked closer at them. Nevertheless, I was able to make a retail cover for Bug! that far surpasses the current one on the website. I printed it out and it looks great. So, I'm satisfied! Thanks a lot! ;D

These are the best scans I can get with the equipment I have, and these are scans of the original inserts. The comment I made concerning degradation was that, in fact, what we are all scanning are factory prints from the original artwork by the original designers, so any and all scans I make (and anyone makes) are all going to have the natural imperfections introduced during the original printing process. The only way to do better is to get someone at Sega/Nintendo/etc to send us the original files :)
The photo of the Street Fighter Collection I posted was a crop at 100% zoom. Here was the original photo:
When I look at my scans, and I look at my originals, they look the same to me. Yes, I could scan at an even higher DPI, though, in my opinion, I end up with a larger blurrier file, rather than a crisp true representation of the original artwork (I scan at 300dpi). Granted, my scans may not look smooth when zoomed at 100% on a computer, but, again, when I look at the original art up close prior to scanning, I see the same imperfections. As mentioned earlier, when I did a test print of my Street Fighter scan, it looked accurate when stacked against the original.
I printed it out and it looks great. So, I'm satisfied! Thanks a lot! ;D
I rest my case :D
-
oh ok sorry I misunderstood that earlier post. I thought you were saying something else.
hmm I wonder what the problem is, what kind of scanner do you have?
Is it a flatbed scanner?
Do you have an option for descreen at all with your scanner software?
I could scan the nights box i have (3dcontroller version but 95% same cover) at 300 dpi and show you what it looks like, I have a flatbed cheap canon scaner from like 1999. I'll take a closer look tomorrow and see if I can see a big difference between the 2.
It just seems like you should be getting much better quality, I wonder why they are coming out so strange?
lol @ not trusting Stenchler
Edit ------heres a shot I put my unaltered raw scan at the bottom (300dpi) the 2 problems with yours are the edges are jittery and there is a weird rough texture over the whole thing (ignore the color difference thats not an issue) (these are not resized)
The rough texture is really evident in the light corona behind the head. Its hard to tell if its moire or some sort of scanner problem since it kind of goes with the jitter edges??
-
Yeah ekto you're right. I allready checked some saturn covers made with tsolfans scans and unfortunately they didn't pass quality control. There were some strange artifacts on them asnd moire and jittery stuff all over. So I think that it could be a scanner problem.
-

I have a HP C309a flatbed scanner, and I scan directly from the scanner (in that, I use a USB flash drive in the front USB port and scan using the built in scanner menus).
Just for fun, I got my Nights back out, and put the instruction manual back on the scanner, and used Photoshop CS3 and the HP scanner plugin, scanned at 600dpi with the descreen option turned on. You can view the full scan here:
http://www.ratigators.com/downloads/saturn/Nights (USA) (Front) (600).jpg (http://www.ratigators.com/downloads/saturn/Nights (USA) (Front) (600).jpg)
I took a sample of your area of concern at 100% zoom and you can see that here below:
(http://www.ratigators.com/downloads/saturn/Nights (USA) (Sample).jpg)
I'll be the first to agree that it does not look as smooth as the sample you provided from your scanner. Though, your sample looks to be from a completely different source, and again, I fall back to the same argument, that what I'm seeing in my scans are what I'm seeing with my own eyes looking at the original extremely up close, which is the natural effect of the original halftone printing process:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halftone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halftone)
More than likely, the huge differences we are seeing in your scan versus my scan is that, whatever you are scanning was perhaps originally printed using an entirely different printing process.
I've said this before earlier in this thread, and that is, I'm not out to purposefully flood this project with a bunch of bad scans. I'm scanning what I have when requested with the equipment that I have, and at the end of the day, the results I'm seeing are indicative of what I'm seeing in the original artwork, else I wouldn't even bother taking the time to scan/upload anything and waste my time and your time. Maybe my eyesight's just too good :)
I'm going to be hard pressed to find a way to make my scanner make something look better than the original. The only "fix" I can think of would be to get crazy with some blur to attempt to mask the original halftone artifacts, though, I'm not a huge fan of that.
Feel free to down-rank this thread into oblivion and re-title it as "Games Available to Scan as an Absolute Last Resort" :D
@BadChad
Let me know if you still want me to bother with your scans, because from the looks of things, it will probably still get rejected :)
-
Also, here's another thought. Again, I keep harping on the fact that my scanner is producing exactly what I'm seeing with my own eyes looking at the original. Could it be that perhaps Sega just simply half-assed it when it came to sending all of their art to the printers for Sega Saturn games?
For example, here's a random scan I pulled from the Raw Cover Scans link on the left for a game I scanned that BadChad mentioned got rejected. For reference, this is not my scan:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/akrate69.retail.raw_saturn_legendoasis_front.jpg (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/akrate69.retail.raw_saturn_legendoasis_front.jpg)
Here's another. Again, another random raw scan I pulled, scanned by someone else, not me:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/mazut.retail.raw_saturn_saturn_street_figter_alpha_2_front.jpg (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/mazut.retail.raw_saturn_saturn_street_figter_alpha_2_front.jpg)
And another:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/JSF%20James.retail.raw_saturn_super_puzzle_fighter_2_turbo_bookfront_600dpi.jpg (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/JSF%20James.retail.raw_saturn_super_puzzle_fighter_2_turbo_bookfront_600dpi.jpg)
And another:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/Gholla20.retail.raw_saturn_bighurtlfrontnew.jpg (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/Gholla20.retail.raw_saturn_bighurtlfrontnew.jpg)
And one more:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/dmc1974.retail.raw_saturn_panzeerdragoon_front.jpg (http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/raw/Sega%20-%20Saturn/dmc1974.retail.raw_saturn_panzeerdragoon_front.jpg)
All different games, all different users doing the scans, and I can only assume, all different scanners.
Which would mean, regardless of how many times I try to scan these, on any scanner, there's no way to get around the fact that the original art sucked to begin with :)
As they always say, garbage in, garbage out :D
-
Here is your die hard and then mine. Like i said before my scanner is over 10 years old, it a Canon CanoScan N650U
I'll agree many of those scans by other people are not that great maybe they forgot descreen or something.
Im not trying to disrespect you or nothing I just think there is something wrong with your scanner, it could be a setting, or maybe its not working correctly, or the thing may just be junk machine.
Do you have access to another scanner like a siblings or friends to test it out?
(again this is a raw scan 300 dpi to match yours with no altering in photoshop)

No disrespect felt, trust me :)
Tell me what you think about this (my original on top, your's in the middle, and my new one on the bottom):
Seems I can get mine to look exactly like yours. No rescan, or anything. I just added a Photoshop Gaussian Blur at 1.0, and I get exactly what you get.
As I mentioned previously, I can scan at a higher DPI, but the result is just a larger file with more artificial blur to make up for the resolution the original art doesn't have.
At the end of the day, I'd rather have a scan (and scanner) that's on the sharp side (and I know everyone is probably tired of hearing me say this, but what I see in my scans are what I see when I look closely at the original art :)), because it's easy to add blur, not so easy to get rid of it.
-
I'd say the last picture actually looks bit better/sharper than the second last.
-
I'd say the last picture actually looks bit better/sharper than the second last.
Really?.. look at the planet and the skyline behind the fox symbol
to me its starting to wash out it does look close in a way but now we are dealing with a low quality jpg that's been compressed twice I think if I started with both original raw copy's and started sharpening and adding contrast etc mine would look a lot better.
on a side note I like starting with 600 dpi, yes it will have more noticeable dots at 100% but when you clean it up at 600 then re-size it, it seems to hide more imperfections and look all around better less moire etc.
I still think pre photoshop your scans should be coming out better.
-

100% agreed!
-

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Pre-Photoshop, I expect my scans to look like the original art in its truest sense. When I scan, I scan with no options (no descreening, no color adjustment, no contrast adjustment, etc). That way, someone creating any art from my files isn't stuck with any post-processing I did in advanced that they have to try and undo. So, when I scan something that has a halftone print pattern visible, as you can see in the photo I took with a digital camera (which did a halfway decent job masking it with the JPG compression and probably my own motion blur taking the photo):
100% zoom:
I expect to see that in the scan (and I did).
I've never set out to provide perfect art with every bit of dust and scratches cleaned up. I'm scanning to provide truly raw files for someone to do their own post-processing and cleanup. So, if someone is expecting to take any file I scan and turn right around and drop it into a cover, that's probably never going to happen, unless you want something that looks identical to what I scanned :D

I have these scanned. I'll get them linked up tomorrow morning before work.

You did a fantastic job. I'm not up for scanning something where there's already a cover on the site with the retail art, so I wasn't planning on taking the time to scan these, as at first glance, your covers were identical to what I remember the original art looking like. It wasn't until I did a double take did I notice the differences (like on Fatal Fury where the original art had Duck King on the back, and your cover has Mai as well as different screenshots, and on Samurai Shodown the different screenshots on the back, and the smaller and non-overlapping logo on the front on your custom art).
Though, it surprised me how blurry the original artwork was for the Samurai Shodown cover (the original, not your cover). The logos were all nice and crisp, though, the Haohmaru artwork by Shinkiro was way out of focus (perhaps too much descreening when JVC scanned the art ;)), so your custom cover actually improved upon that.

If you're still around, I'd kill for Silent Scope and Street Fighter III: Double Impact, please!

I'm still around. I get emailed when there is a reply to this thread, and that's when I know to check back.
I'll get these both scanned tomorrow morning.

If you're still around, I'd kill for Silent Scope and Street Fighter III: Double Impact, please!
Done and linked. As has been previously discussed ad nauseum, my scanner is incredibly sharp, meaning you are getting the all of the detail that a halftone print produces when incredibly zoomed in, so blur to your liking (a 1.0 gaussian blur seems to be in line with scans others are producing).
Now that you have your scans, try not to kill anything :)
Also, I updated the original post to include Winter Heat for Sega Saturn which I recently acquired (leaving only the Daytona USA Netlink mail in offer as the only US Saturn game I'm missing, though, it used the same inserts as Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition, so there wouldn't be anything new to scan).

Thank you sir! This board really needs some kind of a rep system.

Could you scan the manual (just the front not all the pages) and back insert of Panzer Dragoon Saga? I have the manual but my scanner doesn't support descreen. I know the ways of removing it but it doesn't come out as good as the descreened RAWS from here.
Thank you.

Done and linked. I included two versions, the raw scan and one with a 1.0 Gaussian Blur (which seems to be in line with the scans others are producing).
Also, I might have to take a brief hiatus on this thread while I focus on my Sega Saturn instruction scan thread (linked in my signature).

Thank you TSOLfan, VERY much appreciated! Oh and if you ever score that Saturn Bomberman back insert please post it somewhere's because I'm in the same boat as you, I have the manual & disc, but no back insert. Thanks again for the PDS scans!
-
I know you said you're taking a break from the requests which is cool but when you get a chance could you scan (front of manual and back insert) Sega Touring Car Championship, Rampage World Tour, Rayman, Highway 2000, Gun Griffin, Dragon Force, Contra Legacy of War, Burning Rangers, Battlesport, Bust A Move 3, Steep Slope Sliders, Virtua Fighter Remix (longbox), Sky Target, Decathlete, & Blazing Dragons? I just scored all those games (disc only bummer) for $10 at my local pawn shop.
Whenever you can get around to these thank you!

My single spine will no longer be blank until I've sucked it up and bought duplicate copy to swipe a back insert (and then flip to re-coup a majority of my cost).
You, sir, are fantastic.

Has that been retouched?.. I've never seen a scan so clean!
WOW!!!!!
-
Yes, it was retouched. That particular scan came because a European collector I work with wanted a Saturn Bomberman back insert. So I bought a sealed Bomberman game on eBay, scanned it, sent the back to Europe, and resold the game with a retouched photo quality back insert. The ebay listing clearly identified the back insert as a reproduction. It was a pain in the butt, but I got some good scans out of it and my European friend's collection is now U.S. complete. :)
Retouching Saturn cover scans has become a hobby of mine for some reason. My goal is to get all of them done at 300 dpi. At this point, I have done all of the U.S. ones at one resolution or another, and some have been redone several times. My earlier efforts weren't so good, so some of them are slated for redos when I get suitable scans. Front covers usually take me 2-3 hours to clean up and back covers are on the order of an hour, except that I spent more time with Bomberman because I was reselling it and the game is so special.

Over @ ratigators.com (http://www.ratigators.com), I've got 7 of these done and linked, as it concerns the front and the entire manuals. In the next few days, there will be a few more from your wish list. I'll eventually circle back around and look at the back inserts. Though, a few of these already have covers on the site here using the retail art (such as Burning Rangers, Bust a Move 3, and Virtua Fighter Remix). I had originally intended this thread to be a request thread for where there wasn't yet a cover with NTSC-U retail art and scans of retail art were still needed. So, I'll focus on the ones that aren't already up on the site in some fashion when I do these.
-
TSOLfan, Burning Rangers & Bust A Move 3 retail in the Saturn section here are unacceptable, they're way too low rez, blurry mess. How they even made it on this site is beyond me. Saturn master VT has already done Virtua Fighter Remix so that 1 isnt needed. Again, thanks for contributing, take your time, theres no rush :)

Huh, well, that's what I get for just looking at the thumbnails :) As a friendly reminder, all of my scans are raw and crazy sharp (so you visibly see the negative side effects of the actual original printing process), so I leave it up to those that download anything to soften it to their liking (a 1.0 gaussian blur, or even a bit less, is on par with any descreening process). I'm of the mindset that it's easy enough to soften/blur, much harder to go to other way.

Thanks again TSOLFAN, I hope the upload section gets fixed soon so your scans can be put in the RAW section for everybody, that or VT102 gets a hold of them and does some covers since he's the Saturn & Sega CD Master on here. Again thanks for sharing your scans :)

Wow! Thanks for providing such a great service! I"ve been trying to find some high quality saturn scans to print out for holes in my collection, and I found your thread. If you have a chance I would like to request for Saturn: Albert Odyssey, Guardian Heroes, and Panzer Dragoon Zwei. I have a bunch of ps1, ps2, and some pc engine / Turbografx scans I could offer anyone, to give back to the community. Anyway, thanks again!

You'll notice Steep Slope Sliders is missing. If you've been following my Sega Saturn instruction scan thread, you'll notice I mentioned that one had water damage. You can grab the cover from ratigators.com (http://ratigators.com), though, the back insert is stuck to the back of the case, so I can't remove it without damaging it (though, it looks perfect :)). As I mentioned in my scan thread, I have eBay Saved Searches setup, so once a reasonably priced replacement pops up, assuming I win it, I'll replace the manual scan, and I'll also get the back insert scanned for you.

I checked the site, and there are already covers posted for all three of your requests. I downloaded them and the quality looks good. I originally created this thread is to request scans for games for which there aren't already covers, or for covers that need re-scanned art. I'd be more than happy to re-scan the back inserts if there's a definite need (you can actually grab the front scans, as well as every page of the manual on my ratigators.com (http://ratigators.com) site).
Also, I know I mentioned taking a bit of a hiatus from this thread for a while to focus on instruction scans, I'll try to actually do that this time :) In a week or so, I'm going to try and start up Dreamcast instruction scans along side my currently running Sega Saturn instruction scans. I've got a quite a few sealed copies of games on either end of the alphabet, so I'm sourcing some replacements, and once I have those, I'll get started (as I don't want to start it up, and keep skipping games right from the start).
-
Thanks for the info! I actually do need the back inserts for all three, The ones that I have found (can't remember if on this site or another) all have resolutions too low so when I print them they are blurry. One Guardian heroes back insert ended up being too wide for my saturn cd case (?) If you did rescan/up the ones mentioned I would appreciate it, but if you want to take some time off from saturn games I understand completely. There might be some other raw scans of these games floating around here :)
-
Hey can someone put Shanghai Triple Threat for the Sega Saturn cover on here please? I need the front back and side of it if possible. Thank you :)

You can grab the manual scan (which includes the front cover scan) at ratigators.com (http://ratigators.com) where I've been posting all of my manual scans. I'm well into my 3250 total scans for all of the manual pages, and eventually, I'll come back around and scan individual back inserts that have been requested (if someone hasn't beat me to it) before jumping into Dreamcast manual scans (which I'm targeting the end of the month to start).
-
unrealfan89 and incrediblehark, I'll be finishing up Sega Saturn manual scans tomorrow, so I'll get these requests completed for both of you this week if either of you haven't already found them elsewhere.
Saturn Genesis, I picked up a replacement Steep Slope Sliders when doing manual scans, so I have a back insert now that I can actually get out of the case, so I'll get that scanned in this week as well.

Scanned and linked as well.

Steep Slope Sliders is the only one I had left for you (since my original copy had a damaged rear insert), and I've got my replacement scanned and linked.
As far as I know, that catches me up with requests. I'm in the middle of scanning all of my Sega Dreamcast manuals now, so I'll continue to monitor this thread, but it may take me a while to fill any requests.
-
Since I've pretty much closed the door on manual scans over here:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=6791.0
I'm coming back to a few systems to do pickups on back insert scans. I did a trial run this morning on Sega Saturn, and I estimate I can knock out about 10-20 of these a morning. I uploaded 3D Baseball through Baku Baku. These are in the same folders as the manual scans I've already finished:
http://www.ratigators.com/
I don't have time this morning to re-upload the zip files, so just know, if you currently download the zip files, you'll still just get the manual scans.
My goal is to have Sega Saturn back inserts wrapped up by the end of the month. I'll post in this thread when I do another batch of uploads, as I can't guarantee I'll be able to do a batch every day consistently.
-
Back inserts for Bases Loaded '96 through Breakpoint Tennis have been uploaded (15 games).
-
Back inserts for Bubble Bobble: Featuring Rainbow Islands through Darius Gaiden have been uploaded (27 games).
-
Back inserts for Dark Legend through Dragon Heart: Fire and Steel have been uploaded (11 games). I had to skip Doom, as apparently, my back insert is glued in the case, and I can't remove it without damaging it. I'll keep an eye out for a cheap second copy/back insert only.
-
Back inserts for Duke Nukem 3D through Highway 2000 have been uploaded (26 games). My F1 Challenge apparently had a cutout UPC, though, I scanned it in anyways and added it on the "to be replaced" list. Scanning always somehow ends up costing me money :)
-
I know I just sort of dropped this Sega Saturn back insert project, though, had to go out of town for work, and since getting back, things have just been crazy busy (end of the year is always busy). My goal is to cross this off my list this year.
-
I uploaded The Horde through NBA Live '98 (42 games). My Last Bronx had a cutout UPC, though, I scanned it in anyways and I'll get that replaced sometime in the future. That leaves me with 111 more back inserts to scan.
Also, when I was cleaning off my flash drive I scan directly to, I had this on here. Not sure if anybody wants it or needs it, but I scanned it as a test, so I thought I'd might as well share it:
Donald no Obake Taiji (JAP)
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?2xee5an1tf92u#0,2
Unlike the USA Sega Pico games that simply came in cardboard boxes, the JAP versions came in these huge oversized clamshell cases with sleeves. It takes up a ton of room, so I could only imagine what a full set would look like on a shelf (there were 296 JAP releases, compared to 20 USA releases).
-
Just finished uploading The Need For Speed through Sonic 3D Blast (54 games).
-
Just uploaded the back inserts for Sonic Jam through Virtua Cop (26 games). I had to skip True Pinball, because just like Doom, the back insert of my copy is stuck in the case, so I've added it to the list of eventual replacements.
-
Wrapped up my back insert scanning and uploaded Virtua Cop 2 through X-Men Children of the Atom (30 games). I also scanned in the jewel case cover and back insert for the Sega Rally and Virtual On Netlink editions. The front insert was just a single sided single piece for both.
Unless someone notices something I didn't, once I get replacements for Doom and True Pinball that I couldn't scan, and then inserts without UPCs cutout for F1 Challenge and Last Bronx, that should be it.
Also, it's my understanding the replacement case project for Dreamcast is already complete, though, if there's interest in me doing back insert scans for all of the Dreamcast titles, let me know.
-
I have copies of F1 Challenge and Last Bronx in the mail, so once they arrive, I'll replace the back insert scans.
-
If there's interest in more of these, let me know (there's not even a category here for them):
Garou Densetsu Shukumei no Tatakai (JAP)

Just realized the back cover scans are in the files w/ the manual scans, was looking for those lol
The work you have been putting in on this tho is awesome, I know a few manual cover scans I have gotten from you already.
Anything I can do to assist let me know

The work you have been putting in on this tho is awesome, I know a few manual cover scans I have gotten from you already.

Yea, originally, I was doing manual scans only. Then when I started Sega Master System, if I only did the manuals, you'd miss the front artwork that you were getting with the SCD/SAT/DC manuals, and here on this site, most games were missing or missing the USA art, so I took out all of the sleeves and scanned them in. But, then I had a disconnect where I now had back artwork for Sega Master System games, but nothing else. So, I started with the first system I started with originally and also the one missing the most covers here, which was the Saturn.
Downside is, the back inserts aren't in the zip files, as they are still "manual only".
I'll eventually get to Dreamcast and Sega CD, though, Sega CD will be a bit different, as unlike Saturn or Dreamcast where it's back inserts across the board, there's quite a few case types (cardboard, jewel, digipak, cardboard clamshell, and the huge Lethal Enforcers boxset which I have no good way to scan).
-
I have copies of F1 Challenge and Last Bronx in the mail, so once they arrive, I'll replace the back insert scans.
Just got around to scanning and uploading these replacements. Also, my replacement copy of Doom also arrived so that was scanned and uploaded as well. That just leaves True Pinball as the last Sega Saturn rear insert I need to scan that's still stuck inside the case.
-
True Pinball showed up yesterday, so I scanned in the back insert, so that wraps up every single Sega Saturn game.
Though, that did remind me that my original True Pinball manual was in awful shape, so I'll scan in this new one when I get a chance and replace the scans.
-
Never actually posted an update here to mention that I did replace the True Pinball scans, but yea, I did :)
I've started on Sega Dreamcast rear inserts. I'm pretty sure there are already covers for every game (I know I contributed scans for those that were missing), but I still think they are worth scanning for anyone that wants a replacement for a jewel case and not a DVD cover. Though, it will be slow going with the limited time I have these days to scan. They are all double sided (which was always cool looking), so it takes twice as long to scan and twice as long to rotate/crop/save, and in the instances of multi disc games, it takes even longer as there are multiple inserts for each section of the case.
I've got all numbered games and games that start with "A" complete. Alone in the Dark is an example of a multi disc game just as a FYI.
http://www.ratigators.com/
As I did with Sega Saturn, I'll post in this thread when I upload a new batch.
-
My son was playing with these the other day, which reminded me that I even had them, so I went ahead and scanned them all in:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=VMLABSNUON
-
And we're back to the regularly scheduled program.
For those that didn't happen to visit ratigators.com yesterday, all of the Sega console links redirected instead to Nintendo consoles, each with a scan of a Mario manual. Here's the links for those that missed them:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=NINTENDOENTERTAINMENTSYSTEM
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=NINTENDOSUPERNINTENDO
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=NINTENDO64

http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=NINTENDOWII
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=NINTENDOWIIU
Yea, I could have spent the time it took to scan those in to tag more Dreamcast back inserts, but sometimes I take a break to amuse myself. Those will stick around permantely, and I'll eventually get around to scanning my manuals for those systems (none of which are complete, but my personal "best of" collections).
Also, while on the topic of other non-linked links, here are two more:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=VMLABSNUON
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=SNKNEOGEO
On the Neo Geo titles, I have one game in the mail (Real Bout Special), and 5 more on my WTB list (the last in each of the series I own) that I'll get around to eventually.
-
What system is the "VMLABSNUON" link?
-
What system is the "VMLABSNUON" link?
The NUON by VM Labs :)
It was a great idea, though, poorly implemented. The idea was, build a game system almost as a system on a chip, and offer it to DVD player manufacturers. So, just as you could find DVD players with or without progressive scan (at least back in the day), the same would be said about NUON, a DVD player with or without. Basically, the inverse of a game console that played DVDs, you'd have DVD players that played games.
Only two companies ever manufactured DVD players with a NUON chipset, and that was Samsung and Toshiba. There were even a few DVD movies released that had extra features for NUON capable DVD players.
In some ways, it was the Atari Jaguar 2.0, in that Jeff Minter built a new VLM for it when used to playback music (as he did for the Jaguar CD), and it even saw a release of Tempest game and a beta of an Iron Solder game.
I picked one up when it was released for no other reason than to pick up a copy of Tempest 3000 to go along with it.
-
Dreamcast back inserts have been uploaded for games starting with B and C (20 games, 40 scans).
-
Also uploaded a new Super Nintendo manual by request:

I also added a quick way to get scans of my "OTHER" non-Sega systems. Just click the right quote in the upper left of the Ratigators UI to toggle the system list.
-
Real Bout Special for Neo Geo has been scanned (which finishes off the Real Bout series), and I've got 2 more Neo Geo AES titles in the mail (Art of Fighting 3 and World Heroes Perfect, which finishes off those series in my AES collection) that I'll scan in once they arrive:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?m=OTHER&c=SNKNEOGEO
-
Art of Fighting 3 arrived, and it's been scanned and uploaded.
-
World Heroes Perfect took a bit longer than expected to arrive, though, it finally did, so it's been scanned and uploaded.
I also got a deal on a Kizuna Encounter conversion, a game I wasn't really looking for, but a deal that was too good to pass up, and it showed up as well, and also has been scanned and uploaded.
-
I have a family member that's been picking up every Wii U Virtual Console Super Nintendo game released, and thus far, I've owned physical copies of every single one of them, so I went ahead and got those scanned in and uploaded.
I didn't check to see if these scans were already available elsewhere (I'm sure someone, somewhere, had already scanned in Super Metroid at least).
As I (think I) mentioned before, I'll eventually get around to scanning in my Nintendo collections, which are primarily just the Nintendo released titles and my personal favorites (sans most RPGs, my brother was always the one that picked those up, but I own a few).
-
Also, uploaded Sega Dreamcast front and back insert scans for all games starting with "D".
Since I'm slow going on getting my full set of these scanned, if anyone has a specific title they are waiting on or anything so they can reprint a replacement for their own jewel case, just let me know.
-
Sega Dreamcast back inserts front and back scans for E through H have all been uploaded, so I'm just about a third of the way through the full set.
-
With today's Killer Instinct Xbox One announcement, I scanned in and uploaded the Killer Instinct Super Nintendo manual as well as the Killer Instinct Gold Nintendo 64 manual (along with the Quick Reference Card) as well as this here just for fun:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=MAGAZINES
First appearance of Killer Instinct in Nintendo Power (from what I recall), pulled from my Killer Instinct clippings archives (from when Cinder was still called Meltdown). In high school, as the next big fighting game was in arcades, I kept a "clippings" archive. I had one for the first 3 Mortal Kombat games and Killer Instinct, as well as the Project Reality (that then became the Ultra 64 that then became the Nintendo 64, all just for Killer Instinct). What's hilarious is that I found the work in progress move list my friend and I were working on when Mortal Kombat II was first released in arcades (the first revision), from when the machine was so crowded, you could barely get close to it (so our names weren't even entirely accurate), and everyone had their own ideas as to what the moves actually were.
In my Killer Instinct archive, I also had my letters I received back from Nintendo. When EGM had rumors that the Ultra 64 wasn't going to hit its release date, I wrote a "concerned" letter to Nintendo, given that Killer Instinct was supposed to launch with it (so said the promo in the arcade attract mode). I received a great letter back, with Nintendo blasting EGM. Oddly enough, EGM was right, the Ultra 64 didn't launch as planned. Return address censored, I don't live there anymore, but my dad still does :)
So, I sent a friendly follow up letter, to which Nintendo confirmed the delayed launch date, and was kind enough to give me their list of scheduled games to be released (some of which were never realised, oddly enough):
That's enough nostalgia for now. Oh, and I had a gentlemen's agreement with my brother, in that, if Microsoft announced Killer Instinct for the Xbox One, that I'd put down a day one pre-order, which I did (at $500, still cheaper than what I paid for either of my Killer Instinct 1 and 2 cabinets :)
-
very nice site that you've made for SEGA content. Thanks for sharing manuals. You're awesome.
I think that it is amazing how loyal SEGA fans are to the system and its games. I can find so many scans of SEGA games and manuals and very little for SNES. I even found a Thomas the Tank Engine box scan. I think that it proves a point: SEGA has better fans.
Anyway, Thank you for the manuals. The site is nice.
-
Added a bunch of Super Nintendo manual scans and a few Nintendo 64 manual scans. My brother dropped off a bunch of loose games for me to sell which were sold to go towards picking up more Genesis and Game Gear manuals, so I scanned what manuals I had from my own personal Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 game collections in case the buyer's wanted free manual copies. Since I was already pulling quite a few Super Nintendo manuals (he dropped off more SNES games than N64), I simply started going A through Z after tagging the games for sale. I've gotten through L, along with the other games in the rest of the alphabet that were for sale. I'll eventually do the rest of my Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 collections.
Also, I uploaded insert and manual scans for Garou: Mark of the Wolves for the Neo Geo AES (big fan of the insert art, though, prefer how the Dreamcast port's manual dedicated a full page for every character), which was my own birthday gift to myself, which leaves one Neo Geo game on my personal wish list (Samurai Spirits Zero Special, preferably the unfixed version).
-
Thank You for the scans. very nice site.
I am tired but I do not see snes Earthworm Jim pages 19 and 20. Are the pages missing from the manual?
also, I hate to ask but do you have the box? I have searched everywhere for scans of this box with no luck.
I really like the site. very good job.
edit: i am sleepy. i forgot to specify Earthworm Jim. i've edited the original post. sorry

I do skip a page every once and a while, and people are usually quick to let me know, so thanks for that. I've got it scanned and uploaded.
As for the box, I'll see what I can do, though, this box is from the era when I was treating my games like I treated my vinyl, in that, I was leaving the shrinkwrap on them and simply slicing open one side of the shrinkwrap so I could get the game and manual out and whatnot. I did notice there's already a cover here on the site (a vertical and a retail). I didn't download either of them, though.
-
Thank You for adding the missing pages. Very nice scans.
I would like to have raw scans of the box but if it's too much of a bother, then don't worry about it. I appreciate any effort.
I really like your site. Thanks again...

This reminded me that I recall that byuu was scanning all things SNES, though, hadn't released anything yet from what I recall, so I thought to check, and found and read this part:
http://byuu.org/snes/preservation/
"I have completed this set, with the exception that I was unable to scan the manuals due to running out of time and money. However, I have successfully imaged every cartridge and its PCB layout; and scanned every box, cartridge, and PCB."
That sucks about the manuals (I don't ever plan to build a full SNES set, I'm just scanning my personal "best of" collection), though, good news on the boxes, but I still don't see anywhere to view/download them.
-
Also I uploaded the scans for both Super Nintendo Mechwarrior games. The first game is only the second ever "sideways" manual I've seen (the other being Shadow Squadron for Sega 32X), though, this one was fully committed and did a sideways front cover as well (Shadow Squadron didn't, only the interior pages).
-
Uploaded a full set of Super Nintendo Mortal Kombat game manuals.
I've got 10 or so Super Nintendo manuals left to scan, and then I'll move on to my Nintendo 64 game collection and then get back on Sega Game Gear and Sega Genesis.
-
Also, I currently have a stash of over 100 unique Sega Game Gear games (almost half a complete set), and thought about scanning in all of the labels, though, haven't found a great way to do it. Simply throwing them on the scanner results in this:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2823655/My%20Pictures/_SegaGameGear/test.jpg
Because of the huge "grip" at the top of the cart.
I'm trying to get something as good as this:
http://info.sonicretro.org/File:Sth_gg_us_cart.jpg
I'm thinking my only option is to setup my camera on my tripod and point it straight down and snap some photos with the remote trigger (to prevent camera shake).
Anyone with any ideas better than that one?
-
I think digi-camera, is going to be the only answer. on a white background and good ambient lighting, but no direct lighting, to avoid glare
-

Yeah, I've got the right gear (and my sister-in-law is a professional photographer, and I might even be able to bum her mini-cyclo :)
Just something else I've added to my never-ending to-do list.
-
Finished scanning in my Super Nintendo collection, minus 2 games. When pulling the Super Off Road manual from the game on the shelf, I realized that the manual was an odd size. Upon closer inspection, it's actually the manual for the NES game, not the SNES game. I never noticed that before. Also, when I went to pull the Tetris 2 manual, it wasn't in the game, and I've no clue where it could have ended up unless it was simply lost years ago when someone borrowed the game (these days, I let carts go loose, and discs go in generic jewel cases, and friends can just pull manuals online if they want them).
I'll check around from time to time to see if I can find some cheap replacement manuals for both of those.
-
Transitioned back to scanning Sega Dreamcast 2-sided back inserts. I had finished A through H, and then drifted to scanning other things. Though, spent some time this weekend and got the rest of the USA collection scanned in. So far, I've got I through Q rotated/cropped/matched/saved/renamed, with R through Z still on my flash drive, which I should be able to knock out this week.
Next on my list is Sega CD back inserts, with Saturn already done, and Dreamcast just about, figured I'd go ahead and do these, just for my own personal backups. I'll have to take a photo of Lethal Enforcers, as my scanner isn't big enough to handle it.
-
Finished up R though Z, so that wraps up all of the NTSC-U Sega Dreamcast back inserts.
As always, if I screwed something up, let me know.
On to Sega CD back inserts, and then back to scanning Game Gear and then Genesis manuals.
-
Again, understand Sega CD games all have covers these days, but still scanning my own inserts for my own personal backups.
I finished and uploaded A through G, all jewel case games and CD digipacks (such as Colors of Modern Rock) and whatnot, only skipping the original classic cardboard games, which I'll come back around and tag when the low hanging fruit is out of the way. Hot Hits/Rock Painting never had a manual, but I'll still scan it anyways.
-
Its not said enough; you're awesone tsolfan! Appreciate all your hard work :)
-
Sega CD back inserts for H through Z have been uploaded. Same as before, all jewel case games and cardboard clamshell games and cardboard digipacks were done, and I'll come back around and tag the original cardboard releases.
I also uploaded a passable photo of the Lethal Enforcers box. I'll try to snap a better one when I have more time.
-
Its not said enough; you're awesone tsolfan! Appreciate all your hard work :)
Thanks for the compliments.
I'm simply of the mindset that there's no point building all of these complete sets over the years unless I'm going to do something with them (other than shelf or store them, as there's no time for even me, my wife or my kids to play all of them, and even with "loaner" systems of each "retro" console, no other friends or family ever pull from the "archives" unless I setup another 10 player Saturn Bomberman marathon).
I'm still hopeful that someone with complete NTSC-J Sega sets comes along and does something similar. Nothing against the PAL releases, though, the NTSC-J games always seemed to have the best art out of all of the regions. That, and the manuals would be similar in size (due to a single language), as opposed to the novels that are most PAL manuals, which means another single individual should be able to scan everything in their own lifetime.
It's taken me a little over 2 years scanning pseudo regularly to scan all of Sega Master System, Sega CD, Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast front/back and manuals in their entirety, along with a few other things along the way.
So, again, hopefully proof to any other collector with full sets on shelves that it (it being scanning in everything) can be done by one person.
I'd also like to see someone tackle a full Neo Geo set just because I enjoy the SNK art. I've scanned in all 32 AES games I own, and that's pretty much all I'll ever own (still need to eventually pick up Samurai Spirits Zero Special, the last game on my wish list). I know there are individuals out there with a full set, such as 8man:

Also, added a new console to my "OTHER" section which is reserved for my non-Sega systems:

Yea, I took a slight PC-FX detour instead of finishing up Sega CD cardboard boxes, and I'll probably take a 32X and 32X CD detour and scan those boxes as well prior to jumping back on Game Gear and Genesis scans (or the N64 manuals I'll probably do first). I'll also possibly do label scans on the 32X carts, haven't decided.
I focused on manuals and manuals only originally, though, decided to start doing cases simply because with Sega CD and Saturn manuals, you had the nice and colorful art front and center, and when I was doing Master System, you just had lots and lots of blue :) So, that's why I scanned all of the Master System inserts, just so I had something pretty to look at. That's where I got myself in trouble, because now I had a complete set of Master System art, but not for the other systems, hence why I then did all Saturn back inserts, and then Sega Dreamcast and finishing up Sega CD at the moment.
-
All of the original Sega CD cardboard boxed games now have front/back scans.
I also noticed that I never scanned the newspapers that came with the Sherlock Holmes games, so I scanned in both of those and uploaded them.
So, that should wrap up a complete archive of US Sega CD art (covers, manuals, inserts, maps (for Vay), and supplemental books (the newspapers for the Sherlock Holmes games).
As always, if anyone notices anything I missed or screwed up scanning, let me know.
-
I went ahead and tagged all of the Sega CD 32X cases and uploaded those as well, and also picked up a replacement manual for Tetris 2 for Super Nintendo and uploaded that as well. So, I just need to eventually pick up one more SNES manual to complete my scans for my personal SNES collection.
Will probably throw 32X boxes and carts (for label scans) on the scanner next. Again, I know there's already covers for everything 32X, though, still just like to scan my own collection for my own copies to throw on ratigators.com.
I've also been pulling manuals for my Nintendo 64 games, and already found 3 games missing manuals (1080, Clayfighter and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness). I should have been more attentive when people were borrowing Nintendo 64 games back in college (that's when I used to let people take everything, these days I just lend out loose carts and throw discs in jewel cases).
-
Uploaded my Nintendo 64 manuals for the letter "B".
-
Took a N64 manual scan detour to "complete" my 32X scans to add boxes and cart labels to the manuals that are already complete.
A through N have been uploaded:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=SEGA32X
The others are scanned, just need to finish rotating/cropping/saving/renaming.
-
Also, for those of you following my original Sega manual scan thread may recall seeing the name of Specialt1212 as donor #1 for Sega Genesis manuals:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=6791.msg108582#msg108582
He just sent another package my way, 50+ pounds of Nintendo/Super Nintendo/Nintendo 64/Gameboy/Gameboy Advance manuals:
I already have Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 sections on ratigators.com in my "OTHER" console area with my personal best of collections, though, I've definitely got a few more manuals to scan to fill out those areas.
I haven't had a chance to dig through all of those manuals yet, but if anyone is looking for a specific Nintendo console game manual scan, let me know and I'll dig through to see if it's there and bump that to the top of my scan queue. As for Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64, as mentioned, I already had sections for those, so check that first, as it may have already been in my personal collection and already scanned.
-
All of my 32X box and cart label scans are now up.
If I screwed something up (which I have been known to do from time to time), let me know.
Also, FYI, even though Pitfall doesn't have a manual (hence the empty gray box), I do have the game, so click on through for a cart label scan if you need it. Spider-man and World Series Baseball are still not in my collection, and at the prices they are commanding these days (due to being the last game that most collectors going for a complete set need, and apparently, most are willing to pay just about anything), I'm sitting those out for the foreseeable future.
That probably seems silly, especially coming from someone with a bunch of Neo Geo AES games or full size arcade games that cost more, but I have a general rule of thumb that I stick to, and that is, not paying more than roughly double of the original SRP of a game. Thankfully, any of the rarer Sega CD or Saturn titles I had actually picked up new at the time of release (except for the Netlink Daytona). The 32X, I had only ever bothered to pick up a few games back then (Cosmic Carnage, Knuckles Chaotix, Star Wars, Tempo and Virtua Fighter for the novelty of it).
-
I've uploaded my progress thus far on my Nintendo 64 collection, uploading through "L" but I skipped Crusin' USA for now, as the manual is a poster, and I hate scanning posters (though, have scanned every other poster, such as Miracle Warriors for Master System or Vay for Sega CD, or Lunacy and Virtua Fighter for Saturn), but I'll eventually come back to it.
Still haven't found my manuals for Legacy of Darkness or Clayfighter, so those got skipped as well for the time being.
I also added my missing manual for Super Off Road (my SNES copy came with a NES manual) that was in the bog box that Specialt1212 mailed over.
I've also started to dig through that box and set aside various SNES and N64 and NES manuals for "priority" scanning that I plan to get to first (things like Mega Man X instead of Madded 95) before getting to the rest. Though, I had planned on finishing up my Game Gear and Genesis scans first.
Though, again, if there's a manual that anyone was needing, like, yesterday, let me know and I'll see if it's there, and if so, go ahead and move it to the top of my queue.
-
Finished uploading the rest of my manual scans for my Nintendo 64 collection (including the Crusin' USA poster/manual), so here's a quick shortcut for those that want to skip the homepage to check them out:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?m=OTHER&c=NINTENDO64
-
I went ahead and created folders for my Nintendo games and also scanned the "Halloween-esque" themed games in my collection:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?m=OTHER&c=NINTENDOENTERTAINMENTSYSTEM
Castlevania (USA)
Castlevania II Simon's Quest (USA)
Castlevania III Dracula's Curse (USA)
Fester's Quest (USA)
Friday the 13th (USA)
Ghosts 'N Goblins (USA)
Shadowgate (USA)
Solstice (USA)
I spot checked with NintendoAge, and they already had manual scans for every single one of these (albeit some were much lower resolution, such as Ghosts 'N Goblins), and I'm sure most of my Nintendo manuals already have manuals floating out there, but I still plan on eventually scanning my personal collection just to have my own collection archived.
-
Hmmm.... I think 1980coelho was looking for Friday the 13th.
-
I've started to deviate a bit on my Neo Geo collection, expanding out to other 2D fighters from other developers, as well as the SNK fighters that weren't part of the "core" series I grew up with.
I picked up Kabuki Klash, Karnov's Revenge and Savage Reign from and they have all been scanned (inserts and manuals).
As with my other AES games, they are the Japanese releases, so they are titled and sorted by the Japanese names (for example, Tengai Makyo Shinden instead of Kabuki Klash):
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?m=OTHER&c=SNKNEOGEO
-
Also uploaded some Xbox One covers:
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=XBOXONE
I did the inserts as well as the DLC cards, and on the Day One editions you'll see why, as when you put them all together, you get this:
-
Scanned in another recent Neo Geo AES pickup, Matrimelee, and as usual, it's filed under the original Japanese title, Shin Gouketsuji Ichizoku.
-
No new updates to report at the moment, though, I do keep up to date on private messages around here, so if anyone needs anything I have to prioritize, just yell.
Work is always madness end of 4th quarter, beginning of 1st quarter, so things should be calming down here enough by the end of the month to get back into a consistent scan schedule (and get the stacks of sorted Game Gear and Genesis manuals off my desk).
That, and I also lay blame on the new Killer Instinct that has sucked a good deal of what free time I have (that isn't dedicated to family time).
-
Would you mind scanning Trevor McFur in the Cresent Galaxy for the Atari Jaguar?
Thanks.
-
Would you mind scanning Trevor McFur in the Cresent Galaxy for the Atari Jaguar?
Thanks.
Scanned and uploaded. When editing the first post to put the link to the files, I realized all of my other requested Jaguar scan links were busted when I did the big reorganization of ratigators.com.
So, I went ahead and updated all of those as well (and prior to this request, it seems the last Jaguar request was from January 2011 :) )
Also, I added a few more Neo Geo AES scans as I'm slowly trying to complete my fighting game collection, and new additions are Fire Suplex and Shin Oh Ken. You'll also see scans for NAM-1975, which is the only non-fighting game Neo Geo game I own, that I picked up because I found a deal that was too good to pass up for an uncensored copy and that was the original carton box version, and since it was NGH-001 (the first AES title released), I sort of felt obligated to pick it up, even though I always sucked at the game (Cabal and Punisher on the NES, I could hold my own but this game just never clicked for me).
-
I also have some more Game Gear scans finished, though, was going to upload the rest of my non-complete set in one fell swoop, and I've still got about 30 manuals to get through, that I had hoped to have finished up last month, but could never find the time, and this month itself is already half way over.
Still hoping I'll get through them this month, so I can get back to scanning Genesis manuals.
-
Posted my Sega manual updates over in this thread, which is the one I originally created years ago (almost 3 years to be exact) as my "official" Sega manual scan progress thread, leaving this one for scan requests for things other than manuals:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=6791.msg146758#msg146758
Speaking of which, finally picked up a replacement copy of Pitfall for 32X to replace my loose cart, and I uploaded the box scans as well as replaced my cart label scan, since my new copy had a nicer label (which, as a reminder, all of my cart label and box scans are after the manual's last page):
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=SEGA32X
-
(which, as a reminder, all of my cart label and box scans are after the manual's last page)
Also, as another reminder, same is true for Sega CD, Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast, with insert, box scans and any map scans after the manual for each game.
-
Scanned in a few more recent Neo Geo pickups (King of Monsters 1 and 2 and Galaxy Fight):
http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?m=OTHER&c=SNKNEOGEO
And as I mentioned in another thread, I got caught up on XO scans as well:
