Okay gang, Snowcone says someone hacked into the site the other day and he had to disable the uploads - again.
He's working on fixing it, but it might be a little while. :(
-
Ooh, UncleBob has exclusive information. Good effort! A+!
-
Actually, Snowcone contacted me. ;)
No credit for me. :(
-
let's just tie uploads to our forum accounts. Require the login to upload, etc.
at least then we can ban folks who want to go crazy uploading random dumb shit

This would also eliminate the "Author" tab. The author should be logged in anyways.... its free to join, and that way we could potentially track an IP
-
Yeah I never understood why it's been open like that. New/anonymous users generally don't have anything good to contribute until they've lurked around the site for a while.
-
Even mapping users to uploaded files won't help the problem that I'm fixing. I've got some other security measures I'm about to put into place. I won't go into detail about them here for obvious reasons.
-
so when has 9 months == a bit?
Craig: Oh how far along are you?
Pregnant Lady: Oh, just a bit
Seems like this baby of a upload function should be up already!
-
Don't beat a dead horse.
-
I quite contributing because of this issue
-
I think we are doing quite fine with external cover storage.
-
i don't think it's beating a dead horse, and i don't think the external storage is fine.
it's not often i agree with craig, but it is true that the site feels a bit stagnant without new covers being accessible - i have been doing stuff for myself and not showcasing or sharing as it's a hassle.
i come to the site multiple times a day, and just delete a shit load of spam, and read a few posts - but don't relish the excitement of new covers that i used to get. i know people have real lives out there, including me, but would be nice to get a real timescale on a fix.
-
I too would prefer the upload would be up, but nothing is preventing us from creating topic where people can post link to their cover if they think it's good enough for the site.
Cover Admins could then just download the covers, check them normally and if quality is OK post them to the site.
That should not be too much more labor intensive than picking them from the upload folder or is it.
-
I would also welcome the upload function since i don't know if any of the responsible admins take
a look or are even able to check and upload the covers of all the active artists around here.
I think it's way too much work to check the different sources instead of having one spot where
all the covers which are ready for a check/upload come together.
-
To be honest it is too much work to check every threads for links to new covers. So I do checking just for a few selected people at the moment. Just for the best. ;D

Hello I have uploaded covers about 5 times and they don't seem to get posted up on the site. Not sure if there was anything wrong with the uploads.

The covers must be manually checked and approved by one of the few selected Cover Admins.
We do the checking when we have time.
I'll probably do major checking after Christmas or New Year, depending when I finally can afford the computer I want.

Hi I uploaded a cover ages ago and they never seem to get shown. I know they are put through a process but I never get any feedback. I uploaded 32x pal covers and the 32x hasn't had a new cover uploaded since 2013.
Sorry I'm just excited about contributing some stuff to cover project :)

Because the cover project is based on volunteers, it takes time to filter through covers and post them. Hundreds of covers are submitted and of the hundreds, usually only a few of those covers meet site standards. Unfortunately, submitters aren't contacted as to why their covers didn't make it to the site.

True, we do this on our free time and we simply don't have time to give feedback. -> added or scrapped without explanation.
But I'll try to remeber to take a look after work tonight.

Ya I'm trying to work my way up to some type of cover admin or something. That way I can help out the site more in my free time.

So straight to the second level from top. ;D
Ambition is alway good, but aim bit lover first like Cover Guru.
I'll see what covers you have made and see do you have potential.
I think so far only one person has managed to become Cover Admin without being Cover Guru first (or atleast since Cover Guru was created), but he is such a dick and know-it-all that higher ones though what ever and promoted him.
-
I meant Guru. Lol. I don't need to be super special. Just wanna help out more.
I believe I sent you some of my newest covers before my computer shot craps again. I think they were Fallout 1, 2, and Cave Story 3D and you said they looked damn good! :P (at least that's how I took it ha ha.)

I say shoot for the stars. Go for Oversight. ;D Nah, nevermind.
Yeah, someday I would like to work my way up to maybe forum admin (there's a few people with that title). But I don't know if I would ever be as high as a cover guru or cover admin. I've finally started making some covers, but I'm only using other people's covers to move stuff around to make different styles. I haven't made anything from scratch/raw scans yet.

Oversight is not ranking title actually, it merely my private class that grants me do stuff without cluttering boards as I can do stuff in my private area without it showing on the boards. And it used to let me keep blue stars instead of green (when I was Forum Admin -> Global Moderator -> Special Forum Admin -> Oversight with Special Forum Admin status), now blue badge instead of red (Oversight with Cover Admin status).
Ranking titles go something like this at the moment:
- Site Admin = Snowcone: The one and only Deity of this here site.
- Cover Admin: Apostoles of Snowcone. Do the day to day managing and approving.
- Cover Guru: Member showing strong artistic skill and more than basic understanding of quality wanted from covers.
- Forum Admin: Auxiliar policies. Nowadays almost defunked title.
-
Do all Cover Gurus still have Forum Admin powers? I remember I had them from the start, then they were gone, then Arseen or someone gave them back.
All I ever do is ban spambots, I just did 2 last night.

I was just joking anyway. ;)
The ranking order is basically what I assumed except that I figured Oversight was one step above Cover Admin and one step below Administrator.

No.
FA powers are too great to give for everyone, and that prevented (or made us really think) who to promote to CG.
So we stripped down powers of CG.
You have full FA powers as you are both FA and CG.
You had been with the powers already so we didn't want to neuter you. ;)

I am wondering what it would take for me Cover Gurus status?
-
I'm not too worried about becoming a cover guru more as I am more concerned with improving my skills to make covers that people can use for their casing collection. I'm sure that when they promote someone to guru status it is thoroughly discussed and the decision is the right one. Making segamer a cover guru was logical as his covers are some of the best on the site and he knows what the quality standards are when it comes to making them. I can only hope to develop my skill to get as good as he is and contribute in a way that he does.

Mel, I am by no means close to qualified enough to say if you should be Guru or not but just from personal observations here's my thoughts:
Your covers look fantastic and I think you have the knowledge of the quality standards for the site. However, you don't seem as engaged in the community, it's strictly business: "Does anybody have scans for game X", "Here's a cover for game Y." When someone gives you advice it almost seems like you ignore it and keep doing your own thing. I'm not sure you could look at someone else's cover and suggest changes to make it site worthy, you are more likely to make the changes yourself or start over from scratch and post a better one. Don't get me wrong, you have made countless covers for me and I appreciate it but I feel like if you really want to be a Cover Guru you need to join in the conversations more and help others instead of dropping a beautiful cover and leaving. My two cents, maybe others agree, maybe not.
-
I actually agree completely with the above statement. I will add though, that for someone who asks for so much, I've never seen any thank yous for the scans that others have supplied. (not saying you haven't, I've just not seen any.)
Plus, on the last covers I've looked at, I saw a few flaws. Haven't looked at any newer ones which I prolly need to do. It just seems you crank out covers so fast that some of the quality gets pushed to the wayside.
Hope that's helpful.
-
I do thank people when provide scans and may have missed a few people but, I tried to make sure that thank them.
-
And like I said. I may have just missed them. Not trying to be hateful. Just to the point with no sugar coating.
-

Not to be oversensitive, but i felt a little sad inside when I ordered a game from eBay and uploaded the cover. You had a cover for it made so quick you didn't even say thanks. I didn't say say anything because you made the cover, which in turn helps me out too. But at least in my case, you have helped me more than Ive helped you. So, thanks Mel.
-
I did not intend for this to become a "shit on Mel" session. You make beautiful covers and you make a lot of them. I have seen you thank people for scans many times. Hell, you even ask for scans for covers that others are looking for. Keep doing what you are doing but in my opinion if you want to become a Guru or Admin I think you could work on being involved with more than making covers.
-
Hey, nobody is shitting on anyone here. I'm glad that Mel takes the time to do the covers. She asked a question, it got answered.
I know before when I've put out covers they weren't great and to this day they still aren't perfect. So it's not a battle either. The negative criticism is there to help her get better to where she could potentially gain a status. Not to just throw her under the bus.
So in all regards. Mel if I hurt your feelings, I'm sorry. Just trying to help you get better.
-
And also keep in mind that Cover Guru is a strictly honorary title.
In my book it's all about perfection. Quality over quantity. Being open to suggestions and not ignoring them.

These.
-
For me, the biggest issue is the lack of response to criticizism. I just stopped trying after a while because it was like talking to a wall. Most of your covers are very. Lose to perfect, but suffer from small details, like dust removal, tint issues ( a lot of your covers seem to be tinted blue) or replacing logos.
-
There are a lot of members on here that have the ability to make great covers but either give up because they get constructive criticism or they ignore it and keep making the covers the same way without learning or trying to get better at their craft. I think that almost anyone can make a good cover, it just takes patience, practice and a good ear to take the feedback from others and apply it to their covers.

Wise words sir.
-
Na my covers are beyond perfect! ;) :P
-
Okay, then Can you guys provide me with some tips to improve the my covers?
-
I think the main thing is, when someone gives you a tip you just need to respond either explaining why you did it the way you did or just say thanks for the advice and use that advice for your next cover.
-
I'd say, looking at your most recent covers, it's mostly dust removal and logo replacement, Finer details.
Contra 3 has some dirt by the "The"
Fallout 3 - The contrast/ brightness was boosted a little too high, the grey rings on the front Xbox 360 banner are gone.
MegaMan 8 back cover- has some dust on spines, ESRB, and SKU. A good way to clean up the SKU is to take a bit of the lines towards the bottom and stretch it upwards.
Red Faction, some dirt on back, the Copyright text is a bit blurry, a good way to sharpen it, with white text on black or vice versa, is to desaturate it and up the contrast.
Spirit Camera - Dirt above logo on front, spine, among other places, Cover seems a bit dark, relapse the Seal on the back, Nintendo, 3DS logos. Desaturate the grey text, it is a little off color, and sharpen.
Kirby Super Star - forgot to remove a layer in template on back, higher contrast on back, Spine drop shadow.
The DS template could use some work as well, I was working on a updated GB template at one point, I'll get to DS sometime soon.

I am looking for where to go if I were to want to take a scan of a box I have that is not on the site and upload it to someone to add it.
I have a store and have been converting from actual box displays to custom cases. I've probably got about 50 or so, lots of sports, that I didn't find on the site and that is just the tip of the ice berg.
It looks like this is the place but is not possible to do at the moment?

The feature that is currently not working is only for uploading finished covers. If you have scans that need to be cleaned up, just share them in the forums. There are several scanning threads out there or you could start your own. Using something like Mediafire or box.net makes it pretty easy to share scans.

aww. As soon as they come back up Ima upload covers like craaaaaaaaaaaaazy ;-;
-
aww. As soon as they come back up Ima upload covers like craaaaaaaaaaaaazy ;-;
Before you do that make sure the covers are perfect, otherwise they get deleted without any user apart from oner of the quality checkers seeing it.
I checked your Phoenix Wright cover and it had great parts and really poor parts:
Great:
- Correct DPI of 300
- Size seemed to be correct
- Front image great
- Top of the back cover great
Poor:
- Bottom of the backcover pixelated scrahy and dusty.
- Spine pixelated.
- Front cover's side logo pixelated.
All these poor parts are easily fixed by using clean template and by using higher quality raw stuff found by google.
I'll heavily suggest you'll continue distributing using Mediafire account for time being so we can nudge you towards perfection. ;)
And less picky members cab get your covers.
Thank you.
-
Will do! I'm working on making better covers now.

Hi, I tried to upload a cover via forums and it says upload folder is full or file too large?
File is 2.4mb.
Just want to help contribute after all the awesome covers i've downloaded.

Yeah the uploads are bit broken currently.
And only few select best of the best top tier members ;) have permission to access the uploaded stuff.
Much, much, much better way is to upload to Mediafire or Box (which don't compress/screw the uploads) and then post a link to them in a suitable topic.
This allows everyone to access the files.
-
Ok thanks, I uploaded 2 versions of a DS cover - would really appreciate some feedback if they are good enough quality. I have nearly 3000 games in my collection and would love to help out with supplying some obscure covers.

I'll have a look at the forum uploads folder. Main site uploads are offline at the moment still.

Im new to the site and would like to get to helping out making covers and uploading asap but it still says uploads are offline.

Hi and welcome.
Use Mediafire or Box.com
Upload to either one and then link to the boards.

Are we ever going to be able to upload directly to the site for easier finding? There are many links that are broken or the file doesn't exist anymore. I also wish more people could scan their stuff as I know I am not the only one with some of these games but can't find a good raw anywhere.

Doubtful and actually pretty unnecessary IMHO.
First of all sorry for my straight up answer (strong language ahead!!!). ;)
It's multifacioned thing and really the current set-up works best for everyone.
1: Even if uploads would work only select few Cover Admins would get access to them for security reason. When it was free for all people tried to hijack the site. With Mediafire/Box way all get to enjoy the things.
2: Raws section would never be brought back for the same security reason. In addition the raw section was abused by porn distributors among others.
3: Most raws and covers uploaded there were utter shit as people just uploaded something without giving any consideration for the quality we need and then cried when we didn't take their stuff. This caused huge bandwidth and storage costs and caused many of the select members to stay out of the upload area. With Mediafire/Box way the load is distributed way better.
4: All good quality stuff ever uploaded here is backed up by members so even if links break GREAT stuff is never lost.
And Many Mediafire links can be fixed.
SECOND STRONG LANGUAGE WARNING!!!
5: I can freely say this as the people who just fuck around (I definitely don't mean you 8)) and upload shit without bothering to read the guides or ask can just fuck off and people who do quality work get usually thanked or politely nudged to better the things and don't mind having dedicated Mediafire/Box account.
