Title: Why Double wide DVD cases?....
Post by: BerzerkJ on July 28, 2010, 06:58:02 PM
I thought I would throw this out for discussion....
Why did the PC gaming industry go to double wide DVD cases? Aside from a wider spine to print, there is no more viewing room, the spine is usually pretty simple anyway. It just seems to me like it is a colossal waste of space. I'm sure the single width ones are cheaper to manufacture. You can get single width cases that can hold 8 discs, and 6 if you want to stick in a manual.  Most games are 1 these days, some 2. I get really irked when I buy a game in a double wide case, it has one disk and the manual is on the disc....

Anyone else thoughts?

I'm guessing you're talking about STACKpaks, which are terrible. I'd at least rather have spindles or something. They're probably more expensive to produce and ship, so I don't know why they do it.

Meanwhile, on the console front, they went close to perfection and then ruined everything with the slats in the plastic.

Ya, console cases are basically DVD or DS. I don't have a PS3 or blue ray so I am not sure if PS3 cases are the same height as DVD cases. What do you mean slats in the cases? You mean special snap in spots for particular game types?

PS3 cases are slightly thicker than their Blu-ray movie counterparts. However, All Blu-ray stlyed cases (Including PS3/HD DVD (failure ;)) are shorter than standard DVD cases.

Idk, I'm a big fan of Blu-ray styled cases, they're just neat!  ;D

As for the slats in DVD cases, do you mean the brand new "eco-friendly" cases. Ugh, let's not get me started on those.  :-X

I know with some games, like Guild Wars the reason they went big was to fit the manual in it.
It could also partly be due that they wanted to keep the old width of the boxes.

Some games do come in standard size DVD cases.

That would be a pretty big manual. Never bought guild wars, but I've never seen a game yet that the manual couldn't fit in a regular dvd case.
As for trying to imitate box size, that may be. However, the smaller box size really came about because of there not BEING a standard size. I have game boxes that you could fit an xbox and four original controllers in, and I have some so small you couldn't get a jewel case in them....so not sure about that being the cause.
