We have Knuckles Chaotix on the site by the way.

Would also be nice that IF you start a new cover thread you would at least post some covers useable for our site!

Other than that they look pretty nice but still unfortunate that we can't use them.

Post by: djshok on May 26, 2010, 06:01:54 AM
Tell ya what, I'll try to convert them to 300 dpi, UGC size, and put them up on the ftp tonight, maybe you'll think they're still ok.  In the NES thread one of the other admins said it's cool to link to covers that don't fit the site criteria, so I thought it was ok. No disrespect.

Jup it is no problem at at all to link to covers which are not up par for the site but it's kind of "uncool" to just open up a new cover thread for covers which are not useable. ;)

Well here you go, see what you think.  Converted to 300 dpi, UGC size.

Not too shaby actually. The Chaotix cover actually looks pretty nice on the Kolibri cover the front looks pretty bad though.

I suppose the source for the Chaotix cover wasn't toobad right? The Kolibri source on the other hand propably mobygames or worse. ;)
Title: Re: Some 32X covers not on the site
Post by: djshok on May 26, 2010, 04:13:11 PM
Yeah the Chaotix cover had 2 things going for it, one that it's already intentionally blurry so a little more doesn't hurt it, and two, the white background meant I didn't have to stretch it as much, just cut it out.

The Kolibri yeah.... the original was 640x869, I'm surprised I managed to get it to look presentable at all.  Still if you really want to complete your collection, or want to put your 32x games into plastic cases those aren't a bad way to go.  I printed that 250 dpi Kolibri one out and it looks decent, actually looks better than some official SMS covers hahaha.  But I know you guys are perfectionists here, and I respect that.

I'd love to update the Kolibri pic if I could find a better scan.  Maybe one will surface at some point.

I don't have time tonight, but tomorrow I can scan my Kolibri box and you can see if you can do anything with it.  The box is a little beat up, though, so it'll need some cleaning up.

And here is a nice and fixed up NTSC Knuckles' Chaotix.  It's basically a repro of the retail cover with minor detail changes. the background image on the back is different, it's actually a faded version of Japanese cover art featuring the game protagonists.  The font on the text body on the back is different and the screen shots are obviously different as is the little Knuckles icon on the spine.  Everything else is basically the same as the retail.

Up next Spiderman and Blackthorne.

You mean the Shenske template?  They are from there. Although there are several versions of the Sega seal in there.  I can make you an alternate version with the other Sega Seal if you like.  Not sure about the 2 player logo, which one did you have in mind?

The Sega Seal is really nice, thanks for that.  Hopefully it won't blend too much with the yellow 32x background. The 1 Player logo, said "1 Players" it's a little too Engrish for me, and I checked all my Sega games, all the 1p ones say "1 Player" so I changed it.

I also changed the Chaotix background a bit and the front logo. Admins, I'm sorry about the double or triple upload  :-[ If you guys could please use this latest version to put on the site.

I've got the fronts/spines of Space Harrier and T-Mek looking Good, but it's those freaking back images that always leave me stumped.

I don't like recycle the back and just cleaning up/resizing to fit - because I'm semi-OCD and like to retype all of the text.

What I'm basically getting at is, anybody have ANY ideas for a back image for these two games?

(I can't stop until 32X is behind us  ;))

Also, I know the 32X was a massive failure, but imagine if it were on the market for a few more years, it had potential - in my mind.

It was poor timing for sega to release the system. Maybe if they would have released it in 92 or 93 it would have been much more popular. Sega really shot themselves in the foot because they were supporting too many systems at once.  What would you do ... get a slightly beefed up 2D console that still wasn't as good as the SNES or wait a year and get a 3D Sega Saturn? Just bad timing and marketing  ::)

Yeah, they could have done a few things different, maybe released the neptune at launch with the add-on for older Genesis users... or built backwards compatibility into the Saturn's cartridge slot.. although, it was already ridiculously expensive at launch. Don't mind me, I'm just dreaming over here  ::)

Their ambition (some would say, stupidity  :P) killed off (imo) the best system of the 32-bit era.

Well what I do for back images is load the game up in an emulator and take my own.  I hate reusing images from a scan, they never look that good.  You're much better off taking your own screen caps.  Plus it's more fun this way because you get to play the game a bit while making the covers.

Hard to tell from the previews. The fronts of tempo and Baseball look a tad dakr and colorless at first glance though.

Those look great!  The only thing I'd suggest is the MKII cover, on the spine has a vertical Acclaim logo instead of the horizontal SEGA logo.

And if you want to adjust to the strength of the colours  in PS you can do it by going to Image > Adjust > Hue/Saturation and increase the Saturation a bit.  It really makes the colours more vibrant.  Also in Image > Adjust > Color Balance you can adjust the strength of certain colours.

I just got my hands on copies of 36 Great Holes and Toughman Contest, but since uploading isn't working right now I threw them up on my Dropbox account if anyone wants to take a crack at them.  Once uploading is back I'll put the raws in there.

These were scanned at 600dpi, so they're a little big, and sadly there is no descreening with my scanner software, but I think that can be fixed since they're at 600 dpi.  Also, the case I got for Toughman looks like it's a bit sun faded, so I included a scan of the cart label (which doesn't look faded) if someone wants to try and fix the colors.

I just got my hands on copies of 36 Great Holes and Toughman Contest, but since uploading isn't working right now I threw them up on my Dropbox account if anyone wants to take a crack at them.  Once uploading is back I'll put the raws in there.

Awesome! I'll get right on it! :)

Nice argo! I was out of town last weekend until Saturday night, so I'll try this weekend to get some scans.

Just a curious observation. I see when you added the "Akklaim" logo to the spine of MKII, it's white, while on the original box it's black. I noticed you did the same on the NFL Quarterback Club cover.

Jup argo those look pretty decent! :)

Could it be that the Baseball cover got a little bit too much blue on the front? Or does it look like that on the retail?

It's honestly just me having trouble with the raw.. the combination of the way the cover looked when it was released and the quality of the scan just made it more trouble that it needed to be.. I'm still going in and tweaking it but I got impatient and wanted to show the progress. It seems to be the only cover I've made that I'm not happy with haha.

Thanks for tackling Space Harrier, djshok - I had started that one awhile back but kind of just gave up on it. It looks great!

As for the 32X in general, I agree with tiktektak... I feel like the Shenske template's stripes are closer to the majority of the original games. (a few used the lighter striped yellowish color, I believe.)

Idk... just my two cents? haha

http://www.box.net/shared/5q4x8399ls (http://www.box.net/shared/5q4x8399ls)

Here's the template psd if anyone wants to use it.  Feel free to put it on the site, or do whatever you guys want with it.
http://www.box.net/shared/vocd9t1o03 (http://www.box.net/shared/vocd9t1o03)

I haven't printed it out yet, but it's based on an actual scan of a cart so, it should be spot on. Also, the template has both stripe colours (the darker ones and the lighter ones).

Ok, I gotta ask, as it's really starting to bug me.  What is it with this site and the orange 32x stripes?  Everywhere that I've posted these covers and people I've shown them to seem to agree that the 32x covers were in fact fairly light.  Some games were darker to a certain degree but not nearly as dark as the colours in the the template.

Here are some pics of original boxes to compare.

Also when you print the covers they always come out a little darker than they look on screen, which makes the lighter ones look about spot on and the darker more orange version just plain weird.

Worst case scenario I can make 2 versions or each cover if you guys really like the orange ones that much.  I just find it odd that everyone here seems to like the orange stripes so much more...

What is it with this site and the orange 32x stripes?

I think it's just that the higher powers agreed on the colorscheme, and want everybody to use the agreed shades so the covers look consistent. They could have agreed on lightwer shade in the beginning, but now it's too worksome to change, as the older covers would have to also be changed to match the new shade.

I think that on many printers, the lighter stripes end up coming out as one solid yellow color, so the darker, orange looking stripes were probably added to increase the contrast and emphasize the separation.

I can understand and respect that, but at the same time the templates get updated all the time as the site grows and we improve our methods.  The Sega seal has been updated several times as have the 1 and 2 player symbols.  Also, it wouldn't be that much work to update the 32x section, that whole system only had about 35 games released, and we don't even have covers for all of them.  Also, I could volunteer for a massive 32x updating project since I just came into the possession of a large number of high quality 32x scans on which I will be working over the next few days. I literally have scans for most of the 32x library.

I think that on many printers, the lighter stripes end up coming out as one solid yellow color, so the darker, orange looking stripes were probably added to increase the contrast and emphasize the separation.

I think printers have trouble differentiating between certain similar colours. I know that some of the older Genesis covers printed as one solid colour.  However I've printed a few of these 32x covers on different printers and you can definitely see the separation between the stripes.  I can provide pics if needed.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful or anything.  I just think that perhaps we should consider updating the 32x template.  (Also the blue MD one, but that's another conversation).
Title: Re: 32X covers
Post by: shenske on March 17, 2011, 11:45:34 AM
I made the template more "orangey" because i wanted separated colors when they are printed out.  My initial SegaCD & Genesis stripes blended the colors into one solid stripe so i decided to exaggerative the colors for the covers on the site so when they are separated when printed.

If anyone would like me to update the colors on the current template let me know and i will do so.
Title: Re: 32X covers
Post by: djshok on March 17, 2011, 11:49:00 AM
Understandable, but you can still get a nice stripe separation without exaggerating the colours to such degree.  I'll post a pic of the ones I have printed out when I get home, and you can decide.

Would it be that difficult to update the template to have both versions of the stripes?  I'm assuming most people use that when building the covers, and it wouldn't be that hard to just make two versions for each of the covers if you're just showing/hiding layers.

No it would not be too difficult to add it but i'm against it.  I don't want to purposely divide the section into different colored templates.  It would be better to decide on a color or come up with compromise colors for the stripe.  That may alienate some people who have already printed covers but i think it would help a greater amount of people in the long run. We'll see ...

Not sure if this helps much, but when building my 32X collection, I only came across one game with the lighter yellow stripes, all of the rest had the darker orange (though, nowhere near as dark as some of the covers in the thread), and in fact, the one I have with the lighter stripes, I also have with the darker stripes.

Here's a photo for reference:

Ive got 4 CIB 32X games and their all the darker shade like the top copy of Star Wars Arcade. Thats why I suggested using a darker shade.

Alright guys, here are some pics:

All the covers were printed using laser printers, the Spider-Man cover was printed using a Samsung, the others using 2 different Xerox printers. I unfortunately don't have access to a high quality ink jet, so I can vouch for the results on those, however with the laser printers you can see a pretty clear distinction between the lighter and darker stripes. So, what do you think?

Heres a shot with an HP Vivera inkjet, the middle one is obviously the lighter one.

I've used and always preferred Shenske's template for the 32X, all of the 32X covers I've made have used that template.

So it looks like we're still undecided on which color scheme to use? :\ That's disappointing. Oh well, more covers to edit for later, I suppose.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just realized we have the orange ones already. Are you just going to make covers with both colors from now on?

You should probably make one with orange stripes anyway. The one we have one the site has the banner across the bottom which isnt actually on the retail cover.

Nice work what I can see from the previews.

Will check and add on the weekend.

Though I'm still not sure if we need two of the same covers on our site just in a bit of a different template. Maybe we should come to a real consensus beforehand.

Yeah there is actually a whole slew of 32x covers that I have done that can go up on the site.  Maybe I should message Cone about getting temp ftp access to put them all up at once.  I also updated some of the older covers I did, so there are at least 10 covers ready to go (in both UGC and Sega case format).  Plus I have scans for about 10 more that I still need to make.

If you guys want to just use one colour scheme that's cool with me.  I use the lighter ones for my personal use and the guys at Sega-16 prefer them as well, and then some people here prefer the orange ones, so I'll likely keep making both variations either way.  As long as you upload some of them on here then I'm happy.  8)

FTP access is strictly limited because we had some problems with fraudulent intrusion a year or so ago.
You can always zip/rar them up and upload them to mediafire or the likes. I'll get them from there and check/upload them if they are ok.

EDIT: I also tarted a poll although I still have a uncool feeling about polls (anyone who has been here for a longer time knows why). ;D

But do I have a nagging feeling that there was huge fight year or two ago, over something, but can't remember over what or was it even started by a poll.

Nothing really bad about it, just the spine text is different.  Sega 32x vs Genesis 32x.  I think the 2 can coexist side by side since they're different enough.

For the 6 people that still want the lighter stripes, don't worry, I'll continue to make them, they'll just be uploaded to my box.net account found in my sig.  There's a 32x folder in there, that's where they'll go.  ;)

Technically this one is a localization/repro cover, but I'll put it here since I don't think there's any point in making a separate thread for 32x repros.  This was the final game to ever be released for the 32x. It didn't make it to North America and was only released in Europe. So this cover isn't official, it's a localization for repro purposes since this game is virtually impossible to find.

Title: Re: 32X covers

Yes, I've got updates for a few of the covers already here.  Well not so much updates as alternate versions, a lot of the covers on here say SEGA 32X instead of Genesis 32X, this way we can have both.  I don't want to replace anyone else's covers and piss them off. I ended up making all these covers as a request for a friend, but I'd like to share them on here too.  This is what I have done so far:

After Burner
BC Racers
Blackthorne
Brutal
Chaotix
Cosmic Carnage
DarXide
Doom
Golf Magazine Presents 36 Great Holes
Kolibri
Metal Head
MKII
Motocross Championship
Shadow Squadron
Space Harrier
Star Trek
Star Wars Arcade
Tempo
Toughman Contest
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Racing
Web of Fire
Zaxxon's Motherbase

I still have scans for Quarterback Club, Pitfall and T-Mek that I can make, but the last 2 are not the best quality. Also I'm not too sure what to do about those Sega CD 32X games, since I don't even know what media format they came in.  I've never actually seen one, so I don't know if they're cart, CD or both...

Either way, I still need scans for these games:

Fahrenheit
Fifa Soccer '96
NBA Jam
Night Trap
RBI Baseball '95
Slam City with Scottie Pippen
Supreme Warrior
Surgical Strike
T-Mek
World Series Baseball starring Deion Sanders
WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game

I kinda feel ripped off being from a pal zone, US people have the nice matching spines of Pink - game gear, red - genesis, yellow 32x etc, but pal games dont have anything fun like that, unless you count the boring, white checkered - master system, black checkered - megadrive, grey checkered - game gear, the ntsc ones just look prettier :(

Trust me dude nothing about the American Sega covers is matching, all the pre-1993 games used some variation of the black grid layout (and believe me there were quite a few variations), then some games just did their own thing and didn't use any template, and then the later striped covers don't even match, some of them use white text, some use silver, and the stripes are all different shades and thicknesses, it's a bloody mess. And don't even get me started on the EA games.   ::)

I could have swore I uploaded the RBI Baseball 95 one a long time ago but I don't see it in there.

I believe it was agrobeat who made that cover (rbi baseball)

Trust me dude nothing about the American Sega covers is matching, all the pre-1993 games used some variation of the black grid layout (and believe me there were quite a few variations), then some games just did their own thing and didn't use any template, and then the later striped covers don't even match, some of them use white text, some use silver, and the stripes are all different shades and thicknesses, it's a bloody mess. And don't even get me started on the EA games.   ::)

If i had megadrive games id prolly convert them all to the same black grid template, one which matched up with white grid master system and grey grid game gear, but thats me im ocd

And yellow grid for 32x bwa ha ha

Thats pretty much what i'm doing - master system going back to basics with a mk1 template and simple comic art on front, and megadrive going black grid.  Only starting with loose carts, and some ea games, but plan to do the lot.  But as with so many of my 'plans' not sure if/when it will ever be finished.  Just got a box of 50 JP super famicom carts to clean up and case....................

I got curious to how a pure grid sega cartridge case collection would look like, so i made my own grids played with the colours, fit them into UGC template and out came:

Master System    -    Game Gear    -    Mega Drive    -    32X

Yea I thought I got raws for it but you reminded me, argobeat had already posted a preview so I didn't bother to scan it. Where is argo anyway? I miss that guy. If he doesn't want to finish the cover, I'm sure he'll give it to someone else to do.

I messaged arobeat a while ago about another cover, he mentioned something about a hard drive crash that wiped out a bunch of his covers.  :(  If that was one of them, I wouldn't mind giving it a shot, unless he wants to take it again.

And yeah, I hear what you guys are saying about the matching covers.  I've often though about putting all my games into cases that use the same template, but I have too many games with original covers and I can't bring myself to swap them.  So I guess I'm stuck with a very "colourful" Sega collection.

I actually hate the Red Genesis covers. I wish we would get all the Genesis/MD games in the original black grid template... someday :)

we need a total recall on the 32X covers as the colors need to be corrected on the spine first, lol

I based the template from 3 retail box scans we had on the site a long time ago. I personally haven't gone through and printed my 32X collection yet so I wasn't able to confirm the size of the spine logo. Part of the problem could be the resizing from a genesis size box to a ugc and then back to genesis. I dont remember how/if I resized the spine logo when I made the UGC template for 32X games.
Title: Re: 32X covers
Post by: djshok on July 22, 2011, 11:55:51 AM
I always thought the larger 32X logo was intentional, it looks cooler like that.  It's all loud and in your face just like the Sega ads in the 90's used to be.

As for a total recall on all the 32x covers, I've made covers for most of the collection, all standardized and using the same template and stripe colours, a lot of them have already been uploaded, and there are still a few left that need to go up.  I just need to send the remaining ones to Tik and fix a couple of the others.

Ditto. I think the difference is pretty minimal and I don't thunk people will be mixing the retail boxes and genesis clamshells on their shelf. I could be wrong but personally I'll be putting all my boxes away for safe keeping using only clamshells to house the actual game. Plus if It's only the clamshells or UGCs next to eachother then it won't make a difference what size the logo is when they are all the same . (not sure if that made total sense, it's hard to make everything sound right when typing on my phone).

That "Sega 32X" logo is something I always wondered about.  Were any games ever released with that logo?  I've only ever seen ones that say Genesis 32X, like in the pic above.  Was it like a regional thing or is that logo a custom creation?

Not counting the Sega CD 32X games we only have 6 more to go  ;D, and I have scans for 4 of them.   I updated the first post in this thread with the entire list so we can track progress there.

As for the Sega CD 32X titles I'm not quite sure what to do about them since I don't even know what case I should format those covers for, most of them came on multiple CDs, but I don't know how many CDs there were per each game since I don't actually own any of these titles.

I would say format them in DVD cases as well as genesis clamshells. Personally I'm not sure which type I'll end up going with but having the choice would be nice.

If I had some hi-res artwork to work with of course it would be, but unfortunately I do not :(.  I know there is some low res hamster art out there, but none of it is good enough for a cover, it would look terrible when printed out.

These are the games:

36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couple
Cosmic Carnage
Doom
Fifa Soccer 96
Knuckles Chaotix
Kolibri
Metal Head
Mortal Kombat 2
Motherbase
Moto Cross Championship
NBA Jam TE
NFL Quaterback Club
Space Harrier
Star Wars Arcade
Stellar Assault
Toughman Contest
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Racing Deluxe
WWF Raw

The Original quality of the scans is 150ppp so i don't know if they'll be usefull for the project but if they do let me know and i'll upload them right away.

I've already read through this thread and noticed aggro has already created this cover and it's probably 1000 times better than mine, but the link under the image seemed to be broken, so I decided to whip one up for myself in 15 mins or less. Other than his, I couldn't find it on the site so I decided to upload it for anyone who just simply needs the cover and isn't too concerned about a random football game being incredibly perfect. Although IF a cover admin sees this and feels like it's pretty close enough to be uploaded to the site with a little "cleaning up", I would not mind re-typing all the words on the back of the cover and getting rid of all the tiny little white dots.

Here is the complete archive of all North American Genesis 32X covers!  The archive contains both the light stripe and dark stripe versions of the covers formatted for UGC and Sega clamshell cases.  It also contains the 2 localized/repro covers for Fifa Soccer 96 and DarXide which were only released in Europe.

Download 7z 541 MB: http://www.freefilehosting.net/all32xcovers

I tried uploading all the covers here but the system is obviously not working, I'm not sure if the uploads aren't working properly, or if some of the cover admins feel threatened that these covers are replacements for ones they made years ago (which they're not), but whatever, I don't have the time or patience to argue minutiae.  The last time I tried contacting an admin here about uploading 32X covers the exchange was frustrating at best.  If anyone with admin status wants to grab the archive and put it up here, by all means go for it, these covers are free for anyone to use in any way they wish to use them.

The covers included are:

After Burner
BC Racers
Blackthorne
Brutal: Above the Claw
Cosmic Carnage
Doom
Golf Magazine: 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples
Knuckles' Chaotix
Kolibri
Metal Head
Mortal Kombat II
Motocross Championship
NBA Jam Tournament Edition
NFL Quarterback Club
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
Primal Rage
RBI Baseball '95
Shadow Squadron
Space Harrier
Spider-Man: Web of Fire
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starship Bridge Simulator
Star Wars Arcade
T-Mek
Tempo
Toughman Contest
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Racing Deluxe
World Series Baseball Starring Deion Sanders
WWF RAW
WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game
Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000

DarXide
Fifa Soccer 96

I also have scans for the 5 Sega CD 32X games and will be making those soon.

Please stop whining though, I really hate people always complaining.... I'll dl all of them and see to replacing/adding them. Still for you the same QC applies as for anyone else.
