Title: so how do you use these universal game cases?
Post by: kenshindono on May 07, 2010, 11:23:35 PM
so i only needed about 20 or so of the universal cases, but the only place i found them individually had them marked up so bad i said screw it and bought 100 from shopperinc

they arrived today and they look pretty cool but theres a problem

theres no guide on how to make stuff fit and just stuffing it in there doesn't seem to work right. The only games taht fit well are N64 games. Genesis games i lay horizontally and they feel loose. Snes games i lay vertically (not sure if they should face  with label to the left or right, or upside down or what)  and they feel REALLY loose. They dont sit on anything else.

It claims it takes CD cases but they dont fit. And neither do NES games. The manuals for SNES and N64 games also dont fit well, they seem to be too tall. And there are no clips to hold them in place anyway

what am i missing, are these the wrong ones? they seem to be the ones recommended here
these are what i got:
http://www.shopperinc.com/product.htm?pid=572959&catid=26185

maybe i should have got the mediashelving ones? they seem to be the same thing

how the heck do i have it hold SNES/genesis games without them flopping all over the place? what about manuals? NES/CD cases?

The loose fit is a tradeoff for being universal. NES games require modding.

I have made a post to this a while ago named Games In UGC + Pictures (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=3294.0)
I hope this helps.  My cases state "<--GENESIS--> <--N64--> and such

as for the CD, its not for a CD case, its for the CD.  Mind you, these cases were created for rental stores.  They were to used to make renting games easier as you can use a "universal" box

That's weird. The 100 pack I bought from Shopperinc a while back had the little name tags inside, on the plastic, letting you know how to place your Genny, NES, N64, & SNES carts correctly. Maybe they changed manufacturers?

that guides a bit helpful. it shows what to do for nes, but i still dont know what to do for cd cases. ANd whats up with the manuals? is there no way to get them to fit right? Pretty much all SNES and n64 manuals are too large

So i guess the case is supsoed to be loose. Are you supsoed to skip the dust sleeve? it seems like it makes closing it harder

and it does have a tiny little line guide that i missed before but it doesn't mention NES or cd's on it

SNES and N64 manuals fit just fine. Try tucking them in between the sleeve and your cover. They fit just fine. Thats how I do it,  cause yeah they dont fit that great inside the actaual UGC.

A cd will fit under the tab near the clamps that keep the case closed. (unless they changed the way its made)there should be a small tab that you put one side of the disc under and once closed it holds securely.

It also holds a full size single disc jewel case sideways. there are 2 rounded bumps near the top.  Put the disc just under those 2 bumps. and it fits snugly.

all case covers on the site for CD/DVD/Blu-Ray format material are made for dvd style cases unless otherwise noted or PS3.  if needed i could take a pic of how everything fits... but i think there are some on here somewhere in the forums.

A SNES dust sleeve will fit, but make a bulge if the manual is with it or if its a thick manual.

I do not have a manual for my Super Mario All-Stars but have a dust cover and it closes just fine

Most of my SNES games have dust cover. Putting your manual behind the back side of your cover helps and your case will close just fine.

well i fond the lttle tab you can slide a naked cd into, thats kinda neat it actually holds it pretty good.

I have no idea what your talkinga bout the Jewel case though.. i dont see any rounded bumps that your refering to for the jewel case.. can anyone explain that better?

I noticed what you said about the dust sleeve. Games without it i can squeeze the manual in oddly and it fits so so. If theres a dust cover though the manual has to be super thin or it bulges a LOT or doesn't close well at all. I see bad chads sugestion but that doesn't work at all for me. That makes the back bulge out a LOT when i do it, it looks really ugly

i guess theres no good solution for manuals? thats really too bad. They should have made them a tiny bit wider to accommodate the manuals. Right now the best i can do is put them in face down on the game itself then slowly close the left side down around it. Some big rpg snes manuals though seem to get pinched up and im worried about them wrinkling or getting damaged =(

is there no good solution to manual placement? Id think there ws a good way

oh ya, and is there a proper way to put the SNES carts in? i actually had mine reversed from bad chad (label facing eright). It seems some fit beter one way, others another depending on manual thickness

The best solution is to store them somewhrerf else. You should always take into account that those cases weren't desigend for us to show of our retro cart games but for videostores to have cases to put carts in. I don't think manual placement was that important for them.

and I'm sure with a Dremel or razor blade and patience you could fit a double jewel case

Is what I suggested not a good solution? The bulging you get from putting them in the sleeve isnt really that bad. Especially if you put it in the back since those cases ususally have a grove in them anyway. If anything I would say this is one of the best solutions because they certainly arent going to fit anymore comfortable inside the case and probably wont close either. The Secret of Mana manual is thick enough and the bulging isnt really that bad. Plus once it on a shelf next to other games you wont even notice.

I hadn't thought of doing that and forced mine to fit into the case itself.  I will be changing the few that i do have with manuals to the way you have yours

Yeah I knew right away that I wasnt going to cram any of manauals inside the cases. Not to mention you usually cant even get the case to close when you put it inside with the cart. Definetly the smartest way to store SNES and N64 manauls.
