Title: N64 Mini Box replicas
Post by: shenske on April 09, 2010, 12:10:54 PM
Along with exact demension sized boxes i had another little idea aswell.  Question 3: How about a box scaled down to fit just the cart?  My idea was since all my N64 covers are going to be custom in vertical orientation i thought it would be fun to have the "original" style box on the inside of the UGC holding my game. I just did a test print at office max to see if everything would all work.

Mark 1 - My fist test with the little box fit perfectly to the cart ... in fact too perfect. I'm going to make another revision a little bit bigger so the cart can slide in and out easier of the little box.  Also i'm going to add some duplicate flps that will over lay on each other so the box will be a bit sturdier. Here are some pictures to give you guys an idea of what i was brainstorming.

I printed the cover on label paper and stuck that to a thin peice of cardboard. ($0.89 per sheet)

Cart comparison to box (the box does close btw but i still want to make the mox slightly bigger to give the cart a bit more breathing room)

Tell me what you think!

EDIT:
Mark2 - I went back to officemax and printed out another box and this time it was 100% perfect!  The cart slides in and out perfectly. I added some duplicte flaps like i said i was going to  (the flaps over lay the same flap) and it made the box much sturdier and looking much more flush. I'll show some picturea of that later but i'm at work and i don't have an ipod cable to transfer the new pictures of the new box.

That's a great idea and a real nice job you did crafting that. Thumbs up!

(I decided to split this into its own topic and moved it to general discussion so everyone can see it :) )

Here are some pictures of mark2 (my revision) of WWF No Mercy Mini replica box. The cover is only slightly bigger as i said before and fits perfect now.

The arrows point to the extra duplicate flaps that overlay the same flap on the other side of the box.  These flaps do NOT get stuck on the cardboard as the rest of the box does.  The flaps are only there to provide a more flush surface on the edges and make the box sturdier.

This image shows the comparison of the first and 2nd box. The angle may fool you but both boxes are almost the same size.  Mark 2 is the box on the bottom, notice how the edges are much more flush with the rest of the box.  Mark1 required superglue to attach each part of the box together. Mark2 uses no glue (because of the extra flaps), fits better, is much sturdier and looks much better.

As always, Tell me what you think!

PLEASE DO THIS WITH EVERY GAME THAT IS A CARTRIDGE!!!! OH MY IS THAT THE MOST GREATEST THING IN THE WORLD!!!

I really dont want to talk in caps, but OMG!  Usually I am non-enthusiastic with any of my comments, but those are seriously amazing!!

I have a question though, is there legal sized paper (I am assuming that you are using a legal sized paper correct?) that is thicker than the normal sheet, say card stock legal sized paper?

**edit**
I would REALLY love to see more of this!!  As I would LOVE to case my extra games in these cases.  I have 2 Super Mario 64's with no reason to waste extra space placing 2 Super Mario 64 UGC's on the same shelf.

Systems I would love to see this idea with
     1) N64 the most, seeing that it is already started
     2) SNES --> I have soo many games that are duplicates with this system
     3) Sega Genesis --> Now, yes, they dont have original 'cardboard' boxes, but to fit games in one of these, droolz.

Glad you like it  ;D

For my personal use i was planning on making these mini boxes for N64, SNES and my Famicom games for now.  Its still kind of in the planning stage to see if i would like it. We'll see how things progress as i make some more boxes. (FYI - just finished a box for Super Smash Bros.)

Actually, the boxes are so small you can fit the entire box on a normal 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with a lot of room to spare.  I didn't print the box on cardstock. I printed it on label paper and simple stuck it onto a thin piece of cardboard. The cardboard i used is actually just officemax's dummy cardboard they use to keep the paper flat when you print stuff there. They just slip a piece of cardboard on the bottom and top of your prints when they put it in the envelope they give you. I would definately recomend just using label paper, as i was stating before, so you don't have to use glue to secure the box.

Just to note in case i didn't clarify myself well enough in my first post: For my personal use i'm puting these mini boxes inside the UGC as i still plan to make the vertical N64 covers. I just thought this would be a nice little touch to the project.  :)

And I think that is awesome!, but just think... the ability to stack these games... in the open, without having to worry about dust collection on the contact points... droolz... I am sorry, but I love this idea!!

Could you post a link to share the Super Smash Bros box?  I am going to my boss's place later to check out his game collection (he is a complete geek) and I think he would absolutely love seeing that!!

Then try to sweet-talk your boss into joining our fine community :)

geeks = lots of games = lots of scans/covers = a win/win situation for all of us :)

I agree. Love this Idea!!
Do you think cardstock would work? Theres not an officemax anywhere near me, sadly.

I think i should probably do a test print first before i share it to the world, unless you want to test it for me?

Perhaps, i'm sure it would be fine at first but there are a few potential problems. The cardstock may be too flimsy compared to cardboard so it may not last very long. Printing directly on cardstock will result in loss of quality and may come out blurry in certain areas. Also, since you would not be printing on label paper you would have to glue the box together. As you can see in my first box it didn't turn out that great.

I seriously just had a nerdgasm... that's awesome.

I'm always a fan of gaming projects, whether it be covers, boxes, posters, you name it. I would love to get involved with this sort of thing, but I lack the know-how and talent, haha.

There was a guy on GameTZ (Game Trading Zone) that was selling boxes he made for Super Mario/Duck Hunt or SMB/DH/Track --- I can't remember which --- because that game didn't originally come in a box (it was bundled with the system). I remember he said that it was done at a professional printing place, and he printed it straight onto cardboard shaped just like NES boxes were, then just folded it

Maybe with the right connection, someone can aid you in this pursuit and make it easier for you, Shenske?

I guess I'm the only one not super ecstatic about this. I don't know, it just seems redundant to me.

However it does make me wonder if, considering making boxes isn't out of the question, could we possibly make... digipaks? I know Sleeve City sells digipak trays.

Oh its super redundant, but i guess thats the fun of being borderline OCD.  :P

You go buy a game and it has no box and manual, would you place it in a ugc??  Seems silly to waste alot of space to waste if you dont have a manual.  This way, you can stack your games in the OPEN while knowing WHAT GAME it is, as there is no top label for N64 games.  Im still drooling

I have manuals for none of my games but I still want ugc's :(

This is freaking awesome! I don't think I'll be able to get UGC's 'till near the end of the summer. I only have about 12 N64 games and a Super Game Boy so it won't be a terrible amount of work either. I have no manuals and no room for UGC's anyway. If I gave you a list could you possibly do a few of those games first, or at least what seems to be in demand?

Possibly, i'm working on my own N64 collection first but they are not too hard to make in photoshop once you have somewhere to start.  As far as my own collection goes you can look at my backloggery profile in my signature. I'm sure we have some of the same games  :)

I took a quick look and these are the ones we have in common.  I've got a few others, but the only one I'll point out is Conker's Bad Fur Day, just cause it's my favorite and I don't know a lot of people who own it. Anyway, here's the list:

Goldeneye 007
DK 64
Killer Instinct Gold
Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Mario Tennis
Pokemon Snap
South Park
Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire
Wayne Gretzkey's 3D Hockey

Also after a quick look I realize I have 21 N64 games, lol.

My nephew likes playing it, both the N64 and Xbox versions. He's been playing them since he was 3, nothing bad has happened yet.
BTW: he doesn't speak English.

Not all the jokes are dirty:

1: What's your name?
2: Birdy
1: Beardy?
2: No. Birdy, you know like birds.

Or something like that.

that's fucking amazing!!! We need to do this for every N64, SNES, NES.... games. The exact box measurements.

The trick will be printing on cardboard but man is this awesome.

Well I'm not super stoked about this project but it's great to see an option for people who can't afford to get UGCs. I have had tons of requests from people from the UK to have me ship them UGCs because they can't get ahold of them any other way and this may be a nice alternative.

For myself, I think it would be too much of a hassle taking the game, not only out of the UGC but also out of the box each time I want to play it. Maybe if I never played my games it would be a different story.

Oh and shenske, OCD? you and me both bro... I spent the weekend getting PC Engine CD games. Too bad the site doesn't have too many of them up.

Good idea Shenske. If you could, do a legend of zelda OoT mini box, Mariokart 64 and Star Fox 64, also if you have the time, could you do a Starfox 64 vertical case
TIA

I plan on doing all of that. Problem is time and I aren't getting along very well at the moment.  Even though I'm on summer "break" I'm still pretty swamped with my summer coarse and work. I should have some more time free up in june though  :)

I'm going to whip up some of these mini-cases from your template, however, did you find the "other" side of the boxes from previous covers/raw/somewhere online?  There is a green and purple side, where is the best place to find a decent picture of the last side

I got the no mercy scan from a french box reproduction site. Sometimes they have ntsc stuff too. I took what they had, what we have, combined them and did some extra cleaning.

Any news on if this has gone live yet? I think it's a great Idea, especially since I would love to use these instead of UGC to save space.
You know what else would be sweet? Little boxes to put Gameboy games in. But preferably to the dimensions of the clamshell case.

Only 3/7 of each box is hosted on this site.  I've been looking for the blue/purple spine : yellow flap : red flap : and little tabs for quiet some time now with no avail.  I need new scans before this will take off

I knocked out a quick N64 mini box template. There is not a lot to it but it doesn't need a lot since we we'll just be transferring over the box scans. You can find the download link on my box.net profile in my signature.

!!! Remember that the bottom right red flap and far right blue flaps are duplicates so dont put the cardboard under those flaps, just use them to overlap!!!

Hope it works for you guys  :)
