Title: Looking to buy a Hori N64 Mini Pad or 2. Or 3.

I don't really care what color, but I'd PREFER (in order): clear blue, clear red, clear white, black, blue, red, clear purple, yellow, and lastly green. Any offers?

Oh, I also need a black Gamecube digital gameboy player controller by Hori.  Found one on eBay for a good price.

I use Paypal like none other. And I think I cam do Amazon payments. Not sure, but I use amazon all the time too. Thanks! I have money, but my job pays only so-so, so be gentle, know what I mean?  ;)

They were made about 7 years ago up until 2007. Initially it was import only, but hori got smart and made some for the West. At one time they were $10 new. I was stupid not to get one then. It's not worth $150, that's for sure. I would say about $50 tops for used, $60 tops for new. Those controllers at that price don't sell, which is why they are still there. In the past few months on eBay, some indigo ones have sold brand new for ~$60. But as I said, it's gotta be black. Another (and much cheaper) option would be to get an SNES-GC adapter from retrousb.com, but I personally would rather have the Hori pad.

Holy crap those look genius!  I wish Nintendo used that design for their controllers.

Holy crap those look genius!  I wish Nintendo used that design for their controllers.
The Nintendo brand N64 controller was sort of an experiment for the big N. They weren't sure how well 3D games would be accepted by the general public, so they made it to where both the joystick and the D-pad could be accessed comfortably. Very few games used the D-pad exclusively (the only ones I can think of that were better with the D-pad were the Mortal Kombat games), so that left wing of the trident was hardly used. Many people (including myself) often complain of how fast the joystick wears down. So Hori got with Nintendo and put the Mini Pad out (looks like a Gamecube controller, eh? Where do you think Nintendo got the idea?). The Joystick is phenomenal, much better than any other N64 joystick, but it does have it's faults. For some it's too sensitive. It's pretty much the exact same as the Gamecube, so take that for reference. The D-pad (clearly) sucks. And it is a "mini" pad, so big-handers might find it difficult to use. Why did it never make it over here to the good old USandA (or Europe for that matter)? I dunno.  Japan gets everything good?

The Gamecube digital controller is really only good for the Gameboy Player and a few fighting games. If you look, you'll see a select button. The GCN didn't have one. It's another Y button, which in the GBPlayer is select (along with X, so it could have been either). After playing Legend of Zelda, Minish Cap on the Player recently, I decided that I need one. Those shoulder triggers suck for GBA games, and use of the D-pad is painful. Hori was smart with this one and sold it over here in the West, but I think it was only through online retailers. Estarland had it at $10 a pop about 4 years ago. I should have bought one then, but I was dumb.

BTW, I would also consider one of the Pelican knockoff controllers for the Cube.

They are DEFINITELY not worth as much as the Hori Pad. I'd pay about $10 used, shipped for the Pelican, and $15, MAYBE $20 for new, shipped.

Who at Hori said that THAT place would be the best for the D-Pad?

I suppose this person doesn't work there anymore....

It's good that it isn't used for much on the N64 but still there it looks unusable.

I dunno, but Nintendo seems to think it was a good idea. Look at the Gamecube controller. That D-Pad isn't even worth mentioning. I find it funny with the Hori Mini Pad that the D-pad is in the exact middle. Kinda like how the stick was on the original controller.

BTW, found a black Gameboy player pad on eBay for $43 on eBay, gently used.

Best price I've seen on one in a while. So now I just need a mini pad for the N64.

I bought one of those black Hori Game Boy Player SNES pads a couple years ago. Love it to death. The way I look at it, if you have one of those and a Gameboy Player on your Game Cube you pretty much have youself an advanced SNES. Playing games like Mega Man Zero just couldnt get any better with that pad.

The Players are $20, but I doubt the controllers are. Gamestop didn't get any. I don't think anyone did except online retailers like estarland. I paid like $40 or so for my player, but it had just come out, so I don't regret it.

Is that pelican pad worth the money? I imagine the hori is better, but if spending $30 less means I still get a functional snes-esque pad I'd gladly go for the pelican.

Is that Hori controller really that rare and pricy? I got mine when it was released off play-asia.com for a measly $22 including shipping (which was around 18 Euros at that time). Worth every cent indeed. Got it with the Mega Man Anniversary Collection and it's incredibly good.

...both the controller and the Anniversary Collection ;)

You could always go to retrousb so you can use actual nes and snes controllers on your gamecube/wii.
http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?cPath=22&osCsid=ad686e7114f285275b5dfe677787c6d2

That still doesn't help with the hori n64 problem but at least it may be a much cheaper alternative to the hori "snes" style gcn pad. (I want one of those hori n64 pads to).

Yes, I wholeheartedly recommend the Retrozone SNES adapter to GC over the Hori Digital Pad. I bought one when they were first introduced in Japan (I think I paid like $60 for it!). It does a great job emulating the look of the SNES controller, but for reasons I cannot comprehend, the controller maintains the same Gamecube oddball layout of the face buttons.

With the adapter, you can play Gamecube and Gameboy games as well as Wii VC and a number of Wii games all with your classic real SNES controller all without any lag or cable splicing.

As for the Hori N64 Mini Pad, I also own one. They're expensive, and I'm not sure it's quite worth the price.

Pros:
-An excellent Control stick. It's similar to the Gamecube's but a bit looser and also slightly bigger.
-You can access all the buttons without having to change how you hold the controller.
-Supports all existing controller addons.
-Great conversation piece amongst videogame friends.
-Two Z buttons below L and R. Use whichever one you want.

Cons:
Just like the OEM Gamecube controller, the dpad on the Hori N64 Ministick is placed as an afterthought. Any game that is played with a dpad your much better off to just use a real controller.
-The buttons are too close together.
-Expensive.

If you still want one, check ebay.

I dont know anyhting about that pelican controller but it definetly looks of lesser quality and not quite as confortable as the Hori. Kinda looks like one of those cheap SNES turbo pads which I have and greatly dislike. But the Hori controller also has the official Nintendo GameCube logo printed on the front and stamped on the back so maybe Nintendo approved the quality of the controller to allow them to do that? So I guess the decision is up to you. Take your chances with the pelican to save a few bucks or go with the Hori which I can guarantee you'll be completely satisfied with.

Or go with Shenske's suggestion and get yourself a cable from RetroUSB for 20$ and use a real SNES controller. Not sure how comfortable the buttons will be mapped out tho. But if it was me, Id definetly buy one of those cables over the pelican...

Indeed. The only good thing about the pelican pad is that it's pcb is common ground, which is of course only useful if you want to padhack it and turn it into an arcade stick.

Then again, the OEM Gamecube controller is also conveniently common ground, which lends itself to padhacking all the same. The only difference is that you should be able to pick up a used Pelican for $8 whereas a OEM Gamecube controller goes for $15, and plus you have to deal with those Nintendo tri-wing screws to get at its pcb.

Hori is the exception to this rule as they are a major manufacturer of arcade and controllers in Japan and are well known for their quality, but here's the general rule of thumb:

As far as out of the box performance and quality, third party controllers are always inferior to first party controllers. The only reasons one should ever look into third party controllers are

a. if you need to make a padhack (third party controllers are often cloned, reverse engineered first party controllers that are simplified or easier to solder to)

b. Your hosting a game party with people you dont know or trust, and you want controllers that you won't care as much if they get destroyed.

lt;dr

Don't buy the pelican.

Well, I didn't get the pelican (I only do officially licensed 3rd party, but that d-pad on it is tempting), and I do plan on getting the GC adapter for SNES pads at some point, but as I stated, I already purhased the Hori pad. I also plan to use it for Soul Calibur 2 and a few others, where the mapping of the SNES pad would be odd. I know someone who can get me a Hori N64 pad in Japan for about $30, shipped, but they won't be able to until after the summer. I ain't spending $60 on a controller, unless it's a really good arcade joystick or a Virtual On twin stick. And also, my SNES pads are all so worn that i'd probably be better off with the standard GC controller, or I could buy a good used one at Vintage Stock or Play n trade (or Game Xchange, but their selection sucks) for about $10.  ::) Unless I wanted to break out the Play Messiah pads, but those are happily gaining equity in storage, all nice an new.  ;D

Also as a side note, finding the Pelican pads from a reliable source is easier said than done. Baysoft games and Toys n Joys are notorious rip-offs. But Hori pads show up damn-near everywhere.

Whoa, really? they're......common? How much are the Gamecube Hori Digital Controllers? I've never ever seen one instore, or indeed the US model. I have seen the Pelican one before, but not in years.

Not that I don't believe you, but it takes a lot to wear out an snes pad. I have Atari 2600 joysticks from the very early 80's that aren't worn out, and all my NES controllers still work like a charm 20+ years later.

As you stated, if it is real bad, simply get another one, but if you shop on ebay make sure you pay close attention to the picture and read the description. The Super Famicom itself is quickly approaching its patent expiry and as such ebay is already flooded with Super Famiclone controllers. Unlike the Nintendo ones, these will wear out as they are made of much cheaper materials.

Lastly, regarding Soul Cali 2 GC, I'm pretty sure it allows you to remap the controls as do most fighting games.

The main reason I like my retrozone SNES to GC adapter is to play Ikaruga, Megaman Network Transmission, Megaman X Collection, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Gems Collection, Soul Calibur 2,  Resident Evil 1-3, and the classic Zelda titles.

It's really odd. I can't seem to find the Pelican pads ANYWHERE (aside from Toys N Joys and Baysoft Games, but DON'T EVER ORDER FROM THEM). I bought my SNES used and the controllers obviously took some abuse. It came with one official, 1st run controller and one from the later years that you can still find boxed, new. Both looked like they had been given to a 3 year old with ADHD, a bottle of soda, and a hacksaw. The system looks great tho.

That adapter looks more and more tempting, and I probably will get one, but I gotta ask man: how in the WORLD does it work out with RE1-3?  ;D I assume you give up the ability to pull a 180 in 3, yes?

Still looking for an N64 pad. Best price so far is at GameBaz.com, and it's almost $70 with shipping. Yeowch.

There's a slight bit of misinformation in this thread.

The Hori Digital Controllers *WERE* sold in stores in the US.  The only store that I know of that physically carried them was GameCrazy.  I bought my black one there (after I paid a pretty penny to import an indigo one).

ebay is your friend when you're looking for something super specific. As for the GC RE2 and RE3, they are both PS1 ports so they look nowhere near as good as REmake or RE0. That said, you can play them in high res, they are stripped of the horrid PS1 loadtimes and there's new GC only easy modes that give you the best weapons at the start of the game with unlimited ammo. These versions might be considered sloppy, but they are the best of the bunch.

That easy mode you refer to is only on RE3 and it's not GC only.

RE2 has it as well, just a different name, ARRANGE MODE, and it was on the ps1 dual shock ver.

start with tthe best weapons, and ther eis a quick button command to get infinite ammo

I have a red one. I should have bought more of them because they were between 30 and 50 dollars on eBay when I bought it in 2006 (and they were new!), as opposed to 80 dollars for the used ones on eBay right now.

It's really good, the stick is better than the GameCube's but it's too sensitive and it loses precision, but it's a small price to pay for a stick that doesn't get damaged as easily. In order for its Controller Pak slot not to get damaged (like all my regular N64 controllers'), I always keep it inside the box in which it came, even if it's plugged.

Note: The Hori 64 Pad Mini's stick doesn't work well with USB adapters. When I receive my N64 to GC adapter, I'll check if it works with it.

Also, I own both a Game Boy Player Hori Pad and a SNES to GC adapter, and I love both. Though I like the Hori controller better for some games because it's more sturdy than my worn out SNES controller, and it makes games like Zelda Collectors Edition (Zelda 1 and 2), Viewtiful Joe and other games play awesomely.

The control stick is leaps and bounds better than the offical N64 one, and the comfert of the controller is better as well. But like I said, forget about anything that is best played with the D-pad (Pokémon Panel De Pon, Mischief Makers, etc).

Gotta say, I got the hori GC pad in, and it's freaking amazing! SO comfortable to hold, and GBA games just feel right. Not sure it was worth 40 bones, but damn good all the same.

I'm still keeping my official N64 pad, so it's not like I'm going to be screwed on those games.

Update: Hori pad transaction fell through  :( . Still looking for N64 pad then...

I have a feeling once you get one you'll feel underwhelmed. It's an okay controller, but isn't so fantastic it's worth all the worry you're putting into it. Just relax man. I'm sure you'll get one eventually.

Not so much worried as I am a little let down. I could easily spend $70 and get one now, in the color I want and everything, but that's alot of cash for a "pretty good" controller. I was thinking $50, tops.

Also interested in the ASCII pad now. Looks and feels just like the official pad, but it has turbo. I think about $40 or so would be my max on this one.

I like having the option, but mainly it's for collecting purposes. And because the blue/green color looks really good. I had found one that I could nab for $42, but it was a kinda ugly color. I know, I'm picky. Turbo was a great help in the 8-bit days with mindless button mashers (Urban Champion, anyone?) but has since lost usefulness.

Holy crap I love eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160420466759#ht_500wt_948

just nabbed another controller for the GC (backup I suppose or I might sell for more money), and with my eBay bucks it totalled to £13.52 and that includes shipping! Noice!

I agree. I think the only game I use turbo for is the ship stage on Battletoads/Double Dragon for the SNES. Helps alot! That pad would come in handy for Mario Party's button mashing games. Altho I must say I usually kill anyone who tries to out button mash me lol.

Turbofire is only really  useful in arcade style shooters or run and gun platformers. Since the N64 lacked both genres I still stick by what I said. Mario party might use it too, but in a party game like that, how is turbo fire any fun?
