thanks, what is a good tool to make the cuts that is not expensive to buy

Thanks for putting all these pictures together, I'm sure a lot of people appreciate it. BTW I like the nes, snes & n64 covers you chose to preview with ;)
-
You actually used that ps2 HDD case? ahahahahah
I actually lol'd, as in I seriously laughed out loud.
Great little guide though, very useful for where to cut on NES slots and such.
-
nice little tutorial you put together.
I really wish UGC would have brackets to hold the manuals.....
-

For that I would tell you an X-Acto or a little cutter are good enough, that's what I use.
Also could anybody knows the way to put some Famicom and FDS games inside.
-
I see that you posted where to cut and that you cut with an exacto knife, but how exactly do you cut it? I have an exacto knife and If I try to cut the plastic pieces at the base, it ends up looking like a hack job, and if you cut at the base going straight down to cut through the back cover of the ugc ( so that you cut a chunk out of the ugc) it is to dificult to do without cutting the plastic sleeve. Why am I having so much trouble with this?

Don't over-think it. It's going to look like a hack job because well... that's what it is.

I use a regular razor and wire cutter. A couple wipes from the razor, on pull with the cutters and a quick clean up with the razor. Works like a charm ;D
You may also try to heat the edge of the razor....? i guess lol
-
I seemed to have accidentally renamed the clippers picture on my website to something else, which rendered it unavailable here. Renamed back and placed all pictures into thumbnails so they dont take forever to load. You can still click on the pictures for full view though =D
I use clippers and a razor blade. Very fast and effecient

Any chance of getting these photo links fixed? I recently bought 100 UGC and need to know how to get NES carts put in them. Thanks :)
-
I deleted my hosted pictures on my website from a new member calling me a dick. Didn't realize these were in that folder. I will have to retake the pictures and reupload them again. Please give me a couple hours to do so, I am pressed for time currently

Hi!
Can you please post the pictures again so we can see how to mod the UGC to fit NES carts?
Sorry to bother you.
Thanks

I don't know if he'll ever get around to fixing those links or not, so I took my terrible camera and made a few pics of my own:
SNES games:
N64 games:
Genesis games:
(as you can maybe see, they aren't anywhere near as snug in a UGC as they are in their original cases. They do the job though and if you ask me, look nicer on a shelf).
Master System games:
(same thing as genesis)
If you're wanting to know how to store manuals in this thing, for SNES, N64, etc, I just set them on top of the game like so:
Closes perfectly and doesn't harm the manual at all..

For NES modding:
normal UGC
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3361389/ugc/IMAG0024.JPG)
what you need to remove:
I use a pair of pliers to twist and break those pieces off, and then use an old soldering iron to melt the excess plastic down until its smooth.
looks like this when you're done:
game fits like so:

Meh, sooner or later I will get to it. Pretty busy lately =(
-
I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I can't find it through search - what's the best orientation or modification for a Sonic & Knuckles cart, as well as Super Game Boy? ???
-

for sonic & knuckles I used a standard genesis case and just cut a bit off of the inner holder so that the mushroom top portion fit in, the clips hold it down just fine. as for the super gameboy, I just moded a UGC the same way you would mod for an NES cart. It fits in there very tight.
-
Updated the pictures back, and I also took new ones that I will add when I get home tonight

Super Game Boy you basically mod the case like you were doing it for SNES.
For Sonic and Knuckles, I just put the game in the SNES orientation.

Of course you'd do that AFTER I went to the trouble of uploading new pics :'(

Just wanted to say thank you to AppleQueso for taking the time to up load these pics.

Huh! I love that manual idea. Too bad SNES manuals are slightly larger, and don't fit without a slight bend.
I think that's the first time I've ever seen the black UGC. They seem like collector's items themselves.

Use DVD Cases, problem solved.

Yep those are getting rare.

Up until recently I hadn't had the need for UGCs. However, I just recently purchased a few and I am a little confused. Perhaps a some clarification is in order. Do the Genesis carts slide around in there or are they supposed to be snug enough that they have to be pulled out? My Genesis cartridges seem to slide around (left to right) very freely in the new batch of UGCs (there is almost .5" clearance on either the left or right side of the carts are supposed to be seated). Any ideas, suggestions?
-
While I don't own any Genesis carts, I believe they're similar in size to SNES and N64 carts, both of which fit in the case loosely. None of them 'snap' in or are held snugly in the UGCs such that you need to pull them out to remove them.

Both N64 and Genesis carts are supposed to go in that slot. Genesis carts aren't as wide as N64 (which fits pretty snugly), so it's naturally going to be a little loose.

Thank you both for your reply. I have taken care of the problem by using some adhesive weather stripping (cut to size). At least now when the case is turned to the side the cart doesn't slide down or move around. Works very well!

Has any one been able to fit a Game Genie for NES in the UGC ? ???
I don't know where to cut to make it fit. Please post pictures if you can.
Thanks

Well you have to at least separate the handle from the cart to fit the thing in there.
-
How does Intellivision carts fit in a UGC? they are smaller than the atari carts, Im guessing they just float around in a UGC?
Anyone have a pic of one?
-
What are the dimensions of those carts? I can check for ya just by measuring if nobody else has actually tried to stuff one in.

Hey Shoot him!
What's the name of that snip you have? I haven't been able to find one, and the hardware stores around me have no idea what I'm talking about. I don't really want to drop the hundred bucks on a dremmel. Thanks,

If you don't want to drop $100 on a dremel, I got a generic rotary tool from Auto Zone for $20, but I had to get a pack with a cutter for another $20. Overall, its been a good tool.
But the tool he showed, I believe to be Hoof Clippers.

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby, they sell those things all the time for about 20 bucks, sometimes 15 if you have a coupon

I THINK they're called "End Nippers", I could be wrong. I've got a pair of those and a Dremel, I actually use them both. I don't have a very steady hand with my Dremel so in the beginning I was constantly cutting off too much and melting the plastic to the point where it was hideous. I bought a pair of cheap Craftsman end nippers (I think it was $6) to clip the majority of the plastic off very cleanly, almost like nail clippers. The problem for me is, it can get pretty difficult to reach the tool in plastic areas near the part of the case that closes - so that's when the Dremel now comes in handy.
-
I use these ones myself, works well for me.

You can find dremels brand new on ebay from the ebay stores for like $50. A good investment, does everything.
-
It's often a lot easier to use a snip, depending on how much you new to cut.
-

I had to cut...22 cases, so the multitool did that in about 15 minutes instead of taking me a few minutes per case with nippers. Plus I got a better looking cut as well without damaging the rest of the plastic.
-
I meant how much of the case itself that you have to cut, not how many. Sometimes the dremel can be overkill and actually take more time is what I'm saying (and trust me, I'm a HUGE dremel fan).

Will an action 52 cartridge fit in a universal game case? I've never had a copy to try. Aren't they the same size as EA game carts?

Don't remember where I stuck my Genesis copy, but yep it should fit.

I bought a Game Genie for SNES yesterday and it does not fit into a UGC. on it's own (too thick because of thec artridge holder). I thought it would fit given our cover on the site is for a single wide UGC, but now I am thinking I may have to double up, something I have not done and have no experience doing.

Don't know much about double casing, but this is ONE solution...
Cut to about 3:45 to see what he did to fit his case

I saw that video but I do not want to modify the cart.

Definitely no way to put it in a single and it's tricky to fit in a double to be honest.

My how-to for doubles is in the general section.
-
You also have a youtube vid on Doubles I believe.
I was thinking of doing a double and using some crafting foam to keep it in place.

I don't know if this dude Sonicadvdx has already posted this here, but his videos actually led me to this site in the first place and I've found them very informative.

You actually can fit a Game Genie in a single UGC. But it requires removing that platic tab from the Game Genie. Takes two seconds to remove and you can always put it back on. Its a really tight fit and just barely makes it but if you really want your Game Genie in a single UGC, it should fit. Thats what I did!
-
^^^ I did that initially, but it irked me to no end.
Making doubles is REALLY a lot less work that it might seem and requires the most minimal investment in materials. I use pop-rivets, but it can just as effectively be done with nuts & bolts, or even high-temp hot glue should do the trick. Just make sure to use a high-temp gun/glue. Low-temp isn't quite enough for a permanent bond. The only thing required that probably isn't sitting around the house for most of you guys is the material for the sleeves. The binder sleeves that I use are DIRT cheap and available at most any local office supply store.
So worth it IMO! Plus it opens the doors to storing larger items like controllers, portables, and such ;)
-
Yeah, Im not too big on it either (would much prefer to keep the tab on) but my book shelf doesnt exactly have the room for double casing right now. Maybe something Ill do in the future. For now this works for me.

Space (or rather lack-thereof): the only thing besides wives that can impede the growth of a dorky retro gaming collection :P
-
Any idea how to fit an SNES controller in a UGC?
-
Double ;)
I've seen folks claim to fit one in a single, but it must require a serious amount of cord wrapping trickery to do so.
-
I did it on vhs cases on my opinion its best this way.

Darn. I found some covers for single UGC's in the old dead handheld cover thread and thought it could fit. Guess I should start making some doubles.

I like that! ;) To be honest, my game room is large enough to house my entire collection with maybe even a bit of extra space to play with. But currently I have a roommate who collects just as much as I do (but unfortunetly doesnt take the time to appreciate any of it like I do) so basically the other half of my game room is all his stuff. We have separate bookshelves on opposite walls with our own collection on them. Funny to beleive that about 2 years both of our collections was able to fit on my shelf alone, and now I cant even fit all my own stuff in it any more. I have all my older school stuff stored in the game room (all my ugc games etc.) and then all my handheld and new gen stuff is kept in my room on a few more bookshelves and a giant filing cabinet. All my boxed consoles are stuffed in the top shelf of my closet which sucks!
But sooner or later Ill have the space to fully enjoy my own game room. The roommate is going to have to move out at some point. Me and my girlfriend have been together for about 2 and a half years now and I would say we would be ready to move in together anytime now aside from the fact shes still finishing up school which we both agree she should finish up before she leaves home. So when the time comes, and everything feels right, I should have all the room I need to consolidate my entire collection to one room that I can enjoy all to myself! My girlfriend has her own little collection too that she would bring with her but its not even a fraction of the size of my collection so Ill probably just get her slap it in with my collection and wouldnt even notice. Unless shed like to have her own little shelf to put her collection on.

I can fit it into a single. And yes, it's all about cord trickery. I only keep my spare SNES controller in the box for that reason.

Aww the pictures are gone again. I was looking to do this for a Game Boy Color; I remember there were pictures for Game Boys before but I can't recall how it went.

Updated the pictures back, and I also took new ones that I will add when I get home tonight
Yeah, they are offline for me too! :/

Tx for sharing all this info, I'll have a look into it (need quite some NES modded cases!).
I prefer the updates video by NESComplex, using a multitool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a40Wts21Ucs#t=02m02s

thanks, what is a good tool to make the cuts that is not expensive to buy
For that I would tell you an X-Acto or a little cutter are good enough, that's what I use.
Also could anybody knows the way to put some Famicom and FDS games inside.
I found my Bubble Bobble famicom cartridge, and now I'm wondering too! ;D

Is someone gonna fix the pictures?

If I still have them, ill fix them up.

I am look for a way to store an n64 Rumble pak and have it next to my n64 game and not look out of place.
I am using modified shadowfox gba cases to store ps1 memory cards nest to ps1 games, and a no internals (called a stamp holder case) dvd case with foam inserts to hold my ps2 memory cards.
I would like to continue with this theme in my collection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have your N64 games in UGCs or CGCs, I'd use those doubled or tripled up.

Looks like the pics aren't there, I guess "again". Is there another course for some images on where to cut for an Atari 2600 cart? Thanks!
