Title: WanderingOtaku's Shadowfox Custom Game Covers
Post by: WanderingOtaku on September 19, 2022, 11:51:56 PM
Hello Everyone! I have been working on custom covers for the Shadowfox Custom Game Cases, and felt it would be nice if I shared them here (I have started sharing on reddit as well.) Now, I have created my own template based off of measurements and images from this forum, most notable measurements from Moviefan2k4 and Shenske with help from rockabilly1983's post (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=21816.0), as well as measuring my own boxes. I'll be sharing them here as I create them. I am starting with the games that I have in cases, starting with NES and SNES. I have a few N64 and Gameboy cases now so those will come eventually.

For the actual design, I always liked the idea of having more unique designs for covers with minimal extra imagery (such as legal information, ratings, and so on.) So, I decided to make my own, or in some cases recreate a design I like with some changes to fit the box or to fit my preference. I won't say they are perfect, but I am happy with the results so far.

Hopefully you'll enjoy them. I will be adding them as follow up posts and linking to them on the main post.

Template and Printing:
I have created a photoshop file for my template that has guidelines that help me in placing everything. It is made using Smart Objects and layer masks to keep correct dimensions and file size down. You can download the PS file below, but I have also added a color guide png file for those that wish it.

I made my template based on printing 8.5 x 14 in cardstock paper. If you wish to print on another size, you will need to adjust anything here to your needs.

I will also point out the corner cut marks and "bleed". I print on a home printer so the "bleed" and cutting are wholly unnecessary and does use extra ink. If you do not like that, make sure to keep the bleed area in mind as well as turn off the cut marks. You might consider playing with the layer masks if you understand how to, or just keep the image within the bleed lines.

Thank Yous and Credits
And finally for this first post, I thoroughly thank Shadowfox and Custom Game Cases for the boxes. Also Moviefan2k4, Shenske, and rockabilly1983 for their posts and measurements that gave me initial guidance.

NES: Super Mario Bros. 1 - 3

Here are my covers for Super Mario Bros. 1 - 3 for the NES. These were inspired by two different styles of covers, linked below. I changed the color of the overalls and shirt for each game based on the color scheme for the games and artwork. SMB1 and SMB2 are different colors, though they are really close so it's hard to see. I considered doing SMB1 using the Fire Flower coloring, but I didn't fully like that. I have provided it, however, for anyone that may want it. The original cover has Mario in those colors so it kind of works.

For these I didn't add any screenshots. I'm not against them, I just didn't find a way that I liked with this design. I may some day revisit to see if I can make it work.

NES: The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2: Link's Adventure

Here are some more Custom Game Covers from customgamecases.com. This time we have the NES Zelda games. I was strongly inspired by a few custom covers on VGBA. The only thing I dislike here is the "Hyrule" border is low quality. I might have made a few tweaks to the logo to make them a little more clear when printed, but overall I am quite happy with these.

Inspiration:

2: Custom Zelda 1 cover on VGBA by Brettska99 (https://vgboxart.com/view/43512/the-legend-of-zelda-cover/)

5: The Rose and Vines are from different clip art/free png websites. I don't know the exact sources or authors.
