Title: Slow......
Post by: UncleBob on December 10, 2009, 12:10:11 AM
It seems like the cover uploading has slowed to a halt... the same handful of covers has been on the front page for awhile now. :(

How dare y'all have lives outside of TCP?

We dont have ftp access at the moment, and have not had for a few weeks (hence no new covers). This is down to a security incident that took down some templates at the same time, as some people have no doubt noticed. Hopefully Snowcone will sort it out soon and uploading can begin again.

I copied this from the admin board so that everyone knows what's going on and why there are no updates at the moment.

Got a call from our host today regarding some malicious activity on our account. Turns out one of the FTP accounts for you guys got compromised and there was a paypal look alike site setup on our space that hit me with roughly 5500 emails overnight. For now, I am disabling all FTP accounts to the site. Tomorrow we can figure out a better way to let you guys do what you need without FTP access because if it happens again our account will be closed.

(...)

Could this incident have something to do with why some template links are dead?

Yes actually. The users no doubt deleted a few files in an effort to check if they had write access to the filesystem. Unfortunately I think the idea of regularly changing passwords is a good one, but it presents a big pain in the ass for me and you in managing those accounts. For now, only the compromised account is disabled, but I'll be locking them all down today just as a safety measure.

Ah!  Well, I'm glad to know it's a fixable problem with the site and not that everyone had left. ;)

Could this have anything to do with the spam posts coming in more often?

No. When you hit that report button for spam, it emails every mod about it. Please use it.

I try to catch Snowcone on IM - but he's never around. :(  I'll go with the report button from now on though - I hate to report SPAM posts that I'm sure others have already reported as I know how quickly those report emails add up from two other forums I moderate... but if you say so. ;)

Well, do whatever you want. There's probably a system in place so that multiple reports of the same post don't spam emails. It's better than waiting for our admins to stumble upon the spam. Plus, Snowcone has ninja response times for emails.

I bet you ten bucks you'll just get another "No." haha.  I wouldn't worry it'll be fixed when it's fixed.

Hey,

Why do we need a FTP?

 Ok, I understand thats way easy to work on that system that uploads straight using web/ftp scripts, and I do belive its even easyer using ftp clients, but this site cannot stop because of this;

What Im trying to say is:
This project is not special due its FTPs, it is special due the quality of its covers.

Why this problem is not fixed, why dont we start to use the forums to upload, meanwhile, create a Forum for Cover Uploads, we can upload them as attachments of posts, admins can download perfectly, check it, and I do belive they can setup them using their administration controls without need ftp...

Im a cover uploader, I would have no problem upload them as post attachments.. (indeed I would enjoy to comment.. :P)

 Well, thats my 2 cents...

Yes let's do that. I'm missing many covers, of which many I have heard have been uploaded to the site but not yet posted permanently on the site.

Covers can still be uploaded to the 'uploads' section, can't they? If so, just do that and add the link to it when you post the preview, like the7k did with his recent Arkham Asylum covers. Or use a box.net account. There isn't any reason why the flow of covers should stop while ftp access is down. It just means people will have to check the forums for new covers.

See what Tik means is that we need the use of FTP to move the covers into the ready folder.

The admin panel that we use to add a cover to the site will only read covers in the Ready Folder... So if we can't move them to that folder, the panel dose not see them and we are unable to add the cover to the site itself.

I mean when someone uploads a cover, they get direct link to it.
Just post that link to the forums so others can go get the cover.
Like the7k does here:

Nothing hard about it.
