man you'd think it would be common sense to not use pirated games to play online.

even if they had stayed offline with the burnt games and only used originals online on same machine, they'd still get banned.  pre-release copies are a deffo give away though, and i can't believe people are actually complaining about being banned.    Although i would have thought it in microsofts interest NOT to ban people, as they make most of their cash from the online service.  The people that have 100's of backups are not going to have 100's of originals - so they won't make cash back there - also i would have thought that alot of people who have been banned now will just go for a PS3 at christmas, as the online service is free, and not THAT different from live any more.  And wireless built in.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure most of these people had it coming. It's not like Microsoft hasn't pulled off moves FAR more dickish than this.

Banning people from Xbox Live is well within their power. No longer honoring the RROD 3-Year Warranty if you have a modded Xbox 360 is also well within their power.

I don't think this situation will actually drive people to get PS3s, as these pirates would still want a machine that could play burnt games. If anything, this will actually drive Microsoft's sales up when they all try to get new X360s - and maybe this time, they'll be smart about it.

Most people who go from a 360 to a PS3, do so because they're sick and tired of dealing with RROD. I talked to one guy who had 7 360s RROD on him before he finally switched.

Off topic, but there's no reason why anyone should go through 7 360s. The RROD is fixable. all you need is some common tools and materials and the willingness to fix it yourself. I wrote a tutorial on how to fix the RROD a while ago and anyone whose followed it can attest that it does indeed work. Sending systems back to M$ only will have them send another system with the same problem. Its better just to tear it apart yourself and fix it in an evening yourself than to wait 4-8 weeks. The first revisions of he hardware were flawed no question, but they are not beyond repair 90% of the time.

Yeah, I've heard that RROD is fixable in a good number of cases, but it's not like I was talking with a friend or something. This was just a customer at GameStop. Most of them don't know any better.

Even if you fix it yourself with x-clamp and baking etc. this is no guarantee that it won't RROD again....

There are far more problems than just the graphics chip stuff on the old 360s... The new Jaspers on the other hand are as stable as a PS3 maybe in my oppinion... Maybe....

I dunno - I've had a good friend have his Jasper unit go out on him twice, and another friend go out on him as well. Oddly enough, I was present at all times when their Jasper units RROD'd. Perhaps I'm a messenger of death.

Really? I thought(or better hoped ;) ) with the Jasper boards they finally got a hold of all the overheating problems(New graphics chip, new proccessor, better soldering technic used)... *sigh*

It helps, but it still happens. The risk has simply been reduced.

Now that I think about it, I also remember hearing a co-worker of mine had an elite go out on him within a week of him getting it, and this was a few months ago. Granted, I don't know if Elites use Jasper chips yet (I remember hearing when the Jaspers first released, they were limited to Arcade units), but I would think it stupid of Microsoft not to switch all of their chips to Jasper after it proved somewhat effective.

As far as I'm concerned, you should consider that the RROD can happen to any model 360, so learning how to fix it should be something every owner knows just like how every NES owner knows the age-old blowing technique to get their games to run. You're right tiktektak when you say that fixing the RROD does not guarantee it won't reoccur. Honestly, the only thing you can do is fix it when it backs and fix it when it breaks again.

Why do I bring this up? A lot of people send them back to M$ for them to do the same thing you could do yourself or worse, even buy a new system every time it happens. You don't need to do that. My 2005 360 has had the RROD 3 times over the years and it's still alive and kicking today. I fully suspect that my system will once again die within probably the next year, but that's just a fact of life when you have a 360.

on the plus side that means you can pick up an RRoD'd 360 dirt cheap and bring it back to life yourself.

Yeah, I've kinda thought about doing this myself. A lot of people trade in RROD'd 360s to GameStop to get new ones. If I just give them the same money they'd get in store credit, I could try it myself. If I fail, I'll just trade it in to GameStop and get the store credit. If I succeed, I'll have a 360.

Gamestop will take a RROD 360?  If so, what do they give you?   ???

Most of the ones I have seen have already been opened and the seal is gone/broken.
I would not think they would take one with a broken seal.

I have fixed a few for family members and got myself one really cheap and was able to fix it.

My main concern was that someone tried the towel method and fried it beyond fixing, however, now I would be worried that it is a banned console. If it also had the RROD, there would be no way to test it. (Not that I don't trust people on Craigslist, or anything....  >:( )

I see lots of RROD units in pawn shops for $50.00 or less.

They charge a "defect fee" so i think they take off ~$25. I can't remember, i work tomorrow so i can figure out then.

I could care less about any of this because I generally don't care for online gaming much.

Well, for a 360 owner for about 2 days now.... I can tell you, I suck at HALO 3.  :P
(online and offline)

At least my console is not banned, does not appear to be modded in anyway.
Hardest part so far was getting rid of the the parental controls and resetting the console to factory settings.

Even though I wouldn't plan to play online, I would like to get some of those XBLA Indy titles.
