Title: Mancave progress
Post by: el_goose on May 17, 2019, 09:53:22 PM
First of all, I want to thank everybody that have contributed to covers and guides, without this site my collection would look a lot different. I bought my first house back in September 2018 and am finally getting around to putting my basement together. I started with the easiest project which was shelving. I had random bookcases from different stores but everything was either too tall or short for the space.

The next project is going to be a custom entertainment center that will house 16 systems with room for more. I plan on having LEDs to show off the consoles and the bottom will be cabinets that will have storage for controllers/accessories and the other side will have HDMI/AV switch boxes and surge protectors.

Nice work on the book cases. Care to share the plans on them?

As for power, I have a video that can help you out.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=500QtQlYWyg
I really enjoy these switched power supplies and it can help on your power bill too.

Don't forget to make breathing room for the consoles too.
Any system that has a fan built in, need to have a good amount of space.

What kind of TV?
Including a CRT in the build?
Are you getting a soundbar?
What kind of A\V switchers?
Any upscalers in the plans?  (I would suggest the Retrotink 2X) https://youtu.be/l48jWIBxgRc

My fave thing in room tours is the System and TV setup. (if you can not tell)

If you need any help or suggestions please feel free to ask. Myself and a few others would be happy to help.

Very nice indeed! I've felt your pain - there aren't too many options available, especially for mixed media these days... and just when I had found a great storage solution for housing my collection in IKEA Billy bookcases, the manufacturer decides not to make them anymore.  :'( Oh well.

Anyway, custom is always the best option. Glad to see you finally found the time!

I can share plans later but it was very easy. Everything was done with 1" x 6" common pine wood. The horizontals are single piece (77", 26" and 44") and the vertical supports are 9". Total lumber was around $100 and only needed a single pint of black paint.

I really like your idea for power supplies so I will look into those.
For ventilation I toyed around with the idea of adding small CPU fans into the back of the cabinet that would I could control with a Raspberry Pi that would have a temp sensors. Also thought about using pegboard to let everything vent and also makes cable management easy because you can just zip tie cables to the holes.
Most likely going to have a soundbar but also looking into a decent surround sound system.
I currently have a 55" Sony 4k but not opposed to adding a CRT. I would rather add a retroTINK to keep everything clean, I've seen similar devices so I'm still doing research.

I will update with progress when the building begins!
