Title: House fire destroyed my home
Post by: Jl3legend on September 22, 2018, 07:56:27 AM
I've unfortunately had a terrible house fire 2 weeks ago and it took almost everything, including my dog. My game room is entirely gone, 30 systems and approximately 2100 games. As some of you may now, I was in the process of scanning many covers in, I had already posted around 600 in the forums. Unfortunately, more are not coming. The ones I needed to fix will also not be getting fixed. I apologize to those of you that may have been waiting on some covers from me. This is a very devestating loss to me, parts of my collection were even from my childhood

EDIT 10/1/18

Life has taken a sharp turn for the worst, as my mother was just diagnosed with stage 3-4 cancer. I'm extremely devastated right now....

Oh my god. I saw the images a few days ago and felt sick to my stomach. Never would have thought it'd have happened to someone from here. My most sincere condolences. The games are a tremendous loss, for sure, but I'm crushed to hear that you lost a pet and family member as well. I'm so sorry for your loss.

That is just awful.  It’s one thing to lose stuff, it’s another to lose someone or a beloved pet :(

I sincerely hope that the process of recovery is as painless as humanly possible. Best of luck to ya.

So sorry for the loss of your doggy mate.  I can’t imagine how that feels.  The rest is just stuff, and stuff can be replaced with more stuff.  I truly hope he didn’t suffer. 😢

I don't normally swear but, Fuck, that's awful!

As sheep said, game's and consoles are just stuff, the important thing is that You're alive, and I hope in time you can recover...

My deepest sympathies, it sucks when stuff like that happens.  I lost a lot of arcade machines, nintendo power magazines and my two pet cats to a fire years ago when I lived in Wisconsin.  I hope that time will help you heal through this process.

This really sucks man :( Sorry to hear that you lost a pet besides everything else.  Thank you for all the scans you provided and I hope this doesn't totally kill your interest in collecting.

I'm not sure how I feel about it anymore to be honest. It was an absolute hit to everything I've ever worked for. I might rebuild a bit, but I don't think I'll ever plan to have it that large again

Life throws curveballs.

Life threw me a whopper in 2011, and I’m a better and happier person because of it.

I hope you can make a big-ass cup of lemonade out of this!

I've just updated the original post, life isn't being very kind right now. My mother was just diagnosed with stage 3-4 cancer....

I'm very sorry for your loss, that is horrible all around.  I lost my dad to cancer 4 years back and it's the worst, spend as much time with her as you can.

I highly recommend to anyone to INSURE your collection, regardless of your living situation.  If you think about what it would cost to replace your collection---it's worth the trouble.   If you have insurance, specifically talk to your agent and make sure its covered and the necessary steps are taken.

That looks discusting.
If those are carts some of those bottom row games might still have functioning boards, so they just need new shells.
But if those are disc cases...

And depending on cancer Stage 3-4 can still be recoverable.

That's insane.  I can't imagine if my whole collection was destroyed like that.  I probably wouldn't even have the mental energy to try and re-build it.  I'd just get my top 3-4 favorite retro consoles and get some everdrives or something. Maybe a few of my favorite games on cart.

Jesus dude..... I am so so so sorry.  I feel just terrible about everything.  Life is a bitch but you will get through this.  You will be ok.  It may take time but you will.

I've went through about everything, and I was able to save around 300, as long as the heat didn't get the boards/disc data. I spot checked a few and they appeared ok. That bottom shelf was gba, the smoke damage was horrible inside and I likely won't chance it. Some of the carts were a bit warped. I was able to save almost everything for ds, 3ds, switch, wii, and wii u. A couple from everything else, but it's odd that the Nintendo stuff survived and almost nothing else. Wonder what they put in their stuff lol.

Yes, that picture was my facebook post.

Looking at those pictures made me sad. Everything is now fried crispy. What a shame! I'm very sorry, Jl3legend. I'm always here if you need someone to talk to.

Most of my switch library, which had the least amount of fire, do not work. Keeps giving me read errors no matter how much I clean it. Don't know if I wanna chance using them in the new switch, as it may or may not cause damage. Hard to say how that will work, but it's not looking good for what I pulled out of the fire

My prayers to you and your family, especially regarding your mother's illness. My Mom died from lung cancer, very suddenly 3 years ago. So I have some experience, knowing what its like to have your whole world flipped upside down. God Bless, and keep the faith.

Just an update here. Mom passed about 5 weeks ago. Shes hopefully in a better place though where shes no longer hurting. I've been recollecting again, though it is more current gen than anything else. I have roughly 60 covers that are ready to be scanned. Unfortunately, the scanner I bought seems to he junk. After one scan, it appears to have broken and no longer scans. Hopefully tomorrow I will be attempting to get a better one

House fire. Took everything inside. I had a couple hundred surviving games, but they are pretty smoke damaged and discolored.
