Title: HOLY DOWNTIME
Post by: Snowcone on July 26, 2018, 06:40:04 PM
Sorry for the site issues this week everyone. About noon east coast time we got hit with a spike of about 600,000 requests that triggered a DDOS mechanism with our host and CDN and they took it all down. It took me until later that night to get service back online. I have no clue if it was malicious or someone trying to script a download of all the covers that went sideways. Either way, not good.

If it was someone trying to get all the covers, it may not be a horrible idea to get a torrent up of the site's content if that's not too much of a pain in the ass.

In the past others have requested this and been met with a resounding NO!

Anyone who needs fast access to every cover on the site does not have good intentions in mind.

Patman, why would you need that many covers.  You obviously don't own have every game in existence.  If you don't own them, then why do you need them.

I'm not calling you out, just saying.  In over 10+ years of people crying and pleading for torrent collections, not one person has persuaded us otherwise.

I agree, that bulk downloads can make sense.

But the mayor issue with bulk downloads would be the additional cost and work it might require. Even a torrent would have to be managed and might need a paid account. This site is free and has almost no income. So compromises have to be made.  ;)

Snowcone has still not managed to address the broken upload in almost half a year now. That makes it seem unlikely that there will ever be any other sort of changes to the site.  :(

They could be well intentioned. When I was building my white N64 covers I needed to download every available N64 cover plus a ton of raw scans and such.  And I’ve downloaded a ton of other covers for personal use as well (usually to extract logos from).

Believe it or not, I don't come to the forums daily so sometimes things like this don't hit my radar for a really long time. I'm committed to keeping this site online on my dime for as long as possible, which for the moment is forever.

It's not a bad idea, but if we do that, then we should shut down the site and move this to a reddit community with associated BT content. At that point our content quality might suffer and the community might wither. I'd love to facilitate this type of bulk downloading but the other side to this is that anyone could build a new version of our site overnight. So it's a strange double edged sword here.

Thanks for getting it fixed and for hosting the site man!  Honestly, if you ever want to take donations for the site, I'd be happy to chip in a few bucks to help out.  I know hosting isn't cheap let alone being the primary admin.

We had a donation link in the early days but i never want folks to feel compelled to throw money my way. paypal@snackbar-games.com is the best way though

There should be a tasteful way to passively mention the ability to donate.  It should look official so that people know the money is going to the right cause.

It is not about you personally. I am sure, you have your reasons and I know, that you don't do this for profit. ;)

I just feel like 6 month response time is way too much and I wish there would be more comunication with users.
It is alright, if you are not able to fix an issue right away, but at least let people know that you are aware of the problem and that it will get fixed eventually.

It is nice to hear that you still feel commited to this project though.  :)

Ever since the site went down and then came back online, I've been intermittently going from being "banned" to having access.  It seems to happen every few days.  i.e. I'll be able to log on and post for a few days, then I'll be banned for a couple of days.  Not sure if this is affecting anyone else, but I spoke with Shenske and he doesn't know what the issue is (other than me having a zillion different IP addresses from which I've logged in).

Until I clear cookies, I will see this message indefinitely.

We know and this has affected quite a few members.
It most likely has something to do with this change implemented to the site while ago:
http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=24063.0
As it cached stuff closer to the user.

Quote from my message on things I've noticed:
Quote
The ban thing too started when you did the Cloudfire thing, and it's sort of "fake ban"
When I check member that sayshe/she is banned they are not according to their profile.
To my knowledge in these cases none of us have actually banned anyone, and 99.9% (one has not been solved so far but not sure was he real) of the time asking member to clear their browser's cookies and cache solves the "fake ban".

Quote from Snowcone (also on front page):

In a recent change that put the content here at The Cover Project behind a CDN, we've noticed a huge influx of messages indicating that people were banned. In researching this issue, it seems that the forums are showing this message to users that are not in fact banned.

If you are seeing a banned message, please clear your cookies and cache and try to login again. In virtually all cases, this has resolved the issue. If you can't get that to work, as always, you can reach the admin team at forum_admins [at] thecoverproject.net

I had the "banned" issues several months ago, and luckily it hasn't hit me again since.  I know several others have had the issue as well and Snowcone has a new thread about it that he posted yesterday.  Luckily it seems to be an easy fix.  I'm curious if anyone who has cleared their cache has had the issue come back again or if it's been a permanent fix (so far).

The interesting part is that i'm not caching the forums in the CDN. It's completely bypassing it. I've got some more reading to do to ensure it doesn't continue. For all I know.... we have accidentally banned one of the CloudFlare IPs that is proxying the forum traffic.

I get it. The forum and site admins are here because I can't always be. As long as I'm alive and have money, this site will stay online.

Almost every day,  across multiple devices at the moment.  Hasn’t happened today yet, but it did yesterday.

This doesn't fix the problem for me.  I've tried on numerous PCs, with a few browsers, and my phone.  Clearing it only means I can access the forum, but as soon as I try to login, BAN.

Then it'll just randomly allow me to login a day or two later.

I've got the same problem that Wiggy has.
It happens really random and across multiple devices.

My phone has a non-static IP address. Most do.

I suggested the IP address, because you said the issue occurs on multiple divices (at the same time?) and resolves itself every 1-2 days.

If all of your devices use the same network (router), they all use the same IP address going out. And dynamic addresses are often changed every 1-2 days...  :)

You could test this theory, by manually changing your IP address in your router settings.

I’m not using WiFi on my phone.

I’ve also tried from my home and business networks.
