Title: A Rose's Collection
Post by: Cover-Rose on March 09, 2018, 07:52:11 AM
Hello everybody.

You don't know me yet, but my name is (apparently) Cover-Rose, but most of the time I've got the moniker Rosa Canina.
I am a PAL (and somewhat JNTSC) collector from germany, programm my own little games and I write (and sell) books.
Also I have a regular job. Because... nothing pays the bills at the moment, except this lame ass normal job. Hahaha.
I mainly collect ALL THE SYSTEMS. So no favourite here. I just buy what interests me. So some games a quite common,
some games are more expensive and some type of "must have" games are completely missing here.

Well, what I really wanted to show you today is my own collection of just shy of 700 games (< I think this sentence is correct like this?),
with Games ranging from Atari 2600 up until the current generation. Except for die DVD-Style-Games I mostly use my own created
boxes - for a couple of reasons:
Because of that I barely used the covers from this site 1:1. Instead I opted for my own approach, most of the times with 2 games in
1 Box, sorted by genre. Let's give you a few pictures and talk about that:

This is a nice first example. Here you can see two double-case designs for Atari 2600 and Famicom. I used only Logos and Screenshots
on the famicom boxes, because it's really hard to find printable material for japanese famicom games. Also I use boxes from a german
seller. They are like gift-boxes and don't come near your fancy cases you have in the USA available. But those are REALLY expensive
to import. Like... shipping was almost the cost of the boxes itself...
Also I use high-quality photo-prints, which is pretty cheap here in Germany, because of services in local drugstores (Cewe Fotodruck,
for you german guys). The measurements from them are a little bit of and I needed a few test rounds, but now everything looks
really high quality.

Another Example. Only 1 NES-Games per Box, there is no more room in there. But SNES uses two (and yes, thats not a german Chrono
Trigger. Of course it isn't... *crys in a corner*). Also something I really wanted to talk about... I freaking hate those spines with different
designs on almost ALL consoles. But I still like the original Logo-Artwork of most games. So I recreated the style of all Logos with one single
Font, so everything has a uniform look, but still is recognizable.

Just a example of my N64-Cases. I use advertisement-slogans on the boxes. I think this here was from a PAL advertisement, don't know if
USA had the same slogan back then.

One thing I really despised at first was my newest member in my collection: My Sega Saturn. I ordered a modded Console (Region Mod onyl)
and also quite a few games from Germany and Japan. But WHAT THE FRICKING HELL... every german game I got had a different style and
size for the original box! And I thought the PS3 was a Design-Desaster...

So I made my own design, inspired by the japanese CD-Case-Design:

Oh, and dont cry for the original boxes. I own ALL of my original boxes. I would never throw away my "Resident Evill 2 PAL N64 near mint
condition"-Box. I am not crazy. But I like to play my games. Because of this... I need to open boxes quick and I dont want to accidentely
rip my precious (< gollums voice goes in here) boxes. That's the reason I made all this boxes, effectively.

Last but not least: My whole collection:

Oh, there got a few VHS into that picture...

Like I said, nearly 700 games. Only a few games are not in the picture (mainly because I have a single glass vitrine with some special edition in
there, like my Life Is Strange-Games, Bayonetta Wii U Special Edition etc - or my custom cases for my own games.

So, what does coverproject.net think about this collection. I used your site a lot in the last 2 years, but in the end most of the time you
just delivered the artwork for my own creations. Sorry about that ;)
If someone wants more details about... anything... just ask.

And have a nice day

Also every grammatical error is just for you. Like I said... I am from Germany. While I write my own books - and need English quite often at
my workplace - I am not that good at writing this language.

Hello and welcome.  That's an interesting way to save space.  Those covers look great.

I guess the biggest question I have is, how do you decide which two games go together in one case?  Some combos seem obvious like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but others seem more random.  If you buy a new game, is it possible you would shuffle the combos around, or once two games are together, do they always stay that way?

Mostly based on genre or similar style. There are a few boxes, where I did not have similar enough games and just went with what I have.
I am pretty happy with my SNES-Style, but I have Road Rash 64 and Smash Bros 64 for the Nintendo 64 (who would have thought?) in one
box which is... my least favourite box-combo. But those were my last two N64 games. BUTwhen I buy another Racer for the console, I will
put the new game in the box together witch Road Rash 64 and create a new Smash Bros Box (nothing quite goes with Smash on the N64...).
It could take a while, (good) N64 PAL Games are not cheap. Until then the Smash Bros Characters duke it out on Motorcycles in one
box... or so. XD The same with Super Mario Bros 3 and Macross for Famicom... brr, that hurts my brain just thinking about that.

Also... I am a bit of a perfectionist. Those boxes are like Version 5.0 from the last 2 years. I will redo some designs/combinations just because I
have a great idea for a box-style. It happens... a lot. Just NOW I am thinking about redoing my famicom design. BUT first I need a good game
to go with macross and one as a companion to smb3.

Love the cassette covers.  Especially with them slightly spaced apart in their own slots.

I really love how uniform the spines of NES games look.

Hello and Welcome to a great site full of great people.

I am interested in your gift boxes. Do you have a photo of the inside.

Really great space saving idea. The more space you save the more games you can collect  ;D

Yeah, I have:

They are far from perfect, like those american boxes made especially for games. But like I said, those are almost unbuyable for european
collectors. I have a few (I use them to store my Nintendo 3DS and my japanese Sega Genesis Game Cotton), but those were like 5 bucks
per case.

The ones I buy come from kronenberg, a german seller (there is a thread about those in this forum). The have different sizes. I have many
FAT ONES still in posession, which I used for NES when I had more space (fits NES Games + Manual, but is very loose), nowadays I use the
thinner ones. Atari fits... well, it works. It is a slight little bulge. The other cartridges fit pretty nice, although I thick manual, like a multi-language
PAL Manual can be too thick to fit into that damn case together with the game. Because I own just a few manuals I have a thick box for
manuals only.
Also... I use some old custom made cartridge boxes in those boxes (you can see them in the picture). For a select few boxes I also made
cardboard-separator, like for my Memory-Card-Boxes.

Really great space saving idea. The more space you save the more games you can collect  ;D

Yeah, you got me ;)

P.S.
The Big Boxes fit a Special Edition PSP Game PERFECTLY - like Persona 2 or Tactics Ogre.

Thanks for Sharing. I totally understand how expensive UGC's are for us Europe people. Its nice to see something a bit different. I don't know but 28mm Spine 8 way DVD cases are the poor mans equivalent of the Universal Game Case.

Gosh, those cases must be quite large to house 2X N64 games in their original boxes. A good way to save space tho I suppose and keep out unwanted dust and sunlight.

No no no! You misread something there. Those boxes are just cartridge-sized, not full boxes. A PSP-Special Edition Box (like for Tactics Ogre or P2)
fits perfectly in the bigger variation of the box. Those shown in the pictures are (just) as big as 2 SNES Games stacked on top of another.
But two years ago, when I started to collect for real, I created little cartridge-sized boxes for protection against the sunlight. I did not want to
throw them away, because of this I put those in my new cases, too.  ;D

They are not really DVD Cases. They are gift boxes, where you can buy different holders for different types of media. USB Sticks, CD/DVD/BluRays, Gift-Cards and many more.
While I agree with you, that those UGC are nice, when you open it, mine are far from "a poor mans choice". And with the really high-quality photo-covers they look really
fancy in person and on a shelf. :)

Well, I just make the best out of the things I am able to buy. Maybe, someday in the future, those UGC become payable here in europe, too. Would I change my cases then? Well, depending on the room I have.
If I ever go "Solo Game per Case" again... then yes. :)

ah just with seeing the 2 boxes inside the case. so they are mini boxes ;o) cute. Seems a shame to hide them away in a case. If you have taken the time to scale down the boxes and then not display them. ???

I found a loose Neo Geo CD Game for pennies and decided to pick it up, even though I don't have any kind of SNK-Machine at home (but
I will have one... one day). Because it had no case at all and your site provides just custom dvd cases for this game (and I did not really like
the original case design in this particular case... and I don't like my own reproduction cover to look "real", so they can not fool anyone when
I die or sell my games). I decided to try my best for a "Neo Geo CD Case-Cover" which is a bit more... Neo Geo.
Basically... I added Red and Stripes.

What do you think?

No backside at the moment, still trying to find a nice design for it. And I still need to clean the artwork a bit.
