Title: Introducing: The Marvel vs. Capcom Collection
Post by: Dynamo of Eternia on February 23, 2018, 05:26:44 PM
ARE YOU READY, TRUE BELIEVERS?!

Hi there,

I'm new to the forums, though I've lurked here and there, and have downloaded covers from the site in the past.

I dabble in some custom cover making here and there for movies and video games.

So this is a project that I started few months ago, and got pretty far, but kind of stopped for a while.

I'm a really big fan of the Marvel/Capcom crossover games.  I have all of them for some gaming system or another (in most cases, more than one, including the Saturn imports of X-Men vs SF and Marvel vs SF).  I even enjoy Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, despite its downsides.

I decided to do a "Marvel vs. Capcom Collection" series of covers for all of them, including the non-crossover fighting titles that preceeded them, "X-Men Children of the Atom" and "Marvel Super Heroes."

I just wanted the cases to represent the games, and not the systems that they are one, since they are spread across many consoles anyway.   This way anyone who wants to use them can do so no matter what consoles they have these games on.  In my case, I do intend to eventually print these up, and for the games that I have for more than one console, I'll be using multi disc cases to put the different releases of the same title together.

Some required A LOT more work than others, just based on available resources and such.  In some cases I more-or-less recreated/rebuilt the title texts for the ones that I couldn't find high enough quality versions for.  I still plan to do more work on the first Marvel vs. Capcom's title logo.

I went with DVD size cases since I didn't want to use console specific cases/styles (i.e. PS3, PS4, Xbox One), and wanted to be able to use some multi-disc case options.

For some reason the "Marvel vs Capcom Collection" logo at the top of each cover ended up with a case of aliasing in most of the images below.  It's not like that in the main file, so I believe that has something to do with the rendering the program did for the pics below.  At the bottom I do have a separate pic of "Marvel Super Heroes" from a front view to better show the "collection" logo.

The spines of the boxes are done in such a way that they work fine individually, but when lined up they have a combined background image of two worlds "colliding" with each other.

While I know there are some big differences between them, for my purposes, I just want to have one case that represents both the regular and "Ultimate" versions of "Marvel vs. Capcom 3."  So my initial version, as seen below, has the "Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds" logo on the front, and the "Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3" logo on the back, with the spine just saying "Marvel vs. Capcom 3."

Below are the WIP pics of these covers, along with a pic of the spines lined up.

I actually already shared these images with a Marvel vs. Capcom Facebook group, and started working on additional options based on some feedback (for which some additional images have been added).

Some people expressed interest in there being separate cases for the two versions of MvC3.  So I began work on an alternate version of this set.

The pics below show the two separate cases for the two versions of MvC3, and a new picture of the spines of the cases all lined up.  All of the spines in the below pic are at least slightly different than the ones in the previous pic above. I recentered the "worlds colliding" image across them all to commodate the additional DVD case.  Some of the character pics on the spine got shifted over, with Captain Commando being added to the MvC1 spine. The front and back of all of the other cases will still look the same as the ones above, only the adjusted spines are different.

I'll probably also make a set with out the worlds-colliding combined image (it will probably just be a solid colored background), that way for anyone who has some of the games but not all of them, and want some cohesive looking covers for the games that they do have, there will be an option.

I'd say the project is in the ballpark of 95%-ish done at this point.  There's still some more work to do.

Once done, I plan to share all of the variants of these for people to download.

I'm also curious as to anyone's thoughts on the general concept of having a cohesive series of cases like this that represent all of the games in a series, and aren't console specific.  I would probably limit this to disc based games, mostly because for cart games, or especially series that span across both carts and discs, it would be very tough to make a cohesive looking set (though I'm not necessarily opposed to trying).

I might do more if there is interest.  I'm kicking around the idea of doing a set for all of the disc-based Mortal Kombat games, and maybe all Mario and Zelda games from the Gamecube era and forward.

Welcome to the site.
Not bad introduction.

Nice looking covers.

There has been few this kind of sets here on the boards.

I think at least Mega Man on NES and Cross-platform Zelda (up to original Twilight Princess?).
I have toyed around doing Final Fantasy and Family Fun Fitbess ones, but Final Fantasy collection is still growing too fast, and for FFF I still lack some good raws.

wow these look beautiful! I'm also a long time fan of the series and love the cohesiveness of these covers. I can't wait to see your finished products and even the other series' that you have planned!

I for one would love to see any Final Fantasy set that has some sort of cohesiveness! I saw a few people start one but they unfortunately never got finished for that exact reason.

I like them, but the backs are sort of inconsistent, as only 3 of them have game details/ screenshots on the back. I'd also put system icons on the spines, or somewhere, though maybe users can do that themselves for whatever discs they end up using. Of course, for the early games,  I think Saturn and Dreamcast are the only options (at least the only GOOD options).
