Title: Using Switch cases for TG16/PCE games
Post by: noodohs on February 20, 2018, 09:08:36 AM
I see there are many covers for TG16 games already here, but they are all sized for standard DVD cases. That seems odd to me since those cases are way bigger than they need to be and would need modification to even work well. On the other hand, a Switch case is a pretty good size and the document tabs hold the HuCard in pretty nicely, so no modification necessary. On top of that, they are readily available and pretty cheap (my local shop sells them for 99 cents). Can we start sizing and uploading covers for those dimensions instead?

The artwork would take a real hit here I would think.  I'm just using modified CD cases for my loose TG16 games as that's what they originally came in.

Why do you say that? It would be scaled down, for sure, but there's a lot of empty space on the covers anyway that could just be filled in. I will be printing one tonight and can post a picture when it's done.

Obviously, most of those covers were made before the Switch was a thing.  I'm sure a Switch case would be a better solution, but I'm with Bear in that I prefer to use CD jewel cases for my games since they are closer to the originals.  Unfortunately, there has never been a huge TG16 presence here, so you might not find anyone looking to covert the covers over, but you never know.  You could always try to make some yourself which would be a great way to learn.  The nice thing is that since some Switch covers have already been created, you at least have a template for the outer dimensions and the spine width.  You could start with scaling down the DVD covers and see how that looks.  If you do that, share them here.  If they look good, they might take off and you might get more people interested.  My PCE collection is too small for me to look into different case options.  It's a system I love to play, but I don't enjoy buying for so I stick with the Everdrive.

I've made quite a few covers at this point. I use the BitBox cases and there are several games in my collection that don't have covers, so I have to go about resizing covers from here. That plus I like using jewel cases for Saturn, Sega CD, Dreamcast, and PS1 games, but the covers here are mostly DVD case size for some reason (despite jewel cases being readily available). I keep meaning to redo some of the templates from here to make it easier. My plan is to make a template for Switch-size TG16 covers so that I can do it easy. I've seen where someone has a jewel case template for TG16 games, so I will probably download that so I can match up some of the colors so I can put those on different layers for easy cover making.

Guess you beat me to it :p But here is what I came up with and printed off tonight. It's slightly too wide, the spine was slightly too wide as well, and it's just a bit too tall, so I have modified it accordingly. Still, I think it turned out nice.

looks pretty good man.  Artwork didn't take as much as a hit as I figured it would.  I'd still stick with CD cases but this ain't a bad alternative.

Okay, I have finally put together a template for anyone interested, based around the existing template with the art in a little box on the front. There are a couple spots where I didn't bother getting rid of the black around some of the logos and what not, but only because you wouldn't be putting anything else down there anyway. Includes options for hiding the different logos, changing the colors based on the genre, etc. It does not include the art for any of the games or any sort of template for what to do with the back, really. I had to set the game name fonts (I used Gotham Nights, available here: https://www.dafont.com/gotham-nights.font) to different sizes for the first letters vs subsequent letters to get it to look right, but it should be good now. Also included alignment guides to make sure the game names stay in the right spots.

I was of the impression that your meme meant that you were going to make a good cover for it, despite it being a waste of time.

I thought I was.  I think confusion happens when memes are meant to convey an idea/feeling. Leaves a bit up to interpretation.
