There should be a rule that you can’t start a pickups thread without pictures of pickups :P

So, a friend who I met as a customer years ago sent me the best Xmas gift that I received lol!

Mind you, that’s the automotive white. Not the ceramic or pearl white. As in limited to 500 units per region.

Actually got this for "Christmas". (Just something my wife and I bought and saved to open until Dec 25th, not an actual present). It's pretty fun, but the holder the phone sits in that goes in the headset gave us all kinds of problems with the 3 phones we have. This works with iPhone and most Androids. We have 3 Androids in our place. An old Sony Xperia X3 that isn't being used, her Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and my Galaxy S7 Active. None of them would fit in the holder. The Sony didn't have the USB port in the right spot (needs to be on the bottom), her phone was too long, and mine was too thick. Finally I got mine to fit without the holder, with a piece of cardboard to fill the gap. The other pain was that you need to download a free 600mb app to use the thing, which was "fun" to do 3 times with no Wi-Fi (I put sim card in Sony phone temporarily to download app on that phone).

All in all it's pretty fun. I'll post an unboxing/ review video to YouTube soon.

^^^ this is why I really don’t care for products which require use of a phone. I got my son this viewfinder thing for Xmas, and it requires a phone and an app. Otherwise it’s just a hunk of plastic. It’s terribly inconvenient.

Thinking of just buying a cheap $20 smartphone and leaving it in the headset forever.

I picked up one of those smart phone VR headsets at Target about 2 months ago.  It was on clearance for $10 so I figured why not.  It's not fantastic, and I don't really recommend it, but it was a cheap way to test out whether or not I could use VR without getting immediate motion sickness.

That is pretty.  I would love to have a white PS2, PS3 and PS4 (even PSTV), but that's not likely to happen any time soon.

Technically a repost from the December 2017 pickups, but who could not resist sharing this anyway?

and a quote from RecOne himself about his thoughts on this:
My biggest problems with the joy cons are the lack of a proper d-pad (got a lot of the ACA Neo Geo games) and the poor performance of the left joy con (looses the connection all the time).

The 8bitdo controllers just feel "right" - i also prefer them over the "pro controller" from Nintendo.
The only thing that they are missing is the HD rumble feature (they just have "normal" rumble feature) - but i don't care about that.

I myself mostly use this as a wired X-Input gamepad, as a) I don't have a Nintendo Switch yet and b) wireless X-Input functionality broke on the first day of the New Year. It's a trade off, however, as select Windows programs do support rumble (maybe motion controls as well? We'll see.), say the Dolphin emulator for Wii/GCN games. I also experimented with RetroPie (on a Raspberry Pi 1) and Android functionality (I really need to upgrade.).

Minecraft is seriously addicting. I played an early build and spent a ridiculous amount of time building and exploring. I picked it up again a couple years ago and couldn't believe all the additions that had been added like farming and redstone (electricity). I got addicted all over again and spent a year building my own metropolis filled with secret passageways and hidden switches. I played so much I was dreaming about Minecraft at night. I'm sure I'll play again in the future, but it's definitely the type of game that can take over all your free time if you let it.

It sounds like the thing I could have put hours into when I was much younger, but it just ins't appealing to me now.  Pretty much the same idea as sim games for me.  Loved them as a kid when I would afford hundreds of hours per game, but not today.

Wait.  The Retron systems play them patched? as in translation patch?  Is this auto or do you need to install anything?

Also the Retro Freak will auto patch them if you install them to the SD card or play straight from the cart

holy crap that thing is expensive though. Anyone know if the Retron 5 is the only one of their devices that does the IPS patching? I'd prefer to get one of the smaller units that only does 1-2 systems...Only going to use it for SFC and MAYBE Famicom games

To my knowledge, the Retron 5 is the only product they sell that offers this feature. You need some kind of SD or USB slot in order to apply the patch, and as someone who owns many Retron systems, the 5 is the only one that has these. At least in my collection

You can also patch more than just language translations. You can patch entirely new games. Provided you have the right carts. For instance, you can turn Earthbound into the uncensored version of or the Halloween hack version, or pop in link to the past and with a patch you can be playing ancient stone tablets or BS The Legend of Zelda. It's kind of fun to play around and see the variety you can get

Yes, so long as you have at least one physical cartridge for the system you want to play and have it inserted in the 5.

I don't think there's any specific rules regarding what and when to post to the monthly "haul" topic. I can't imagine there's any issues making a new post to share your most recent haul. Senior members please correct me if I'm wrong.

The local Bargain Hunters was a treasure trove of video games spanning multiple generations. My brother (Voyager15) and I split funds to purchase IL2 Forgotten Battles and the Ace Expansion Pack and for myself, a Hot Wheels Hydroplane Computer Cars set. I didn't really get it for the car itself, but the software associated with it, which is loaded on a 3.25 inch floppy disk.

On both IL2 boxed sets, however, I attempted to remove the stickers used to scan barcodes, which evidently damaged the box. The front covers themselves were unaffected.

We may still be able to work some scans off these, however, and publish them to the site or forums somehow.

lol I never even noticed that. Since this is mostly something for display, I'm not terribly worried. It didn't come with power either. But it was basically only $10, so I'm definitely not complaining

Agreed.  But I actually didn't own any of these outside of the digital version of MK8 that was pre-installed on my Wii U.  So at an average of $26 each, it was a pretty big win for me.  I had a chance to get a few of these for $40 a while back so I'm glad I pass on them.

But I think the big take away from this is I think Target is getting ready to drop Wii U all together, so now is the time to keep an eye out for more clearance sales.  And we all know that Target will even mark down first party Nintendo titles.  I had been watching for the Wii U pro controller to drop because I wanted a second one for cheap, but unfortunately, both of my stores of completely sold out despite never droping the price that I know of.

Same, it was my first Magfest and it was so fun. SiIvagunner was invited as a guest and I'm one of the Rippers for the channel, so I got to meet and hang out with a bunch of the members from it. The panel went perfectly and our signing session had 95 people in line. I got to meet and see‎ Jun Senoue‎ + the bass player and drummer in concert. We showed him one of the SiIva High Quality Rips. It's a shame I missed seeing ChrisChan, and apparently Chad Warden was there and we also missed him but I did so many cool things and met so many cool people. I'm planning on going back next year.

Honestly the celebrity were cool at Magfest, (Also being part of SiIvagunner I guess I was kind of a 'celebrity', as they were an invited guest) the best part was just hanging out with friends I saw irl for the first time, and meeting new people. After almost all the Siiva people left to head back home on the last day I had dinner with some people I just met and was hanging out with.

I could have gotten some more signatures, a friend got his Sonic Adventure LP signed by John St Jon and he wrote 'Dam! I'm Big' on it, but I preferred to walk around than wait in line again after the Sonic Composers. I also missed an opportunity to meet Extra Credits, ChrisChan and Chad Warden.

With most famous people you get maybe a hello and a picture, but the memories I cherish more are from hanging out with people.

I funded the Kickstarter on this close to the same time as the PlayStation Anthology.  Although I'm more of a PS1 guy, I've enjoyed the SNES book a little more.  Not real surprising though.  The SNES book is more art based while the PS1 book is more history based.

I really enjoyed this game.  It didn't seem to get much attention after its release (good or bad), but I thought it was a great entry in the series and worth the wait.

I really love the emotion(s) that this game provokes.

But I did spew many four letter words throughout the game as I fought with the controls.

Still, I will most definitely give it a playthrough again sometime in the future.

Funny you say that.  For me, it was probably the only Team Ico game that I didn't struggle at least a little bit on the controls.

I should clarify that controlling the main character wasn’t a battle, but getting the creature to do what I want was a constant struggle :/

I got Keith Courage and Bonk's Revenge, and 2 controllers with it. Unfortunately it looks like Bonk's Revenge may be toast. Now I'm trying to decide if I'm going to pickup the NeoSD for it, or get the dbGrafx booster and an everdrive. I'm leaning towards NeoSD so I can play CD games on it as well, but it's just so damned expensive.

I never really thought much about the TG16 growing up. But since I moved in June it went from being "something that I eventually need to get for my collection..." to "why the fuck don't I have a tg16 yet??" pretty damn fast.

That NeoSD looks fucking amazing, but I read on shmups.com that there's some issues with the way they did the video sync on the RGB lines. Wondering how long that's going to take them to fix

I'm also leaning towards a NeoSD.  It's a lot of money, but certainly worth it in my opinion.  I'm  considering selling my Duo R to fund the Neo SD and just use that with my old Core Grafx II that I still have.
Title: Re: January 2018 hauls - New stuff of New Year
Post by: Hesch on January 22, 2018, 09:56:18 AM
I wanted a Turbo Duo so bad, but man they're expensive. And the mods you need to do to really get them setup and working right is even worse. I found a good deal on this TG16, so I jumped on it. The Super SD System 3 makes me regret not getting a Turbo Duo a LOT less.

Here's the thread on Shmups. The talk about the issues starts about halfway through. For anyone who doesn't lurk there much, there's a LOT of assholes on that forum, and in that threads specifically. But the developers are in the thread, and they're talking to experts about what the issues are and how to fix them. As far as I know, it only affects RGB output on the unit though.

https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=61381

Whoops, just realized it's actually called the Super SD System 3 lol

Paid $110 for Radiant Silvergun.  Seller listed it for $120 initially.  I figured it would sell quick, but it was still there the next day lowered to $110 so I jumped on it.  Disc, manual & rear insert are all mint - no spine card though.

I'd love to get Street Fighter Zero 3, but that's just way too expensive.  I do have a burned CD-R so I at least I can play it.

Been a while since I posted a pickup.  This has been my haul throughout the month.  All in all a little over $200 for everything, which isn't bad actually.
Happy to have Threads and Alundra 2, as I'm now only 11 games off from owning every PS1 RPG released in North America.

Axiom Verge was a nice find, but my real gem here is Countdown: Vampires.  With this, I have now acquired every PS1 horror title released in North America.  Working on PAL next.

What'd you find wrong with the Crash Bandicoot remake?  Granted, I haven't played it much, but what I have I've enjoyed.  Does seem to be a little harder than I remember, but then again, so were the PSOne games when I went back and played them recently.

Broken controls.  End of story.  Originals are not difficult.  I 100% them on an annual basis.  The remake is basically unplayable.  I'm happy for people who can find enjoyment out of it, but I will never forget it as my biggest disappointment of 2017.

I saw a video that shows where in the originals, when you land, you stick it, end of story. In the new ones, when you land, it's possible to slide a little, which can make you fall off ledges.

If you are getting a console and all 3 games for $50, that's actually a pretty good deal, because the original 3 Crash games can sometimes be pricey.  I would have suggested starting with one game and getting the others if you like them, but that's a pretty good price.

I would star with 1 and move onto the others if you like it.  Crash 2 was a major improvement over the original, but it didn't make the original obsolete like many PS1 sequels did.  I still consider the original to be playable.  I actually never finished 3, but I still want to some day.

It's funny.  I can't think of any game series on the PS1 where I was able to enjoy 3 games.  Tons of games with a great part 1 and 2, but I could never get into part 3.

Some examples:
  Crash Bandicoot
  Tomb Raider
  Resident Evil
  Twisted Metal
  Ace Combat

I'd love to get Street Fighter Zero 3, but that's just way too expensive.  I do have a burned CD-R so I at least I can play it.
I had no idea that Zero 3 was worth that much! I have a loose copy that I got in a bundle with a Japanese Saturn and some other games for like $60.

SF Zero 3 was a very late release in Japan.  I believe it came out months AFTER the Dreamcast version, but the Saturn port is widely considered to be superior.

Continuing on my quest to collect the remaining Shmups I need for my Genesis collection. Happy to knock this one off the list. Fantastic game!

If any of you have Cartwheel from Target, Rime is 50% off for Switch.

Edit: I tried to add a photo but Apple decided to use a stupid format that neither my laptop or mediafire likes very much. Anybody know the best way to upload photo from iPhone to view here?

Let's try this: (https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/7411/3jt1v6aefsr6t3t4g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/view/3jt1v6aefsr6t3t/IMG_0287.JPG)

Rime is a great game that I highly recommend, but I have heard TERRIBLE things about the Switch version.  I would read about it before getting the game, even at a discount price.

Nice pick up on Elemental Master.  That game has really went up in price.

It has! I actually grabbed a bunch of Genesis manuals for $4 each a couple years back, and snagged a few for some pretty rare games. This being one of them, so I was able to save myself a decent amount by grabbing a copy with no manual.

Yeah I know, the frame rate is terrible in some spots. I played for a few hours today and it was very choppy in wide open areas with long draw distance. I knew that was the case going in but it was much worse than I thought it was going to be.

Nice!  I think mine is missing the manual but I did score it with the original artwork when I got it.  I'm down to just a handful of the "must have" US Genesis shmups.  Raiden Trad and Sagaia being the two I can think of.

(this goes for any of the stores branded merch)
