Title: PC Games - Win/DOS - US - Custom or Retail, doesn't matter
Post by: JCE3000GT on November 01, 2017, 01:53:13 AM

If you haven't already done so, steamgamecovers.com is worth checking out for some of these covers. They've all got Steam banners on the front and spine, but it shouldn't be too difficult to cover them with PC/DOS tags.

I have Unreal 2 and Aliens vs. Predator 2 that I can scan, they're in dvd sized cases so would just need a clean-up, probably(?)

Lemme know if you'd like the scans...

Ok great, I'll check that out!  I suck at graphics editing so hopefully even *I* can switch over the steam banners to Windows/DOS/etc.

I can definitely take them and if I cannot make something I'm sure someone else could clean them up.  :D  Thank you!

Thanks a ton guys.  These two are looking good Dr Agon, thanks!  2 down 151 to go!   ;D

I tried to use a template I found on deviant art but I am so out of my element I don't even know how to use GIMP to do what I want it to do.  I know the basics but suck at layers and such.  I wanted to do a plain case with just the title graphic and basic text for the spine for the shelves but stumbled on that.  So, yes, I'm an incompetent noob!  LOL

If you'd like a hand post links to the steam covers you'd like converted here on the forums and let me know what version of the PC banner you'd like, the black bars with "PC CD" and PC DVD" across the top or the white "Games for Windows" top. Or if you want both, just let me which games need which banner.

Also I found a great website with high-res scans of many PC games here: https://bigboxcollection.com/#CollectionOverview If you'd like some of those converted as well do the same thing; give me a link to the cover and a preference for banner, or no banner at all if you'd like.

That's awesome, thanks!  I definitely need to check out that big box site.  I'll look over all of this and figure out what I want to do.   8)  I do like the template I have below BTW.

In the mean time I created my first custom cover, the top of the back page is intentionally left blank.  Here is a small preview thumbnail.  Feedback is appreciated.

I used excel for the system requirements box, a barcode generator website, MSPaint for various things, and GIMP to resize and position everything.  A poor man's attempt, but I am satisfied.

Here's another one I did tonight.  Thoughts?

Here's a few I'd like to have converted.  Below is also a link to a template I'm using, let me know if this works for you.  :)  Thank you for anything you can convert.   8)

I've gone over your list again and I definitely have;
half life 2
Elder scrolls : morrowind

and I think I have

star trek voyager elite force

However I don't have any free time until Monday, so be patient and I'll get back to you...

Also, if you don't hear anything from me Monday, feel free to shout at me, I have a tendency to forget things...

I didn't even notice that Big Box website was European. That a little disappointing, but it's still a good source of PC raws for our European users. If anyone wants to download one of the covers on the site, click on a cover then click on the "download papercraft" button in the upper right corner of the screen.

I started on a few of your requests this evening. The template you provided will work just fine. I'm removing references to Steam on the back covers and adding the PC banner to the front and spine. Would you also like accurate barcodes and ESRB ratings on the covers? And do you want the company logo or the windows logo on the spine? And one last question regarding Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (what a mouthful!) was that released on DVD or CD?

Appreciated!  To answer your Q's...

ESRB rating is ok to add, don't really care either way.
Barcodes yes, add that please.  I have a cuecat so just in case I need to scan them in the future.
For consistency I suppose just the Windows/DOS logo depending on the release on the spine is better.
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II was released in 1997 so I'm going to assume it is a CD-ROM.

I converted the Steam games you posted. You had two versions of GTA Vice City, so I used the one that had better color and contrast. If you need me to do the other one as well or if there are any changes you need, let  me know. The artwork for Jedi Academy was pretty low quality, it looks like the original creator just used mobygames scans. I'll work on the big box games later.

I've been buying these.  The quality is pretty good as is the price.  AVOID Progo discs...  The double disc even has a manual holder tabs like the single disc.  I really like the six disc cases too which allows me to have e flexibility with duplicates or games like Wing Commander IV and Unreal Tournament 2004 that have six discs.

Single disc:

Double disc:

Six disc:

I've been working on your Big Box conversions. They're a bit more work since I'm starting off with raw scans so progress is a little slower. Also, I was poking around online looking for a scan of Arctic Thunder for another user when I stumbled across covercentury.com. It's probably worth checking out their PC section here: https://www.covercentury.com/index.php?p=pc&l=a. Maybe you'll be able to track down a couple more missing covers there.

I also noticed covercentury.com has stolen a ton of The Cover Project's work and rehosted it on their site. I was annoyed to see some of the covers I've made posted there with no attribution. People are obnoxious.

Thanks Tyler.  I'm looking through that site now.  Most of it seems to be German release covers.  I may be able to work with some of them that are of older games without ratings.   :)

First of the 3 Big Box covers is finished. It's not perfect, but should do the job. There was a lot of scuffing that was difficult to eliminate. I'll start on the next one!

EDIT: Modified to add barcode.

I'm not a graphic artist nor am I any good at this stuff, but I seem to be able to churn out a few temporary or short-term custom covers using this template on some harder to find games.

Here's another two:
