Time for the big reveal of what I am been working on for the past few weekends. This is my Sega Retail Display case! I’ve had this sitting around in various states since 2014 but finally got around to putting it together the best I could. I believe this would have been in something like KB Toys back in the day. It would have originally been mounted to the wall at the bottom and top and the whole spindle would have spun around. I’ve not been able to find any pictures of it anywhere on the internet and nobody has been able to give me any real info on it. Unfortunately I think it was missing a few parts so we had to improvise and make it a free standing case without the ability for it to fully spin. I did have enough parts for almost 2 of them but it was really just enough parts for 1 good one and some extra junk at the end.
Here's a quick video tour I made for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvLiRlkBlLs

Here is what it looked like when I originally got it.

I fully disassembled it and cleaned everything.

Some of the artwork was damaged so I scanned it, cleaned it up, and "fixed" it the best I could

Let me give you some more details on this specific display as iremember them vividly when iIwas a kid my parents would take me to k-mart and Sega had 1 whole side of the isle these sat up on a shelf mounted to the bottom and top and spun there were 5! In a row and there was a cut out plastic picture of sonic the same height of these off to the side of the shelves the shelves below these had like Sega consoles and controllers behind glass I've looked for these for years and this is very nostalgic thanks for the post iIalso believe there was one that was 32x and there were similar Nintendo ones

Thanks everyone! I'm really glad to finally have this together and out of storage.

Awesome! I never thought about K-Mart being the source of these! Thanks for the info!

This is amazing! I would love to have one of these. Nice Work on the Restoration too!

lol yeah that doesn't mean they weren't elsewhere also when I said 32x I meant sega cd I think there were cases for games from it aswell I wouldn't doubt there being a gamegear variant either let me know if you ever want to sell this though I doubt u would as its such a nice piece

Looks fantastic! Nice work
-
Thanks again guys!
I've had a couple of other people remember seeing these at K-Marts back in the 90s so I think that finally puts the source to rest!

yes, i was trying to find pictures of this with no luck and read in other page those people telling you that they remember that stand :P.
Nice stand by the way. sad that you don't have all the pieces for the other one. isn't there a possibility of you making those parts that are mising to assemble the other one? You have one assemble with all the parts that the other have missing, so you could make those parts.

The left over parts are largely broken or just in bad shape (cracked, broke, bent, etc.). I'm probably going to hang onto all the extra stuff but it will go back into storage for now.

Very nice! I would love to find something like this, if I had the room... :)
-
Congratulations, it looks amazing! Totally jealous! Do you have it filled with games, yet? Would it be too much to ask for some shots of your games on display?

I remember seeing one of those Sega retail display cases when I was a kid. They had them at KB Toys and K-Mart back in the day. That took me right back to my childhood. I want to wish you good luck in restoring it. Who knows how much those are worth?
-
Very cool! A local fleamarket vendor has the more traditional SEGA display case (big box with shelves similar to the World of Nintendo cases). For some reason he doesn't load it up and he hasn't put a price on it. I asked "How much?" and he definitely knows that it's worth hundreds, and I'm not ready to pay hundreds. :( I would spend $400 on a WoN cabinet, however.

No idea what it's actually worth as I've never seen another one for sale or anything. I paid $100 for all of the parts.

This is so cool. I vividly remember spending loads of time in front of a few of these display cases spinning the games around and dreaming about actually buying them while my Parents shopped. Very awesome work putting it back together like that. :D

Here's a picture on it in place in my room. Ended up just sticking some of my Sega hardware boxes on top.

Also, there were 2 rails left with artwork on them so I hung them up.
