Not surprised by the announcement. However, I am surprised by Star Fox 2.
Great line up.
Like the NES Classic, I will buy one as long as I can get it at MSRP without waiting in line.
-
It's nice that Star Fox 2 is getting an official release.
-
The SNES Classic Edition has only 21 games.
EDIT: Never mind.
-
That's what this is...?
This is the SNES classic. I listed what games it comes with...
-
Looking forward to play SF2 ;D
I'm wondering how different it is from the ROM that is going around since two decades.
-
Hopefully I'll be able to get to one before the scalpers swarm the stores... (also maybe everyone's attention will shift away from the NES Classic and I'll be able to get one for near retail price!)
-
Solid line up of games there, but the list of A class snes titles means that there will always be something missing. No Star Wars trilogy, uni rally, rock n roll racing, axelay, gradius 3, un squadron, blah blah blah. The eu release looks gorgeous, and I will definitely be looking to get my hands on one. I fear though that after the success of the nes mini, this ones going to be even harder to get.
-
This is a great lineup of games! I was gonna post about this earlier but I was busy.
I will definitely try to get my hands on one or two of these.
The SNES Classic Edition has only 21 games. yes, it has Star Fox 2. but, here is a list of games that we don't get in the SNES Classic Edition.
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire II
Castlevania Dracula X
Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Final Fantasy II/IV
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Mega Man 7
Mega Man X2
Mega Man X3
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
And your point is?... I hate to be an ass, but you're complaining that the system won't have enough great games on it already? That's pretty sad.
-

You can emulate the SNES on just about anything these days. If you're looking for a bigger game selection just set yourself up with a Rasberry Pi with Retropie. I see this as more of a collectible for gamers rather than a serious gaming system.
Here's hoping I'm able to track one down this time!

I was thinking those controller ports were fake, and this picture of the Japanese version confirms it:
Looks like it uses Wii ports again, which is cool. and to be expected. Finally an offical way to get the Club Nintendo controller in the US!
For those that don't know, the PAL version looks the same as the Japanese, only with the SNES logo replacing the Super Famicom logo, on the system and controllers. The Japanese mini comes out a little later, on Oct 5th.
Here's the link to the Japanese announcent on Nintendo of Japan's website: bit.ly/2tdkQCr (http://bit.ly/2tdkQCr)
They even have box art for Star Fox 2:
The PAL territory lineup is the same as the US, but Japan's is a bit different:
1. Contra III: The Alien Wars
2. Donkey Kong Country
3. Final Fantasy VI (AKA III)
4. Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
5. F-Zero
6. Kirby Super Star
7. The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
9. Mega Man X
10. Panel De Pon (Tetris Attack)
11. Secret of Mana
12. Star Fox
13. Star Fox 2
14. Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
15. Super Mario Kart
16. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
17. Super Mario World
18. Super Metroid
19. Super Soccer
20. Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
21. Yoshi’s Island
That means it has 5 exclusives, only one of which not released for the SNES in the US or Europe:
1. Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
2. The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
3. Panel De Pon
4. Super Soccer
5. Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
Replacing EarthBound, Kirby's Dream Course, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Castlevania IV and Super Punch-Out!!

Who fucking cares what OTHER games are on it?!
The final version of Star Fox 2 has never seen the light of day. Anywhere. We've all been playing an incomplete version for years now. I just want that damned rom. I don't even care about the stupid little console, but I'll buy it to playSF2, for sure.
On a side note, that box art is ugly as fuck.

Very true. I wonder if they stole the fan translation?
Also on the box art, you know that they have to copy the original boxes, though the US never had that NES-esqe 90s red banner across the top. Anyway, yet another reason why Japan wins:

I kinda like that box art... :'(
Also, I'm hoping that this version of Star Fox 2 is released on the Switch's virtual console. And hopefully this thing's release doesn't de-prioritize Virtual console. I still want to download classics on my modern console! I don't want to be confined to 21 games on a mini console that's harder to find than bigfoot doing the limbo in Antarctica.
-

No. It's okay. I'll get it when it comes out.

Don't worry. They'll find the way to dump the ROM itself.
-
Holy fuck I'm excited over finished version of Star Fox 2!!!!!!!!
Hopefully the release the actual finished Star Fox 2 and not just fixed rom hack of it.
They have done this with (I think it was) Super Mario bros 3 where they just took rom that some one had patched and released it on Virtual Console as non-patched would have not worked (it was confirmed that it really was taken off from internet not patched by Nintendo).
And as that just happened maybe they'll someday release the currently lost BS F-Zero 2 stages Forest I, Forest II, Forest III, Metal Fort I and Metal Fort II.

And ordered.

Where from? Everywhere I looked was sold out already on preorder.

-
I'm not interested at all,
Watching nintendo and the history with Nes mini, it is clear that they will release a limited amount and many people will be left without console. They will have no choice but to buy it at abusive prices in the speculation market or go without it.
All this is the fault of Nintendo, is the one who believes that then these things happen.
While I agree with you to some extent, I think it's become clear that Nintendo considers these as collector's items and as such makes them in limited runs. It's comparable to these new boutique companies that have popped up like LRG which make small batch releases of PS4 and Vita games. If nothing else, it gets people talking about their brand and keeps them in the news cycle.
-
I'd rather just play my sd2snes that has way more games than this hyped up crap.
-
Hack it, and it virtually becomes an SD2SNES. I'm in for like 3, no joke.
Hacking the NES Mini took like... 5 minutes...

What is the difference in performance between the "official" emulator and Retroarch? Will Retroarch support more roms or something?
-
Retroarch will allow you to play other emulators on the NES Mini (SNES / Genesis / etc). You can (without changing the emulator) easily put all the NES games onto the Mini. Retroarch just allows you to save some space so you can put moar games on it. Lightgun games obviously wont work, and Hakchi2 lets you know before a game is transferred if there is an error. But I have about 500 hacked NES roms and most to all loaded just fine. Enjoying my NES Mini with over 1300 NES games.
Sure, $80 for 30 or so games sounds terrible, but so did $60 for the 30 NES mini games. After hacking the NES Mini, my god, best $100 and $75 (2nd mini - for storage / backup - couldn't say no to $75 brand new in box with controller extension) ever spent (due to me not wanting to buy the system when it came out and waited until the freaking day that it was cancelled to buy it before people realized and jacked up the prices to todays prices)
-
Hm, interesting. I own an NES Classic myself and did successfully load my own up with hundreds of extra games using Hakchi2, but some of the hacked/patched games either did not transfer over at all or transferred over in a screwed-up fashion. For example, the FF7 NES game (english patch applied) did not transfer over, but The Legend of Link did, although it has some severe tiling errors when displaying the intro (which, if I understand correctly, means that I am going to also see some severe tiling errors in the later dungeons, which sucks). Most discussion I've seen on the NES Classic seems to only cover how to load it up with extra games in general; niche examples like mine don't come up often so I'm unsure how/if it can be corrected at all.
I had considered adding additional emulators, but thematically (to me) it felt "wrong". To each their own. But this is also why I really want to secure myself an SNES Classic (and depending on reviews of the Genesis Mini's audio/video quality, one of those eventually): so I can load it up with its own respective library and hope that all of the games with special chips emulate properly.

^ ^ exactly how I feel.
-
I read a review of the Genesis that says it's pretty terrible. At least very least, the wireless controller that comes with it is attrocious.

It does make a great "shell" for a raspberry pi though ;). Especially seeing that the Mini Genesis is RCA out...
-
Oh yeah, those things are garbage. Nintendo doesn't produce crap like that. Even their "budget" products like the New 2DS XL are extremely well built.

I saw on Facebook that you picked up a 2DS XL. Any chance of getting a picture of one opened up next to a New 3DS (non XL)? I'm curious how much bigger it looks in comparison. I'm also curious about picture quality compared to a New 3DS (non XL). I saw the 2DS XL at Target today and I'm just trying to decide if it's worth it to me.

I can, but just so you know, the N3DS came with both types of LCD, so the comparison may not be all that useful (I'm not sure which LCD type my N3DS units are at this point, as I've only powered one of them up just to make sure it worked, since it was used).

I'm not sure if I'm following you. Are you saying that some N3DS units have different types of LCD depending on the model? If so, I'm using the Super Mario 3D Land N3DS (the one that game with 3D Land pre-installed and two sets of removable face plates).
-
Yes, but there's no way to know just by the design. Even the serial numbers aren't able to 100% determine. You've basically gotta do side-by-side comparisons to know for sure (or just on its own if you're really familiar with how both types appear).
If you want to google it, the two types are IPS and TN. IPS is generally the preferable type.

No, because you said "other than the site". This is clearly the site.
-
Glad my 3 are confirmed to ship as soon as they are out.
-
Hey now! You did say (and it's not edited) "other than the website" ::) I wasn't implying anything, I just searched google and wahoo! 2 day shipping!
Today "underneath the website", the first thing that popped up for me (from searching Walmart SNES)
:P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P
And it was the first thing that popped up other than the website when searching for "walmart" on that day. Stop being a douche.
-
It was a joke... and not meant to make fun of you... people are idiots if they can't use google... Stop being an ass.
And it was the first thing that popped up other than the website when searching for "walmart" on that day.
Convenient cropping is convenient. Search engines are based on locational information.
2 day shipping, woot. Walmart is now Amazon, without the great prices.
They most likely won't re-fulfill cancelled orders... if they go back online. People are going to be pissed.
*edit*
I pop in and make stupid jokes, learn to deal with it. Too freaking serious here, which has made me completely stop contributing to the NES cover cause. Because you know, out of the last $700 I have spent for the cause, only Taketheword has helped. Everyone else is just take take take take, and I for one (with all that Shenske is going through) want to help him out. That "cover joke" was so last year man.
---
Back to the SNES Mini, someday soon...
-
Sorry, but my google fu must be lacking. I'm trying to figure out the problem, besides the general, walmart sucks, child labor, cutting jobs, no registers open. I used to work for them, yet I still have no idea what happened recently, besides the cancelling SNES Classic pre-orders. So for the idiots like me who don't know what we are looking for in our Google searches, can you please elaborate?
-
The top story if you googled walmart was that Walmart had a glitch in their database which made the pre-orders allowed pre-maturely. Walmart was not suppose to take pre-orders 7/21 so they cancelled EVERY order.
If you googled walmart last week, the top story that was plastered everywhere was the "Check your Walmart SNES Mini Pre-order! They are being cancelled!"
Convenient Cropping is Convenient, I cropped the google search. RIGHT underneath it was the news stories. I was more surprised at that time by the 2 day shipping lol.
-
From Nintendo's Facebook page
We appreciate the incredible anticipation that exists for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, and can confirm that it will be made available for pre-order by various retailers late this month.
A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year.
I guess we will see.

For a good laugh, read some of the Facebook comments. One person is actually mad that they are making more this time around because "it's just more units for the scalpers." Really? You are mad because they are making MORE? No matter what you do, some people will always be unhappy.

*facepalm

Yeah, but aren't those both the same thing? I was looking for something not SNES related to be Wiggy's "1st straw" to his SNES "last straw".
-
Just realized this topic is called SNES Mini but that's not actually what it's called. Even though I knew what it was about it's the Classic. Wasn't the revision of the SNES that came out late in it's life called the Mini?

There were many straws before this. In nutshell, Walmart is an awful company and I've NEVER had good dealings with it.

Whoops. Fixt
-
Not really. In Japan, the last model released was called Super Famicom Jr., and the last model Famicom was the AV Famicom. In the US (and Europe?), they didn't give them special names. Just NES and SNES, as usual. Fans came up with their own nicknames, like top-loader and mini SNES, but they were never official names.
Now for these "Classic" systems, the offical names are, in Japan:
Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer
Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom
in Europe:
Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System
Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System
and in the US:
Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition
Super Nintendo Entertainment System: SNES Classic Edition
So in Japan and Europe, they have the word "Mini" in the title, but not in the US.
Also interesting that for NES, the US and Europe systems and games look the same, but Japan is different. But for SNES, Japan and Europe look the same (but have different names), while the US has the "exclusive" look for systems, controllers and cartridges.

Attention fellow Yanks:
As you may or may not have heard, Best Buy and Amazon launched their pre-orders last night. Best Buy's pre-orders sold out within 20 minutes and Amazon's were gone within an hour of going up (apparently the pre-order page was different than the placeholder page that people have been camping for the last month).
This means it is highly likely that GameStop, Target and other such retailers will likely have pre-orders going up sometime soon as well, but God only knows when. So keep an eye out and good luck.
-
If someone manages to get extra copy of US version, I'd like to buy one.
-
Walmart, Target and GameStop online preorders went up about 45 minutes ago. Almost all were sold out within seconds. Not even a joke. No point in preordering anything Nintendo anymore if the only people that can get them are resellers running bots.
-
Got in immediately (first fifteen seconds or so) and I had one in my cart on Target's website, but couldn't get checked out fast enough to place the order. Those bots make it rough to order...
-
I managed to snag one from GameStop in person (not online) just a few minutes ago. They were pretty strict about the one per household rule, which I had no problem with. If I can get my hands on a second one for trade purposes, I will, but at this point I'm not putting much effort into finding another one.
-
And all this "low stock" and "sold out in mere minutes" is already giving me suspicions.
Not that history's gonna repeat itself, it never repeats itself.

Crazy! even the French don't have that law.
-
Maybe someone should sue them over rasism over forcing French supresism.
We have similar thing with Swedish but the laws are not that dick.

It's a very complex and political thing, I don't want to go in details on it.
Bottom line, if Zelda and whatever other game was also available in french was in the bundle, I wouldn't be here to complain about it.
-
An employee managed to grab one for he and myself from BB last night :D
-
Best Buy was by far the easiest order. I place one call my friends and log in again and order another one. Amazon was different the page I originally had follow did not work , I had to follow a link from twitter that work. I was just lucky that I was at work on my phone when the tracker app notify me.

With all the BS surrounding the ban of SNES classic in Québec, Nintendo finally decided to release it after all.
I'm still a bit pissed, it made me missed the pre-orders and we will never have the official reason... but in the end I'm happy that they fixed this.
https://twitter.com/toysruscanada/status/909761986589839360

Does Quebec still require those 2 games to be in French -> if yes -> Will all US and Canadian releases have language option or will this French Canadian version be super rare collector's version?

Unless I missed something, there were zero detail or reason officially provided by Nintendo at the time they blocked that market. They didn't even officially mentionned it wasn't, retailers did.
Exactly the same thing hapenned yesterday. Retailers announced it one by one, dead silence from Nintendo.
My guess is that it will be the exact same version as anybody else. The box itself is already trilingual.
I'll let you know once I get my hand on one on the launch date :)
-
From your previous post I got the idea that it was unlawfull to sell it due to the 2 games being in french but not in french on SNES mini.
So was it Nintendo or the Quebec language police (or what it's called) saying that it can't be sold?
-
I'm sure it was Quebec. Nintendo surely wouldn't have any reason to NOT sell it there.

So either Quebec backed down, Nintendo added French language option, or Nintendo or sellers just said fuck the police.
Well we'll see is it English only, dual language in Quebec only (which woukld make that version highly collectablle) or dual language in whole North America or dual (or multi) language in whole world.

Initially, everybody was pointing the finger at the local "language cop" if we can call it so, but they got fed up and responded that they had nothing to do with this, they won't react or investigate unless there are complaints (and there were none). The plainly mentionned that it's a manufacturer decision to sell or not in a market (kinda pointing the finger at Nintendo).
I don't think we'll even know publicly anything from Nintendo, so we can only speculate.

Oooh OK, now I understand.
Thanks.

That's kind of funny that that got enough shit to actually respond to the issue. Do you have any link?

I know the OQLF (language police) twitter responded to the issue a few times saying it had nothing to do with the restrictions. Check the tweets from August 23 here: https://twitter.com/oqlf?lang=en

So I think I see how this French issue was "fixed". Here are all the online (pdf) manuals: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clvs/manuals/
The following is only true for the 20 "classic" games, not counting Star Fox 2, which had a brand new online manual created in every language. So you can select a language here, and if you choose Japanese, you get the Super Famicom manuals, with five alternate games from the otherwise worldwide versions. However, if you choose ANY other language, you get Star Fox 2 and the system manuals in that language. However, with the other 20 games, no matter what language you choose (besides Japanese), you get the a pdf of the English USA manual. Unlike the NES/ Famicom classic, there isn't a "Wii Virtual Console-like" electronic manual, only a pdf version if the original printed USA manual. That is, unless you choose French. Then you can either get that same USA manual OR an electronic manual in French.
Here are the NES/ Famicom manuals for comparison:
https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/ (choose language in top right corner). Pretty much the same on these NES manuals EXCEPT you have the option of an electronic manual in any language except Japanese.

Mucho congrats. I'll be picking mine up after work (no worry about lines; I got a pre-order in during the Best Buy window). Enjoy that kickass new toy. :D

Wow, so Nintendo was really true to their word this time! I'm at Walmart in Orlando, and they just got a shipment of SNES Classic in. I was like, "Wow you guys actually have those?" as I watched them unpack at the site to store area. "Yeah, you want one?" "No thanks, I got one Friday." Never thought I'd see the day!

Still haven't gotten my american release yet, but my EU console just made it through customs and is in UPS' hands now. Part of me is considering just opening and using my EU version. I like the look of it so much more. Originally, I was thinking about getting 1 from all 3 regions to keep boxed and on the shelf. Not sure what I'm going to do now
Oh, and a detailed look at the emulation accuracy on the SNES Classic by Digital Foundry:

https://github.com/ClusterM/hakchi2/releases
Hakchi2's been updated to support the SNES Classic.
- SNES Classic Mini support.
- Automatic ROM conversion to special SNES Classic Mini's format. ~75% of games are working fine. You can use RetroArch mod for problem games.
- For expert users: you can select SNES game and press Ctrl+Alt+E to show hidden Preset ID editor.
- Individual profiles for different consoles, so you can use the same hakchi2 for both NES, SNES, Famicom and Super Famicom. You can select console type using "Settings menu".
- 7-Zip compression support for all platforms and emulators. You can compress or decompress any game using only one checkbox.
- Group operations. Now you can select multiple games in the main window, right click on them and do mass compression or mass cover downloading only for selected games. Hold control to select individual games.
- For expert users: NAND dump, NAND-B dump and memboot features. Don't use it if you don't known what is it.
- Some bugfixes and refactoring.
-
Well, I know what I'm doing after work. ;)
-
I remoted into my home PC, installed the updated Hakchi and started loading up Roms into it already. Been working on getting some translated Japanese games setup now.
When I get home, all I'll have to do is plug it in and update it
-
downloading and attempting now.
*Update*
Finished. It's really simple, and I made a youtube video outlining how to do it. Seriously though, it's super easy.

Nice and easy it seems.
And pressing reset brings you to main menu on purpose.
If you press down on the control pad after pressing the reset you can rewind the game or use save states.

Yep, super simple.
And I assumed it was on purpose, definitely a handy feature. I never had a NES classic, so I wasn't really sure what to expect.
After a very short period of time playing around with it, I'm impressed. After modding it to take ROMS (and you can even have it run Genesis/SMS roms too), I far prefer this to a Pi & Emulator. The Hakchi2 app is great, as it factors in the small details, such as number of players, release date, publisher, etc.

I tried to IPS patch some fan translations for some Japanese roms, but none of them will load on the Classic. Well, the newly released FF5 translation loads fine...DQ 1&2, 3 and 5, Star Ocean, and Ys 3 and 4 won't load at all
Wonder what's going on
-
I finally got a hold of one! GameStop's restocks were today and I was able to snag one before anyone else got there. After missing out on the NES Classic I'm beyond excited to have this thing!

Did you install the Retroarch emulation cores? The stock emulator won't play lots of games for various reasons. People are looking into workarounds, but currently one of the best workarounds is to use Retroarch for everything that doesn't run on stock.

I assume the classic is looking for unheadered ROMs? If so, it's worth checking to make sure that your patched ROMs do not contain a header.
-
I checked that last night. I know the patched FF5 rom is unheadered, and it works. I went through and looked, and some of the roms, post patch, were headered. But ALL were unheadered before patching. I realized today well after the fact that I never double checked to see which were headered after patching. Man it feels weird typing headered so many times.
Headered.

I love how the scalpers are getting burned over this.
-
Anyone looking for an American one of these? I ended up purchasing a second one, as I just couldn't let it end up in the hands of a scalper. It was 79.99, plus 7% Florida sales tax. Brand new, never opened. $85.59 USD plus actual shipping cost to wherever you are.

I could use one for my collection.
How much postage to Finland.

I would love to trade my NTSC for a PAL version =P

Official price of PAL version here in Finland double of US version in US...
But on ebay they seem to be more reasonably priced.
Like this 100 Euros+ postage

Back when the NES was first super hard to find, and they hadn't yet announced the "last day, one more time release", I got a Famicom Classic on ebay for only $70 with free shipping. Maybe a Super Famicom Classic will be our best bet for both of us to swap our US versions this time, Shoot?

I don't know how I missed your post? I mean I even posted after it! Sorry, I ended up getting rid of the system already. If I come across another one, I will keep you in mind for sure buddy!
