Going to edit this post around so I can talk about the new space now.
I moved in to my new place over the weekend, and work has kind of started on the new man cave.
Next weekend, going to work with my dad to build a new entertainment center, as most of the store bought ones won't actually hold all the systems and equipment I have. Probably doing 3x8' shelves with an enclosed backspace to hide/manage wires.
It's going to house everything from my NES to my PS4, and be my theater and gaming setup, so I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do about displays...I really want a massive 4k set to go in there, and I'm trying to decide if I'm going to do something like a framemeister to upscale or if I'll set a 2nd TV off to the side for the older systems. I've got a really nice old Samsung set with component, svideo, hdmi and vga on it that I may keep down there....undecided so far.
Anyways, here's the current "progress"!

Thanks to the crazy housing market in my city, I managed to sell my house out from under myself, before I could find a new house to move into. So now I'm couch surfing with everything I own in storage. Figured I should post some pics of the game room that I took a while back since it technically doesn't exist anymore, but will serve as a good before/after of what I'm hoping to find.
In the old house, I just converted an old 11x12 spare bedroom. WAY too small to do much in, as you'll see. It's actually one of the major reasons I decided to sell the house and upgrade. Trying to find a house with good man cave potential now...
Several things not pictured...most prominently off the top of my head...my CIB Castlevania Bloodlines, Splatterhouse 3, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana. And it's an older picture, so things have grown to the point where I ran out of storage space on both shelves.
Ignore the messiness.

Nice space!
We did the same thing (sold our house before having a new one secured). Ended up living with my mother for a month. 'Twas a difficult month, to say the least.
-
Thanks Wiggy
I'm actually sitting on my parent's couch right now. Saving about 1500/mo so it's not a total loss. I have a month till closing, And I've still gotta get past the inspection. it's making me anxious to get in there.

Good luck!
the first house that we made an offer on failed a radon test :-\ It wasn't exactly what we wanted anyway, and while sorting out the solution to the problem my wife found the house that we did eventually buy. It was definitely for the best. The house we ended up buying is WAY better than the radioactive house :)

About 5 years ago, I did something similar where I ended up living in my in-laws basement for about 3 months. My wife (fiance at the time) and I bought a house that needed a lot of work. I had a dumpster delivered on closing day, and we just about gutted the house. My older house hadn't sold yet, but I had renters moving in and they signed their contract on the same day we closed on our new house (March). For 3 months I would work at my normal job during the day. After work, I would eat dinner at my in-laws house and immediately go to the new house and work on it until about 10 PM. Then go back to their house and sleep. Next morning, rinse and repeat. After about 3 months we had enough of the house done for me to start sleeping there. We got married that summer and after the honeymoon, we had enough of the house done for my wife to be willing to live there. By October, the house was "done" and I took a break. I was ready to relax and do nothing, so I started digging my old video game consoles out and hooked them up. Before this time, I might have considered myself a "collector," but I was definitely small time, plus everything I owed had been boxed up for a pretty long time. This moment started my resurgence back into video gaming and collecting.
-
I was only minor collecting until I split with my Ex after 5 years. That kickstarted renovating that first, smaller room (her cat had completely obliterated the room. It was unlivable.) I pretty quickly filled those 2 Ikea Billy shelves, and that's when I started evaluating my budget and realized I was making twice as much as I was when I originally bought the house. And now I'm literally doubling the size of my house.

I read this comment yesterday, and I still am left here wondering.. how the hell does a house fail a radon test?

Don't know if is something related to this

Radon was detected lol!
-
Radon gas tends to build up in areas that have uranium deposits. A house without a crawl space is at risk of the gas leaking inside the house. Radon can cause cancer... So if there's too much radon detected you have to install a system to help clear it out
-
My brother-in-law's house failed their radon test when they were buying it, but the seller installed a system for removing the radon. It's built into the sump pump and has an exhaust port that exits the house on the roof. It was a pretty expensive install.

Updated first post with with the current, post move-in, status

Small preview of what my dad and I were working on all weekend.
3x 8' shelves with an enclosed section behind it for wire management.
The entertainment center in my last room was like 3x 5' shelves, and they were 100% packed, and didn't even have 100% of my equipment on it. Now in my man cave, I'll be combining home theater and game room, so I'll have a receiver, speakers, and all my current gen consoles moved in there as well. And I should have room to grow. Just gotta do some touch up and finishing work on it and it's done. REALLY happy with how it turned out.
-
Shelves are finished and installed. I placed all my consoles on it in a temp placement...I really need to sit down and figure out how to place them all so it's balanced. The bottom right corner is 100% duplicate systems now. I only put them on it because it was completely empty otherwise. I guess I'll just have to keep buying more consoles until it's full. oh well.

As for the radon, at least in the sates I've bought in before, if it fails the test (radon testing is fairly new) then you can usually get the seller to pay for the evac pump, because once it fails a radon test they have to declare that to all future buyers. It's usually less than a grand, our seller got mine done for like 800 I think. All depends on the layout of the house.
As for the design, I really like the look of that.. I moved over Halloween and my collection is still in boxes... I may have to make a move to a setup like this, saves me shelf space for more games
Looks good man, keep the pictures coming, I'm gonna mine them for ideas lol

Thanks Vault :) I wish the room was a little bit bigger, so I could finally have a pool table, but I'll settle for an Arcade and Bar in the back half of the room.
Speaking of which...

I should have this thing up and running this weekend, then it's just finishing touches. Man oh man, I'm stoked. This has always been a childhood dream.
-
And another update. Got another project finished (except for some minor finishing touches) and installed. Looking at the very first pic in this thread, it sits in the back right hand corner. I can't begin to explain how excited I am to have this thing.

Nice :o

And here's where I'm at now. A lot of the work is mostly finished. It's mostly just doing finishing touches, and continuing to replace my small media shelves with the Ikea shelving.

Looks great

Looks super chill. I'd hang there for hours without question.

Thanks guys. Still working on it every week. Now I've moved the arcade around to the corner to it's left, and converted that space for my new bigass CRT setup. Decided I do in fact need lightguns after all. Buddy down the street is going to give me a 36" Sony Trinitron set. One of their last best SD tubes. Now I just have to find a TV stand for it that'll hold it's ~250 lbs

honestly I think you could do a good job building one. Just need to decide how high you want it to be. Will you be sitting or standing?
I wanted a happy medium so I plan on a stand for mine that brings the bottom of the screen to 3 ft off the floor.
Also I have the instruction on how to get into the advanced service features if you need to correct the picture. Fair warning this is really advanced. PM me if you want a copy.
-
Well, my dad and I already built my main entertainment center, so it's not at all out of the question that we do it again.
And I'm praying that the TV comes in good shape. I've read a small bit about having to adjust geometry and what not. And I've seen how nightmarish it is on something like a BVM. I'm going to download the 240P test suite here soon to run on it. I just need to get one of those color cards or w/e they're called to calibrate.
If it's not too much trouble, go ahead and shoot me the info over so I have it available for when I do get it. I do have a 24" Sony Trinitron down there now that seems to have a picture that holds up, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to give it a tuneup.

Those last gen massive tubes all came with their own specific stands, if only because they're so hazardous (250 lbs. of glass in a front-heavy box). They all have strap systems too in order to keep them from falling forward and (potentially) killing whatever's in the way :(
Hopefully yours works with light guns. I had a 36" Wega that did not. Coincidently it was also 250 lbs. Left it behind when we moved. The new owner was all pissed about it. First time home buyer. Guess he's not familiar with the sort of shit that people usually leave behind...
-
I know for sure this one is not HD. It's the KV-36FS13. From what I've read, it's one of the last great SD Trinitron series.
And unfortunately, I don't think he has the stand for it. I know he's got it sitting in a cabinet right now... Unless I'm lucky and he's got it stashed in his garage. He always bought the nicer equipment back then, so there's a chance.
-
Mine wasn't either. But it obviously had a digital signal processor, which is what kills light gun compatibility, not resolution.
Fingers crossed for that stand. Though you could obviously build one with no sweat.
-
as far as I know if you see hdmi or wide screen... no light guns

Could I also get that? I have a 27" Sony Trinitron. I wouldn't mind tuning it. Thanks.
-
again Fair warning, BE CAREFUL. Record setting and numbers!
Actually you may want to print this and use it to keep a record of original settings.

Sweet set up!
