Hello again. Aside from the really slick-looking "Fusion"-style covers that TyrannicalFascist started the ball rolling on (I do like those a lot), I've noticed that there aren't many vertical covers available for Shadowfox's SNES cases yet. So I've begun converting/making my own for the games I have in my personal collection.
Some of these were done by using art already available in existing UGC-sized covers, while others I either put together myself or cleaned up scans myself. For all covers, I used gimp to put these images into a template (originally made by Shenske, edited by Wiggy, re-worked by me to fit Shadowfox cases) and exported new covers. *Note: I have re-formatted the "Super Nintendo Entertainment System" block at the top of the spine to more closely reflect the design and position of Shenske's NES CGC spines (added a white border at the top and on the right side). If you do not like this aesthetic change it is a very simple fix (just cover the offending portions with black to match Shenske's original UGC design), but I personally think the cover design looks much better next to the NES covers this way. The template I have linked above also has a version without my added white stripes.
Anyway, here are the covers I have re-done so far. Feel free to use them if you would like. I would also encourage others to upload any vertical covers they have made themselves.

I have edited my first post to include a link to the template file I edited. It is a *.xcf file to be used with gimp. Feel free to use it. That's what it's there for.
I also have some repro covers I have made. Should I upload them to this thread as well or make a new thread specifically for repros?
My computer is on its last few legs (shuts itself off at random times in the middle of what I'm doing, or even when I'm doing nothing) and I must either build a new one soon or possibly replace a bunch of components. I will continue to work on and upload re-sized covers as I can.

I have almost zero graphic design experience and have been doing all my covers in Microsoft Paint. I recently downloaded Gimp and really would like to learn how to use it properly, although I'm having a bit of trouble finding decent guides and tutorials.

I have decided to put the covers for the reproduction games I have in my collection here as well, at least for the time being. My first post has been updated with these repro covers.
Please note that the designs of these covers are meant to reflect the designs of the box art provided by the individual repro makers, though some of these have been altered (I have marked these as custom). You may also notice that some of these repro covers share art with some of wiggy's own cover designs. This is intentional and I have discussed and cleared this with him ahead of time.
I have quite a large collection of repros by this point (most from the same maker), so expect to see at least as many covers of these from me as covers of official releases.
I very much want to be able to use that template but, I'll be completely honest, I have no idea how haha. I have almost zero graphic design experience and have been doing all my covers in Microsoft Paint. I recently downloaded Gimp and really would like to learn how to use it properly, although I'm having a bit of trouble finding decent guides and tutorials.
Then once I'm actually able to use my computer properly again I will try to put together something that you could use to help learn. Otherwise I thought there were a few tutorials somewhere on the forums about cover-making that you may be able to glean some useful info from. Sorry I can't do more at this time (posting from my phone).

Side note, maybe I've never noticed it or maybe that's where Riot got the inspiration, is that tristana from League of Legends? Or did they base that skin off of the game? I never had that game, heck I've never even seen that game in real life to be honest but that caught my eye out of everything.
I'm kind of split right now, I haven't even gotten my SNES collection from the boxes when we moved yet but I don't know if I want this style or the Fusion style. I love the color pop on the fusion covers but the uniformity of these combined with the fact you have almost my entire (tiny) collection already made up lol. Good thing I don't have my games yet because I wouldn't want to try and decide yet

And I know what you mean. Once my SNES Shadowfox cases arrived I very nearly started printing TF's Fusion covers. They DO look great, and I was almost "converted", lol. But I personally prefer the aesthetic of shenske's vertical style, and rather than wait for someone else to do the covers I wanted, I just decided to get started on them myself.

I have recently gotten a fresh new computer (got a really solid pre-built for cheaper than it would have cost me to build the same rig myself). This means I can now work on covers again. However, I have also recently acquired a new addition to my family: a newborn son, born less than a month ago. So I won't have as much time as I'd like, haha.

very nice work on the art man, im just getting into this myself. I ordered 100 cases from http://www.customgamecases.com/online-store/SNES-SFC-c23190012. im wanting to print some vertical covers using the basic paint software on my pc, i know i need legal paper, i was thinking of going with matte finish. but what settings under paint do i need to calibrate to get the correct size cover to fit my box? thanks for the help

I suggest semi-gloss paper if you can find it in right size.
As for the settings (assuming cover is sized properly which most should be):
- Orientation Landscape.
- Centering on (both vertical and horizontal).
- Fit to page off.
- Scaling 100%.
- You'll have to test print for ink saturation setting.

I'm working on a set of "extra vertical" covers that eschew the bottom bar on the front cover, and using mostly art from other regions or platforms to fill the extra space. Would everyone rather I post those here? Or in a separate thread since they won't conform to the same layout as these?

So a little explanation here. While I have no problem with the USA artwork, I actually made myself a repro of the ROMhacked version that puts back all the edits made from the Japanese version. So this now being closer to the Japanese version, I thought it appropriate to use Japanese artwork and logo. If you don't know, the Japanese logo has the castle around it like this:

You'll notice this is wider than is necessary. If your printer is like mine, it doesn't always line up duplex printing perfectly. By adding a bleed, even if things don't line up, you won't be left with white space anywhere. But if you'd like the version that's the correct size, without a bleed (like if you're using two separate pieces of paper) here you go:

@tyler87 I did two things when I started making covers for my games.
I bought an HP printer and joined the Instant Ink program. You'll go through ink like crazy printing full sheet, full color, double sided (if you're using inlays) legal size. So now I just get unlimited printer carts for $5 or less a month. I go through 2 or 3 a month, I've blown through a brand new printer cartridge in 30 minutes when printing in bulk. Nice to know a new one is on the way!
I went to http://www.redrivercatalog.com/ and bought the 45lb. Zeppelin SemiGloss Double-sided Legal size. It's about $60 for 100 sheets, but the weight, texture and sheen is nearly identical to the inserts the game companies use. The results are amazing.

I just looked it up on the site you linked, and it looks like the Zeppelin paper line is being discontinued. All that's left in stock is the letter size.

I've been very busy since my last update, but I've also been able to finish updating all of these covers for CGCs, half of which I used this past weekend to barge through and get done. As a result, I am now finished with my personal retail release covers. I will now go through my remaining reproductions and make covers for those until THOSE are finished.
A couple notes/observations/clarifications:
- As established, credit given where credit is due to the cover authors whose works I have used in the reconstruction of these files. Thank you, ladies and gents, for your hard work in the first place. (As a side note, when using other peoples' work, I generally only use the actual cover art, and sometimes the spine logos. The text and screenshots on the back are always re-typed and re-assembled by me, and I will sometimes correct poor spelling on a game's flavor text if it's especially egregious.)
- I have omitted Samus' overlapped leg from my Super Metroid cover. This is because I have not been able to find art of high enough quality where the entire leg is visible, and rather than it look unfinished in this regard, I've opted to just leave it out for the time being.
- Based on download numbers, it looks like some of you gained access to a few covers I had not intended to post. While there's nothing that can be done about that now, please understand it is because I was not satisfied with their quality, and I would really prefer that they not be circulated, although I suppose I can't stop you.

It's been a long time coming, and I'm nearly done. I have literally one more cover for my personal collection to make (a Star Fox 2 retail-style cover) and then I'll be done, at long last. Then I can print them all and put them into my CGCs. Plus I have one cover request from Togs8896 to fulfill. But all of that will have to wait a bit. The area in California I live in is currently in danger of being affected by wildfires, so I've got to be prepared to evacuate any time. I've already got all the important stuff set aside (legal documents, SSN cards/birth certificates, photo albums, etc.) so now I need to pack up my external HDDs and PCs, and all of my hard-to-replace games, plus take pictures of everything else of value for insurance purposes. That's assuming the fires reach us here; I figure it's about a 33% chance, but better to be safe than sorry. In any case, wish me luck.
A couple notes/observations/clarifications:
- Togs8896, if you're reading this, do me a favor and PM me a link to the screenshots you used for that Pilotwings cover (assuming you have access to those). Thanks in advance.
- The cover for Wozz required a lot of extra work. I know for a fact that a clean version of the original SFC box art exists, but I have not been able to locate it in useable resolution as it only exists in the form of a Famitsu ad that I can't find scans of. So I had to re-draw part of the blond kid's cape, as well as half of his bent leg, from scratch. I'm sure you can tell which parts I re-drew, but I thought it turned out really well and I'm super proud of it, all things considered.
- I also re-drew about half of the logos here. I used to find it daunting and annoying, but I eventually reached a zen-like appreciation for doing it.
- Once more, special thanks to everyone whose work I used in the re-creation of these covers. I literally could not have done this without you.

Oh, and to anyone downloading these new covers, I messed up a layer transparency on FF:MQR, Romancing SaGa 3 and Violinist of Hameln. As a result, they do not have the white stripe at the top of the spine. If you don't like those anyway then it's your lucky day. Otherwise, I'll post a fixed version after work today assuming the fire hasn't eaten my computer.
EDIT: Three aforementioned covers repaired. Computer not eaten. Fires in the area receding a bit; some people allowed to go back to their homes. Fingers crossed.

UPDATE (03/26/18):
Was looking at my bookshelf the other day and realized the Final Fantasy IV - VI repro spines looked kinda crappy. I thickened the white outline around the letters to match the style on Bahamut Lagoon. Looks much better now. I probably should've done that in the first place. Oh well; they're re-uploaded now.

I've been adding some stuff to the template for my own use, mostly to accommodate some of the newer licensed-but-not-by-Nintendo releases. I've got a couple of questions related to that:
1. Should I share my changes once I'm satisfied with them?
2. The screenshot picture frames seem really wide. Is this just an artifact of adjusting the width of Shenske and Wiggy's UGC template? They already seemed wide there. They seem even wider now, although I haven't compared them directly.
If "yes" to both 1 and 2, then there's also:
3. Is there any reason for me not to narrow the picture frames to something more like a 4:3 aspect ratio?

I don't believe I increased the screenshot frame width at all. But the only reason I left the screenshot frames as wide as they were was for uniformity's sake: to keep the design consistent with the standards already put into place. Also makes converting existing covers a little easier. The only size change I think I made was to expand the borders of each surface (front, spine and rear) to match the dimensions of the new CGCs.
That being said, the amount of work I did to the template itself is miniscule in comparison to the amount of work that shenske put into it in the first place, so I fully divert the credit to him. And also, you don't need to ask my permission to make any changes you want to make (especially since I never asked shenske's permission to co-opt his template in the first place, lol). Everyone does things a little differently or has unique preferences, so don't be shy about sharing your own. That's how we got so many different template designs in the first place.

I got the Joe & Mac Ultimate Caveman Collection from Retro-bit months ago, but didn't have access to a scanner or very good raws from others at the time. I made a placeholder from various low-resolution resources online, but it was definitely not good enough to share. I finally got a chance to scan my box and do it for real, and I'm probably more excited about it than I should be ;D The retail box seems kinda low-effort, but when I saw how they'd used a grey stripe version of the Data East logo in place of the SNES one, I loved it anyway. Everything on the front side of the box emulates the look of an original North American NTSC release, and I wanted to bring that over. So rather than putting things where they would normally go in the template, I put them in place of whatever they replaced on Retro-bit's cover.

Some notes on the conversion:
All of the logos were color-matched to their counterparts in the vertical template from this thread. The original blurb text on the back of the box would have left a ton of empty space, and it contains at least a couple of errors and inaccuracies. There's a corrected, updated version of the same blurb on Retro-bit's website, so I used that. I took the bullet points from the product's official Amazon listing. The screenshots on both sides of the box were blurry and very dark. The title screens on the front side are easy enough to reproduce, but the ones on the box have all references to Nintendo removed. So I found the exact matching frames in SNES9x and captured them with and without the text layer turned off, and combined the images. The results are sharper, correctly colored, and show more of the screen. Retro-bit also has the exact screenshots from the back of the box on their website, Amazon, and various other retailers online. These are still dark and blurry, but much less so. I cleaned these up and adjusted the colors to approximately match the actual games. Most of the logos and text scanned clearly enough that I was able to simply clean, recolor and scale them. I don't think you can tell without zooming in. The dark grey-stripe Data East logo was the one major exception, and I painstakingly recreated this from scratch.
One of the sources I found during my previous attempt was a low-res image of the PAL version.

It still uses the North American styling for some reason, so making a PAL cover seemed trivial enough that I should do it. It's basically just some alternate logos, and EU region titles and screenshots. I only have a picture of the front though, so I just kinda winged it for the back and spine.

Those are looking pretty damned great. I have not seen the original boxes myself, but I can tell you put a lot of work into replicating the "Data East" logos that resemble the gray "Famicom" logos on the front, spine and back. They look good. Nice covers.
Really, the only thing I'd recommend is taking the Retro-Bit "seal" and putting the white center bits over a Nintendo seal, so that you keep the larger, more defined "sunburst" spikes from the Nintendo seal but still have the center part which says "Retro-Bit". Just as a matter of personal aesthetic preference. But this all looks pretty great regardless.

Surprisingly, the Retro-bit seal has a different enough aspect ratio from the Nintendo one that it would take a bit more than that. It also might end up with a different number of points around the edge :D I almost would rather trace the edges of each point to find where they should converge to redraw the tips. Maybe someday. For now I've moved on... up next is the ill-fated Retroism release of Return of Double Dragon! ;D

This one got a rough launch, which is a shame because Retroism really improved the SNES styling of the box over their release of Unholy Night--and also because it's a great game. Anyway, my copy actually works (including in my original SNES), so I needed a cover. So, following the same approach as the Joe & Mac collection, here's Return of Double Dragon:

I did tweak two things. The spine on the original box has grey stripes with no logo. That looks fine on the box, but in the template, with a frame around it, it just looked silly. I added a Retroism logo on top of the stripes like they did on the front cover. I also didn't bother using the condensed "Return of Double Dragon" logo on the back, as there was plenty of room for the regular one.

Here's another cover for an aftermarket release! This time it's the crazy bakage beat-em-up Gourmet Warriors (a.k.a. Gourmet Squad, a.k.a. Gourmet Sentai Barayarou)! This is my first cover for a Piko Interactive release. As usual, I've made a version based on the fake branding on the box, as well as one using the standard template. Piko's fake SNES graphic was so dark that it didn't scan well, and I had to recreate it, including the gradient effect. Don't worry, it doesn't print as dark as it looks!

The game is actually a pretty decent brawler. It was made by the people who created the Chou Aniki series, so you can imagine it gets pretty weird.

XCF is the native format of the GIMP image editing software, which you can get for free here:
https://www.gimp.org/
The template has multiple layers for different cover options, and includes some helpful tips inside. I recommend saving your work as another XCF file so you can revise the layers later if you need to. Once you're happy with the results, you can use the "Export" menu to make a PNG or a JPG.
