So I've been wondering what the community would love to see Shadowfox make next. Personally I was thinking that reproduction longbox cases would be amazing. The fact that there is no one else that makes long jewel boxes would guarantee, in my opinion, a large demand for them. Once the word spreads that there is a source for the correct cases for Saturn, Sega CD, and even PS1 longbox games, I think it would bring people to Shadowfox's site and people would be likely to buy other cases as well further supporting the amazing work Shadowfox does. That or virtual boy cases would be awesome, although I'm sure the demand for that would be far less. The covers on here look awesome, but I just can't bring myself to jerry rig some cases together when there is the possibility that MAYBE one day there will be some nice cases.
What do y'all think? In a perfect world, what would you like to see?
-
I would be happy if i could buy the already exisiting ones without getting poor because of the shipping cost to Europe/Germany.
I'd love to order some cases, but i don't because it is too expensive. :-(
But thinking of new cases - i would like to see PS1 cases in the size of European PS1 jewels cases (we did not have standard CD-jewel cases over here), but built like a Amaray case (kinda like Nintendo DS cases).
In this way we could create covers that only consist of one piece instead of separate front and back parts.
OR simply replacement jewels caes, because there is no one out there who sells NEW replacement cases for PS1 (EU).
-
I don't think it makes sense for Shadowfox to enter the realm of disc cases (or at least for a while). I would like to see Game Gear (which is already in the works I believe) and Virtual Boy (which would be a very simple transition from the GB cases).
-
With him doing both the NES and SNES, the N64 seems like the most logical step forward. Disc-based games already have tons of options, so he'd probably have a tougher time making unique cases for those.
-
I second game gear cases. Beyond that, maybe the longbox Saturn/PSX game cases. Though now that I've got my Saturn and Sega CD games in colored dvd cases, I'd be hard pressed to consider replacing them. It looks so good

Replica Sega Saturn Jewel Cases.

Replica Sega Saturn Jewel Cases.
+1 on replica's on longbox cases
-
I bought a Game Gear yesterday with some Games, so I will go wth game gear box as he already made NES, SNES, and N64 (those are the missing boxes I need)
Game Gear for me ;D
-
Game Gear for sure.
-
Game gear for me too, but I think I'll be disappointed as they won't be the same size as original boxes.

No, he plans to make them the same size as master system card cases, which is slimmer and taller than retail boxes.

Hi ALL! ;D
Sorry for turning into a ghost again, I have been up to my ears with life and game cases lately. Hopefully here in the next few weeks all the stuff will get back to normal boring life for me. ;)
Yes, Game Gear is next! And yes, I have been thinking hard about what you all are saying (in the Game Gear thread) about the cases being smaller than the Genesis cases; to match closer to their original boxes as well as stand out as a handheld case and not a console game case.
Virtual Boy is also on my wish list to knockout this year... but we have to see how things go since I actually still owe the factory a few bucks for this last shipment. Once it's paid, I'll be placing the deposit down for the mold cost on the Game Gear first.
As for worldwide shipping costs, yes, it's insane the cost to ship worldwide and my international shipping tables are 2 years old, every time I ship internationally from my site the shipping I charge only pays about 70% of the actual cost on my end. (One of the many things I need to fix)
I have been searching for a better shipping method both in the USA as well as internationally, hopefully I'll find a solution for this.

Would it be possible to have a reseller in another country to receive the cases straight from the factory? This could cut shipping costs significantly. I don't know if it's really feasible, though, it's just an idea.
-
Received my 50pk of the Game Boy cases about a week ago, which now only leaves my PC floppy collection without a casing solution.
If you were to make a case for them, I would want it to be DVD width, only longer to accommodate the larger 5.25" disks. However, I would also want it to be able to hold 3.5" disks, preferably at the same time for games that come on both formats.
Would this be possible, and, if so, would anyone else be interested in this?
Edit: Said height, meant width.

I don't think it makes sense to have 1 size case for both standard floppy formats. I'd be interested in 3.5" size cases though.

I don't think it makes sense to have 1 size case for both standard floppy formats. I'd be interested in 3.5" size cases though.
I strongly disagree, for several reasons:
1: Uniformity. Both types are often used interchangeably for MS-DOS titles, meaning if they had seperately designed cases they would look different on a shelf.
2: Adaptibility: If you stick to 3.5" only cases, you lose the ability to adapt the case to the size of odd floppy disks, like QuickDisks and FDS games.
3: Pragmatism: It is more practical (and cheaper) to make one product to fill both of the main demands of retro PC enthusiasts than to release two, due to the cheaper cost of one mold over two.
Also, the dual format aspect, as I mentioned before. Many games shipped on both 3.5" and 5.25" disks, which would be best fit in the same case. But, to each their own.

How about taller DVD cases thst will hold Long Box (PlayStation, Saturn and Sega Cd) manuals?
Also, I would love the CORRECT color PS2 Cases.
And GameCube Cases.
As for GameGear, although it would be really cool to have them them smaller then Genesis, i think it is more cost effective to use the same genesis mold and just modify them for GameGear Cars. There is probably enough room to make a slot for GameGear and Neo Geo Pocket Color. Or maybe even Virtual Boy with GameGear. Lets try to do this as cost effective as possible.

You can't simply "reuse" a mold. The only case where he could rework a mold would be for Virtual Boy (because the only difference is the cartridge slot). But even that may prove costly if the mold was designed without an inserted core.

He already has the mold for the genesis box so he would just need to redesign the part where the cartridge goes. From speaking with him, I gather its much less costly to do that.

But it wouldn't be the same thickness as the Genesis case. And to change the thickness, you would basically have to build a whole new mold.
-
So this is how it works:
If I keep the same outer dems (Like I have done with the NES,SNES, and N64 cases) My tooling cost is less...However, each case is a brand new mold. Just 66% of the "design" work has been taken care of. Due to my mold's waterlines there is no real simple way for me to design these existing cases with plugs for the cavities. Since the clips effect the waterline.
Taketheword is correct about me just swapping out one side is technically me still building an entire steel mold.
SINCE I have to pony up money anyways for the GameGear mold I might as well spend the extra money and make it the end-all case for the system. I will more than likely build the GameGear cases the same height as the GameGear boxes but the case's spines will the thinner.
I still have "life events" up to my eyeballs right now, and I know I desperately need to bring everyone back in the loop with what I'm up to. :D

Even thought I don't collect anything yet for the game gear, I think the idea of all hand held games being uniform in size sounds cool. But like I said I don't know much about manual size or anything for game gear so i imagine there is probably some reason why that couldn't/wouldn't be done? I've just about finished my virtual boy set and have been giving a lot of thought lately about how to case them up. I'm torn between using DS cases with a cut foam insert or waiting to see if you make some bad ass cases for them. I don't know if it's possible, but a case that fits both game gear and virtual boy games would be awesome. I also think some sort of hybrid case for virtual boy is really the only way to tackle making the cases practical. I've read people talk before about how, with only 22 games in the library, the virtual boy alone wouldn't sell as many cases. Either way I'm sure you've got some cool ideas Shadowfox.
-
At the risk of making the business too much for one man in his house, how about a kick starter to help cover the upfront costs you need? I know there's a chance you get too much and then it becomes something even bigger in your life which is counter productive, but just trying to think of a good way forward to help you and help us...?
-
This is probably a minority opinion, but I'd really like to see some HuCard cases.

Here would be my wishlist
Famicom (the ideal situation in my mind is smaller and more compact like the boxes they came in and to color match the covers with the color of the cartridge itself, preserving the famicom rainbow :D )
Sega GameGear
Famicom Disk System (I know it is really unlikely, but I would love to have something like a DS sized case to hold my famicom floppys, and hey retail covers would be easy as hell, art on the front and white with black text all over the rest of it)
PS1 case of some sort so we could all rally behind one case size rather than having like 3 or 4 separate projects going for different cases from DVD to jewel case replacements I would just like one case that meets all needs which it seems like not a single case that have been tried as replacements does....this task may be actually do able but it's a wish. ;)

I'm assuming you mean PS1 longbox cases? Because regular jewel cases can be replaced very easily.

Recently replaced 10 jewel case, they are very easy to find

Yes I know they are easy to replace, however I have converted almost all mine over to 2 or 3 different custom case set ups (especially for my game that were just loose discs) from DVD cases to the 8 disc poly cases, I just wish there was like one option that we could rally behind as a substitute for the jewel cases.
-
A great substitute for jewel cases is... more jewel cases. ;)

I don't know if is just me (I'm thinking that taketheword feels the same) but I prefer them in it original case. If I'm going to substitute or if I buy one loose (that's impossible that I buy one loose) I prefer to case them in the same case as they where intended to be. Is just my opinion ;)

I agree. I actually love buying PS1 games with broken cases. They usually sell for much less.. and the replacement case costs like 10 cents.
-
There was a time when I wanted to convert all of my PS1 games to DVD. I'm sure glad I didn't. I don't want to think about how much space that would take up today, plus all of the space to store the unused jewel cases that I would refuse to throw away. I'm happy with my original jewel case PS1 collection.
-
Is there any new when the SNES and N64 cases will be available for purchase?
-
i would actually like to see cases for atari 2600 and intellivision etc. stuff like that i would buy a bunch. i got a bunch of carts for those and would be making a big order.

much space
-
Verically, yes. Horizontally, it depends on how many multi-disc jewel cases you have compared to singles. The more multi-disc games you have, the more horizontal space you can save by switching to DVD cases that hold up to 3 or 4 discs. I actually saved horizontal space on a Billy bookshelf by switching (I have a lot of Squaresoft games), then was able to start putting my PS2 games right next to them and have them look totally natural next to each other.
-
it works fine when u custom build your shelving like i do
-
I would actually love to have my PS1 games in DVD cases. I think it would look much better than the original Jewel cases, but at this point I'm not wanting to print out over 350 covers, most of which don't exist yet. So I will stick with the originals.
-
I'd like to see cases for Neo-Geo MVS carts. I'm aware of shock boxes, neo mini boxes, and Windy sleeves, but Shadowfox's cases are so nice looking.
-
well I have a full wishlist.
Sega Saturn (yes I want a repro tallbox)
Sega 32x
TG 16 hucards (i use jewlcases but I would like a more classic looking option0
Sega Master system (carts, the UGC does not hold them well without modification)
Virtual boy (however you can easily mod the gameboy shadowfox cases easily)
also Memory card holder cases would be great for any and all systems.
-
Them damned Sega CD/Saturn/PS1 clamshells!!! It's the only logical choice (yeah yeah yeah, I know they're wicked expensive).
-
I would like to have Atari 2600 to be next after game gear.
The Atari 2600 cases would also be good for the
Atari 7800 and coleco vision.that would be 3 more
Systems done with one case. The size should be like the
UGC that way there's more shelf space and there is covers
Already made. l not sure if it's possible to fit the manual.

The tricky part of making an Atari 2600 case would be making one case that holds every different size of 2600 game (there are many).

I think the best approach to a 2600 case would be to make one that accommodates as many styles as possible and then make inserts like the one wiggy came up with for his Neo Geo Pocket games for all the cartridges that need extra padding or differently placed clips.
-
Personally I'd hope for 32X cases next, though I actually suspect those will be some ways out due to the small library and unpopularity.
-
Again, I'd love a 3.5"/5.25" floppy case. There are plenty of systems that use floppy disks (PC, C64, Amiga, Apple II, etc.) and they're notably less durable than other formats.

I thought Genesis cases were designed to hold 32-X games as well.

Yeah, aren't Genesis and 32X games the same size and don't they fit in Sega brand cases?

Technically, no.

I was talking of Shadowfox cases.
Some originals do fit 32X games, least some EA ones if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, some of the EA cases work for this. But even those have gotten hard to find in my area.

I would love cases for holding 5.25" floppy disks for old computer games. I've searched high and low for a solution and the closest I came across was an audio book case I found at Goodwill, and sadly it's impossible to source such a thing. Universal Game Cases are an alright choice for housing 3.25" floppies but that's not quite enough.
I know that a lot of Sharp X6800 games came in nice snapper cases, however being a computer there was no uniform size, and at any rate no-one is currently manufacturing cases like this. Something along these lines though, that can hold 5.25" floppies, 3.5" floppies, or even a multi-CD jewel case would be a godsent for PC game collectors who perhaps don't want to shell out for a complete big box copy of a game but none the less want something nice to put on the shelf.

Have you thought about using Atari 2600 box protectors?
They are just under 6 inches wide, 7.5 tall, and 1.25 deep.
They are flexible, but a small foam insert in the bottom would stop them being crushed if you were concerned.

Pictures aren't working but the template link is still live to get some idea what it would look like. these cases can be easily sourced online too.
